UDFA

The player no one is talking about is Michigans starting Center, Drake Nugent. Not sure why he went undrafted but he was a top 5 center on a lot of guys I respects boards. Could be our starting Center in 2025. Scouting Report: Nugent was a four-year starter (guard, center, defensive end) at Highlands Ranch High and a three-time state champion in the shot put. A three-star recruit, he signed with his “dream school” Stanford and started in 2021 and 2022. For his final season, he transferred to Michigan and helped win the 2023 national championship. Nugent has functional lateral quickness to match interior rushers with a tight punch but shows shaky body control through engagement. He understands angles as a run blocker and can pull/climb in a timely manner, although he lacks pop upon delivery. Overall, Nugent is efficient, alert, tough and didn’t have many losses on tape, but sustaining against bigger, quicker defenders will be a daunting task. My favorite UDFA. Who's yours?

2024 Draft Yields 3 Starters

Here are the three players most likely to be starters this year from the 49ers 2024 draft class:

Ricky Pearsall has yet to have a quarterback like Brock Purdy and I'm super excited to watch this relationship blossom throughout training camp and the season. Kyle Shanahan will be able to literally line him up anywhere giving his quarterback another man beater.

Renardo Green should be the 49ers starting outside CB opposite Ward with Lenoir moving into the NB position where I believe he fits best in this Cover 3 scheme.

Malik Mustapha brings the violence to separate the ball from the receiver and fill the alley on the crack back tosses. He should be the starting SS allowing Hufanga to not rush his rehabilitation from his ACL.

4th Round Picks

Pick 124 - Malik Mustapha, S, Wake Forest Should fill the lane nicely on those crack tosses. Hit 23 mph on in game tracker. Lynch loves hitters.

Pick 129 - Isaac Guerendo, RB, Louisville Low mileage with size and explosion. 4.33 second 40-yard dash at the combine, which was best among RBs and tied for 3rd among all players. His 41.5 inch vertical jump was also the best at the combine among RBs.

Pick 135 - Jacob Cowing, WR, Arizona Here's another speedy offensive weapon who ran his 40 in 4.38 seconds. He scored 13 touchdowns last year and has experience as a PR. Purdy has to be pleased.

Day 2 Picks

Pick 64 - Renardo Green, CB, Florida St. led the ACC with 14 pass breakups last season and allowed only one catch of more than 20 yards on the whole season. Also no missed games over past 2 seasons. Lenoir and Green should be our starting cb's next year. Held Malik Nabers to 2 catches, 1 PBU & snagged him an INT. 🔥

Pick  86 - Dominick Puni, OG, Kansas moved up from FCS to FBS. Once at Kansas, he made 25 straight starts at tackle and guard and didn't allow a single sack (nearly 1,600 snaps).

Ricky Pearsall

With the 31st pick the 49ers select, Ricky Pearsall, WR, Florida. I presume Herm Edwards and Brandon Aiyuk spoke highly of him. Pearsall had 15 punt returns in college, averaged 10.2 yards per return. Also returned two kickoffs. 6.64 3 Cone. First time Shanahan has drafted a WR with hands <9.5" in Rounds 1-3, with Pearsall's being 9.25". What do you think? Still no secondary in round 1 for this regime. I think this pick signals that Deebo Samuel is on the move....

Merry Draftmas!

Night Before Draftmas

And all through the house was talk of a Brandon Aiyuk trade. Chris Ballard of the Colts, Trent Baalke of the Jaguars and perhaps Mike Tomlin are all rumored to have interest. I think the wisest course of action if Aiyuk is asking over $25 million is to force him to play out the year and then tag-n-trade for a 2nd round pick.

For me, the draft has ended with the way it started because I still think Darius Robinson is their guy at 31. He's their archetype and he's gonna be there in the late 20's for certain. If they want to make sure they get him they can spend a 4th to do just that, however they could just stand pat if they like Michael Hall Jr. almost as much. Round 2 I have them trading up midway for Roger Rosengarten, OT, Washington. He'd present McKivitz with a robust competition.

What Did We Learn?

John Lynch doesn't sound like a GM that plans on trading down. His assessment of depth beyond 178 players was not promising. Has 16 Gold Helmet designees. I think he's going to use his late picks to move up in the 3rd round and possibly a 4th to move up a few spots for a player who might fall. He made a bloodlines comment regarding legacy draftees that sounded promising for those that want Luke McCaffrey. I expect they'll reach for him in Round 4. Other than that, did you guys pick up on anything else?
