2025 NFL Draft Edition: Safety

2025 NFL Draft Safety Rankings:

Starks 🔐 🐶 ———— Winston Jr. ⭐️ Nwankpa ———— Watts ———- Barron 💤 Rod ——— Keon Sabb Lathan Ransom 💤 Billy Bowman Jr. Jonas Sanker Malachi Moore (Has played 10 years of CFB)

Ji'Ayir Brown was millstone around Sorenson's neck this year, along with a linebacker who shall not be named. Signing Hufanga and drafting another safety could be the answer.

I agree with you. I like both Mustapha and Hufanga, but I'd like to see the 9ers add a safety with speed and size, who can also play multiple DB positions.

    3. Lenoir isn't fast but he isn't slow either. He's the multiple DB they just signed.

  3. * Xavier Nwankpa, S, Iowa: Great Value with Ball hawk mentality and exceptional instincts in coverage. He's 6'2" X 215. 40 = 4.39s
Won the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and the safety I'd draft if he's still available at the top of Rd #6

  4. For those on the fence regarding Brock Purdy, he ranks 2nd in both EPA/play and the % of negatively graded games (EPA < 0) through his first 40 games only to Pat Mahomes.

First, let me say I am NOT on the fence regarding BP! He is a very good QB, but the fact is, he does have limitations.
    * Most obvious is the fact he is not what is known as a "MUDDER." His performance suffers when the weather is wet.
    * BP's an outstanding anticipatory thrower against zone coverage posting an 85.7 grade, compared to 68.5 against teams with man coverage and tight windows. While he can make all the throws an NFL QB needs, he doesn't have a strong arm.
    * 3 of Purdy’s 4 lowest passing yard totals have come within his last
4 starts, as the 49ers lost for the 4th time in 5 weeks and dropped to 6-8 on the season. Not that it's all BP's fault, he's had help from Deebo and he has missed Aiyuk and Kittle when they're injured.
while under pressure, which ranked in the top 10 in the league.
    * Career-low passer rating: In Week 7, Purdy had a career-low starting passer rating of 36.7.

    1. Purdy is an elite processor. I'd like to see him focus on his footwork this offseason and step into his throws more.

      Delete
    2. That would make him better with the deep pass that is obviously not one of his stronger points. QBs with stronger arms tend to put the deep pass over the defender. Purdy’s deep passes cause his receiver to slow down to make a catch. If he can't make that throw Shanahan will need to revise his offense to accommodate Purdy’s limitations.

    1. I'm not sure how accurate this stat is (it is Google) but it said McKivitz has given up the 4th most pressures in the league. Purdy has been running for his life for most of the season. As bad as that is his run blocking has been mediocre. On a Shanahan team run blocking is more important than pass blocking. Paying Purdy 60 mill and putting players like Brendel and McKivitz in front of him is counter productive. The only way they are going to win SBs is to put a line equal to the 2019 line in front of him. That starts with replacing Brendel and McKivitz and it has to be done through the draft. My second big concern is with likely losing Greenlaw, Ward and a poor run stopping d line with no money to sign FAs . If we draft to improve our O line we could end up with a pretty piss poor D

    2. 49ers pressures and sacks allowed by the offensive line this season:

      Colton McKivitz: 30, 1 sack, 511 snaps
      Dominick Puni: 28, 3 sacks, 511 snaps
      Aaron Banks: 25, 1 sack, 440 snaps
      Jake Brendel: 21, 0 sacks, 511 snaps
      Trent Williams: 17, 1 sack, 381 snaps
      Jaylon Moore: 8, 0 sacks, 135 snaps
      Spencer Burford: 1, 0 sacks, 39 snaps
      Ben Bartch: 1, 0 sacks, 34 snaps

    ALL THE STATS:
While It's true that McKivitz has only given up one sack (so far), in 2024. He's also given up THIRTY PRESSURES and SIX QB HITS.
While I'm not a big fan of PFF, they give McKivitz an overall grade
of 69.5. A pass blocking grade of 69.4 and a run blocking grade of
    68.2.
NOTE: A PFF grade of 60 is considered average.

Does the graph you posted at the top change anything that I posted
    with respect to BP?
    * As I said, I am NOT on the fence regarding BP! He is a very good QB, but the fact is, he does have limitations.

    I have the following questions:
    1) Should BP have to compete for the starting QB position, or are the 9ers no longer a meritocracy, as JL and KS claim?
    2) If the 9ers do pay BP $60 - $65 Mil P/Y, can the 9er FO still afford to continue surrounding BP with top talented players at their position,
who are also top paid players, or will the salary cap force the 9er FO to cut them? Will it also mean the 9er FO can't afford to pay talented back up players, or at least fewer of them?
    3) Can the 9ers win a SB with BP surrounded by average, to above average players?

    1. I think Brock is in a different situation than most. I think SF is saying they will pay him top of the market money but I thnk it ends up being closer to 50 than 60 -65.
A major reason for this is that the market will dictate his value and I dont think any team would pay him that much given his limitations and injury history.
So its quite possible he get a high 40s contract w/ largely upfront guarenteed money and SF gets outs in year 2.
      1. No, no one out there could really do that.
      2. No, no team really can with that kind of cap allocation... mahomes included.
      3. Possibly, depends on how its allocated and how good the defense is. This year is an outlier becuase he went from having a below average line with amazing weapons and great D. To having a below average Line, below average weapons and a below average D, and no i dont care where the D or the O ranked yardage wise. Teams play differently when they know you cant score and they can.

  13. I know some had concern over the wide 9's viability given the poor run defense connotations associated with it, but I think we saw the difference against the Rams when you have a competent Safety who fills the proper hole and makes the tackle, and a LB that Warner doesn't have to worry about doing his job filling lanes for the tackle. That is the key to the wide 9's ability to function at it's highest efficiency.

    4. OldCoach,

This is my understanding on the way it works.

Before the initial 53 man roster is set, there are two ways you can handle IR designations:

      1) If you do it before adding the player to the 53 man roster, that player is done for the season. He cannot play at anytime during the season. Eg: Elijah Mitchell.
      2) The other option is to add the player to the 53 man roster and then put him on IR. This way, the player can come back to play that season. You can do this for a maximum of 8 players who while being on the roster and while on IR, can still be eligible to return. Eg: Ambry Thomas

My question is, why didn't we designate Ambry as IR pre-53 and not release Womack? This way we get the same result with Ambry, but we still would have had Womack. Instead of letting the Colts get 2 years of Womack's rookie contract.

Take a look at the official "initial" 53 man roster. Ambry is there.

    1. Deebo will be back and might even get extended. He's guaranteed $15,430,530 option bonus by the 10th day of the new league year, which means they's need to trade him before then. Any team that trades for him would need to pay out that option bonus, which prorates over 5-years, and voids after 2025. Said team would on the hook for $12,344,424 in dead money for 2026.

And B) Until BP demonstrates success against the defenses
using man to man coverage, with some consistency, it will remain an issue?

    3. He’s in his 3rd year but didn’t start until late in his first year so he’s actually only played a little over 2 years worth of games.

      A. First can you explain what the DC’s have figured out about Purdy that helps them win? Secondly, DC’s don’t just study QBs looking for weaknesses, they study the whole offense and the scheme. It is a team sport you know.
      B. It’s clear that the issue in man coverage is lack of separation. The statistics point this out. This problem makes it difficult for any QB. No matter who the QB is, there is going to be a lower completion percentage in tight coverages. This isn’t a QB issue. It’s either a scheme issue or a receiver issue. If you don’t agree I’d love to hear your take on why its a QB issue.

  19. Purdy top 5 (#4) in a metric that accounts for negative plays outside his control like drops.

    ReplyDelete
  20. What does the metric say about negative plays caused under his control?
Throwing into tight coverage. Not seeing wide open receivers. Throwing inopportune Ints. And underthrowing deep passes. My comments aren't made with the purpose of the 49ers letting him or having a contractual battle. I'm simply noting areas that Purdy needs to work on these personal areas of his game. He is the key to the 49ers remaining competitive. I want him to get better.

The most important fact is that overall he Is a top QB. I’d say top 5. Many people believe that to improve in overall performance, you should work on your strengths more than your weaknesses.

I think the 49ers have no other choice than to sign Purdy. I also think Purdy will ask for more than any QB before him. I worry that signing him for that much may shut the 9ers SB door for 3-5 years. I hope the front office can pull off some miracles and sign some quality FAs at LB, OL or DL. Lastly I believe that this years draft may be the most important draft for the 49ers in a long time. They are still trying to make up for the 23 draft.

  22. Coach,
Your concerns are aligned with mine for the most part. Next year's draft needs to match or be better than 2024. And FA signings MUST be better next year. This season, imho should receive grace because of the hard hit circumstances. But another 500 or losing season will demand tough questions from the FO down to the players.

  23. JUST A THOUGHT?
So what if the 9ers used the non-exclusive franchise tag on BP for the 2025 season?
    * This would allow BP to negotiate with other NFL teams, but if he signs an offer sheet with another club the 9ers would have 5 days to match the offer. If the offer is not matched, the 9ers receive 2 first Rd draft picks as compensation from the signing team.
    * The non exclusive tag would allow the market to establish BP's
worth! It would also eliminate negotiating what his agent, Kyle Strongin believes he's worth and eliminate BP from using any "sit-in" tactics.
Just to satisfy my curiosity, does anyone on the blog believe another
    NFL team would offer BP a 4 or 5 year contract worth $60 - $65 Mil P/Y? How about $50 - $60 Mil P/Y?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That wouldn’t accomplish anything unless he was asking to be paid well out of the range, say 70M. He’s not going to get Deshawn money but he is a top QB and we all know what the market is. He’s a better QB than Tua who makes 53 so it’s not going to be less than that.

    2. GEEP,
There is always one incredibly stupid owner/GM out there when it comes to signing QBs. Like I have said the 9ers are between a rock and a hard place. 2 firsts for BP sounds good to me would they be in 25 and 26 or 26 and 27? Who would they replace him with. I believe what would happen is a team would offer BP 55 to 60 mill and the 49ers would be forced to beat the offer, pretty much the same thing as what would happen if they just negotiate with him in the first place except they would pay more.

      Delete
    3. The Raiders, Browns, NYG, are among a few teams that might set a high contract bar for the 49ers. I want to see Purdy playing with all his weapons before taking serious measures. That's why I believe Purdy and 49ers come to an agreement before TC in 2025.

      Delete
    4. OldCoach: "There is always one incredibly stupid owner/GM out there when it comes to signing QBs"
      * If, as you say, there is one incredibly stupid owner/GM, then it's also likely that team is in line for top draft picks for 7 Rd's.
      * I doubt another NFL team would be willing sign BP to a contract worth >$50 Mil P/Y! Last year, after playing in the
SB, maybe? But after the year he and the 9ers are having, IMO,
      no!
      * But for the sake of argument, let say another team offered to
sign BP for $60 - $65 Mil P/Y and they draft between the 3rd and 5th picks. Would you let BP go and use the draft for 2 top draft picks, with one a top QB? With the money saved from not signing BP, sign a bridge QB for ~$30 - $40 Mil P/Y, 3 or 4 top FA's and top 9er players who will be FA's in 2025?
      * With a good 2025 draft, 3 or 4 top FA's, and keeping to 9er
FA's would the 9ers be better in 3 years?
That the question only the 9er FO can answer, but what if they get it wrong?

      Delete
    5. GEEP,
Do you have a QB FA or high draft QB pick who could immediately step in for Purdy? Brock has some minor flaws that can be corrected save a strong arm. But his previous two years of championship and SB appearance can't be discounted either. It would be hard pressed if I was the 49ers to not sign him. As I said this morning, a strong draft and FA signings are vital for the 25 season. I'm not completely all-in with a large Purdy contract. But I'll role the dice.

      Delete
    6. GEEP,
I believe there are only 2 QBs worth drafting in the 1st or 2nd round. Those are Sanders and Ward. I believe that they will go top 3. So any pick past the top 3 I would match their offer. I am not a fan of Wards, Sanders is the only QB I would take and I think he will go #1. So for the sake of argument lets say the 9ers get the 1st pick and choose Sanders. I think they would have to start him the first day because the only FA QB worth anything at all is Darnold and I think he will sign for 50 mill at least and for 3 to 5 years and that is not a bridge QB.

    7. The team that drafts Sanders gets the circus that follows him.

    8. AES: "Do you have a QB FA or high draft QB pick who could immediately step in for Purdy?"

Yes! As I've said before, Sam Darnold. The Vikings have JJ McCarthy, and can't afford Darnold, who I believe could be signed for less than BP....Likely in the $35 to $40 Mil P/Y.
If another NFL team is willing to pay BP $60+ Mil P/Y and give up 2 first Rd draft picks, the 9ers would have 3 first Rd draft picks.
      * There are also 31 NFL QB's who will be free agents in 2025. If the Steelers can find someone like Russell Wilson, JL and KS should be capable of finding a FA QB that can be a bridge QB?

  26. You can always tell when someone doesn't understand how complex a sport football is and the layers that need to be individually analyzed by the way they try to dumb down a topic like paying Purdy.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The other component that I believe gets lost in the discussion around Purdy is that the rise of the athletic QB has skewed how people see the career progression of QBs. QBs are now expected to be able to come in early and perform, take their team to great heights. And the thing is, athletic QBs that don't rely as much on their ability to read the field and make quick decisions are better able to do this early in their careers.

QBs that need to rely on more cerebral elements of their game have always taken longer to develop. Again, the fact the Purdy's level of play is as advanced as it has been should be seen as a good sign. He's got more development to go.

    ReplyDelete
  28. My problem with what BP is going to sign for is not about BP but what the NFL is signing their QBs for. Not long ago when a QB signed his salary was slotted by his ability. If that QB was ranked at #10 his salary was slotted at around #10. Now regardless of where a QB might be ranked in the top 10 the latest signee will be paid more than every other QB. QBs signed today are averaging 20% of the total cap with the top 6-8 receiving 25% of the total cap. 10 years ago QBs were averaging 10% of the total cap with the top 6-8 receiving 12%. If this sort of QB salary inflation continues it will result in teams with top 10 QBs being priced out of being competitive for SB championships. I believe that BP is somewhere between the #7 and #10 ranked QB and his salary should be slotted there but it won't he will be paid more than any other QB. This is why many are calling for a QB salary cap separate from the traditional cap.

    2. Coach,
I hear you. But the owners have created the exorbitant contracts. Also, in today's NFL, if QBs were paid according to their ability Watson and Prescott would likely be paid half of their current money.

      Delete
    3. OC, yes, the share QBs make of total salary cap is what scares me too. Makes it hard to maintain a strong squad around a vet QB, and thereby increases the value of having a starting QB on a rookie deal.

But the flip side of that is now every team with a vet QB basically has to dedicate a large chunk of the cap to the QB. Which helps a bit in keeping parity.

Just have to hope BP continues to develop into an excellent QB, and if he doesn't, that there is a reasonable opportunity for the 49ers to part ways without a heap of dead money.

As the old cliche goes, The greatest ability is availability. Another cliche that works here is I would rather be lucky than good. Health has always been important if not more important than skill and the 49ers had some of the worst health I have ever seen. There was a time before the salary cap where teams could over come injuries. Think about it there was a time when the 49ers had 3 QBs on their roster Montana, Young and Bono. In todays league Montana and Young would both be making 60 mill and S. Bono would be starting and earning at least 30 mill. I believe that at least 60% of the 49ers problems this year are health related. The defenses performance versus the Bears and Rams was directly related to the return of Huff and Greenlaw. This team did not play up to its potential this year but if healthy they would have won the division and likely would have won one playoff game before being eliminated

    2. Yes, agree OC, this team is still good when healthy and playing like they mean it.

This season has just been a perfect storm. Super Bowl hangover, contract disputes, gun shots and injuries. Has ended up feeling a lot like 2020 all over again.

IMO, the 9ers have overpaid several players and now they're faced with the consequences. While I understand they over paid to chase a SB, they're now faced with the consequences and need to rectify a problem they created.

    1. Geep,
I agree. The problem is paying BP 60 mill will just thrust them back into cap hell

      Delete
    2. How many have they really overpaid though?

Hargrave is one and he will be one they move on from this offseason. Deebo hasn't performed up to his extension and there's a chance he'll follow Hargrave out the door. Neither has been bad per se, but definitely not delivered up to their contract value.

      Who else though?

      Delete
    3. Scooter
I believe it started with Dee Ford.
I understand he was injured, but they cut Arik Armstead because he refused a pay cut.
Kyle Juszczyk faced a cut until he accepted a pay cut.
It now appears Javon Hargrave is next.
Even if he still one of the best OT's, Is TW's body proving to be human? Getting old doesn't mean you're injured more, but it does take longer to heal. What If he continues to miss games?
Will CMC ever be what once was? For a full 17 games, or will his reps be managed to keep him healthy?
And the biggest question is BP! Has the NFL DC's figured out
how to beat him? Can he adjust to throwing into tight windows
when teams play tight man to man, VS zone? While there are those who postulate he's a top NFL QB and worth the $60 Mil P/Y the market dictates, can he get the 9ers to a SB without
surrounding him with the talented players he now enjoys?

Here is an article that begs a question for anyone that cares to explain it....Why, if you're a genius, did you let him get away?
Sam Darnold’s career season means the Minnesota Vikings face a tough decisionhttps://sports.yahoo.com/sam-darnold-career-season-means-090011435.html
And if you could sign him to a 2025 contract for ~$40 Mil P/Y, why wouldn't you?

      Delete
    4. GEEP,
I would sign Darnold for 40 mill and trade BP. The only problem with that scenario is I don't think Darnold will sign for 40. There will be at least one if not more GMs/HCs who will panic and sign him for 55 mill or better.

      Delete
    5. OldCoach
You could be right, but you'll never know unless you try!
Conversely, Darnold may choose the 9ers over another club willing to pay him more, as he may believe the 9ers represent his best opportunity to win a SB? And the compensation an NFL player receives from the team he play for, is actually much smaller then the endorsement deals he gets

      Delete
    6. OldCoach
Something I might add: For those who claim BP's agent would
never let him sign a contract for less than market value.....
Agent's do have a fiduciary duty to their clients, which means they are legally obligated to act in their clients' best interests.
      * That includes: To advising his client that signing with a dysfunctional team willing to pay him more money, may not be in his best financial interests.
      * That a team like the 9ers may represent his best opportunity to win a SB and sign multi million dollar endorsement deals.

    Burrow - 0/2
    TLaw - 1/1
    Goff - 1/2

      * James Pearce Jr., Edge, Tennessee: Could be the #1 EDGE drafted in 2025. But IMO, he'll need a year in the gym before he's a three down DE that can be relied on to set the edge.
      * Pearce also played against an Ohio St O-Line with more injuries than I can keep track of.
      * The bowl games, Combine and pro day are yet to take place,
so we'll likely see draft boards changing before the draft.
Fortunately, the first 2 rounds in the draft are filled with some excellent EDGE prospects for the 9er FO to chose from.

  39. Biggest reasons for 2024 season from hell:

Red Zone in both Offense and Defense were awesome last year and terrible this year
    Special teams mistakes
20 misses in the first 3 rounds of the draft
Young secondary resulting in growing pains
Injury riddled with an aging core that could use an infusion of youth
Rest factor differential this year -22 days, worst in the league
For context on how big rest can be an advantage or disadvantage:
Of the teams that have an 8 game or more net rest edge: 46-24, .657 winning percentage, those that had an 8 game or less net rest disadvantage: 48-50, sub .500

  40. Aiyuk, Deebo, & CMC combined for 40 TDs last season, and this season suffered a precipitous drop to just 2 TDs this season.

    ReplyDelete
  41. This may be more on Shanahan. But, in the first meeting against the Rams and with all these players on the field, Shanahan schemed passes to Jennings. This for the most has been limited since that 1st game with the Rams. With Aiyuk out Shanahan has not used Pearsall enough to take attention away from other receivers. Hopefully that will change in the next few games.

    ReplyDelete

    1. AES,
Is it Shanahan or is it Pearsall? Pearsall seems to be in the game quite a bit but he just isn't being targeted. It could be that KS isn't using him well or BP isn't seeing him or Pearsall doesn't get open. Like you said hopefully we will have a better idea after the next 3 games. The one game he returned punts he looked very good. In my opinion Cowing goes down too easily and he seems to slip quite a bit. I would like to see Pearsall at PR the rest of the season.

  42. Per, Shanahan
“I think Ricky got a little banged up in Green Bay, battled through that a lot, still was able to play a lot through it and helped us out at punt return."

Cowing has seen little snaps as well. If Pearsall is playing hurt why not give Cowing some playing time? Does Shanahan and Lynch really know what these rookies WRs can bring to the table going forward?
Perhaps Pearsall and Cowing will see more action down the stretch.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Regarding Cowing, my Shanahan sources tell me nothing is given and everything must be earned.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I can agree with that. So does this mean that Cowing is not doing well in practice?

  45. In past years I think that Brock was more conservative and more of a game manager to speak (which to me does not have a negative connotation). I think his development put him on a path to be a bit more risky this year. Because of the injuries to the skill players, I believe that he has increased the risk and has been at times playing "hero" ball in a fair number of games. So in a nutshell he overcorrected and I think a major reason was the injuries. And some of the overcorrections were totally disproportionate like throwing the ball to JJ in the endzone against the Lambs and having it intercepted. The team was only down by 3 points with plenty of time left on the clock and Purdy did not have a good look at that throw. Very poor decision, but unlike KS, Purdy owns up to his mistakes. He has shown me that he will learn from his mistakes and I think he will realize that playing "hero ball" seldom makes sense (but just like that Star Trek episode where Spock ignites the shuttle craft fuel is sometimes justified). Still I'm thinking $48 million per year average with maybe the guaranteed amount suggested by Razor.

    1. Structurally it'll look like Lawrence's contract with the first 3 years cap hit super low. Main difference between Tua's and Purdy's.

    2. Strangely enough, Brock has the same agent too, Kyle Strongin, lol.

      Delete
    3. I hope it looks more like Tua's deal than TLaw's. Sure push some cap hit out, but you don't want to put yourself in a position where you can't get out of the deal without a lot of pain in a couple of years. The Jags can't get out of the Lawrence deal without incurring a huge dead cap hit until 2028.

      Delete
    4. Purdy's final year at his rookie salary and Lawrence doing his with two years left could be a factor.

      Delete
    5. I don't see how that would have impacted the Jags decision to structure it the way they did. That was their own choice. I hope it isn't one the 49ers follow.
