Rehiring Robert Saleh.
Signing Mac Jones as QB2.
Switching from Moody to Eddy Pineiro.
Aside from the draft and the starters designated to return, those three moves above have put the 49ers in a position to make one more move: Trade for an upper tier big DE to stand in for Nick Bosa.
The candidates:
Trey Hendrickson 30 yrs old, this year only @ $16M Conditional 3rd
Jaelan Phillips 26 yrs old, this year only @ $13M 5th rounder
Bradley Chubb 29 yrs old, 2 yrs @ $31M 5th rounder
I have been gone what happen to Bosa?
ReplyDeleteACL right knee. Clean and expected back at camp next year.
DeleteColin Simmons is having a game for Texas. Gonna be a top 10 pick.

ReplyDeleteJean Phillips has a history of injuries that includes a torn Achilles in late 2023 and a torn ACL in late 2024, both of which were season-ending. Other significant injuries include an abdominal muscle strain in September 2023 and a lumbar sprain in the same month. He has a previously history of injuries in college, including a concussion that led to medical retirement before being drafted by the Dolphins.
I don't see JL spending $13 for another IR candidate.
Yea, I wouldn't expect Phillips to be back to his pre-injury form until the post season.
DeleteA DE candidate I'd like to see JL / 9er FO try to trade for:
ReplyDeleteKayvon Thibodeaux, NY giants. The Giants picked up his 5th year option, so he's signed thru 2026 season.
* With the additions of Brian Burns and rookie Abdul Carter at edge rusher, Thibodeaux is considered expendable by the Giants.
* He would replace Bosa and provide insurance if Bosa is slow to recover from ACL next season. Also, a replacement for Bryan Huff if he is gone in 2026.
* 9ers would get Kayvon Thibodeaux. NY giants would get WR Aiyuk.
Assumes Aiyuk recovers and returns to form in the 2nd half of 2025
season and playoffs .
* Aiyuk would provide a veteran WR for Giants young QB Jaxson Dart.
Thibodeaux is interesting. Hasn't lived up to his draft status. That's not to say Kocurek couldn't get more from him in this system.

DeleteYea, I agree...9ers would likely have to work out the contract money! Maybe a contract performance milestone clause for Aiyuk?
I'm with you on Thibodeaux. I like Phillips as well. Both of these guys are young and play with fire.
ReplyDeleteI think they will have to give up more than a 3rd round pick for Hendrickson. If the Bengals keep Hendrickson they will receive a 3rd round comp pick when he signs in the off season. I am hoping the Bengals would accept a 3rd round pick in this years draft as well as a 2nd and maybe a 4th in the 27 draft. I hope the 49ers don't give up any draft capital in this years draft (trading a 3rd this year would be a wash when they get a comp pick back when he leaves in the off season) so they can use all of their picks to rebuild the O line. Does anyone think there would be trade partners for Purdy in the off season? If Jones continues to excel this year he could step in as the starter next year and the 49ers could save on Purdy's salary plus get back some draft capital. Anyone think thats even a possibilty? With the money they save they could trade for Hendrickson (or your D end of choice) then with the money they save they could offer Hendrickson a 2 year extension. Just an idea.
ReplyDeleteThe Rams got Von Miller for a 2nd and 3rd. I think they can get Hendrickson for a conditional 3rd and a 4th.
DeleteI don' see Purdy going on the market Old Coach. The issue for me was if he was sailing the ball at practice due to his toe, what was Mac's status w the foot/knee? Per Hendrickson, yes, I would make that call...... just depends on what the price is. Do they need size on the end, or speed? I think we have the size, not sure speed........ Personally- I wonder about mixing in more disguised blitzes while dropping an Edge back in Zone... can Beal offer anything? Would have liked to see more Dime coverage for added speed against the Rams.
DeleteWorth keeping in mind that if you pick a player up half way through the year, you only pick up the salary share for the remaining games, not the full annual salary.
ReplyDeleteHendrickson is cheaper than I realised in $ terms. If you can get him for a 3rd it would definitely be worth considering.
Hadn't realised Phillips was on his 5th year either, so he's a bit more expensive than I had been thinking.
Yep, prorated salary.
