UDFA

The player no one is talking about is Michigans starting Center, Drake Nugent. Not sure why he went undrafted but he was a top 5 center on a lot of guys I respects boards. Could be our starting Center in 2025. Scouting Report: Nugent was a four-year starter (guard, center, defensive end) at Highlands Ranch High and a three-time state champion in the shot put. A three-star recruit, he signed with his “dream school” Stanford and started in 2021 and 2022. For his final season, he transferred to Michigan and helped win the 2023 national championship. Nugent has functional lateral quickness to match interior rushers with a tight punch but shows shaky body control through engagement. He understands angles as a run blocker and can pull/climb in a timely manner, although he lacks pop upon delivery. Overall, Nugent is efficient, alert, tough and didn’t have many losses on tape, but sustaining against bigger, quicker defenders will be a daunting task. My favorite UDFA. Who's yours?

  1. From what I hear/read the knock on Nugent is weight. He is light. My two favorites are Cody Schrader and Evan Anderson. Hopefully Schrader is a Bobby Turner pick. I can see Anderson making the PS for a couple of years but by 26 about 20 lbs lighter he could become a pure run stopper.

    1. Nice, Schrader should make the team as I don't think he'd clear waivers but I think Anderson for sure is at least on the practice squad with what they paid him.

  3. Yeah, Anderson seems like an interesting player. One reporter said that he could be a DJ Jones type player. I know, that at this point it's an excaturated comment, but I'll be following his progress in TC.

  4. I like the UDFA haul - I could see a few of those guys making the PS and contributing over the years.

  5. According to
    @bcondotta
, the #49ers have kept in touch with former #Seahawks S Jamal Adams, with interest of adding him to the roster

    That's a shocker for mine

    1. I'm assuming but I can't stand that dude. He's probably the most overrated, overhyped loudmouth in the league.

  6. Something I have been contemplating - the rumours that the 49ers were shopping Deebo don't seem to stop, so I'm thinking there must have been some truth to them, but they didn't receive an offer they liked.

Now the draft is over and the team didn't add an OT... but there are still rumours swirling that Deebo may yet be traded.

I wonder if the 49ers would consider a player for player (+ picks) trade? Especially one that nets them a potential starting OT? Doubt it happens, but I wonder if that would tempt the 49ers?

  7. I am beginning to believe that they really expect McKivitz to take a step up this season. After the 24 season if he doesn't make a measurable improvement they will draft/trade for a RT and use McKivitz as their swing OT in the last year of his contract.

  8. I don't see them trading Deebo or Aiyuk at this point. I think the players in jeapordy of making the roster could get moved. Players like Mitchell, Gray, Latu, Thomas, Mason, Zakelj....

  9. I don't see them trading Latu. KS likes to keep 4 TEs on the 53. As of today I think they only have 4 under contract. A question for you, who do you think will be the backup FB now that Dwelley is gone?

    1. Not sure there is one. No time to train somebody either.

    2. I think it will be Willis.

But I also think they'll start using s FB a little less.

    3. Yea, I was thinking they may phase out the traditional FB role for maybe adding another WR like Pearsall instead.

    4. Schrader has the size, blocking ability and is a really good receiver. He could fill that roll. He also would be a more effective runner than Juice.

    5. I always get nervous about projecting RBs to be FBs - run blocking on the move is a very different skill set that most RBs don't have much (if any) experience in. It's why I think it is easier for TEs to make the transition, especially TEs that have experience being an H-Back/ move TE.

    6. Coach,
Schrader is listed at 5'9" and 214 lbs. Juice makes his bones as being a great lead blocker with the ability to catch, but that's an exception to the rule. I was hoping for Dallin Holker because he, like Juice may have been able to successfully convert from TE to RB. Maybe they address the Juice position next year.

  10. I liked the UDFA's this year, Schader, Anderson and Pline all look like guys that might stick.
Interestingly enough... Schrader and Isaac are both rb's that are 1 cut runners that are solid receivers and descent in pass pro.
I hope Puni can snatch a starting spot this year. I think he provides a potential upgrade at every position not labeled LT, and I don't rule him out as RT, even if I don't think RT is not the worst position on the line.

  11. The more I hear/read about QB Tanner Mordecai the more I think he might beat out Brandon Allen for #3 QB or at least make the PS. Strong arm and runs a 4.4 forty

    1. I also have read some upbeat stories on the guy. I hope he beats out Allen.

    2. Appears Kyle's evolving his game. You've said you think he's going to scheme runs for Purdy. Added Cowing. Signed a 4.4 UDFA qb. Look out world.

  12. I think Puni has a chance to win the RG spot this year, and long term be the starting LG or C.

  13. Gonna be tough beating out Feliciano. Both him and Deebo probably will miss time to injuries so he might get his opportunity this year.

    1. Going to be tough for any of the rookies to win a starting job, but I also think there are a few that will be in the mix for a starting spot in TC. One of the benefits of drafting guys that are already pretty well developed.

Yeah, I believe that the 49ers learned this painful lesson in drafting Lance.

    1. Could well be.

I still wonder whether Lance will eventually turn out to be pretty good. Part of why he didn't work out with the 49ers was his level of readiness, but a larger part was just bad luck for Lance - multiple injuries and the 49ers struck gold on Mr Irrelevant.

    2. Lance was QB3 for Dallas last year. If he is still the QB3 in 24, it may not bode well for him going forward (?).

  15. Cody Schrader kind of reminds me of Frank Gore Sr. Gore ran the 40 in 4.58 while Schrader ran it in 4.61 but more important for a RB Schrader ran the 10 yard split in a above Avg. 1.55. Like Gore he is short and stocky, has great vision and is a good receiver. Like Gore Schrader has a great work ethic and regardless of Gore's wonderlic score they are both extremely smart football players.

    1. Coach, I've thought that as well. Nice to see you mention it.
