With the 31st pick the 49ers select, Ricky Pearsall, WR, Florida. I presume Herm Edwards and Brandon Aiyuk spoke highly of him. Pearsall had 15 punt returns in college, averaged 10.2 yards per return. Also returned two kickoffs. 6.64 3 Cone. First time Shanahan has drafted a WR with hands <9.5" in Rounds 1-3, with Pearsall's being 9.25". What do you think? Still no secondary in round 1 for this regime. I think this pick signals that Deebo Samuel is on the move....

Certainly not what I was expecting, but you can see why Shanahan likes him.
ReplyDeleteMy main question is where does he play? He's not an X. He could play flanker, but is more a vertical/ intermediate slot. Which matches nicely with where the 49ers like to attack.
But 49ers haven't historically played a lot of 3 WR sets either.
So yeah, Deebo could be on the chopping block.
42" vertical is the 2nd best of any WR ever recorded if I'm not mistaken.
DeleteRazor,
ReplyDeleteWhat would a team be willing to give up for Deebo?
I'd say a 3rd would be the most you could get for Deebo.
ReplyDeleteI like Pearsall better than McConkey.

ReplyDeletePurdy is going to love Pearsall. Really great pairing.
ReplyDeleteYeah, agree with this. Intermediate middle of the field specialist with the quicks, route running, speed, hands and body control to also be dangerous on shot plays.
DeleteHe's basically what Shanahan wanted Pettis to be.
I did NOT expect the 9ers to draft Ricky Pearsall, WR, Florida at #31.
ReplyDeleteIf the 9ers were drafting a WR at #31, I was thought the 9ers would
draft Ladd McConkey, WR Georgia, or a CB.
NOTE: KC drafted Xavier Worthy, WR Texas to replace Hill. If the 9ers play KC in the SB again, they'll need a CB that can match up with Worthy. A CB like a Nate Wiggins, Pearsoll is listed as a Rd 2 slot receiver with the ability to run great routes, crate separation, make circus catches and he's Elusive after the catch (YAC). He's also much cheaper than Deebo, which helps the 9ers afford BP's salary next year.
"IF" the 9ers should move Deebo, could they draft Malachi Corley, WR from W. Kentucky to replace him?
If they take another WR my money is on Johnny Wilson.

DeleteSome positive reasons to take Wilson. Size, catch radius, Breaks perimeter tackles for YAC and down field blocking...but too many negative for me. Slow feet limit ability to get off of press and in and out of breaks. Below-average body control and space creation on 50/50 balls. Lacks consistent focus, dexterity and hand strength as a pass catcher.

Brandon Aikuk texted John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan after the Ricky Pearsall selection: "Fire pick. Can't lie."
Over past two seasons, he has 14 catches for 338 receiving yards on deep crossing routes, most of any player in FBS in both. His 439 total yards on crossing routes since '22 are second most in FBS.
ReplyDeleteOne thing is for sure, they drafted Pearsall with a plan on how to use him. Feels like a guy they'll look to use from multiple alignments.
ReplyDeleteI like that he's already quite well developed as a WR, so should be able to contribute early.
As much as I love the Pearsall pick, if the 49ers don't trade either Aiyuk or Deebo I don't understand them making this pick in the 1st round. There are many areas of need that they could have addressed that would have helped this year. The only scenario I can see is that they really didn't like anyone else at the time and no one would trade down with them.
ReplyDeleteYou sure about that? How do you know Pearsall wouldn't have been drafted by Buffalo?
DeleteIn Ricky Pearsall’s two years at Florida, 62% of his targets came when lined up in the slot.
ReplyDeleteIt sure was a surprise pick but probably a very smart one. You can’t pay everyone and now they have 2 highly paid receivers (assuming they read a deal with Aiyuk). That might work this year but with Purdy’s contract on the horizon, they have to plan for loosing some highly paid player.
ReplyDeleteSmart way to protect Purdy by giving him a wr that can get open quicker than a hiccup.
DeleteI can get on board with this pick. From what I have read he is a great route runner who likes to block. Could be a day one starter to boot. As far as Deebo and Aiyuk go, I hope they retain them. One thing he can do that both Deebo and Aiyuk can't do is beat man coverage.
ReplyDeleteHe can do that in college but it’s yet to be determined if he can do that in the NFL.
DeleteReport: Patriots have discussed Deebo Samuel trade with 49ers.
ReplyDeletehttps://sports.yahoo.com/report-patriots-discussed-deebo-samuel-164545457.html
* NE has 2024 2nd Rd pick # 34 and 3Rd pick # 68. I'd expect the
9ers to ask for NE 2024 pick # 34 and their 2025 2nd, or 3rd Rd pick
for Deebo.
49ers can address glaring needs with these Day 2 draft fits
Deletehttps://sports.yahoo.com/49ers-address-glaring-needs-day-154211128.html
* First, I'd disagree with 9ers having any "GLARING NEEDS". Yes, the 9ers do have needs for back up players, but players they draft will likely not be a starers!
* "IF" the 9ers trade Deebo to NE, we should know when NE is
on the clock with pick #34. If the trade isn't announced then, I
don't see it happening. At least not in this years draft?
I am all in on the Pearsall pick if they trade Deebo. I see them getting a 2nd and a 4th. I don't think they will use all four 4th round picks. I see them using two of their 4th round picks for players and the other two to move up in the 2nd and 3rd round. I have been pushing for a Deebo trade for a while now. I hope it means that they will use CMC to replace Deebo around 30% of the time. Using him to replace Deebo's bubble screens and jet sweeps. That would also mean 30% more time for Mitchell and Mason. If they can't make a trade for Deebo I think the Pearsall pick is a terrible pick. I have heard that trading Deebo will save around 7 mill on the cap this year, does anyone know how much it would save in 25?
ReplyDeleteCenter, Jackson-Powers-Johnson is still on the board. He could move into the starting role sooner than later. Jake Brendal just signed a new 4yr contract, but someone like JPJ could be a nice future investment. My day 2-3 crush is LB Trevin Wallace.
ReplyDeleteThe more I think about this pick, the more I wonder if the 49ers may be looking to shift a little away from their heavy use of 21 personnel, and we'll start seeing more 11 personnel.
ReplyDeleteWe've already see that with Purdy at QB Shanahan is far more willing to lean on the passing game. We could see the team shift even further towards that.
Scooter,
ReplyDeleteThat makes sense but wouldn't that just mean more time for Jennings? I just don't see drafting a WR in the 1st round to get him in the game 20% of the time.
More Jennings on run downs perhaps. I think if you plan on accentuating the pass you want a guy in the slot that can uncover and win often.
DeleteOf course they might still just trade a WR, but if they keep them all I can see them using 3 WR sets more often.
It certainly sounds like Pearsall wouldn't have lasted past the Texans pick at 42, based on CJ Stroud's reaction to the pick.
