Pick 124 - Malik Mustapha, S, Wake Forest Should fill the lane nicely on those crack tosses. Hit 23 mph on in game tracker. Lynch loves hitters.
Pick 129 - Isaac Guerendo, RB, Louisville Low mileage with size and explosion. 4.33 second 40-yard dash at the combine, which was best among RBs and tied for 3rd among all players. His 41.5 inch vertical jump was also the best at the combine among RBs.
Pick 135 - Jacob Cowing, WR, Arizona Here's another speedy offensive weapon who ran his 40 in 4.38 seconds. He scored 13 touchdowns last year and has experience as a PR. Purdy has to be pleased.
I like Geurendo. Mustapha and Cowings like Puni, could be hidden gems. Considering their draft position, the 49ers have done very well. This could turn out to be one of the best NFL drafts in recent memory because of very talented players covering so many rounds.
ReplyDeleteAES
DeleteWith RG Feliciano retiring next year and LG Banks a UFA, in your opinion, will the 9ers use Puni to replace one of them?
I expect Puni to be our starting LG next year.
DeleteRazor
Deleteyes, I agree. He should be an upgrade...And cost effective.
GEEP,
DeleteI believe that the 49ers could make a move at the NFL Trade deadline to find a OT or perhaps grab a OL veteran who gets cut during preseason. Lynch and Shanahan also have a nice track record in signing UDFA. I expect them to draft one more OL player as well.
I'm surprised, No DT or TE but a 2nd WR. Just finished watching L Kruegers response to Mustapha and Guerendo. He loves both picks. He thinks the 9ers could turn Guerendo into a FB, that could really change the position around the league.
ReplyDeleteNo TE, no LB or DT tells us what they think of who they got on their roster.
DeleteI think this draft has literally been BPA on their board with little forcing for need.
DeleteOC, I live listening to Krueger, but I don't know about Guerendo to FB. He did nothing in college to suggest he could do it.
DeleteHe just looks like that home run hitter at RB we know Shanahan loves.
With the Guerendo pick I now have hit on two of my mock picks
ReplyDeleteGood job, Coach!
Delete* Guerendo gives the 9ers the speed to run the outside zone they had with RB Raheem Mostert and he helps open up the middle of the field for the 9er WR's.
Delete* I'd also like to see KS use CMC less, by using RB Guerendo.
and WR Ricky Pearsall in an 11 formation.
Cowing is a poor mans Worthy.
ReplyDeleteRazor,
DeleteWith the inception of the new KO return alignment, Cowing could turn out to be "that guy" because of his great speed.
I don't want o jump the gun but this draft class on paper looks like it could be a good one.
ReplyDeleteIf this is the result of Peters' departure I'm all for it!
DeleteHeh Peters looks to have done alright himself.
DeleteSolid but Newton's foot is a concern and Luke McCaffrey in the 3rd Round is a pretty big reach for mine.
DeleteD J James is still on the board if not mistaken. Kinda surprised.
ReplyDeleteI really like that the 49ers have attacked the strength of the draft this year. WR, IOL and DB. It's not something they often do, and imo is something you should aim to always do, as that's where BPA usually lies.
ReplyDeleteWith the signing of Taylor and drafting of Guerendo, might this be the end of Mason as a Niner?
ReplyDeleteHe's going to have a heck of a fight on his hands to stay.
DeleteBetween Mason, and Gray I hope they're able to showcase one of them in preseason to get a future draft pick.
DeleteWhat then of Mitchell? One of their new emphases appears to be durability.
DeleteI don't think Shanny can quit Mitchell. But yeah, if he can't get through camp without another injury I could see the team moving on.
DeleteI think they love Mitchell. One thing I did notice about Guerendo is his ability to recognize blitzes and pick them up in pass pro. Might be the best RB at it, and that's been Mason's achilles heal along with receiving skill.
ReplyDeleteGarrett Greenfield still on the board, OT, S Dakota St
ReplyDeleteTyler Davis still on the board, DT out of Clemson.
ReplyDeleteDamn Rams got him.
DeleteI don't think Masons going any where. KS likes to keep 5 RBs on the 53. I wonder who the backup FB will be now that Dwelley is gone. With Mitchell's health issues I don't see the 49ers cutting or trading any of their top 5 backs including Guerendo. As much as I like Guerendo lets not crown him yet, he didn't sit for 4 years at Wisc. because he was great. He has had 1 good season out of 5. I hope he is as good as we think he might be.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe Christian Mahogany is still on the board out of BC.
ReplyDeleteBeau Limmer, C , Arkansas still on the board too.
ReplyDeleteBrenden Rice too. He got a lot of love among 49ers fans in mocks, but have to day it doesn't surprise me to see him fall.
DeleteOh man... Puni and Kingston. Josh Norris will be ecstatic! Both guys have ELITE quickness (sub 4.47s short shuttle) plus strength (30+ reps).
ReplyDeleteNice factor you point out, Scooter. Having that type of quickness in small spaces is important. Good looking out.
DeleteBeaux Limmer (C) is a guy that I wanted, but the 49ers went with Kingston (G). Perhaps Shanahan is viewing Puni as a Center (?).
ReplyDeleteI think that's a real possibility. Wouldn't be surprised if he is the #1 IOL backup this year, and slides into either LG or C next year.
DeleteA lot of special RAS athletes in this years draft by the 49ers.
ReplyDeleteThe Rams have really built their DL for the future.
ReplyDeleteThey've certainly tried to. But of the guys they've added the only one I liked was Verse. Hopefully my thoughts that Fiske reminds me of Solly Thomas proves accurate! 🤣
DeletePer Josh Norris.
ReplyDelete"Since 2010, just 28 Offensive Linemen recorded a 4.47 short shuttle or better at the NFL Combine.
24 were drafted.
Those 24 went on to start 84% of their NFL games. It's a cheat code."
Yup. Limmer was there for the taking, but they targeted Kingston who evidently was the guy they wanted.
DeleteWith additions of Puni and Kingston, I am thinking it might be time to shift Burford back to OT.
ReplyDeleteSomething I have noticed with all the picks this year, aside from being seniors, is they all came across as pretty smart and well spoken in their intro calls.
ReplyDeleteNice draft overall imo.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. Next up, TC.

UDFA,
Michigan center Drake Nugent signing with the #49ers, per source.
UDFAs Cody Schrader RB Missouri Tanner Mordecai QB Wisc. Did F. Gore get drafted? I guess we won't be seeing Jerry Rice at 49ers games. Even if Rice's kid only makes the PS I think it was a smart move by Harbaugh to draft him. By drafting him he is inviting Jerry to become part of the Charger family.
ReplyDeleteTerrell Owens kid just signed with the 9ers
DeleteFrank Gore Jr. signed with Buff.
ReplyDeleteMore UDFA signings Evan Anderson DT/NT Fla A Briason Mays OL S Miss Mason Pline TE Furman
DeleteThey seem to have addressed a couple of priorities in this draft. Depth at the interior O line for this season (and a potential starter down the road), and preparing for the post-Deebo era.
ReplyDeleteI think they will keep the best receiver group irrespective of the cost until it's time to pay Purdy unless Pearsall blows away everybody in his rookie year.
I wonder whether the choice these two receivers means that Kyle finally acknowledges that his schemes won't necessarily get receivers open against the best defensive minds like Spags in the play-offs. Needs receivers who can beat press coverage with more consistency than Deebo and Jennings do.
Mood,
ReplyDeleteActually I think Jennings is good versus man coverage, its Deebo who struggles mightly. They have an out in Deebo's contract in 25 I believe that this year will be Deebos last with the 9ers. The two WRs they drafted this week are both excellent route runners and should be outstanding against man D. The biggest difference with the O this year will be BPs running. If teams are going to run man D primarily I see BP punishing them by taking off 6 to 10 times a game. If he is as effective as I think he will be it will force teams back into zone D
OC, not so sure I agree regarding Jennings vs M2M - I don't really see him having much success in those situations.
DeleteJennings is a guy I feel gets a little overrated by 49er fans because of his excellent blocking skills and some catches in key moments. But imo Kendrick Bourne was a much better 3rd WR - which is also pretty clear when you compare their receiving stats. Jennings is a guy that should be a 4th WR imo.
Mood,
DeleteIf Purdy completes the 3rd and goal pass in overtime Jennings is the SB MVP. 3rd or 4th WR I don't care as long as he is on the field every 3rd down in the 4th quarter.
I think Jennings is a decent #3 but the problem is the combination of Jennings and Deebo not getting open on third downs. I've noticed Aiyuk's improvement in beating press man this past season.
DeleteSeems to me that with variations on Kyle's offense being run now all over the league, good defenses are not falling that much for pre-snap shifts and motions as much as they did a few seasons ago. It's getting harder to scheme open receivers when you have smart DCs like Amarumo and Spags with smart DBs to implement their counters.
The YAC bros are great in the open with the ball in their hands but it's getting harder to do that against the top defenses. Hence, the search in the mid rounds for receivers with short area quickness and get open, which, I think, started last draft with Gray. We'll see what tweaks Kyle introduces this season to the pass game.
In Kendrick Bourne's last season with the 49ers, he had 6 dropped passes. Jauan Jennings had zero drops last year. Jennings is one of the most reliable WRs on the team.
DeleteAvailability and reliability are big pluses in the NFL.
Jennings had 19 catches in 13 games last season. In Bourne's last season with the 49ers he had 49.
DeleteI like Jennings, good depth player that works his butt off and is an elite blocker, but he's not what he gets talked up to be as a WR by many fans.
Bourne's numbers likely would have decreased if Aiyuk had been on the team. I doubt that any 3rd WR would garner big numbers with Deebo and Aiyuk on the field. Jennings is good at what he does and with Deebo, Aiyuk and Kittle on the team, it's a good fit, imho.
DeleteJennings is a great fit. Perfect for this team.
DeleteWith regards to Bourne vs Jennings, way I see it is if Deebo or Aiyuk get injured, I'd rather have Bourne coming in as the #2 WR. That is what I meant earlier about Jennings being more of a 4th WR for mine. He's great to have in 3 WR sets, but I don't think he is a good enough receiver to be your #2 WR for any length of time if there is an injury. To me a #3 WR is a guy that ideally can step up as the #2 if needed. And yes, I get the whole having Kittle and CMC means they would still be the #4 option, but you know what I mean. Counter argument to this of course will be that when Deebo missed games last season, Jennings had a 9 target, 5 catch game as the #2 (though he also had a duck egg the next week). So maybe I am being a little disrespectful.
Even so, this for mine is where Pearsall comes in. So long as he doesn't suffer the rookie yips/ learning curve, he'll be the #3 WR (i.e., the guy that rotates with Aiyuk and Deebo in 2 WR sets the most, at least by season end, and gets the most snaps as the #2 if one of Aiyuk or Deebo miss time).
But Jennings will still get his share of snaps and will no doubt get a lot of time in 3 WR sets given his excellence blocking and reliability on 3rd downs.
From what I have read the Niners draft was very good. I really liked the Pearsall pick. I am a little concerned with the Cowing pick only for the fact of his weight 168 lbs. Yikes.
ReplyDeleteUC,
ReplyDeleteWith the new kick-off rule, Cowing's speed could be a big plus. The new KO alignment really seems to favor the return special team.
I forgot about the new rule, valid point. Longevity to be determine later.
