2025 NFL Draft WR Edition

With JJ likely departing next year for a lucrative contract, Robinson's likely game(s) suspension and Aiyuk coming off the injury, the Niners may want to add another WR to the mix.

104 comments:

  1. I think they'll add a WR at some point in the draft. To start the year they currently only really have JJ, Pearsall and Cowing. Robinson will be available after a few weeks. And who knows if and when Aiyuk will be available.

  2. Just did a mock draft over at PFN. Involved a lot of moving up and back. Ended up with.

    20. Walter Nolen
    43. Josh Conerly Jr
    47. Jaylin Noel
    65. Princely Umanmielen
    75. Harold Fannin Jr
    100. CJ West
    109. Smael Mondon Jr
    132. Charles Grant
    142. RJ Harvey
    147. Elijah Roberts
    160. Zah Frazier
    182. Jeffrey Bassa

No safety, but overall I think that would be a nice haul.

  3. Looks good, Scooter.
My only concern is that Nolen (who the 49ers really like) may not be there at 20. I'd be a happy man if Nolen makes it to 20, but I would not gamble on that.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Definitely a concern. But my feelings are that Nolen is enough of a risk that I'm ok missing out on him if it means I can add 2-3 other players in the top 100 picks.

Taking the risk netted me Noel and Princely U in this scenario, and if I had missed out on Nolen I had Ezeiruaku available at 20 as well, who I would be fine taking there, and at 65 I would have still been able to take TJ Sanders.

Stopping the run is essential in any dominate defense.

    2. I can only imagine how a Dline of Bossa, E. Anderson, Nolen, and Matos might look. Of course the 49ers already have their vision of the 2025 Defensive Front, but except for Bossa, at present three positions on the DL are up in the air. Even with the possibility of drafting Nolen, there is still a need to shore-up the DL.

I'd be surprised if the 9ers drafted Banks at #11. But if they do draft him at #11, I'd interpret that to mean they may let McKivitz walk next year and replace him with Banks? IMO, the 9ers would start him at OG next to TW and see if he fits at right tackle before deciding on McKivitz?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I wouldn't be surprised to see them draft an OT at 11, though I had been thinking DT or Edge more likely.

I get razor's point about the investment in OL, but they have shown a willingness to invest at OT and a desire to have a top LT. Hard to find those guys drafting late.

While Williams may say he wants to play to 40, you don't know how much longer he'll go for. So getting a top rated OT when you have a high pick does make sense to me, if they choose to go that direction.

As for where to play him, yeah, I suspect he'd start at LG, though they may prefer to have him at RT and move McKivitz to RG and Puni to LG.

      Delete
    2. Continuity is too important to move McKivitz in my opinion, and if he has another good year then yes, he'll likely leave for 20M to play for another team. Spencer Burford could very well be in the mix for that swing OT position.

      Delete
  39. I'd be fine with K. Banks as 11 and Charles Grant with one of their 3rd picks. Banks would compete for a D1 starter and Grant could lock up a starting job in 2026 while receiving some snaps this season. These are two players that could eventually become foundational on the OL for years

  40. Greg Cosell and I are on the same page regarding Walter Nolen:

    Blue 18.2

  42. I think with Williams/Stewart/Nolen you ask Kris Kocurek who he wants and trust the process. I'm still highly dubious of them taking an OT or iOL before Round 3 at the earliest.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'm getting the feeling at Edge the 49ers are seeking a bigger guy that provides strong run D plus some pass rush upside. If they go edge round 1, look for Williams or Stewart to be the pick. Round 2, Landon Jackson. Other options later - Femi or Elijah Roberts.

  43. Plays after the first read. Beyond LOS...

    Milroe: 93.2 PFF pass (35/51) + 8.3 YPC scrambling
    Ward: 91.5 PFF pass (63/83) + 9.9 YPC
    Sanders: 87.0 PFF pass (52/84) + 7.7 YPC
    Dart: 76.4 PFF pass (26/44) + 8.6 YPC
    Shough: 71.1 PFF pass (43/71) + 5.0 YPC

This gave me an idea that perhaps a team in the 20's uses the depressed trade market in this draft to their advantage and moves up in similar fashion to the way the Chiefs did for Patrick Mahomes for Jalen Milroe. He reads the field and that's not the perception most in the media are pushing.

If the 9ers are seeking a bigger guy that provides strong run D at EDGE, then you should include both Nic Scourton, Texas A&M and J.T. Tuimoloau, Ohio State in Rd #2.

    1. Scourton, yes. Though I think he'll go late 1st so I think he's only an option if they trade back from 11 or up from 43.

    * Williams is 260 with a 4.77s at the Combine and 5 sacks.
    * Stewart is 267 with a 459s 40 and a disappointing 1.5 sacks. He
did have 39 pressures and says he needs NFL coaching to reach his true potential.
    * JT Tuimoloau is 265, a 4.62s 40 at the Combine and 12.5 sacks.
I'd agree he's better against the run than pressuring the QB, but with
12.5 sacks he has demonstrated the ability to. I'd also say, that like
Stewart, with NFL coaching he'll improve.
    * Landon Jackson is 6'6" x 264. Watching his tape, he looks awkward, poor body control and he plays too high (doesn't bend his knees). But despite that, he run a 4.68s 40 at the combine? Is he a project, that with good NFL coaching could become a starter next year?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. JT didn't run at the combine, but more importantly isn't explosive on film. Highly doubt he's a guy that is high on the 49ers wish list.

Jackson imo is the most technically savvy of that group. He needs the least coaching up. Yes, he can look a little awkward at times, but he definitely looks explosive which his testing bore out.

      Delete
  47. The interest in Nolen seems to have tapered off since the Combine. Maybe the 49ers could wait for a team to draft Nolen in the vicinity of 15 -22 (as some mocks now have him). Perhaps that team would be willing to trade Nolen and a 3rd rd pick to the 49ers for their #11?

  48. Goes to show paying top dollar for an OL does not guarantee a SB win. However 7 teams that were in the playoffs were in the top ten for money being paid to the OL. Then there is the Ravens...

    ReplyDelete
  49. UC,
Agree on your assessment of the Ravens. Which also gives rise to the fact that all areas of the team must have enough talent to support weaker areas. That is why the Ravens remained competitive.

The 2024 49ers had obvious holes on Defense, Offense, and Special Teams. Sure, major injuries played a big part. But 2nd depth players were mediocre and except for a couple of FAs the played well, the 24 season highlighted the need for a big reset. The draft can't come soon enough for the 49ers.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Some of those least expensive lines are a product of timing. I assume this is all based on cap hit in 2025, so guys that just signed big deals but have cap hits mostly in future years are considered cheap. And high draft picks on rookie deals are also cheap.

He has some real pop in his hands and he has more suddenness than his timed speed indicates.
I am torn on how good of a compliment he would be with Bosa though... as I wonder if Bosa wouldnt be better complimented with a true speed rusher that can get the qb after he is flushed or force him to step up into the pocket.
That said, I think I would take a swing at it because he is solid against the run and collapses the pocket.

But the turf-toe injury is a big concern imho. I suffered the same injury as a high school athlete and can attest to the fact that it is the type of injury that can disrupt a players ability. Our own 49ers HOF'r, Patrick Willis had this injury and it affected his play. Only those who have experienced turf-toe know of the pain that comes with it. Johnson, could turn out to be a perennial All-Pro player or one that spends a lot of time on the injury list.
