I think they'll add a WR at some point in the draft. To start the year they currently only really have JJ, Pearsall and Cowing. Robinson will be available after a few weeks. And who knows if and when Aiyuk will be available.
ReplyDeleteJust did a mock draft over at PFN. Involved a lot of moving up and back. Ended up with.
ReplyDelete20. Walter Nolen
43. Josh Conerly Jr
47. Jaylin Noel
65. Princely Umanmielen
75. Harold Fannin Jr
100. CJ West
109. Smael Mondon Jr
132. Charles Grant
142. RJ Harvey
147. Elijah Roberts
160. Zah Frazier
182. Jeffrey Bassa
No safety, but overall I think that would be a nice haul.
Looks good, Scooter.
ReplyDeleteMy only concern is that Nolen (who the 49ers really like) may not be there at 20. I'd be a happy man if Nolen makes it to 20, but I would not gamble on that.
Definitely a concern. But my feelings are that Nolen is enough of a risk that I'm ok missing out on him if it means I can add 2-3 other players in the top 100 picks.
DeleteTaking the risk netted me Noel and Princely U in this scenario, and if I had missed out on Nolen I had Ezeiruaku available at 20 as well, who I would be fine taking there, and at 65 I would have still been able to take TJ Sanders.
Harmon was tied for 36th in PFF's total run stops among DL, and his PFF run stop percentage was ranked 108th in the nation.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I really liked Harmon on first watch. The pass rush skills are nice. But a deeper dive definitely shows some warts.
DeleteIsn't Kenneth Grant ahead of him on most draft boards?
ReplyDelete15 days until the draft
ReplyDeleteMatt Maiocco's mock draft 5.0 has the Niners selecting Walter Nolen.👀
ReplyDeleteMM said
Delete"There might be a boom-or-bust element initially, as Nolen can make big plays. But he will have to be coached up to avoid getting out of his gap and allowing yards on inside runs."
Stopping the run is essential in any dominate defense.
I can only imagine how a Dline of Bossa, E. Anderson, Nolen, and Matos might look. Of course the 49ers already have their vision of the 2025 Defensive Front, but except for Bossa, at present three positions on the DL are up in the air. Even with the possibility of drafting Nolen, there is still a need to shore-up the DL.
DeleteHey guys, what does
your potential (wishful) DL look like?
Washington State WR Kyle Williams has a top-30 visit with the 49ers, per Arye Pulli.
ReplyDeleteOhio State DT Tyleik Williams has a pre-draft meeting scheduled with the 49ers, per Schultz Report.
ReplyDeleteIs there a chance that T. Williams can be there at #43? The possible additions of Nolen and T. Williams could be a goldmine.
ReplyDeleteI think there's a decent chance of that, and agree, that combo would be very nice.
DeleteOne mock draft has Shemar Stewart dropping to #43. Another guy that most likely will be there at 43, is ED, Nick Scourton.
ReplyDeleteThey should have an abundance of choices at 43 at every position. They could go a myriad of ways.

11.0% - Dalton Kincaid
10.9% - Tyler Warren
10.7% - Sam LaPorta
10.7% - Isaiah Likely
You guys think there's a better chance of a team wanting to trade up to 43 than 11?
ReplyDeleteSome mock sites now have Shadur Sanders dropping out of the top 12. Perhaps a QB hungry team may want to move to 11 for a shot at him?
ReplyDeleteThe Steelers have shown interest in Shadur, but they don't draft until #21. They might give the 49ers a call for #11 trade.

DeleteThank you.
* S Lathan Ransom. I see him pushing Ji'Ayir Brown for reps by mid season.
* I can see KS using TE Terrance Ferguson in a 12 personnel
package with CMC the RB. He needs to improve his blocking,
but that can be improved with coaching.
* WR Isaac TeSlaa impressed during Senior Bowl week! He's
a project for 9er coaches, Leonard Hankerson and Andrew Hayes-Stoker. Check him out.

DeleteThe Niners tend to surprise everyone with their first-round pick. Have they changed their ways; I doubt it, as usual they will surprise everyone with their pick. I think most Niner fans to include myself, would think the pick is going to be a DL. We shall see.
ReplyDeleteUC,
ReplyDeleteThere is one draftnik that has the 49ers choosing Mich, CB Will Johnson with their first pick. That would be a minor surprise for me, even though he's considered the best in his class.
🔥 Kansas CB Cobee Bryant tells preme football he had a 30-visit with the 49ers.
ReplyDeleteScuttlebutt I have heard is that Kelvin Banks Jr is the 49ers #1 target and top rated OT, and if he's gone, their next target would be Will Johnson.
ReplyDeleteApparently Banks has also landed a coveted gold helmet designation from the 49ers.

Asked Matt Maiocco about the Banks rumor that Scooter mentioned and he said he hasn't heard anything like that.
ReplyDeleteApparently the "source" of the rumour is the same one that said they would take Pearsall. But I would also still take it with a hefty bag of salt.
DeleteWhat is the criteria for a "gold helmet" designation? Trey Lance had a gold helmet designation didn't he?
Delete
DeleteThe designation is reserved for players considered “exemplary” in several areas, including performance, leadership, and intelligence. Both Lance and McKivitz were gold helmet players.
Hopefully they've changed the definition?

An interesting article that may give insight into the 9ers thinking?
ReplyDelete* 49ers’ belief in 2022 selection could influence their plans at premium position in 2025 draft. The 49ers enter the 2025 NFL Draft with tackle a clear need, but they may not address it early in part because of their belief in a 2022 selection.

One alternative: Puni on the left
DeleteI think the choice comes down to either Mykel Williams or Walter Nolen.
ReplyDeleteRazor
DeleteI don't disagree, but it may depend on where JL & KS think they'll get drafted? Are they're willing trade down and risk losing them to another team? Especially Nolen, I'm seeing him on some draft boards in mid 1st Rd. Other draft boards as late as early 2nd Rd.
13 days until the draft
ReplyDeleteDraftmas Santa should be loading up his sleigh.
ReplyDeleteSomething that lends some credence to the rumours the 49ers really like Kelvin Banks Jr - rumours are also swirling that both the Dolphins and Texans are very high on him too. Both run similar offensive schemes.
ReplyDeleteAlso... Tony Pauline, who is very well connected, has the 49ers taking Banks round 1 then Landon Jackson round 2 in his latest 2 round mock.
Taking Banks at 11 might be a bigger surprise than McGlinchey was at 9.
ReplyDeleteScooter Razor
ReplyDeleteI'd be surprised if the 9ers drafted Banks at #11. But if they do draft him at #11, I'd interpret that to mean they may let McKivitz walk next year and replace him with Banks? IMO, the 9ers would start him at OG next to TW and see if he fits at right tackle before deciding on McKivitz?
I wouldn't be surprised to see them draft an OT at 11, though I had been thinking DT or Edge more likely.
DeleteI get razor's point about the investment in OL, but they have shown a willingness to invest at OT and a desire to have a top LT. Hard to find those guys drafting late.
While Williams may say he wants to play to 40, you don't know how much longer he'll go for. So getting a top rated OT when you have a high pick does make sense to me, if they choose to go that direction.
As for where to play him, yeah, I suspect he'd start at LG, though they may prefer to have him at RT and move McKivitz to RG and Puni to LG.
Continuity is too important to move McKivitz in my opinion, and if he has another good year then yes, he'll likely leave for 20M to play for another team. Spencer Burford could very well be in the mix for that swing OT position.
DeleteI'd be fine with K. Banks as 11 and Charles Grant with one of their 3rd picks. Banks would compete for a D1 starter and Grant could lock up a starting job in 2026 while receiving some snaps this season. These are two players that could eventually become foundational on the OL for years
ReplyDeleteGreg Cosell and I are on the same page regarding Walter Nolen:
ReplyDelete“The guy that fascinates me the most is Walter Nolen. He has plays in the SEC that look like Jalen Carter's tape at Georgia.”
RJ Harvey was clocked at 18.5 mph in the first 10 yards of his 40 yard dash, the fastest speed in the NFL Draft 2025 RB class.
ReplyDeleteTuten 18.4
Smith 18.4
Blue 18.2
I think with Williams/Stewart/Nolen you ask Kris Kocurek who he wants and trust the process. I'm still highly dubious of them taking an OT or iOL before Round 3 at the earliest.
ReplyDeleteI'm getting the feeling at Edge the 49ers are seeking a bigger guy that provides strong run D plus some pass rush upside. If they go edge round 1, look for Williams or Stewart to be the pick. Round 2, Landon Jackson. Other options later - Femi or Elijah Roberts.
DeleteAgreed.
DeletePlays after the first read. Beyond LOS...
ReplyDeleteMilroe: 93.2 PFF pass (35/51) + 8.3 YPC scrambling
Ward: 91.5 PFF pass (63/83) + 9.9 YPC
Sanders: 87.0 PFF pass (52/84) + 7.7 YPC
Dart: 76.4 PFF pass (26/44) + 8.6 YPC
Shough: 71.1 PFF pass (43/71) + 5.0 YPC
This gave me an idea that perhaps a team in the 20's uses the depressed trade market in this draft to their advantage and moves up in similar fashion to the way the Chiefs did for Patrick Mahomes for Jalen Milroe. He reads the field and that's not the perception most in the media are pushing.
Steelers...
DeleteScooter
ReplyDeleteIf the 9ers are seeking a bigger guy that provides strong run D at EDGE, then you should include both Nic Scourton, Texas A&M and J.T. Tuimoloau, Ohio State in Rd #2.
Scourton, yes. Though I think he'll go late 1st so I think he's only an option if they trade back from 11 or up from 43.
DeleteJT, I highly doubt. I think they are after a bigger Edge, but they still need to bring some explosiveness. That's not JT's game.
All the guys I listed, as well as Scourton, are guys the 49ers are showing a lot of interest in.
12 days until (as AES would say) draftmas
ReplyDeleteRight around the corner, Coach!
DeleteScooter
ReplyDelete* Williams is 260 with a 4.77s at the Combine and 5 sacks.
* Stewart is 267 with a 459s 40 and a disappointing 1.5 sacks. He
did have 39 pressures and says he needs NFL coaching to reach his true potential.
* JT Tuimoloau is 265, a 4.62s 40 at the Combine and 12.5 sacks.
I'd agree he's better against the run than pressuring the QB, but with
12.5 sacks he has demonstrated the ability to. I'd also say, that like
Stewart, with NFL coaching he'll improve.
* Landon Jackson is 6'6" x 264. Watching his tape, he looks awkward, poor body control and he plays too high (doesn't bend his knees). But despite that, he run a 4.68s 40 at the combine? Is he a project, that with good NFL coaching could become a starter next year?
JT didn't run at the combine, but more importantly isn't explosive on film. Highly doubt he's a guy that is high on the 49ers wish list.
DeleteJackson imo is the most technically savvy of that group. He needs the least coaching up. Yes, he can look a little awkward at times, but he definitely looks explosive which his testing bore out.
The interest in Nolen seems to have tapered off since the Combine. Maybe the 49ers could wait for a team to draft Nolen in the vicinity of 15 -22 (as some mocks now have him). Perhaps that team would be willing to trade Nolen and a 3rd rd pick to the 49ers for their #11?
ReplyDeleteGoes to show paying top dollar for an OL does not guarantee a SB win. However 7 teams that were in the playoffs were in the top ten for money being paid to the OL. Then there is the Ravens...
ReplyDeleteUC,
ReplyDeleteAgree on your assessment of the Ravens. Which also gives rise to the fact that all areas of the team must have enough talent to support weaker areas. That is why the Ravens remained competitive.
The 2024 49ers had obvious holes on Defense, Offense, and Special Teams. Sure, major injuries played a big part. But 2nd depth players were mediocre and except for a couple of FAs the played well, the 24 season highlighted the need for a big reset. The draft can't come soon enough for the 49ers.
Some of those least expensive lines are a product of timing. I assume this is all based on cap hit in 2025, so guys that just signed big deals but have cap hits mostly in future years are considered cheap. And high draft picks on rookie deals are also cheap.
ReplyDeleteI think the main moral of the story here is - draft well so you don't have to overpay for guys in FA.
This draft must be extremely well.

Swinson is a vert interesting prospect for me.
DeleteHe has some real pop in his hands and he has more suddenness than his timed speed indicates.
I am torn on how good of a compliment he would be with Bosa though... as I wonder if Bosa wouldnt be better complimented with a true speed rusher that can get the qb after he is flushed or force him to step up into the pocket.
That said, I think I would take a swing at it because he is solid against the run and collapses the pocket.
More important than a speed rusher opposite Bosa is a player that can set the edge for mine.
DeletePretty sure the 49ers feel the same way razor. Have shown a lot of interest in bigger DEs with explosiveness this year.
DeleteShoup, Swinson would be a great pick imo.

ReplyDeleteBears reached agreement today on a three-year, $40 million extension that includes $31.25 million guaranteed with CB Kyler Gordon. The deal now makes Gordon the NFL’s highest-paid slot corner and contractually ties him to Chicago through the 2028 season.
ReplyDeleteThe deal they made with Lenoir looks pretty good compared to this.
3-year declares from big schools at premium positions are routinely the best players in the draft. Some Day 2 options:

Sanders: 3.61 & 8.7%
It seems that more than a few mock draftsites are leaning towards the 49ers choosing CB, Will Johnson with their #11 pick. WJ undoubtedly is a great talent. But the turf-toe injury is a big concern imho. I suffered the same injury as a high school athlete and can attest to the fact that it is the type of injury that can disrupt a players ability. Our own 49ers HOF'r, Patrick Willis had this injury and it affected his play. Only those who have experienced turf-toe know of the pain that comes with it. Johnson, could turn out to be a perennial All-Pro player or one that spends a lot of time on the injury list.
ReplyDeleteI'd wager everything I had against the Niners drafting a DB at 11.
DeleteToledo defensive tackle Darius Alexander had a Top-30 visit with the 49ers, according to Justin M_NFL.
ReplyDeleteI believe Kyle Williams can be added to the 30 list as well.
