Excellent stats and achievement from Brock. But, let's not forget that the bar has been set very high for every current and future QB with the 49ers.

Old Coach, GEEP, Mug and myself have intimated the same thing regarding this area in Purdy's growth. Brock has not cemented this area as of now. But, like SY, I believe he will get there.
Purdy looked great yesterday. His style of play really reminds me of Jeff Garcia. I just need to see 2 more things to develop my final opinion of BP. I need to see him lead a couple of comeback wins, comebacks of 2 scores or more. Lastly I need to see him win a SB. Right now I see him as a top 10 QB. imho

* Not only the Eagles, but the Seahags at Seattle on a short 4 day week and then Seattle again at Levi..... * IMO, all 3 games will be trench warfare and will likely determine who wins the NFC West and has the home field advantage for the division title game.
He's basically had 16 regular season starts now, if you include the game he came in early to replace JG last year. So effectively one full season of regular starting experience.
ReplyDeleteOver this time he is 13-3, has completed 69% of his passes, thrown for over 4,000 yards at 9.1 yards per attempt, has a 31:9 TD to intercept ratio, and a passer rating of 112.2.
Those are numbers any long time veteran QB would be very happy with in a season. He's done it in his first 16 games.
As far as I am aware only Pat Mahomes had a better first 16 regular season starts, and Dan Marino was about on par. He's an excellent QB.

I assume your point is that you can only know if someone was great in hindsight...? Which is of course true... but there are also usually some pretty good early indicators along the way.

Kaep looked good for an inexperienced QB, showed a lot of potential. Also showed a lot of areas to improve on.

That's the difference here - Purdy is playing very well for a veteran QB, not just for a rookie QB.
Importantly, Purdy has also gotten better this year than he was last year. It was the opposite for Kaep.

2) BP lost without Deebo and TW.
3) Purdy has yet to put the team on his back and come from behind to win a game.

DeleteAll I meant was I don't believe there is much more Purdy could reasonably be expected to have done than what he has done so far. He's a young QB and will make mistakes. That should be expected. What shouldn't be expected is how well he has performed outside those mistakes, or how few mistakes he's really made. His level of play to date should not be the expectation, even for a #1 overall pick.
His level of play to date has been more aligned with what you would expect from a high level veteran QB. And that is quite remarkable.
And whether he plays well, poorly, or somewhere in between over the next three games shouldn't change how he is perceived one way or the other, imo.
I apologize in advance if I'm wrong here. But topics regarding Brock over the last week with one asking if BP should be considered a FQB seems to have a sense of Purdy being force-fed on me, imho.

But I still can't get past the fact that BP couldn't win without Deebo and Trent in the lineup.
The loss against Cleveland I'll put on Moody. But the subsequent losses with Purdy throwing critical Int's in the 4th QTR, are a constant reminder to me, that Brock still has a way to go.
Yep, he isn't the finished article. He'll still make mistakes. Easy to forget he's a young QB that will make mistakes given how well he's played.

DeleteHere is where I stand with Purdy.
He is the best QB that Shanahan has had in his 49ers tenure. Period. Proof....I have never seen KS talk about a QB like he does with Purdy. At the same time, IMO Purdy is not at Montana/Young level....YET (Doesn't mean it won't happen in the future...he is just not there yet).
IMHO, he failed the test of being discussed at Mahomes/Hurts or MVP level. For that to happen, he has to Keep up his play till the playoffs and come back from behind in a road game/hostile environment at some point this season.
Take yesterday's game....Hurts was having the worst game of his season. Then when the play had to be made, in the rain, he threw an absolute bomb to his WR which eventually got them the TD. Mahomes threw a brutal INT yesterday, but with 2 mins to go, he still put his team on his back and almost got them through (albeit WR drops). Purdy is not at that level yet. If he was, we won't have lost the Bengals/Vikings game (I won't put Browns game on him).
But all of the above, doesn't mean I don't appreciate what the kid is doing. He is miles better than Jimmy and we went to a SuperBowl with Jimmy.
The game against the Eagles will tell us a lot about Purdy and this team. Until then, lets enjoy the ride.

ReplyDeleteI believe that most of us have said the same thing over the last week or so. Even Steve Young referenced this same thought in a recent interview. You are correct, we will have a much better view on Purdy over the next few games.

Purdy's reality is, with his arm he needs to be measurably better than either Mahomes or Hurts to reach the same level both record and stats wise. He may accomplish that but it won't be easy. I believe the 9ers need to keep on surrounding him with blue chip talent at the skill positions. It looks like Banks may play Thurs. night and Feliciano may slide over to RG. Should the 49ers win? Will the 49ers win? If they were playing Sunday I would say yes to both questions but I absolutely hate Thurs game so I just don't know.

ReplyDeleteThis game is being televised by NBC. The last time the 49ers lost to Seattle at home on Thanksgiving, NBC laid out a big Thanksgiving table for Russell Wilson and Richard Sherman right on the 49ers logo. 49ers better win so this doesn't happen again, lol.

ReplyDeleteI have to again express my dismay around the narrative that Purdy has arm issues. To my untrained eye his ball velocity is around 54 mph which is league average. He can make any throw on the field.

I personally don't have an issue with Brocks arm. He's putting the ball where it has to be. And his anticipation is great. I, need to see Purdy in some comeback wins and not make critical mistakes in the 4th QTR when the game is on the line.

ReplyDeleteOf course it's a team game. But we know that no other team member has the ball in their hands more than the QB. If Brock is going to receive high praise (which is well deserved) in winning games, why shouldn't he also receive criticism in poor games? And, the fact that he lost 3 game's with key players out, in all honesty, leaves open the question whether Brock can put the team on his back in crunch time.

I dislike Brock and want him to fail. That line of thought would be foolish. He's the future of the 49ers. Imo, Purdy has to prove that he can carry the team when he's not surrounded by key players. I'm looking forward in seeing him winning is this scenario. I don't believe that this is asking for too much.
How many QBs really win a lot of games without a good supporting cast/ missing key players from their supporting cast?

ReplyDeleteYou guys are missing a very important fact here. These QBs have reached the top of the mountain, which cements their legacy. Maybe Brock will do the same in his career. But, at this point, he's only standing in shadow of the above mentioned.

Jimmy G, (pro-football-reference) has 13 comeback wins in his career. 1, with the Patriots, 2, with Raiders. 10 with the 49ers. Purdy, will get his during his career, no doubt.

Purdy put the 49ers into FG position to win without a healthy #71, #23 and #19 against the best home defense in the NFL.
ReplyDeleteThat won't show up on a career win/loss record. Although, I did put the Cleveland loss on Moody in fairness to Brock. But if Purdy can't beat teams with a great defense, how will he fare against strong defenses in the playoffs? We'll find out in a couple of months.
