Highest adjusted net yards per attempt in NFL history over a full season:1. 2004 Peyton Manning: 9.8 2. 2011 Aaron Rodgers: 9.4 3. 2023 Brock Purdy: 9.1*
That's pretty good comany, wouldn't you agree?
Tampa Bay ranks 30th in DVOA against tight ends which equates to 31st in receiving yards allowed to TEs this season. Meantime, Kittle ent...
Excellent stats and achievement from Brock. But, let's not forget that the bar has been set very high for every current and future QB with the 49ers.
ReplyDeleteIs that fair? No. Yet, all 49ers fans know what the bar is.
"That's pretty good company, wouldn't you agree?" Yes I would..... BUT...As AES says, Montana and Young have set the 9er bar high!
ReplyDeleteFor BP to ascend to the JM and SY level, he'll need to get the 9ers
to a SB. The next 3 games should tell us if BP can ascend that mountain this season......

Recent comments from Steve Young on Brock Purdy...
Delete"It's like the NBA today, and you've got five guys in the league, or six, that you get the ball in their hands in the last couple of drives, and they will get it done. And Brock needs to constantly work extra to be one of those guys, but I think he can."
Old Coach, GEEP, Mug and myself have intimated the same thing regarding this area in Purdy's growth. Brock has not cemented this area as of now. But, like SY, I believe he will get there.
Purdy looked great yesterday. His style of play really reminds me of Jeff Garcia. I just need to see 2 more things to develop my final opinion of BP. I need to see him lead a couple of comeback wins, comebacks of 2 scores or more. Lastly I need to see him win a SB. Right now I see him as a top 10 QB. imho
ReplyDeleteJeff Garcia? Not even close for mine.
DeleteRazor,
DeleteNot his skill or ability just his style of play
The Freakin' Chiefs! SMH.
ReplyDeleteI thought they will defeat the Eagles (and do us a favor) with the way the 1st half played out. Their WRs can't catch...Chiefs are beatable.
Eagles look resilient. Gonna be Trench warfare for the NFC.
Mugeek9er
Delete* KC receivers forgot their stickum!
* Not only the Eagles, but the Seahags at Seattle on a short 4 day week and then Seattle again at Levi..... * IMO, all 3 games will be trench warfare and will likely determine who wins the NFC West and has the home field advantage for the division title game.
He's basically had 16 regular season starts now, if you include the game he came in early to replace JG last year. So effectively one full season of regular starting experience.
ReplyDeleteOver this time he is 13-3, has completed 69% of his passes, thrown for over 4,000 yards at 9.1 yards per attempt, has a 31:9 TD to intercept ratio, and a passer rating of 112.2.
Those are numbers any long time veteran QB would be very happy with in a season. He's done it in his first 16 games.
As far as I am aware only Pat Mahomes had a better first 16 regular season starts, and Dan Marino was about on par. He's an excellent QB.
Scooter
ReplyDelete* In 5 years will you, or anyone, remember BP's stats for the last 16 games BP has played? NOPE!
* In 5 years will you, and all 9er fans, remember BP winning a division title and a SB? YEP! And the LVII SB trophy will set next to the other 5 Lombardi trophies the 9ers have won!
I assume your point is that you can only know if someone was great in hindsight...? Which is of course true... but there are also usually some pretty good early indicators along the way.
DeleteWe're getting to see a young QB display greatness at the start of his career. His level of play is as good as any QB over their first 16 starts not named Mahomes. Indicators are looking pretty darn good. Enjoy the ride.
Scooter
ReplyDelete"I assume your point is that you can only know if someone was great in hindsight...? Which is of course true."
* Shall we discuss Kaepernick, he had pretty good early indicators. Like taking the 9ers to a SB?
* There have been many QB's who have started hot, before failing to take the next step. QB's like Robert Griffin III, Baker Mayfield and Teddy Bridgewater, to name three..
* To be CLEAR, I'm NOT comparing BP to any other QB, nor am I trying predict his future. And yes, the Mr Irrelevant has impressed me with how great he's played!. * But, to reiterate my previous observation, when the 9ers lost three games in a row, BP didn't put the 9ers on his back and pull out a win. In fact, he threw INT's that helped seal a 9er loss.
* Again, the next 3 games will tell us if BP can ascend the mountain of greatness, win a Division title and take the 9ers to another SB. I for one, hope he will do both! * But until he does, as you point out....I'll rely in hindsight...
Kaep looked good for an inexperienced QB, showed a lot of potential. Also showed a lot of areas to improve on.
DeleteCompared to Purdy his first 16 starts were considerably less impressive. Both from the eye test and the stats.
Same goes for the other guys you mentioned.
That's the difference here - Purdy is playing very well for a veteran QB, not just for a rookie QB.
Importantly, Purdy has also gotten better this year than he was last year. It was the opposite for Kaep.
I highly doubt the next 3 games will tell us anything we don't already know about him.
Scooter
Delete* That's the DIFFERENCE here - Purdy is playing very well for a veteran QB, not just for a rookie QB."
* EXCEPT THIS FACT: During the Niners' 3 game losing streak, 1) BP had 6 turnovers, including 5 interceptions.
2) BP lost without Deebo and TW.
3) Purdy has yet to put the team on his back and come from behind to win a game.
* Has BP won a Division title, or taken the 9ers to a SB? NOPE!
* Kaep became the 9ers' starter in the middle of the 2012 season after Smith suffered a concussion. He remained the starting QB for the rest of the season, leading the 9ers to a
SB! And I believe, the reason they play the game? RIGHT.
* "I highly doubt the next 3 games will tell us anything we don't already know about him."
I respectfully disagree Scooter. If BP plays the next 3 games without throwing an INT that cost the 9ers the game, then it will tell us something we don't already know about him.
It will remind us that RESPECT IS EARNED, NOT GIVEN and will either prove your point, or mine. I hope it will prove you're right
I think what we have here is some impossible standards being required by fans.
DeleteIf Purdy hasn't already earned respect, you're in for a lifetime of disappointment and unfulfilled expectations I'm afraid.
Also, I am curious how the upcoming 3 regular season games will magically tell us more about Purdy than the previous 16.
On re-read, that came across more disparaging than intended. Apologies.
DeleteAll I meant was I don't believe there is much more Purdy could reasonably be expected to have done than what he has done so far. He's a young QB and will make mistakes. That should be expected. What shouldn't be expected is how well he has performed outside those mistakes, or how few mistakes he's really made. His level of play to date should not be the expectation, even for a #1 overall pick.
His level of play to date has been more aligned with what you would expect from a high level veteran QB. And that is quite remarkable.
And whether he plays well, poorly, or somewhere in between over the next three games shouldn't change how he is perceived one way or the other, imo.
I apologize in advance if I'm wrong here. But topics regarding Brock over the last week with one asking if BP should be considered a FQB seems to have a sense of Purdy being force-fed on me, imho.
ReplyDeleteI've seen very impressive stats including the recent one that puts Brock in elite company. And that's great and yes, I'm enjoying the ride.
But I still can't get past the fact that BP couldn't win without Deebo and Trent in the lineup.
The loss against Cleveland I'll put on Moody. But the subsequent losses with Purdy throwing critical Int's in the 4th QTR, are a constant reminder to me, that Brock still has a way to go.
Yep, he isn't the finished article. He'll still make mistakes. Easy to forget he's a young QB that will make mistakes given how well he's played.
DeleteAES,
DeleteHere is where I stand with Purdy.
He is the best QB that Shanahan has had in his 49ers tenure. Period. Proof....I have never seen KS talk about a QB like he does with Purdy. At the same time, IMO Purdy is not at Montana/Young level....YET (Doesn't mean it won't happen in the future...he is just not there yet).
IMHO, he failed the test of being discussed at Mahomes/Hurts or MVP level. For that to happen, he has to Keep up his play till the playoffs and come back from behind in a road game/hostile environment at some point this season.
Take yesterday's game....Hurts was having the worst game of his season. Then when the play had to be made, in the rain, he threw an absolute bomb to his WR which eventually got them the TD. Mahomes threw a brutal INT yesterday, but with 2 mins to go, he still put his team on his back and almost got them through (albeit WR drops). Purdy is not at that level yet. If he was, we won't have lost the Bengals/Vikings game (I won't put Browns game on him).
But all of the above, doesn't mean I don't appreciate what the kid is doing. He is miles better than Jimmy and we went to a SuperBowl with Jimmy.
The game against the Eagles will tell us a lot about Purdy and this team. Until then, lets enjoy the ride.
Happy Thanksgiving All!
Mug,
ReplyDeleteI believe that most of us have said the same thing over the last week or so. Even Steve Young referenced this same thought in a recent interview. You are correct, we will have a much better view on Purdy over the next few games.
Happy Thanksgiving to All
Purdy's reality is, with his arm he needs to be measurably better than either Mahomes or Hurts to reach the same level both record and stats wise. He may accomplish that but it won't be easy. I believe the 9ers need to keep on surrounding him with blue chip talent at the skill positions. It looks like Banks may play Thurs. night and Feliciano may slide over to RG. Should the 49ers win? Will the 49ers win? If they were playing Sunday I would say yes to both questions but I absolutely hate Thurs game so I just don't know.
ReplyDeleteCoach,
ReplyDeleteThis game is being televised by NBC. The last time the 49ers lost to Seattle at home on Thanksgiving, NBC laid out a big Thanksgiving table for Russell Wilson and Richard Sherman right on the 49ers logo. 49ers better win so this doesn't happen again, lol.
AES,
ReplyDeleteI remember that game well. I hated Sherman the rest of his career...... Well maybe not his whole career but at least until he helped lead the 9ers to the SB. Kinda like Deion Sanders.
Yup!
ReplyDeleteI have to again express my dismay around the narrative that Purdy has arm issues. To my untrained eye his ball velocity is around 54 mph which is league average. He can make any throw on the field.
ReplyDeletePurdy is going to be just fine.
DeleteRazor,
DeleteI too believe that Purdy's arm is Avg to slightly below Avg but I was comparing him to Mahomes and Hurts who like Purdy are extremely accurate but have well above Avg arms.
I think you'd be surprised to find that Hurts has an average arm as well:
Deletehttps://www.pass2win.com/ball-velocity-exposing-the-power-qb.html
I personally don't have an issue with Brocks arm. He's putting the ball where it has to be. And his anticipation is great. I, need to see Purdy in some comeback wins and not make critical mistakes in the 4th QTR when the game is on the line.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't want any other QB other then BP at the moment. His play in the 3 straight losses clearly indicates theres room for growth in crunch time.
AES
DeleteIt's a team game, the team wins and the team losses. There was more to those losses than Purdy's interceptions.
UC,
ReplyDeleteOf course it's a team game. But we know that no other team member has the ball in their hands more than the QB. If Brock is going to receive high praise (which is well deserved) in winning games, why shouldn't he also receive criticism in poor games? And, the fact that he lost 3 game's with key players out, in all honesty, leaves open the question whether Brock can put the team on his back in crunch time.
Nothing wrong with criticism, the elite thrive on it.
DeleteConstructive criticism is welcomed.
DeleteRelentless criticism is curious however.,
DeleteThat may have a lot truth. But, none of them are 49ers QBs.
ReplyDeleteI hope that no one assumes that
I dislike Brock and want him to fail. That line of thought would be foolish. He's the future of the 49ers. Imo, Purdy has to prove that he can carry the team when he's not surrounded by key players. I'm looking forward in seeing him winning is this scenario. I don't believe that this is asking for too much.
How many QBs really win a lot of games without a good supporting cast/ missing key players from their supporting cast?
DeleteScooter, we saw what Mahomes looks like without them.
DeleteYep. Great QBs elevate the players around them. That doesn't mean they excel without good and great players around them.
DeleteI wonder if Mahomes wasn't surrounded by key players if he'd be able to succeed. Could Montana? Young? What about Kurt Warner? Asking for a friend....
ReplyDeleteYou guys are missing a very important fact here. These QBs have reached the top of the mountain, which cements their legacy. Maybe Brock will do the same in his career. But, at this point, he's only standing in shadow of the above mentioned.
DeleteSounds like the point we are "missing" is that a QB shouldn't be labelled great until after the fact.
DeleteI'm fine with that. But we should also accept that what he has done to date is nothing short of remarkable and a very positive sign that he has what is needed to be an after the fact great QB.
Scooter,
DeleteI agree with both of your points.
Not sure if you a poster when Maicco moderate on the old 49ers Blog. But I even rejected the notion that Brady was at Montana's level after winning his first two Superbowl's.
I guess my first reaction when another QB is mentioned next to Montana is to come to his defense.
I fail to see how this notion has anything to do with Purdy having a comeback win this season. Fact, he doesn't have any. And 3 straight losses is proof. I'm not saying that Brock does not have
ReplyDeletethe ability to do this in the future. I'm saying that he hasn't done it, yet.
Jimmy G, (pro-football-reference) has 13 comeback wins in his career. 1, with the Patriots, 2, with Raiders. 10 with the 49ers. Purdy, will get his during his career, no doubt.
TBD.
Purdy put the 49ers into FG position to win without a healthy #71, #23 and #19 against the best home defense in the NFL.
ReplyDeleteThat won't show up on a career win/loss record. Although, I did put the Cleveland loss on Moody in fairness to Brock. But if Purdy can't beat teams with a great defense, how will he fare against strong defenses in the playoffs? We'll find out in a couple of months.
ReplyDeleteI really like his chances, AES.
ReplyDeleteI do as well.
ReplyDeletePurdy
ReplyDeletePass Rating 115.1 1st
Comp pct 70.2% 1st
TD/Att 6.5% 1st
Yards/Att 9.7 1st
Yards/Comp 13.8 1st
Purdy is also letting the deep ball rip. This season, he has completed 22 of 33 passes of 20 or more air yards for 684 yards, seven touchdowns, one interception, and a passer rating of 136.7.
Every great quarterback that there ever was, puts the ball in the hands of his playmakers, and they have a lot of playmakers.
...Doug Farrar and Greg Cosell
Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
ReplyDeleteMatt Maiocco this week said that anyone who questions Purdy’s arm strength, either isn’t watching the games or they are just stupid.
ReplyDeleteWell, Maicco used the word "dumb" not stupid. Which upon reading your extended version of his quote, is your word not his.
ReplyDeleteI was surprised to see S. Womack last night, I didn't know he had been activated. With the addition of Womack and Luter and the recent play of Thomas I wonder if they might release Oliver? I believe the 9ers next game should put to rest most of the BP discussion.
ReplyDelete
