ReplyDeleteOh well, so much for the artificial deadline. Nothing to be any more concerned about today than yesterday, but sure wish they'd just get it sorted.
ReplyDeleteIf the 49ers are intent on keeping Trent, why wait until April before the draft? Will some current players be cut to make more room to satisfy TWs asking price? Just show a good sign of faith by working out a mutual agreement by taking care of him a.s.a.p.
ReplyDeleteThey're likely working on a new deal right now. As long as they're confident that he'll show up for training camp, there's no reason to not do a deal.

DeleteMel Kiper is sticking to his guns on the 49ers taking Lomu at 27. I would rate that at 30% potential pick on Lomu.

I doubt Lomu makes it that far but if he did, he'd be the ideal candidate to play LG and LT in a couple years.

ReplyDelete1. De'Angelo Ponds. Yeah, he's short. Yeah, he'll get beat in the NFL at times because of it. I don't care, he's an elite cover man and as feisty as it comes. Going to be a good one.
2. Keylan Rutledge. Tough, physical mauler that can move. Type of interior OL that tends to be good.
4a. De'Zhaun Stribling. Nice size, good speed and acceleration, nice release package. Been productive since his freshman year. Also an excellent blocker.
4b. Eli Heidenreich. RB/WR that provides nice versatility and toughness, and someone that can replicate some of what CMC provides.
4c. Mikail Kamara. Yeah, he's undersized and lacks length. But he's all effort all day, with nice hand usage and a good first step. Type of guy that's underappreciated for 10 years.
4d. Devan Boykin. Ok, maybe I like Indiana players too much. But again, another guy that plays well above his tools. Instinctive NCB/S that knows where to be and makes stops.
Boykin is being rated too low by the draft gurus in my opinion.

Also sounds like his hamstring may have flared up during his training.
That is quite some time for a grade 2 strain to heal. I'd put him up there with one of the best chances of sliding possibly into the 20's.
Interesting. I still think Tyson is the one guy in the consensus top 3 WRs that Shanahan would be tempted to trade up for if he starts sliding.

ReplyDeleteThere's not many positions where players get better after 30. I don't mind taking older guys after round 2, especially at positions you don't often give 2nd contracts too, but early picks at premium positions (other than maybe QB) on guys that will be 25 as rookies is a no go for me.
DeleteThere's a couple of factors in play (1) giving a 2nd contract to guy entering his 30s always adds risk, so you may only get 1 good contract out of them (2) how much of their college success came from being a grown man playing against kids?

Washington OL Carver Willis has shown terrific versatility throughout the pre-draft process. NFL scouts believe he could have 5-position versatility. He's been in demand, with 30 visits and virtual meetings. Reminds me of Spencer Burford....

Outside of the strong desire many have to see the team draft an OT, what is the reason to actually take one this year? It's a pretty crappy OT class relative to other years. Not a great top end, not a lot of depth.

Doesn't matter to those who want to see them draft OT. They think all they have to do is draft one in Round 1 and all things will be right in the universe. Ask the Chargers how that's worked out for them.

DeleteIf they sign Williams the only reason they might draft an OT in the first 2 rounds is that they could move him inside until TW retires. Signing TW is a must if that some how falls through they could end up a sub .500 team. My biggest fear other than not signing TW is that they don't sign/draft an IOL and settle for starting Toth.
There is no "settle" for a starter. It is earned and if Toth earns it, I don't see the issue.

DeleteWhat I don't get is the why in a class that is as low on both top end talent and depth as this one? Why force a pick on an OT this year of all years, especially when you already have 4 OTs on the roster your comfortable going into the season with?
Yes, they should add an OG. Good news is the iOL group is better than the OT class this year. But I wouldn't be trying to find TWs replacement, I'd just be looking to get an OG. Maybe one that can take over from Brendel down the line.
Look for an offensive lineman with versatility. Can play all 5 in a pinch. That's where I think they go day 3.

DeleteAnother question: Re the Trent situation, Lomu might not be there when they pick and even if he is I’ve read from Zierlein that he’s at least a year away. What if Trent threatens to hold out? Who’s on the roster they can start at LT? Might there be a trade in the works for a starting calibre player?
Why would it surprise you, razor? After Sadiq and Stowers, looks like it's viewers choice on the 3rd best TE. I think s lit of teams will see untapped potential in Delp. Could easily see him as s day 2 pick.
