Close To The Vest

  1. The 9ers have an elite offense, but are they a DT short of being a top defense? Will G. Halton be the one? (M. Williams return will help)! Do the 9ers need to trade for top DT, or do the 9ers look to the 2027 draft?

    1. Geep,
I think the 49ers should take a look at Mazi Smith he recently was signed to Miami's PS. If he doesn't interest them I would like to see them bring in Linval Joseph, Bryan Mone and Christian Wilkins for tryouts and sign the one who is closest to first day ready. If none of those players interest them I think they should use a 27 5th round pick or a 28 4th round pick on a 2 down run stuffer. The problem with trying to make a trade right now is how many teams are even close to giving up on this year and looking to the future?

    2. Agree. Imho, I don't believe that the 49ers are in immediate emergency mode for a DL. Osa is a proven vet and Gracen looks like a burgeoning star. The NFL trade deadline is on Nov.10, which allows the team time to evaluate if a move is necessary. GEEP, hopefully the 49ers will not need to bring someone in. But, I do believe that they will draft a couple of DL in next year's draft either way.

do you think the 9ers should call up DT McKinnley Jackson for a tryout?

Of the 4 DT prospects you listed, IMO, Christian Wilkins would be my choice. (if he passes a physical for his foot)
But I doubt the 9ers would be willing to sign him to anything close to the 4-year, $110 million deal signed with the Raiders in 2024.

    5. Indy's going nowhere this year. What would it take to get back D. Buckner?

    6. I like Wilkins as well. If he's available at a bargain price, it could be a good signing. But, I would only like the move if the DL has another injury. They may bring up McKinnely or Givens in the meantime. Valdez may also have an outside chance to bring up.
      TBD

RE D Buckner: My concern would be
      1) His age-32 Y/O and durability is a question mark. He missed 12 combined games over the 2024 and 2025 seasons, culminating in his December 2025 neck surgery. He'd also have to pass a physical
      2) t Buckner signed to a 2-year, $46,000,000 extension for the 2025 - 2026 season. Again, more than I believe the 9ers are willing to pay? But who knows if JL wants to trade for him?
IMO, he'd be a candidate for 2027 if the 9ers are interested?

  2. Am I the only one here who thinks the 49ers should be extra cautious with Evans and sit him all week at practice and for Sundays game? I believe if his health this season is anything like last season the 49ers SB hopes are doomed. I think they need to put him in bubble wrap and protect him as much as possible. I think Ariz is the perfect week to protect him. imho

  3. Niners are surrendering 3.86 yards per rushing attempt, which ranks 13th in the NFL.

    1. I saw that stat, I also saw the first half of the Dolphin game.

  4. I expect that stat to steadily improve as the year progresses. Also, the return of a healthy Mykel can give the D a top 10 ranking.

  8. LG Connor Colby against Zach Sieler (Had 25.5 sacks since '23 for Miami). He had no sacks, no quarterback hits, and no pressures on Sunday.

  9. Currently Brock Purdy is:
    -4th in passer rating (125.6)
    -1st in completion % (80.4)
    -3rd in TD% (8.9)
-5th in yards per attempt (8.8)
-1st in QBR by a lot (95.7, Prescott is next at 86.7)

    1. Razor,
Do you know what the difference is of passer rating and QBR?

      Delete
    2. One is an old passer only stat (PR) and the other is ESPN's that claims to measure a qb's overall value through not just passing but rushing, sacks, etc.

      Delete
    3. Also, numerically ESPN QBR is a number in the range 0-100, while passer rating tops out at 158.3. The passer rating formula is quite simplistic compared to QBR, involving only five data points (attempts, completions, passing yards, TDs and INTs). Many fans use QBR and passer rating interchangeably leading to confusion, as the average passer rating in 2025 was 91.4, but the average QBR for quarterbacks in a season is always 50.0 by design.

  11. Virginia Tech TE Luke Reynolds (6-4, 250) is a player to keep an eye on. 12 catches, 107 yards, and a TD last week against Maryland. Looks like an ascending prospect at a position of need.

Yes! I've got Reynolds on my board. He has 25 receptions for 265 yards and 4 TD's over first 3 games, including 12-catches for 107-yards against Maryland.
I have him as a 2nd Rd draft pick for now, but he could make it to Rd #1
Where do you see him getting draft at

    1. Excellent addition. I suspect he'll quickly become one of the top 3 WRs on the 49ers roster, even when Kirk is back.

    2. I like the idea of regulating Cowing to just PR duties. Purdy needs a vet that'll catch everything and be in the right place at the right time.

    3. I predict he gets 30+ targets and adds 500+ yards and 4 TD's.

  16. I keep hearing rumors of the 49ers trading for DeForest Buckner. After watching Monday nights game he obviously has gas left in the tank but is he really a run stuffer or is he a penetrator like Halton and O.O. I remember that Armstead was the run defender while Buckner was more of a pass rusher. The 49ers need a NT who takes on double teams. Is Buckner that kind of player?

    ReplyDelete
  17. I highly doubt they trade for Buckner. They got a run stuffer on their practice squad in McKinnley Jackson.

  18. I don't see Shanahan trading Jones either unless a team ponies up a '27 1st round pick.

    1. A 27 1st rounder or multiple 27 picks might do it. a 2nd and a 3rd or a 2nd ans a 4th

    2. I'd be shocked if Shanahan accepted anything less than a 1st.
