Scooter's SOS Question

Scooter posed the question, who has the easiest remaining schedule?

  1. Well, looks like that graphic agrees with me! Of the 3 NFC North teams and 49ers (i.e., those the 49ers will most likely be vying for the 7th playoff spot), then 49ers have the easiest remaining schedule.

  2. As long as there's no head to head with the Bears or Panthers when it comes to a wildcard, they're in good shape. If they lose to the Panthers and the Panthers go on to win their division, the head to head would come against the Buccaneers.

    1. I find it hard to get on board with the Panthers really making a push for the playoffs. And if the 49ers lose to the Panthers I think the 49ers probably don't deserve to make the playoffs. It would certainly make things a lot tougher.

    1. Romo ranked 29th out of 33 qualifying kickers through 10 weeks this season. 12/13 on XPs, 11/14 on FGs.

  4. Peters signs Moody off the Bears practice squad. Must've been the one who pounded the table for him, lol.

  5. For me to get excited for the playoffs the Niners must due one thing, that is to win their remaining games. If they can beat the Colts and Hawks and Bears then they have a legitimate chance to go far in the playoffs.

Saleh you have a short time to mold some sort of a defense.

    1. I don't think anyone wants to face Shanahan in the playoffs given his 8-4 record.

    2. Crazy thought... but playing a team like Philly or GB in the snow or bad weather might be SF's best way to advance. No pass rush against any decent qb in good weather would be terrible for this D imo. AZ was giving up something like a 40% pressure rate only to give up a 10% pressure rate with even more linemen injured than normal.

      Delete
  6. I don't think this D will get us to the playoffs. I'm not sure everyone realizes how bad the D was yesterday. They gave up 488 yard lost another 110 yards on gains that were called back because of penalties. That is approx 600 yards that Cardinals offense gained yesterday and that is an O playing without their starting QB, best RB and best WR. I will root my butt off for my 9ers. I just don' see them winning 3 out of the next 6 unless Seattle has clinched their spot by the last week.

    1. Saleh blitzed Stafford 50% ....... he tried. But I agree Coach, they cannot allow the better QB's time to pick them apart. Just not sure what the answer is. I do wonder if they aren't getting pressure off the Edge w speed using Huff and Beal, perhaps just embracing a bull rush w Ferrell and larger DL's out there to collapse the pocket? Aldon Smith utilized the bull rush most of the time- too bad we don't have a Justin Smith ... perhaps Valdez can get some snaps inside soon.

      Delete
    2. I think the only answer is score around 50 points. If Ariz. had only committed half of their penalties they might have cored 48 points. It is too much to ask the O to score in the high 40s consistently

      Delete
    3. I think it's more the reason they'll get bundled in the first week of playoffs. They should be good enough to get them there though.

A lot of those yards were in garbage time. And adding yards taken away by penalties isn't really fair - those plays came back for a reason.

    4. I agree Scooter- I think the D was "fine"- but the issue will be when they play a stellar QB who can dissect them.... PFF grades - if the link works. Snap counts of interest......https://www.reddit.com/r/49ers/comments/1ozlxo1/pff_week_11_defense_grades/#lightbox

    5. I suspect this defense continues to grow over the next 6 weeks.

    6. OldCoach, Saleh's plan was to bleed clock. They were in soft coverage the final 3 drives by the Cardinals with 43 of Brissett's passes traveling less than 10 yards and only 9/57 were beyond 15.

  7. LG Splits Rotation Sunday:

Spencer Burford - 100% pass block win rate + league low (among guards) 45.5% run block win rate. He played 29 snaps.

Ben Bartch - Clean sheet in pass block win rate but had league-best 92.3% run block win rate. He played 28 snaps.

  8. Niners +12.4 EPA on special teams vs. ARI - their highest mark under Shanahan.

  9. Gay is only 13-19 on FGs this season, but 9-10 from less than 50 yards.
Last season, he was 31-37 but a perfect 28-28 from less than 50.

  10. Nick Martin had 7 tackles, 5 solo in 14 snaps.

  11. I think NFC West will have 3 playoff teams - Rams, Seattle and us.
Among NFC North, I think the Lions will make the playoffs. They have games against Giants and host the Cowboys/Steelers and play each of their division opponents once. So 10 wins possible.

Packers play Bears twice, Vikings twice and play the Ravens/Broncos/Lions. They can still get 4 wins easily and with their Tie and .5 game advantage, they will squeak by.

Bears have the worst schedule and might be the odd one out. All in All, I think the NFC North will kill itself and will have only 2 teams in the playoffs....my prediction is Lions/Packers.

I don't see Panthers making the playoffs....their schedule is brutal. They play the Bucs twice, still have games against Seattle, Rams and Us.

    1. I'd like to see them get to around 20pts allowed. The 49ers offense should be good for 20+ pts per game. Of course, in the playoffs these stats can fluctuate. But, they must get there first.

  15. This needs to improve over the last six games for the 9ers to make the playoffs.
Dee Winters: allowed completions on all 11 targets for 87 yards
Upton Stout: allowed 6 completions on 7 targets for 80 yards
Deommodore Lenoir: allowed 4 catches on 7 targets for 63 yards Nick Martin: allowed catches on all 4 targets for 49 yards
Malik Mustapha: allowed catches on all 3 targets for 45 yards
Jason Pinnock: allowed catches on all 5 targets for 43 yards and a TD
Curtis Robinson: allowed 5 catches on 7 targets for 28 yards and a TD
Renardo Green: allowed 3 catches on 4 targets for 21 yards
Chase Lucas: allowed catches on both targets for 17 yards
Ji’Ayir Brown: allowed 2 catches on 3 targets for 12 yards
Tatum Bethune: allowed 1 catch for 5 yards
Darrell Luter: allowed 1 catch for 2 yards
    * Stout received the highest grade of his career (72.1). The rookie nickelback allowed 6 catches on 7 targets for 80 yards, but he recorded 7 total tackles, * stops, and a forced fumble.
    * Lenoir earned the 2nd highest overall grade of 86.7 and a 90.4 coverage grade, allowing 4 catches on 7 targets for 63 yards with an interception and a pass breakup.

    1. If they're winning by 3 scores before most of those numbers are realised I'm absolutely fine with it.

    2. I agree. Those stats mostly mean that the strategy was to give them short underneath throws. In a tight game, the strategy would have been completely different and those throws would have been contested by the defensive backs.

    Pass Rush: 1st
    WIN%: 1st (14.9%)
    WIN% True Pass Set: 2nd (23.1%)

    1. That's exactly why I was touting him for the 49ers pre draft. But once Collins, West, and Mykel (when he returns) reach their full potential the 49ers D will put fear in the hearts of opponents.

      Delete
    2. Yeah, would have liked getting him. But, also happy with how Mykel looked before getting hurt.

      Delete
    3. Nolen was my first choice. We'll see how their careers parallel down the road. Mykel is a 49er and he is who I'm rolling with.

      Delete
    4. Also, Collins has really surprised me, in a good way. I thought he had the highest bust potential of their picks. Got off to a slow start, but I think he has quietly been their best rookie alongside Mykel this year. A couple of really nice building blocks for the future along the DL there.

And hopefully West can improve his consistency and become a valuable starter/ role player. He's started to show signs of improvement the past few weeks.

      Delete
    5. I believe that Mykel, Collins, and West are the pieces that the 49ers are going to build their future around. It may take a little more time for the young LBs to find their groove. But they have already shown flashes this season. With Bosa and the Predator back next year, the defense is going to roll through the league.

      Delete
    6. They should draft another LB as this draft is loaded.

      Delete
    7. I agree, Razor. I believe another couple of OLman should be drafted. But with Punni getting better and Burford making some noise along with Colby's development, I'm starting to rethink my sentiments of drafting heavy on Olinemen early in the draft. There is a need for a Center.

      Delete
    8. Sammy Omosigho, LB, Oklahoma is another converted safety I like in Round 3.

      Delete
    9. Thanks, I'll check him out.

      Delete
    10. If a really good LB is there for the taking in round 3/4, sure take him. But I don't see it as a position of priority this offseason. Warner, Winters, Bethune, Gifford, Martin and Robinson is fine behind a good DL.

DL and OL are the priorities imo. And maybe a WR if they don't think Aiyuk can get back to 100%.

      Delete
    11. I wouldnt be surprised if they went with a pass rusher again in the first rd. Bosa and Mykell are coming back from ACL's and Huff is likely a cap casualty. When you couple that with an OT draft class that most experts while high on them originally have pivoted on. Now calling it underwhelming.
In truth from the mock's I have seen prospects are largely scattered.

      Delete
    12. I highly doubt they cut Huff, but yes, this year has shown the need for more pass rush help. I think round 1 will be a DE or DT at this stage.

I recall at the start of the year a few people saying the OT class was going to be strong in 2026, and I warned against assuming it would remain in high regard by the end of the year. Pre-season draft projections are often changed considerably by the time the draft rolls around.

      Delete
    13. Strength of this draft is iOL and LB. I think Huff is still under contract for next season isn't he?

      Delete
    14. Huff certainly is under contract. I think Shoup is more referring to the fact he is on $17M a year, none of which is guaranteed, so could be a cap casualty. But I don't think they'll cut him.

      Delete
    15. Yes. Huff is under contract but his cap hit is 17M and none of is guaranteed. When Looking at the other contracts he is the only clear path to saving a decent amount of cash. There is no way they keep him without a restructure at the least imo.

      Delete
    16. They are currently slated to be $53.7M under the cap prior to doing any business, and have the vast majority of their starters and key backups already under contract for next year. They really have no need to cut Huff.

Also... turns out his cap hit next year is pretty low anyway, so cap savings are only around $5.3M in 2026. The main issue is more that the 49ers would be due to have a cap hit of a little under $12M in 2027 for him despite no longer being under contract.

      Delete
    17. True. But I expect they will want to go after a few free agents this year and they always try to leave a sizable chunk to roll over.
I dont see them paying 17M for a part time edge rusher who needs others to get the qb. I could see the going after Phillips or Mafe who could be cheaper, longer term additions to the line.

  17. We will attack and have the Panthers LB corps chasing their tails.

  18. Niners lead the NFL with the best average starting field position. They’re also the only team that hasn’t started a single drive inside their own 20-yard line all season.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That last stat is wrong, they started a drive inside their 20 against the Cardinals and have had others throughoutthe year. Maybe that's meant to be off kick-offs?

      Delete
  19. The one thing the Niners have accomplished this past year is achieving a winning record and rookies playing lots of snaps. Only two remaining road games. The 1981 team reeled off seven victories in the remaining schedule and formed the identity of Niner ball. I can see six more victories...

  20. Aiyuk $27M FGTD next year but won't count against their cap if he's traded in March.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. What I have heard is that Aiyuk fell out of grace with the Niners. They dislike his contract; he won't play any more for the Niners. Niners will take just about anything for him just to get him off the books.

      Delete
    2. Correct razor. I've outlined this previously. The only way to get that off the books is to trade him before April 1.

Thing is, what team in their right mind would trade for a player they have to pay $27M to that is coming off such a devastating knee injury? I think the 49ers are going to be very hard pressed to find a taker without being willing to take on some of the $.

      Delete
    3. The Niners should be unhappy with his contract since he has produced almost nothing the past 1.5 years. However, they don’t have a choice but to try and get the most out of him for the remainder of his contract. He’s rich now and maybe unmotivated but he could also be hungry to get on the field and show he’s still one of the best. Hopefully they can get him on the field this year so he can start the process of getting into football shape. Time will tell.

  21. Matt Gay in his last 2 seasons with Colts and Commanders:

    44-of-56 from field goals
    55-of-55 from extra points

Context on the field goals is that all of his misses (except for 1) are from 50+.

    From 50+, he's been 7-of-18.

Should only be a couple of games until Eddie returns.

  22. T. J. Parker, Edge, Clemson is a player I'm sure they'd love to see still on the board when they pick in Round 1.

  24. Sam Hecht, Center, Kansas St., looks like a player the Niners should have interest in.

  25. Razor, which rd do you see Hecht being drafted?
I would like to see the 49ers give considerable thought on a Center whether thru the draft or FA next off season.
