Mason Traded To The Vikings

Per Ian Rappoport and Pelissero, it’s a 2026 6th and a pick swap this year for Mason.

  1. Noooooo.....heart-broken.

On the other hand, like clockwork, we can use our annual 3rd rounder on an RB that we don't need.

  2. Saw this one coming. Paying Mason for one year given their other moves made no sense, especially in a loaded RB draft class.

  3. The pick swap is 49ers receive a 5th rounder (160) for the 49ers 6th rounder (187).

49ers now have 4 picks in the top 100 and 8 picks in top 160.

  6. Rumors are swirling that the 49ers looking for a trade up partner in the 1st round. They are willing to package their 1st a 5th or 6th along with Aiyuk to move up. The 3 most likely trade partners, N.E., Jacksonville and the Raiders.

I'm having trouble understanding the logic of a "TRADE UP?"
    * With an abundance of both D and O lineman (the 9ers biggest needs), why trade up for one player, when they need so many?
    * While I understand the 9ers desire to move Aiyuk. I have to
assume the trade would be for the other team to assume his
contract...And the reason they can't just trade him?
    * I also question what appears to me, to be the 9er strategy of keeping CMC, and counting on him to be the player he was in
    2023.
    * CMC's age and injury history: https://www.draftsharks.com/fantasy/injury-history/christian-mccaffrey/7750

    1. Geep,
I wasn't advocating for the trade. I was just reacting to a couple of Youtube reports that the 49ers were actively looking into moving up. I agree with you that there are an abundance of D and O linemen in the draft this year. The only lineman that I believe stands out above over all the Others is A. Carter. I think a team of Bosa and Carter would create a devastating pass rush. Bosa, Carter along with Gross-Matos and Okuayinoniu give them a solid DE rotation, allowing them to focus the rest of their picks on DT and IOL. As to trading CMC I see that possibility as nearly impossible. His contract, age and injury history as well as this years draft being the deepest and most talented RB draft in the last 15 years tells me he will be on the 9ers roster next year.

      Delete
    2. GEEP, in addition to what Coach said I would also add that a trade up does make some sense if it doesn't cost much other than Aiyuk to do so.

As I've said before, imo the next few drafts are not just about adding a bunch of decent to good cost controlled players around their core. They also need to find their future core, which means they need to add 2-3 elite tier guys through the 24-26 drafts.

Easiest place to find those types of guys is in the top 5-10 picks.

      Delete
    3. OldCoach
yea, I have to agree with you on drafting DE Carter. The problem
is, what it would cost the 9ers in draft picks! Even if Aiyuk was
included, it would only add one player! As you point out, he'd create a devastating pass rush, but no draft picks left for defensive, or offensive tackles, a CB, LB
or IOL. After trading Mason, looks like the 9ers will need to
      draft a RB too.

      * "I would also add that a trade up does make some sense if it doesn't cost much other than Aiyuk to do so."

      * I agree with you. But the problem is, it would cost more than
Aiyuk to do so. And it would not leave the 9ers with the top draft picks to add 2-3 elite tier guys through the 24-26 drafts.
      * IMO, the 9ers including Aiyuk in the trade, like Deebo, Is an attempt to move a player off the books they have over-paid. He also comes with injury concerns and may not be available to start the 2025 season and like Deebo, he's not going to get
the 9ers a draft pick higher than a day 3 draft pick.
      * The draft boards I'm seeing, show Carter to be a Rd 1 top
three draft pick. So even If Carter a Rd #1, Draft pick #3, that
is 2200 point on the trade chart, minus the 1250 points for the
9ers draft pick #11. That leaves 950 points the 9ers would need to make up with additional draft picks for 2025.

    5. GEEP, I was just responding to Coach's post which indicated using Aiyuk and maybe one late day 3 pick to move up. If that's the trade to move up and increase the chances of landing a top tier talent, I can see the reasoning behind it.

Doesn't have to be for Carter per se.

      Delete
    6. Scooter
Yes, I understand. I was also responding to Coach's post about trading up for Carter and why I addressed using Aiyuk.
Two players that I would consider trading up for are TE Tyler Warren and OT Armand Membou.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It was a trade agreed upon by both parties. 49ers would only get the 2nd round pick if Mason signed with the Vikings as a FA.

Basically, nobody was going to sign Mason if they had to give a 2nd rounder. But 49ers didn't want to lose him for nothing. So they placed the 2nd round tender on him then worked out a trade with the Vikings.

  11. Not sure why any team might trade for BA given the injury from which there is a possibility he might not recover to his previous form. However, am I correct in saying that any acquiring team would not be on the hook for any signing bonus already paid?

    ReplyDelete

    1. The reasoning would be to acquire a very good WR on a 4 year deal without needing to give up much, but yes, it would come with risk.

The acquiring team would not be on the hook for the signing bonus.

They would take on the $110M he is to be paid over the next 4 years. Though that assumes he is traded before April 1.

      Delete
  12. Lol. Seeing some people mad at the Aiyuk contract following what Higgins got, and that Aiyuk got "more".

First, Higgins average per year is actually higher. Higgins got 4 yrs, $115M. Almost $29M per year.

On paper Aiyuk's 4 yr $120M extension looks like more, but people forget he had 1 yr left on his deal. It was actually a 5 yr deal worth around $135M. Average was $27M a year.

Second, Aiyuk was the 49ers leading WR. Higgins is a #2. And getting paid higher than the vast majority of #1s, including Aiyuk!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. @Scooter: is the reason that the last year of the previous contract is included in the calculation due to the signing bonus being paid that year? Does it have something to do with the start date of the new contract? Or……?

      Delete
    2. It's purely based on how many years the player is under contract for and for how much money. That is, their actual contract, rather than what the agents focus on which is just the "new money" and years added to the existing contract.

It is why a team that takes on Aiyuk now gets him for 4 years, same as Higgins, but for $110M - $5M less than Higgins. Which, aside from the injury concern, is what makes Aiyuk potentially attractive to teams - its not a bad contract to pick up.

  16. Well, this year's 49ers roster building strategy no longer feels like a coherent strategy whatsoever! In fact, it feels like the FO is either widely incompetent now, or purposely blowing this roster up and leaving a trail of ashes in it's wake for the foreseeable future! I was originally on board with these ruthless roster cuts because it felt like most of these players have underperformed relative to their contracts, but you can't just completely gut almost your ENTIRE DL without replacing any of these players, and expect to be competitive anytime soon.

At this point, after DRE GREENLAW'S contract details with Denver have come to light (the 49ers couldn't afford to offer DRE $12M guaranteed, yet they can afford to pay a blocking TE basically exactly that ... are you kidding me?) it's absolutely critical that JOHN, and KYLE, and maybe even PARAAG (and/or JED) hold a press conference, stand in front of reporters, and explain to the loyal fanbase why cutting cost was so essential this offseason, that they needed to risk forfeiting the entire 2025 and 2026 seasons in order to get costs under control, and that's assuming they absolutely ACE these next 2 drafts, otherwise it's GAME OVER, and back to irrelevance once again for what could be a long dead-end road to nowhere!

    1. Lol!

This is a very coherent strategy. You just don't like it. That's fine, it sucks when a team goes from being really good to needing to reload. But it also needed to happen. You just needed to look at the expected salary cap commitments of the 49ers over the next 3 years to see they were in for a significant cap crunch in the near future if they didn't take action now. Trying to run it back for one more year would have just meant a significantly worse roster deconstruction next year.

As for Greenlaw, they tried. Apparently they tried very hard. Greenlaw just made a decision to go to the Broncos. It happens.

    2. 100%........ and hopefully they'll move Aiyuk this time around- or he returns to form.

    3. Yeah, I don't really understand it either.
SF is not in a cap crunch they were 35 Million under before these moves, and next year they could clear another 35 at least by post June 1.
The only thing that makes sense is the owner is trying to hold onto Cash personally, as guaranteed money goes into escrow.
I would say firmly SF is trying to rebuild... but it makes no sense to bring back an old expensive fullback and not try to add some young quality depth pieces on either line. That said, I think they will add some bargain pieces that they can move off of early.
IMO its a non committed rebuild.

      Delete
    4. They were absolutely in a cap crunch Shoup. When I looked at their cap obligations in 26 and 27 at the end of last season I was surprised at how much was already committed on so few contracts. Looks healthier now of course.

They simply weren't in a position to bring in a bunch of additional high priced contracts to have another run at the title without putting themselves in a significant bind in 26 and 27.

I am a little surprised at how far they've taken it, but having a few vets like Juice still makes sense to help transition the team.

      Delete
    5. They currently have $42Mil in cap space... and next year are scheduled to have $65Mil (before the cap goes up.), in addition they could Cut Trent Williams post June 1 next year and add an Additional 25 Mil, cut or Move BA to add another 13Mil next year, Restructure Kittle for more room this year or Fred Warner or Nick Bosa for next year.
I wasnt speaking towards high priced contracts... in free agency I've always been more about meat and potatoes. ie get a solid DT that can fill a run stuffing role, a guard or center that could be a starter but doesn't have to be top of the market.
And Yes, I would rather have Dalman than Juice and Ferrell even at a higher price as He will likely double their combined snap count and help shore up a massive hole.

      Delete
    6. The reason they have a decent amount of cap space next year is because of the moves they've made.

Would Dalman have made them SB contenders this year?

      Delete
    7. I think we just disagree here.
For example, by releasing Floyd SF saved about 1.5 Mil... the problem is they still owe him 8.6Mil and they have to pay another player to fill his role. So I am not sure they will save money there. Moving Deebo, Expedited his cap hit and added another 15Mil to this years books
As to Dalman, there is not a single player you could add that could/would make SF a superbowl contender "this year". As SF is looking at a rebuild, adding a young ascending player that could help for years to come would kind of make sense, not to mention it would help moving forward with your young qb.
The big issue right now is that they still have to add viable NFL bodies and given the state of their Dline I really believe they are pigeon holing themselves in the NFL draft.

      Delete
    8. I think the Front Office just misjudged Greenlaw's market value. It must have pissed off Greenlaw when we gave the contract to Luke Farrell and were lowballing him.

In my mind, Greenlaw is a man of principles. Integrity is important for him.

I would say this is a solid L for us.

      Delete
    9. Shoup, they saved $8M releasing Floyd. Just not against this year's cap. Same with Deebo, they saved $16M. Just not on this years cap. They'll replace them with a cheaper option that will be cheap for a few years.

It's the same situation with most of the guys they cut, and with the guys they let go.

As for Dalman, or any other high priced FA, they could either sign them now but not really be in a position to push for a SB right away, or keep that cap space available in future years to make a splash in FA when it actually will move the needle. In the meantime, see if they can find those positions through the draft.

      Delete
    10. Scooter,
Per CBS, "San Francisco signed Floyd, 32, to a two-year, $20 million contract with $12 million guaranteed last offseason, but the 49ers opted to move on from him with no guaranteed money on the deal in 2025. His release saved the 49ers a meager $1.476 million in cap room."
With Deebo from what I have seen the cap cost is relatively the same as a post June 1, the difference being SF takes the entire hit this year.
What am I missing that you are seeing? Does CBS have Floyds contract wrong?
From what I have seen the biggest issue SF has going forward are the CMC and Williams contract and those are still being delt with.

Kind of late to draft a LB. You must have a lot of confidence in Winters. Who do you see them starting a the third LB spot?

      Delete
    2. OldCoach
I do believe Winters has improved to the point he is a starter. does that mean I believe he'll replace Greenlaw? NO! But he is similar to Greenlaw, meaning Winters is violent and extremely fast. He ran a 4.49s at the NFL Scouting Combine and he also embodies the "all gas, no brake" mentality Robert Saleh wants to instill in the defense.
Last season, Winters had to take a back seat to De'Vondre Campbell for most of the season even though Winters was IMO, better than Campbell. Winters played just 398 defensive snaps last season and he played behind an poor defensive line that couldn't stop the run, so he kept having to take on blocks from offensive linemen who are twice his size.
Now, the 49ers are revamping their defensive line. They've released Javon Hargrave, Maliek Collins and Leonard Floyd -- three pass rushers who struggle to stop the run and should replace them with better run defenders. Guys who can tie up the offensive linemen and keep Winters clean so he can do what he does best -- run and hit. So to answer your question, I do expect Winters to have a good season.
I expect Graham and Bethune will compete for WLB back-up.
NOTE: I expect most of the day 3 draft picks will compete for
ST to begin the season. And like 2024 draft picks, some will

REALLY? You're going to insult my intelligence? I expect

Noel: "Routes have purpose and deception at every phase – uses eyes, shoulders and pacing to manipulate coverage and create windows that weren't there."
Restrepo: "Manipulates defensive backs with advanced route-running nuance, particularly excelling at tempo changes that leave defenders flat-footed in man coverage."
      Little difference between the two.
Both are 5' 10", both are primarily slot receivers. Restepro is 15 pounds heavier and Noel is 0.06s faster, but drops the ball. Restepro had 69 rec for 1127 yds. Noel had 80 rec for 1194 yards.

You once told me, you could read the scouting reports.

Noel's Frame limitations show up in contested situations –
Restepro extra 15 pounds means he likely out weighs the

    7. GEEP, wasn't intended to be an insult. You likened fumbles to drops. I was merely pointing out they aren't the same level of impact, I thought with some humour, but clearly not!

As for the scouting reports, they're cool. Yes, I read them. No, I don't use them as the gospel truth.

I much prefer to watch these guys play and form my own opinions. I'm not a scout, don't pretend to be, but do like to use my own judgement, however misinformed it may be. The scouting reports I then use to either confirm what I am seeing or make me go back and check to see what I missed.

For mine Noel is superior player to Restrepo. His route stems are excellent and he gets DBs in a panic very quickly. Restrepo is a very nuanced route runner as well, but it much more about generating horizontal separation. Noel does both vertical and horizontal.

This could be taken a couple of ways. Is he referring to the overall talent of the team, or going 6-11?

Same with about avoiding this predicament again - as in needing to shed a bunch of contracts, or having a losing season?

My belief is he's referring to losing seasons, and maybe the full interview clarifies, but this is pretty ambiguous on its own.

    2. Scooter,
You bring up a couple of good scenarios. My personal interpretation is that he is speaking on both.
      1. Since being with the 49ers he has not been a part of a losing season until last year.
      2. There is a need to establish team chemistry which might have been a little disrupted with the loss of many injured players.

With drafted and FA players coming in this season, learning to feed off each other becomes the key to success.

  28. 4.47 40 for Oregon CB Jabbar Muhammad at the Ducks’ pro day this afternoon, a source said.

Dynamic cover man allowed just a 46.8 completion % (62 targets against) this fall and finished his collegiate career with more INTs (4) than TDs allowed (3) in 263 targets against over five seasons. His 22 PBUs are the second most in CFB over the last two seasons.

  34. SHOULD THE 9ERS BE INTERESTED IN C GARRETT BRADBURY?

Vikings signed Indianapolis Colts center Ryan Kelly to a 2 year deal in free agency, leaving them in a tough position with Bradbury.
The Athletic’s Dianna Russini revealed the Vikings plan to release Bradbury, who should have interest on the open market.
IMO, 29 Y/O Bradbury would be an upgrade over C Jake Brendel, a position upgrade the 9ers have needed to make for some time.
The 9er coaching staff were fans of Bradbury in the draft, believing him to be a good fit in a KS offense.

  36. This is a 2yr reset. This upcoming draft along with next year's draft will need to provide at least 4 hits in order to strengthen and push the team forward for the next 4-5 years. If these next two draft years can provide future All-Pro players the 49ers will be SB contenders thru the latter part of this decade.

Something that hasn't been discussed for his roll in drafting 9er plays is Adam Peters. Now that he's the GM, at Washington, we can see how effective he's been at improving their roster and it raises the question, how much influence did he have in the players the 9ers drafted....And will he be missed?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think that Adams had a somewhat smooth ride with the 49ers in that he rarely found the team drafting in survival mode. The 49ers aren't drafting in survival mode this year either because there is still very good group of core players here. But if the team are to stay relevant for the next 5 - 6+ years, the next couple of drafts have to produce future stars.

      Delete
    2. He'll definitely be missed imo. Good talent evaluators will always be missed.

But I also think the 49ers still have a bunch of good talent evaluators, and end of the day Peters wasn't the one making the final decisions.

    11. Jalon Walker
    48. Darius Alexander
    75. Jaylin Noel
    98. CJ West
    100. Femi Oladejo
    113. Jeffrey Bassa

    160. Chase Lundt

  41. Mike Garafolo is reporting that BP and his agent are digging their heels in for Dak Prescott money . It looks like things are going to get ugly. Negotiations could last into the season. Does BP have any idea that if he forces the 9ers to pay Prescott money he could close their SB window for 5 years. Should the 49ers give in to BP or hardball negotiate?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think BP's agent should be fired immediately if Prescott money isn't their starting position.

Question is, how much are they willing to negotiate below that?

I previously wrote an article about paying Purdy where I used an example of a 5 year extension paying $280M in new money ($56M per year), which I still think is around where it will end up.

    2. Oldcoach
As repugnant as it is, BP and his agent can want in one hand and $#(t in the other, he's NOT going to get Prescott money!
      * JL made it clear that the 49ers are moving away from being a high-spending team and are focusing on building a roster through the draft and COST CUTTING MEASURES.
      * He's also made it clear the 9ers intend to keep BP, who can
accept an extension for less, or play his 5th year for $5.3Mil
and then use the franchise tax for 2026, for ~$40 Mil to $45
      Mil.
      * Also, I suspect the 9ers FO signed Mac Jones for $7 million for 2 years, with $5 million guaranteed. While I don't believe
Jones to be a threat to take BP's job, he is capable of starting
should BP set out the season.

      Delete
    3. GEEP,
I believe that BP will hold out well into the season if the 49ers try to force him to play under his rookie contract. I think he can sit out 8 weeks and then report to get the season counted against his rookie contract. That would basically guarantee a losing season. If that were to happen I could see a situation where they couldn't sign another A level FA for about 10 years. Also I think BP would demand a trade before the 26 season if they franchised him.

    4. OldCoach
I don't doubt, or disagree, with what you're saying. BUT, I don't believe JL, KS or the 9er FO have a choice! I believe the Yorks have made a decision and left no choice in the matter.
My guess is they will offer BP $45Mil +/- $3 mil. + incentives for another $5 - $10 Mil and leave BP to decide what he wants to do, accept on sit out. And you also may be right with respect to the 9ers signing another A level FA? TBD!
I just hope it doesn't turn into a shit show.

It's a team game, if one person garners most of the money then there is little left to attract talent. I thought BP understood that and I thought he might already be signed. I am a Niner fan first and foremost. Like you and AES, we have seen 1000's of players come and go but there is only a handful that are truly Niner players. So to your question, hopefully the contract is team friendly and at the same time put lots of cash into BP's pockets for a long time, like I said I am a Niner fan I want what is best for the team.

      Delete
    6. UC,
I agree. I'm just not sure which of the more likely scenarios is best for the team. #1 give in to BP and over pay him. #2 play hardball with BP and his agent and have BP hold out. Of course the 2 sides coming to a happy medium is what we all would like to see, that hasn't happened in their last 4 or 5 negotiations. The QB issue is not a 49ers problem it is an NFL problem. I believe that is why i'm hearing more discussion of a separate QB cap. That will only occur when the rest of the players realize that over paying for one position is limiting what the bottom half of rosters are making.

      Delete
    7. I think the separate QB cap is a non-starter. After 5 years, once everyone is used to it and contracts have settled, the only outcome of a separate QB cap is that it would discourage taking advantage of rookie QB contracts and place far more emphasis on overpaying mediocre veterans.

  44. While I know most of the talk when it comes to 49ers draft trades are focused on potential moves back for more picks, I actually wouldn't be surprised if they try and move back into the back end of round 1 for a DL to get them on with a 5th year option.

Could even look at a small trade back from 11, then move up from 43, to retain quantity of picks.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I don't think we use that 5th year option as much as other teams and therefore may not value it as much.

    2. Just because it isn't played under doesn't mean it isn't used. They were able to wait 4 years instead of 3 before negotiating new contracts for Bosa and Aiyuk. They also did have McGlinchey play on it.

They have also valued it in the past.

  47. AES
I expect Nolen to be drafted in the late 1st. to early 2nd Rd. and where I'm seeing most draft boards projecting him to be drafted.
The scouting report on Nolan & what you see on film, is he's strong against the run, but not the most polished DT. That he may be the most physically gifted, but he'll needs NFL coaching to continues to improve his pre-snap plan and hand usage, opposed to relying on his strength in run defense.
But it only takes one team to see him as a top 10 draft pick, so who
    knows, you may be right?

  48. GEEP/Scooter
You both make valid points. Nolen would need some good coaching and work on resetting his character. But, other potential draft starters like Green and Pearse have dropped as well. I think that these young players can salvage their futures and money earnings if drafted by the right team. The 49ers have a good culture with professional and mature players. The only question is will that be enough to help character challenged young players?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The age old question of whether character matters.

Hard to say for me. Given they are doing a reset, which needs to have a bunch of hits that includes bringing in the next crop of stars and leaders, I'd be a little more inclined to go with high character guys.

      Delete
  49. I would as well, Scooter. But, when the talent is greater than the character issue, most teams will take go with talent. Mike Green is a player that I wouldn't touch on day one. But I might a little interested in him on day three. I would take a risk on day3. Nolan would be more attractive to me as a late 1st rd pick where Razor has him in a trade scenario. High end talent is hard to pass up.
