Injury Bug Bites

49ers WR De'Zhaun Stribling out at least a month with a deltoid sprain in his ankle. Never heard of the injury but sounds like it could've been much worse. Heal fast!

  1. NFC West news: Myles Garrett will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his knee and will go on IR, per Pelissero. Looks like Trent roughed him up too much!

  2. I had a deltoid sprain (didn't know thats what it is called until now) about 40 years ago. A deltoid sprain is when you roll your ankle to the inside. I was in great shape at the time playing around 20 hours of basketball a week. It took me 2 months to get back out on the court. I think what I had was a pretty severe sprain hopefully Stribling's sprain is less severe.

    1. Makes Deebo signing more significant- D Rob and Cowings will help- nice to finally have depth at WR- and maybe Kirk comes back at some point. Rams can possibly get off to a poor start..... and Black looked great- love how he hits the LOS - just a matter of time to see him explode for some long gains.

    2. The deltoid ligament is actually a complex made up of the following structures:

      Tibionavicular
      Tibiospring
      Tibiocalcaneal
      Superficial posterior tibiotalar
      Deep anterior tibiotalar
      Deep posterior tibiotalar (strongest)

These are rare injuries but they do happen and they take a while to return.

      Grade 1: 1-2 games

      Grade 2: 3-6 games

      Grade 3: season-ending

Based on the wording, this could be closer to a grade 2 than a grade one. That would mean that the 49ers might consider putting him on IR, which would knock him out for at least four weeks.

  3. I feel for Stribling. He had to be very excited to play as rookie. But he will be back soon. Evans, Deebo, and D. Robinson have already shown that they are going to be strong contributor's. Watkins, Cowing, and Hodge are ready if called upon as well.
Grimes and Pauling are on the PS. The WR position is not lacking this year.

    1. Watson might get an activation. My advice is to seize your opportunity young man because you're not going to get many more!

  4. Heck, I totally forgot about Kirk.

    1. Kirk is a nice card to have in Shanahan's back pocket.

  5. That's rough. If Stribling has surgery, it will effectively end his rookie year. Hopefully, rest is all he needs to recuperate.

  6. Evidently Stribling is getting a second opinion for his injury.
9ers players may have doubts in their medical staff after Pearsall

  7. The Harbaugh era is coming to its predictive end.

  8. It's a little to early for a Harbaugh experation prediction. But with a top QB and very good team, there's no doubt that the Chargers FO will not be happy if they fail to make a strong push in the playoffs.

    1. I've always said Harbaugh is a college coach. You can only get by on motivation for so long in the NFL before players get tired of the schtick. He's always had about a 3-year shelf life wherever he's gone.

      Delete
  9. You are right about his shelf life. But, the guy has a Superbowl apparence and a Natty which solidifies his lagecy.

  10. He's one of the most overrated HC's employed in the NFL right now.

Niners open up as 12.5-point favorites against the Dolphins in Week 2.

    1. "He's one of the most overrated HC's employed in the NFL right now."
That's debatable. The 49ers were a horrible team before he arrived. And were a dumpster fire team after he left.

    2. Harbaugh is great at teaching teams that don't know how to win how to win. The 49ers were loaded when he arrived. By the time it was over you had Boone complaining about Harbaugh's idioms saying, "we already climbed that mountain" in reference to the SB.

Harbaugh brought his team into that SB tighter than a lid on a pickle jar. It was a blowout until the cord was pulled. Then when he could have won the game by running Gore down on the goal line against an old and worn-down Ravens defense, he throws fade routes with a qb that couldn't throw one to save his life!

What exactly has Harbaugh done in the NFL without Fangio?

    3. I'm not trying to protect Harbaugh. I just don't agree that he's one of the most overrated head coaches in the NFL. I happen to look at Harbaugh with a slightly different perspective than yours. Shanahan has lost two Superbowls, and Harbaugh lost one, but was one Kyle Williams fumble from going to a SB which could have made two. Again, I view Harbaugh with a different perspective.

      Delete
    4. That's fine. But in my eyes, Harbaugh wouldn't make a pimple on Shanahan's ass.

    5. I agree with you regards Harhaugh. Undoubtedly he’s a great college coach but I think he’s proven himself as an NFL coach with the Niners. Yes, he has a physically gifted QB but who has never lived up to his billing so maybe he’s not as good as projected.
It was a disappointing loss to be sure but so was the Rams loss and it’s just one game.

    6. Be honest AES, does Jim Harbaugh beat Vic Fangio in the playoffs with:

      Jennings- 6’3 212 (4.8)

      D-Rob- 6’1 202 (4.59)

      Bourne- 6’1 205 (4.68)

      TE Jake Tonges?

  11. Hahaha. I think you are forgetting that wasn't all on the offense. The D couldn't stop the Raven and kept getting toasted by Anquan Bolden. The Ravens weren't playing in the dark when the lights came back on, but the 49ers offense made them look like they were. Even with a QB that couldn't throw one to save his life. They still had a chance to win the game in the last few minutes of the game.

    1. Again, what has Harbaugh done in the NFL without Fangio? I'll wait....

    2. Fangio wins SB as DCord in Philly. Other than that, it could easily be said what has Fangio done without Jim Harbaugh. But, if you want to talk about overrated head coaches, how did Fangio do as head coach in Denver? No need to answer, we both know.

      Delete
    3. Or what could he have accomplished with a decent GM. It always helps to have good coaches but the Niners sucked before he arrived and again after he left. In between he was 49-22. Not many coaches accomplish that.

      Delete
    4. Fangio WAS the reason the Eagle won a SB.

      Delete
    5. Maybe Fangio still loves the 49ers and intentionally allowed them to beat Philly last year in the Wild Card game. Again, Fangio is also overrated and his only hope for success is to remain a DCord. I very much doubt that the Eagles will win another SB soon.

    6. Fangio’s Eagles defense in 2024 (Super Bowl LIX year) was a historic turnaround:

1st in yards allowed and 1st in points allowed

      2nd in pass defense

      1st in first downs allowed

      3rd on third down

      5th in red zone defense

This marked the greatest defensive improvement in NFL history, going from 26th in yards allowed and 30th in points allowed the previous year to the top two in both categories.

Vic Fangio is regarded as one of the best DC's in the National Football League.

Do you recall Fangio's defense ranking in 2012? #2 in scoring Defense, #3 in Total Defense, #4 against the Run and Pass, #2 in Yards per Play, Top 5 in Redzone, #6 in Turnovers

      Delete
    7. I recall his stints with the Panthers, Colts, Texans, 49ers, Bears, Dolphins, and the Eagles. That tells me that if you hang around the game long enough, there's a chance you could win a SB at some point.

      Delete
    8. For all your SB or bust talk you seem quite dismissive of Fangio's, while giving Harbaugh a pass.

      Delete
    9. My expectations for the 49ers are perennially high.
And I stand by my comments that Harbaugh is not overrated. In his 4 yrs as the 49ers head coach, Harbaugh never won a SB. Shanahan is entering his 10th yr without a SB win. Sometimes the math can be deceptive.

      Delete
    10. The math ain't mathing for Harbaugh bud!

      Delete
    11. Well, one SB loss in 4 yrs vs 2 SB losses in 9 yrs is my math.

      Delete
    12. Harbaugh got kicked out of the league and we were comparing Harbaugh to Fangio. If you insist on comparing Harbaugh to Shanahan, right off the bat your math is wrong. Which one's system is spread across the league like Covid? You want to run the numbers? Shanahan’s playoff winning percentage (.643) ranks ninth in NFL history (minimum 10 games). In Shanahan’s first nine seasons, the 49ers won two NFC titles, three NFC West crowns, made five playoff appearances and had four 12-win seasons. Harbaugh's playoff record is 5-5 and all 5 wins were with Vic Fangio as his DC. I'm really surprised AES that you believe Harbaugh is so good when the math ain't mathing!

      Delete
    13. It's quite simple for me. In my math there's a big gap between being a good head coach vs a SB winning head coach. Both Shanahan and Harbaugh have yet to reach that "next level" plateau. I will be ecstatic when Shanahan finally hoist the Lombardi Trophy. If he fails to do this he will only join the ranks of Marv Levy, Bud Grant, Marty Shottenheimer, Dan Reeves, and Don "Air" Coryell. Great head coaches, zero SB wins.

  12. Brock Purdy has never lost a week 1 game in his NFL career so far 😮‍💨

  13. The Chargers are a cautionary tale. You can throw asset after asset at the OL and still suck ass if you don't have a quality OL coach.
