Shanny and Mr. Jones

Mac Jones has agreed to terms with the #49ers on a 2-year deal for $7M with 5M guaranteed. Max value of $11.5M. A new, experienced backup for Brock Purdy.

  1. He might be the perfect fit for the backup job.

  2. What is this .... some kind of sick joke? Kyle has officially lost his mind! Jacksonville couldn't get rid of this backup fast enough.

    1. This is yet more proof, as if we even needed more, that Kyle Shanahan may be a good X's & O's HC, but he's about the worst talent evaluator in the business, bar none! What's next, signing an overweight Joe Williams (RB) off the unemployment line? How embarrassing!

  4. Mac Jones’ career passer rating (84.9) ranks 26th among the 28 QBs who have at least 1,000 pass attempts since 2021. Brock Purdy’s rating (104.9) is first.

    1. Grant Cohn says that Jones may be as good as BP. He added that the 49ers should low ball BP, force him out of the job and start Jones. One thing Grant is always good for is one hell of a belly laugh. I only wonder who the idiots who take him seriously are?

    2. I think he'll be a lot better in Shanahan's system, but yeah, he is no Brock Purdy!

    3. Jones was a 1st rd draft pick in a weak QB draft year. I liked his early start with the Pats, but he's been a fringe backup QB since. I really liked him in college, but then again I touted for Trey Lance as well. I'm cautiously excited on his signing and wish him well.

  5. At the UB Football Pro Day, All-American Shaun Dolac ran an unofficial 4.55 in the 40-yard dash. That would be the 6th fastest linebacker at the combine. The nation’s leader in tackles racked up 25 bench reps which would be the 3rd highest. Dolac is one of 5 LB prospects since 2015 with 5+ INTs, 5+ sacks, and 20+ pass rush wins in their college career.

  6. Razor,
You found another sleeper! Dolac's film looks very nice. What rd do you see him being drafted?

    1. Agreed. Low cost guys for now and they can also sign anyone that was cut with no impact to comp formula.

  11. This off season for the 49ers is taking on the look of a serious tore-down and almost starting from scratch. 8 wins could be about right for me. 10 wins would be great. 12 wins would make me ecstatic and give me a 2-3 window of hope at another SB run.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Definitely not starting from scratch. The core of elite talent plus their QB is actually largely in tact. But they have stripped away a lot of the older supporting cast.

      Delete
    2. I hear you. But core guys like CMC and Aiyuk will need to prove that they can perform at a high level and Trent is not Benjamin Button. Purdy, Kittle, and Warner are not on the mend so they can be counted on. Once the new season begins everything falls into alignment one way or another.

  12. With Pepper being released and replaced by a more expensive option, makes me wonder (a) if the sideline confrontation with Deebo was seen in a very poor light by the coaching staff/ FO and (b) whether they feel his snaps may have contributed to issues with Moody's kicking.

    3. I'd love to trade down and get an extra day 2 pick.

His character issues are not the kind to dismiss him. Likely his interview combined with talking to coaches, players, etc. determine his fate.

  15. Razor,
Nolen is looking more and more like he could be available at 11. If Mike Green's off-field issue drops him to 43, should the 49ers pounce?

  18. Jones is a meh signing for me.
He could fill in if Brock goes down and play well enough to win a game or to against lesser teams, but he is not competition for Brock.
He is a guy that if he plays well in a game or 2 if Brock goes down... maybe you get a draft pick for him next year or sign to be a longer term backup.
I wouldn't think too much about it.

  21. If the Niners do not go after Membou, then without a doubt it will be a defensive lineman at 11. Whether it's a defensive tackle or edge makes no difference to me as I would think that with the second pick would be used on the position that wasn't picked. After two rounds still going to need another DT and LG. Williams is not getting younger so grooming a LT has to be somewhat of a thought. With all that being said a center with smarts and some nasty needs to be addressed. Not to mention WR, RB, and LB.

That's a lot to ask for, can this draft produce that?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I'd consider it a win if they hit on 4 players that proved to be part of the future core.

      Delete
    2. 100%. Getting 4 core players in one draft would be an excellent draft. Better than 2019 (Bosa, Deebo, Greenlaw). Add some role players/ contributors and it would be one of their best drafts ever.

What I think they need is to add at least 2-3 top tier players over the next 2 drafts, plus 4-5 solid starters and some decent role players. Add that to the guys they hope will be starters and role players over the next 3 years (and hopefully longer for some) from the 2024 draft, and you've done a really good job refreshing the roster.

  22. There are 18 players in the NFC West whose contracts call for them to make $15 million+ per season.

The 49ers have seven of those players.

The Rams and Cardinals are next with four apiece. Seahawks have three.

  23. "I really thank Brock a ton, Brock Purdy, for just his style of playing," Darnold told reporters. "And how he kind of described his style was like, 'We've got a ton of great playmakers on offense. My job is just to play point guard, and get the ball in their hands, and let them go do great things with the rock.'

"And when I started to change my thought process as a quarterback to kind of just getting the ball in my guys' hands, then that really kind of [is] where it unlocked for me a little bit."

An expensive one, which is awesome- his #'s over the second half were pretty rough....... and those legs probably aren't scaring any of the young DB's- jam him at the line.......... 49ers should pressure all 3 this year as Stafford as old and can't maneuver well, Kyler - it helps w containment and Darnold isn't as effective.

  27. Matt Barrows said the 49ers are doing the exact same thing the Rams did after the 2023 season. Like the 49ers they made the SB and the next season won 5 games. The Rams GM called it rebuilding on the fly. Barrows said if you look at what the Rams did and the 49ers are doing it is as if the 9ers are following the same exact game plan. Now they have to draft as well as the Rams did.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think Barrows (or you) meant the 2022 season? Won in 2021, bad year 2022 where they had and old roster and tried to run it back. Cleared out the old guys after that year and bounced back in 23 and 24 with strong drafts.

Yeah, very similar situation here. Main difference is the 49ers are one year ahead on drafting to where the Rams were, having a pretty good draft class last year.

      Delete
    2. Yeah I got those years mixed up and I was thinking the same thing about being one year ahead of the Rams rebuild. What worries me is i'm not sure JL can put together 2 very good to great drafts little own 3.

      Delete
    3. That's definitely going to be the telling factor - this only works if they draft well consistently.

    4. It feels like the Niners have adjusted their team building approach, and we saw a change in draft strategy last year, which seems to have paid off. If last year was any indication, the 49ers are clearly putting more weight in ATHLETICISM as a defining quality (and particularly short area quickness, lateral agility, twitch & burst, as well strength and explosive athleticism) and point of emphasis within their draft formula, and even free agency, and I like it.

Look for the Niners to continue the trend in what is shaping up to be an essential draft next month! They have more roster holes than at any time since 2017 and 2018, and however they do it, that have to find prospects who both fill critical needs, especially within the trenches. DT, DE, and IOL are all major major areas of need for this team, which is going to make it hard for them to keep teams guessing during the draft.

I'm still working on my full mock, but they have to find immediate contributors, which means they will likely need to find these players early in the draft.

My favorite prospects, not rated per say, but in terms of potential upgrades, FIT, and in order at positions of need (keep in mind some players are listed at OT who I think can move inside and dominate at IOL at the next level):

DT: MASON GRAHAM, who is unlikely to fall to them at 11, but not out of the realm of possibility

Other DT's: WALTER NOLEN, DERRICK HARMON, OMAR NORMAN-LOTT, KENNETH GRANT,CJ WEST and TY ROBINSON

DE: ABDUL CARTER, who won't be around at 11

Other DE's: MYKEL WILLIAMS, LANDON JACKSON, SHEMAR STEWART, SAI'VION JONES

DE/DT: NICK SCOURTON, DARIUS ALEXANDER, JORDAN BURCH

IOL/OC: ARMAND MEMBOU (OG), WILL CAMPBELL (OG),TYLER BOOKER (OG), JONAH SAVAIINAEA (OG), EMER JONES JR (OG), GREY ZABEL (OG/OC), JARED WILSON (OG/OC), COOPER MAYS (OC)

OT: ARMAND MEMBOU (OT/OG), KELVIN BANKS, JOSH CONNERLY, AIREONTAE ERSERY, MARCUS MBOW, CAMERON WILLIAMS

    5. Interesting. That wasn't my takeaway from the 2024 draft. They've always prioritised athleticism, in particular short area quickness and explosiveness. Sometimes to their detriment.

For mine the takeaway from last year is they put more emphasis on college production than usual. A lot of guys with multiple years of good starting experience and production. Guerendo the obvious (and only) outlier.

    1. Pretty sure it's all about the cap, Coach. This move removed pushing his cap hits into future years while decreasing how much they are paying him for this year. Plus getting him for an extra year.

My guess is they asked him to take a pay cut, he refused, but then he didn't find a better offer elsewhere so accepted the 49ers deal.
