Potentially inexpensive FA trench additions going through PFF’s rankings:
ReplyDelete🏈 OL Mekhi Becton (3 yr, $9m avg)
🏈 DI Levi Onwuzurike (2 yrs, $8.25m avg)
🏈 ED Baron Browning (1 yr, $6m)
🏈 ED Azeez Ojulari (1 yr, $5m)
🏈 DI Poona Ford (1 yr, 3m)
🏈 DI Teair Tart (1 yr, $2.5m)
Razor,
DeleteI'm really high on Ford. What does PFF say about Jeremiah Ledbetter? What would you think of resigning Solomon Thomas as a rotational piece at DE?
Ledbetter 1 yr, $1.85 million
DeleteThomas - wouldn't hurt to bring him in
Nice to see Green at 250+ (barely). Princely has nice measureables for us... I still haven't dug into his tape that much but I have heard good things.
ReplyDeleteMembou has shorter arms than I expected tbh.
Arroyo has some really nice tape but his injury history gives you pause.
Becton is out as an FA. He doesnt have the necessary mobility imo
Ford would be a nice add as would Azeez but you must expect him to be a pass rusher ala Dee Ford imo.
Princely is off my board for bad character.
Delete34" arms for Membou are long enough to stick at OT.
DeleteAbsolutely Scooter,
DeleteThey are long enough but I kept hearing how long his arms were (as he is a bit shorter) but then they turn out to be basically average for the position. Which is fine but I was thinking they would be longer.
“There’s not a lot of people who have the skillset to play tackle, so it reduces the pool,” 49ers director of player personnel Tariq Ahmad said after the 2024 draft. “We are very selective of those guys.”
DeleteRazor,
DeleteWhat are his character issues you dont like? I did a quick search but didn't find any major flags.
The report did not elaborate any further regarding the "bad character".
DeleteSo he will end up with the Eagles or Cheifs I guess.
DeleteCorrect.

The 49ers have hired Brant Boyer as their special teams coordinator
Robert Longerbeam is making waves at the @ShrineBowl. 49ers current assistant DB coach Andrew Hayes-Stroker is coaching the DBs.
ReplyDeleteGood to see Green hit 250lbs. That should lock him in as a top 20 pick.
ReplyDeleteI still highly doubt he played at that weight last season though. Kennard looks bigger on film.
Walter Nolen | Nnamdi Madubuike
ReplyDeleteHeight: 75.25” | 75”
Weight: 293 | 293
Arm: 33” | 33.5”
Hand: 9.25” | 9”
Pass rush production: 83.3 | 84.3
Run defense production: 83 | 79.7
Just did a mock using NFL Mock Draft Database. Made one trade, moving back from 11 to 13 to add pick 150 (Dolphins).
ReplyDelete13. Walter Nolen, DT.
43. Azareye'h Thomas, CB
75. Quinshon Judkins, RB
99. Andrew Mukuba, S
111. Ashton Gillotte, DE
137. Chris Paul Jr, LB
138. Charles Grant, OG
150. Luke Lachey, TE
188. Simeon Barrow Jr, DT
227. Ozzy Trapilo, OT
231. Dont'e Thornton, WR
254. Upton Stout, CB
I think some of those guys are undervalued by that database.
I'd be ecstatic with that haul.
DeleteIt would certainly infuse the D with some young talent. Key decision process for mine was taking guys that play with their hair on fire.
DeleteI really like the razor pick. Ashton Gillotte.
DeleteYeah, he's underrated imo. Really active, high motor guy with impressive power.
DeleteSenior Bowl exec. director Jim Nagy:
ReplyDelete"I’m talking to teams that have just eight or nine first-round grades on players."
Just so typical that the year the 49ers are awful and get a highish draft pick coincides with a year where the top end talent is very low.
DeleteIt's why I'm not a fan of moving down. Let's say these are the top 8:
DeleteCam Ward, QB, Miami (FL)
Abdul Carter, EDGE, Penn State
Travis Hunter, CB/WR, Colorado
Mason Graham, DL, Michigan
Jalon Walker, EDGE, Georgia
Mykel Williams, EDGE, Georgia
Kelvin Banks Jr., OT, Texas
Walter Nolen, DL, Ole Miss
Unless a stud falls it makes the trade back scenario less likely... And I really would like a few more bites of the apple in the top 100
DeleteSo the 49ers hire Brant Boyer as their new S.T. coordinator, his record with the Jets has been nothing short of spectacular. Then again both Richard Hightower and Brian Schneider's reputations were both very strong when they came to the 49ers and they both failed under KS. Hopefully KS will be a little more supportive of special teams with Boyer or in 3-5 years we will be looking for another ST coordinator and fans will be blaming Boyer.
ReplyDeleteHopefully Shanahan will now be able to focus like a laser on offense and not have to worry about defense or special teams.
DeleteRazor,
DeleteIf he wanted that he should have stayed an OC. He is a HC and is responsible for the whole team. As Harry Truman said "The buck stops here"
For me, I want him not to have to micro manage the defense and special teams like he's had to do for the past 2 years. You remember the Ronco? Set it and forget it.
DeleteOld Coach, Irvin Charles is an ERFA this offseason. Jets Gunner. Wonder if the Jets will let him go with new coaching staff coming in?
DeleteJustin Hardee might be another one to keep an eye on. Was with the Titans last season, but prior to that was a STs captain and gunner with the Jets for a few years.
DeleteI think the issue is that Kyle doesn't care about special teams and that attitude permiates through the team. So no matter who he brings in, I wouldnt expect much from the unit as the culture doesnt care about it.
DeleteOddly enough, he should care about it, because the way he calls games maximizes the special teams impact.
Shoup - I agree. Comes down to the attitude.
DeleteI read a stat somewhere that during the 7 years of Shanalynch there have been 11 fake punts converted against us versus 0 that we attempted.
For crying out loud, at least do 1 fake punt in the 1st or 2nd game of the season, just so opposing coaches have some tape to prepare for!
Shoup, that is my belief too. It's not so much about the resources they commit to it - historically they have been willing to add the resources - but more about the general attitude towards STs which is one of "just don't be garbage".
DeleteUntil Shanahan gets the players believing it's a priority the results probably won't change dramatically.
I have a hard time buying into that theory. The special teams coach and the players all have careers to look after and they are professionals who make a lot of money. They shouldn’t need much motivation beyond their own self interest. I think it’s off base to blame Shanahan. It makes no sense to me.
DeleteThe players are professionals who make a lot of money to do more than just play STs.
DeleteI don't think it's a case of these guys not caring, but when you have to learn both STs and your position, and the HC seems to put more emphasis on being good on offense and defense, what are you going to spend most of your effort on?
Exactly Scooter,
DeleteIf the attitude is "just don't lose the game" it will permeate through the team and it wont matter that you spent a lot of money on it or not. Yes, some players will be motivated to always play their best and some will have to have that attitude as Special teams is what keeps them in the league.
The problem is that a lot of them will focus on the area that their coach openly cares about most and their effort and focus will lag in special teams. Over the course of a season that carry over will cost you on several plays One guy will lose lane integrity, one guy will lose focus when going over how the opponent likes try and block kicks, will block incorrectly and leave an untouched rusher.
It stops being a question of if your special teams can win or break even and becomes of a question of if you can avoid losing the game there.
Azareye’h Thomas Measurements
ReplyDeletePercentiles among NFL Combine Corners
Height: 6’1.50” (89th %ile)
Weight: 191 (43rd %ile)
Hand: 10.13” (97th %ile)
Arm: 32.50” (85th %ile)
Wing: 77.25” (77th %ile)
Could sneak into round 1.
49ers would no doubt have gotten a good look and insight on him while scouting Renardo Green. After Johnson and Hunter, he's my next CB.
DeleteThoughts on Darien Porter, CB, Iowa St?
DeleteHaven't gotten to him yet. Your thoughts?
DeleteRe Thomas, Todd McShay reckons he was easily the best skill position player on the field day 1. Man amongst boys. Thinks he's a lock for top 25.
DeleteVery talented. Think his best fit is in zone due to his high hips and height. Top 25 is ambitious given he's only had one year of fulltime production on defense.
DeleteWashington LB Carson Bruener confirms that he has met with the 49ers at the Shrine Bowl.
ReplyDeleteWe know that Lynch and co value bloodlines.
DeleteMiami’s kicker Andres Borregales met with the 49ers among several other teams.
ReplyDeleteTexas A&M DL Shemar Turner, a likely Top 50 pick, had to pull out of the Senior Bowl after learning that a stress fracture from camp, that needed a rod inserted into it, never fully healed, sources say.
ReplyDeleteJackson Slater, versatile OL out of Sac state has looked really good today
ReplyDeleteNFC Scout:
ReplyDeleteHowever explosive and powerful you think Walter Nolen is on tape, it’s even better up close. Have used the Ed Oliver comp. frequently with him.
I am seeing so many tweets by draft guys whose favourite team pick after the 49ers saying Nolen would be a great pick for their team. Which basically a way of saying people have him rated too low.
DeleteDeone Walker wouldn't surprise me to see rise into round 1.
ReplyDeleteThat size, power and athletic ability has an NFL comp - Dexter Lawrence. Walker is taller and longer though.
DeleteHeh, Gridiron Grading go a step further and compare him to Chris Jones!
DeleteTurion Ingram-Dawkins, DT, Georgia looks like the most sound DT, technique wise, during drills. Really fluid movement.
ReplyDeleteVirginia Tech DI Aeneas Peebles has been very disruptive today.
ReplyDeleteNC State OT Anthony Belton rising up boards with his Senior Bowl 1v1's.
ReplyDeleteCB Maxwell Hairston has had a really nice first day. Very good hips, fluid mover that can change directions with ease and has the speed to carry vertical with WRs.
ReplyDeleteTennessee IDL Omarr Norman Lott. Fluid mover and quick.
ReplyDeleteAny team looking to add a pass rush element up front should like what he offers.
DeleteOregon NT Jamaree Caldwell wins a rep against Wyatt Milum.
ReplyDeleteFastest players (MPH) during Senior Bowl practices (via Zebra Sports):
ReplyDelete21.61 - CB Jaylin Smith
21.36 - WR Kyle Williams, CB Dorian Strong
21.26 - CB Darien Porter
20.84 - SAF Jonas Sanker
20.64 - WR Tez Johnson
20.45 - CB Keondre Jackson
20.39 - SAF Sebastian Castro
Annual shout-out to Razor and Scooter for the draft enlightenment (I don't watch much college ball, absent Texas and Oregon as daughter and stepson attend there......). If the 49ers hit in FA and the draft, they're set up to do really well next season w the schedule....
ReplyDeleteMy pleasure and thanks!
DeleteEarly standouts from the senior bowl.
ReplyDeleteGreen and Donovan Ezeiruaku went against Connerly Jr and Ersery and held up well in the run game and recorded several wins in pass rush drills.
Walter Nolan has been a practice wrecker and TJ Sanders has stood out as well.
Apparently Jalen Royals WR has stood out as well which is good for the small school guy.
More Senior bowl standouts.
ReplyDeleteTez Johnson - Apparently he was able to get free repeatedly against press man which was a surprise given his tiny size.
Zabel played so well that some are making him there IOL 1 as apparently he went through a series where he played OT,OG,C and didnt lose a rep in 1on1's, which is designed for the DL to win.
Walter Nolen has reportedly been “unblockable” early on into Senior Bowl practices.
ReplyDeleteNolen has reportedly been “drawing”Aaron Donald and Ed Oliver comparisons, due to his dominant power and elite athleticism.
Many NFL scouts reportedly believe Nolen’s abilities are “up there” with Jalen Carter and believe he’s worthy of a potential Top-15 pick.
I just saw a murder, Mike Green (Edge Marshall) vs. Conerly (OT Oregon)
ReplyDeleteYeah, green flabacked Connerly with a bull rush. His game shows a lot of power but this one will make you wonder about Connerly going forward as well.
DeleteFor what its worth Green was PFF's highest graded edge in college football with a 90 plus grade in both run and pass D.
However questions remained about how he would perform against the big boys in the run D.
Green has solidified himself as a top 20 pick. Weighing in at 250lbs was a huge win for him, and he's looked good out there.
DeleteBad look for Conerly, but he clearly wasn't expecting a power rush.
Connerly was way too high on that rep, Scooter.
DeleteYep, bad rep.
DeleteOne thing of note on that rep. Connerly was playing RT when he is usually on the LT. So he might have been focussing on his footwork. Apparently he looked great the day before.
DeleteRazor,
ReplyDeleteIs there a tv channel where I can watch the Senior Bowl practices?
ESPN unfortunately.

ReplyDeleteThe Senior Bowl is televised on the NFL Network, on fuboTV and I believe it also on ESPN
This year's game is at 2:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, February 1

Thanks guys. Just moved and waiting for AT&T to set me up.
DeleteThe #49ers plan to restructure the contract of All Pro LB Fred Warner’s contract this off-season, per source.
ReplyDeleteThe restructure will save the team more than $12M+ in cap space.
SOURCE: “Kyle wants him. Saleh wants him. He wants to stay. Comes down to $, but a 1 yr prove it deal with incentives is likely the way they go.”
ReplyDeleteThe 49ers will make every effort to keep LB Dre Greenlaw in the Red N Gold.
Notre Dame ED RJ Oben is kicking everyone’s ass that tries to set the edge against him, consistently working off blocks and into the backfield here in team work.
ReplyDeleteIowa State CB Darien Porter with the top speed so far this week topping out at 21.89 mph as a gunner on punt coverage.
ReplyDeleteI have a strong feeling that after the Senior Bowl and the combine that Walter Nolen will have moved into the top 8 and out of reach for the 49ers. If he is still there at #11 the 9ers should sprint to the podium.
ReplyDelete
