I'm really high on Ford. What does PFF say about Jeremiah Ledbetter? What would you think of resigning Solomon Thomas as a rotational piece at DE?

    2. Ledbetter 1 yr, $1.85 million
Thomas - wouldn't hurt to bring him in

  2. Nice to see Green at 250+ (barely). Princely has nice measureables for us... I still haven't dug into his tape that much but I have heard good things.
Membou has shorter arms than I expected tbh.
Arroyo has some really nice tape but his injury history gives you pause.

Becton is out as an FA. He doesnt have the necessary mobility imo
Ford would be a nice add as would Azeez but you must expect him to be a pass rusher ala Dee Ford imo.

    3. Absolutely Scooter,
They are long enough but I kept hearing how long his arms were (as he is a bit shorter) but then they turn out to be basically average for the position. Which is fine but I was thinking they would be longer.

  7. Just did a mock using NFL Mock Draft Database. Made one trade, moving back from 11 to 13 to add pick 150 (Dolphins).

    13. Walter Nolen, DT.
    43. Azareye'h Thomas, CB
    75. Quinshon Judkins, RB
    99. Andrew Mukuba, S
    111. Ashton Gillotte, DE
    137. Chris Paul Jr, LB
    138. Charles Grant, OG
    150. Luke Lachey, TE
    188. Simeon Barrow Jr, DT
    227. Ozzy Trapilo, OT
    231. Dont'e Thornton, WR

I think some of those guys are undervalued by that database.

  9. So the 49ers hire Brant Boyer as their new S.T. coordinator, his record with the Jets has been nothing short of spectacular. Then again both Richard Hightower and Brian Schneider's reputations were both very strong when they came to the 49ers and they both failed under KS. Hopefully KS will be a little more supportive of special teams with Boyer or in 3-5 years we will be looking for another ST coordinator and fans will be blaming Boyer.

    6. I think the issue is that Kyle doesn't care about special teams and that attitude permiates through the team. So no matter who he brings in, I wouldnt expect much from the unit as the culture doesnt care about it.
Oddly enough, he should care about it, because the way he calls games maximizes the special teams impact.

      Delete
    7. Shoup - I agree. Comes down to the attitude.

I read a stat somewhere that during the 7 years of Shanalynch there have been 11 fake punts converted against us versus 0 that we attempted.

For crying out loud, at least do 1 fake punt in the 1st or 2nd game of the season, just so opposing coaches have some tape to prepare for!

      Delete
    8. Shoup, that is my belief too. It's not so much about the resources they commit to it - historically they have been willing to add the resources - but more about the general attitude towards STs which is one of "just don't be garbage".

Until Shanahan gets the players believing it's a priority the results probably won't change dramatically.

      Delete
    9. I have a hard time buying into that theory. The special teams coach and the players all have careers to look after and they are professionals who make a lot of money. They shouldn’t need much motivation beyond their own self interest. I think it’s off base to blame Shanahan. It makes no sense to me.

      Delete
    10. The players are professionals who make a lot of money to do more than just play STs.

I don't think it's a case of these guys not caring, but when you have to learn both STs and your position, and the HC seems to put more emphasis on being good on offense and defense, what are you going to spend most of your effort on?

      Delete
    11. Exactly Scooter,
If the attitude is "just don't lose the game" it will permeate through the team and it wont matter that you spent a lot of money on it or not. Yes, some players will be motivated to always play their best and some will have to have that attitude as Special teams is what keeps them in the league.
The problem is that a lot of them will focus on the area that their coach openly cares about most and their effort and focus will lag in special teams. Over the course of a season that carry over will cost you on several plays One guy will lose lane integrity, one guy will lose focus when going over how the opponent likes try and block kicks, will block incorrectly and leave an untouched rusher.
It stops being a question of if your special teams can win or break even and becomes of a question of if you can avoid losing the game there.

For what its worth Green was PFF's highest graded edge in college football with a 90 plus grade in both run and pass D.
However questions remained about how he would perform against the big boys in the run D.

  37. ...It’s that the 49ers’ leaders believe that it usually costs too much to upgrade at offensive line for potentially marginal gains when larger investments in the defensive line and receiver positions more often lead to giant results. So the 49ers almost always put their chips into positions other than OL and believe they can turn lower-reviewed linemen into inexpensive but serviceable starters.

      Delete
    5. Heh, you disagree I take it!

I guess it depends on how real the rumour is that they are seeing adding speed, in particular in the secondary, as a priority.

Regardless, they need a new nickel CB and a starting safety, barring unexpected retention of Ward and Huff.

      Delete
    6. Edge, OTOH, they already have capable starters in Bosa and Floyd, with YGM and Sam O providing depth. Obviously adding another good edge will never hurt, but its not as urgent a need as is made out. The group was made to look worse than it is by inadequate play at DT, imo.

      Delete
    7. Not at all. I laughed cuz you didn't give a name. Lol.

Floyd is no starter. Just cuz they paid him like one, he belongs in a backup role.

      Delete
    8. Floyd has been a starter almost all of his career, and been just fine as a complementary edge player. He's not great, but he's a quality starter that plays with great effort and motor. He's still the same guy.

Problem was he was asked to be the 2nd best DL on the team this past season - they desperately need to add quality DTs.

      Delete
    9. He was a rotational piece in Buffalo and I think that should've been his role the whole time.

      Delete
    10. He was a rotational piece that still played starter level snaps in that D. He and Rousseau were effectively the starters. The Bills just love to use a heavy rotation.

Prior to that he was playing over 900 snaps a year for the Rams.

With the 49ers he was again used in a heavy rotation, much like at the Bills, but again was effectively the starter with Bosa.

He's not a back up, and I think the 49ers are fine with he and Bosa as the starters. And I think YGM and Sam O are fine as the guys the rotate with.

That's not to say they can't or shouldn't look to improve the position, I just don't think it's as big a need as is made out in some quarters.

      Delete
    11. Rotation is an integral part to the success of this scheme. I remember Kocurek pointing it out and 2 years straight he hasn't had the depth to come in waves with little to no drop off.

    1)  Grey Zabel, N. Dakota St. has been a winner at the Sr. Bowl.
After switching from LOT to OG and C, he dominated 1-on-1's and
IMO, is a O-Line draft prospect the 9ers should be interested in.

    2) Anthony Belton OT, NC St.: My biggest surprise at the Sr. Bowl. At 345 pounds, Belton displayed footwork quick enough to stay in front of edge rushers (like Mike Green and Josaiah Stewart), in 1-on-1 drills. His 36-inch arms allowed him to engage defenders and control the reps. Belton was also able to kick inside and showed he can also play OG.

    3. DT, Indiana. I really like him. Played against a lot of the same teams Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant did and imo was up there with them in terms of quality.

PFFs 2nd highest graded DT from the Big Ten last year, after Graham.

While I agree with you, I also like CJ West DT, Indiana. But If you had a choice, would you draft CJ West, or Thor Griffith DT, Louisville?
Griffith is explosiveness off the LOS (1.65-s 10-yard split), strength and power (benched 225 pounds 45 times) and his
      short-area quickness (a 4.57 pro shuttle time).
I have both West and Griffith going in late 5th Rd.

    5. West.

Griffith is a very intriguing developmental prospect to be sure. I've mentioned him before. Great athletic traits, but very raw.

West is pro ready with impressive athletic traits in his own right.

  54. JUST A THOUGHT: WHAT IS THE BLOGS OPINION?
If the opportunity presented itself, should the 9ers pursue a trade for edge rusher Myles Garrett?
    * Garrett’s contract shouldn't be a problem, the Browns restructured his deal to maximize short-term savings, leaving an acquiring team with a minimal cap hit upon acquiring him. IMO, the question is would Cleveland be willing to take on the dead money (roughly $35 million) from the move?
    * Garrett doesn't have a no-trade clause, but he'd be in a strong position to get a new team to negotiate a new contract with him. Still, even if the Niners gave Garrett a sizable extension, it wouldn't be impossible to manage. Acquiring Garrett would likely lead the 9ers to trade draft pick #11, plus Leonard Floyd to the Browns and
likely trade Yetur Gross-Matos, but would it be worth it for a player as good as Garrett?

    1. I'd imagine it'd take 2 1st's for them to even pick up the phone. He's arguably been the best pass rusher drafted for the past 7 years.

    2. There's only so many guys you can afford to pay top dollar to before it significantly impedes your ability to put decent players around them. And to do so is largely reliant on drafted guys on rookie contracts.

They already have a lot of guys on big money contracts, with the biggest to come this offseason. And they've only had one draft in the last 3 that has really yielded some quality cheap depth.

I think the 49ers are currently in a position where they need to replenish through the draft before they can think about a huge splash via trade or FA.

  55. Right now I think it is far more important for the 49ers to draft well than make trades (unless they are getting more picks) Draft picks are cheap for 4 or 5 years.

  56. Another very interesting developmental rookie who shined in the Shrine game. Thomas Perry C Middlebury D3. I think the 9ers could get him with one of their 3 7th Rd. picks or as a UDFA. Unless he blows them away at the combine.
