  1. Very interesting early mock. I absolutely love the Thomas Perry pick. Hopefully they will take care of some of their weaknesses in Free agency. Maybe at S and NB and they could use those picks on O linemen

    1. Jordan Burch is a guy that definitely intrigues me. I expect him to test very well at the combine.

  3. Just watched a few short videos of Brandon Thorn chatting with Josh Simmons, cutting up some of Simmons film. Simmons sounds like a guy that is going to absolutely nail the interview process. Coaches should love him. Really smart, knows exactly what his plan on any play is, and very receptive to critique. To go with elite athletic traits and good build for the position.

    He's my OT1.

    1. Good player but the injury would prevent me from spending a 1st round pick on him.

    2. Very much depends on how his medicals check out. If everything looks good and is progressing well, he should be the first OL drafted imo.

  5. Senior Bowl side note - 49ers are known to have met with both of the Iowa State WRs, Higgins and Noel.

This is of interest not just because they may be interested in drafting them. The 49ers interviewed their position coach Noah Pauley for the OC role. He won't be the new OC, but could definitely see the team consider offering him a position on staff.

  7. Good to hear the FO, coaches and players all want to bring Greenlaw back as a priority. I'd still draft a LB mid rounds though.

  8. Scoter:
I agree, IMO, Greenlaw the most important FA the 9ers should sign.
    * "I'd still draft a LB mid rounds though." Name of LB you'd like the 9ers to draft?
Razor likes Lander Barton LB, Utah. I like Smael Mondon Jr. LB, Georgia and if memory serves, AES likes Carson Schwesinger LB, UCLA.

Yea, I also like Chris Paul and Nick Martin, but I want to see what they measure at the combine. For me, they both have the same issue. Can they consistently take on blocks in NFL without breaking down for 17.

  10. I was listening to Johnny Del and He thought SF would shy away from Nolan.
His reasoning that last year SF started prioritizing college production, and preferably multiple years of it after getting burned drafting based on potential. He sited SF drafting guys like Kinlaw, Jackson, Thomas, Lance and Latu, all guys with one good season and extreme physical upside.
Then he stated, in 2024, SF drafted guys with at least 32 starts, good college production, and guys who stood out at the senior bowl (at least the guys that went)... ( he argued for Green, but I dont think Green fits the criteria he listed either, as he had one big year) DT's that might fit that criteria are Grant, Williams and Sanders... Edge Rushers that fit it to me are Kennard, Scourton, Pearce and Ezeiruaku.
*Note* I was only listing guys I think that fit the criteria he used at those 2 positions and this is not based on where I think they should be drafted. Tbh the only guy I listed, that I would like at 11 is Pearce.

    1. I like the idea of drafting guys with multiple years of college production.

I would quibble though about suggesting Nolen doesn't fit this criteria. 35 games played and 29 starts for a true junior is pretty good. And while he may not have dominated at Texas A&M like he did his junior year, he improved steadily and was pretty good as a Sophomore.

Green is much more of a one year wonder than Nolen, so not sure what Johnny Del is thinking here.

Agree on Pearce though - he's one of the guys I wouldn't mind at 11.

    1. You can ignore that. He's not going anywhere without getting a new deal.

      Delete
    2. I think he might agree to hold off on a new deal until 2026 if it meant a chance to win a SB.

      Delete
    3. Why would he play for peanuts? There's a SB contender that will be willing to pay him what he's worth.

      Delete
    4. Pretty similar to the CMC deal.

      Delete
    5. When I was making this comment I hadn't realised the option bonuses meant he was still getting paid around $45M over the next two years. I thought his deal was as per your numbers.

I still think he'll want a new deal though. Unlike CMC, the remaing portion of Garrett's current deal only makes him around the 10th highest paid edge - CMC was still highest paid RB.

  14. Two first round picks feels like the floor for a Myles Garrett trade. If I'm the Niners I do that trade in a hearbeat.

    1. Garrett has made it clear that he wants a real shot at a SB. Can you say that the 49ers are in position to deliver on that? Their 6-11 record likely would give a player like Myles pause, imho. There are other teams that are on the cusp of a SB appearance than the 49ers at this point. It will be interesting to see where Garrett lands.

      Delete
    2. I think the players in the league know that the 49ers had some bad luck w injuries and allowing games to get away late.... Browns would be hit w dead cap $30 million- I don't see him being shipped and the GM said as much already.... I prefer seeing if Mack would come up- the schedule sets up well for the 49ers over the likes of Eagles/Lions/Packers next year.

      Delete
    3. I don't think it's so cut and dry.

On one hand I really think the 49ers are in a position where they have to restock the roster with some young talent and losing at least 2 1st rounders (likely more) will make that much harder. Plus they already have a lot of guys on top of the market contracts - the more of these you have the more important it becomes to have cheap young talent around them as you can't afford decent veterans to fill out the roster.

On the other, it is Garrett and he and Bosa would obviously be a fearsome duo. The Rams are probably the best example of how a top heavy team can work, but the cap eventually caught up to them and they've now had to switch gears to looking to infuse with youth.

If they make this move fans should expect a pretty hard reset coming in a few years.

    4. I'd bet my last dollar Lynch is on the phone with the Browns trying to make a deal.

      Delete
    5. And I won't take that bet. I am sure he will be. But so will a lot of teams.

      Delete
    6. Scooter, Kawakami stated that Lynch is looking for a premier edge rusher in F/A before Garrett even became a thing.

      Delete
    7. We'll see. I'm sure they would love to add a top end edge player opposite Bosa, but if it comes at the expense of overhauling the DT room they are making a big mistake imo.

      Delete
    8. I don't know. This draft is loaded at DL and anyone decent between those two is gonna look good.

      Delete
    9. Yeah, if the get Garrett plus fix DT then I'm stoked.

  15. Diptown,
I definitely agree with you on the bad luck and many injures to key players. But key players like CMC and Greenlaw have yet to prove that they are fully recovered enough to play at their pre-injury level. No doubt, Garrett and his agent will seriously consider this. If the 49ers can pounce on Myles, it would be a major signing comparable to signing Deon Sanders 30 yrs ago. But, at that time the 49ers were loudly knocking on a SB entrance. Not so sure that I can honestly say that they are in the same position right now, imho.

    ReplyDelete
  16. One season ago this team was in the SB. I wouldn't be so fast to write them off.

    1. This team is still a SB contender if it can stay healthy and fix a few glaring holes (DT and IOL in particular).

Get Garrett and fix those holes and they should be one of the favourites.

      Delete
    2. Cause for optimism- my feelings are based on the history over the last couple of years of stocking up depth in FA, while trying to get a starter, and then going BPA in the draft. Unfortunately, they can't seem to hit at Edge opposite Bosa. But, there aren't a lot of free agent hits this year from the team- Hufunga and Greenlaw being the two major ones, but Greenlaw is a question-mark/risk and Hufunga is slow on the back end (amazing that they didn't get exposed there more often). Sadly, Brown didn't show much last year though. Apparently, 49ers/Saleh are keen to add speed in the secondary this offseason. So, if they can add a couple of pieces in FA and the draft, they can easily have a floor of 10-7 w a real possibility of 12-5+.

  18. Myles Garrett requests trade: The best team fits for Cleveland Browns' All-Pro edge rusher:
    1) Detroit Lions: Aidan Hutchinson rushing from one side of the line and Garrett crashing in from the other, would give the Lions the best edge duo in the NFL
    2) Washington Commanders: Garrett would headline a scary front alongside DTs Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne.
    3) Green Bay Packers: Would GM Brian Gutekunst give up the draft capital necessary to make such a move? The Packers signed Reggie White to one of the most shocking free agency coups in franchise history, ultimately helping Green Bay win Super Bowl XXXI
    4) Philadelphia Eagles: You can't count out Trader Howie Roseman on a deal, when a name with the heft of MYLES GARRETT comes available. Roseman has made several deals during his run in Philly, including the A.J. Brown theft, so I wouldn't leave the Eagles off the list.
    5) Los Angeles Chargers: Joey Bosa had an injury-plagued season and could be a cut candidate this offseason. Khalil Mack still played at a high level but is headed for free agency and will turn 34 this month. Trading for Garrett would allow the Bolts to move on from both players
Something for the 9er FO to consider: If any of the above teams did
trade for Garrett, would the 9ers still be a top SB contender?

      1) I don't believe Dallas is considered a SB contender, as Garrett has said is a condition that a team must meet. Dallas also have Micha Parsons to take care of.
      2) I have to agree with Scooter, the Vikings will be in the mix for Garrett, but he'll likely want answers on QB's JJ McCarthy
      and Sam Darnold.
      3) IMO, the Bears and Raiders will make offers, but the Lions,
Commanders and Eagles would be Garrets top choices.
      4) The question is, are the Brown willing to eat a dead cap charge of ~$36 Mil if the trade him before June 1? A post-June 1 trade would come with a dead cap charge of ~$14.8 Mil

  20. Cleveland might be interested in such a deal. But not sure that Garrett would be. As a FA, he will chose the team with the best chance to make a run at the SB. At the moment the 49ers are not one of those teams. I place them behind Detroit, Rams, Philadelphia, Washington and Vikings. And that's only counting the NFC. Garrett may look at a contender in the AFC as well.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Is that why the Cowboys are favored by +400?

      Delete
    2. AES,
Garrett is not a FA. He has 2 years left on his contract at vet minimum plus 5 mill for a total of 6.3 mill a year. That doesn't mean he won't be in charge of which team he is traded to.

      Delete
    3. Garrett will have full say. Are you kidding? Aiyuk doesn't have the clout or made the deposits Garrett has and he was able to deny being traded to a team he didn't want. All he has to do is say no and there won't be a thing the Browns can do about it.

      Delete
    4. Lions schedule next year is BRUTAL- and that division will be a battle w Chicago slowly on the rise- Vikings have salary cap issues. Commanders attractive, but Dallas was down w injuries and Philly will be solid (hopefully, Moore goes to the Saints). 49ers only need a couple of starters (Edge, Corner, Safety, Center and LB) and will take care of that in FA. Any given Sunday, but I like their chances next year.

2025 base salary is ~$1.255000 Mil, but add ~$18.5 Mil bonus money
2026 base salary is ~$1.3 MIL, but add ~$19 Mil bonus money

    ReplyDelete
  24. Myles Garrett does NOT have a no-trade clause, but given the Super Bowl aspirations laid out in the request, (to win a SB), the list of acceptable destinations shrinks considerably.
    * If Garrett is willing to accept something like his restructured contract with the Browns, it shouldn't be difficult for teams that are SB contenders to make the trade for him.
    * ...But again, the question is; Are the Browns willing to eat ~$36 Mil in a dead cap charge if they trade him before June 1, or a dead cap charge of ~$14.8 Mil for a post-June 1 trade

    ReplyDelete

    1. He doesn't have to have a no trade clause. He can just refuse. No team will make that trade if the player doesn't want to come there.

      Delete
    2. "He can just refuse?" And do what, set out for the 2 years left on his contract? He's 29 years old and setting out for 2 years would likely be the end of his playing NFL football.

One NFL GM on what a trade for Myles Garrett could look like:

    “Probably a 1+. Can’t wait for the
“It will be 3 1s” crowd. Not happening.

    1 and a 2. 1 and 2 3s. Throw a player in there.”

    ReplyDelete
  26. So I am hearing two scenarios here. #1 Garrett will cost the 49ers Approx. 6 mill a year for the next two years. #2 He will cost the 9ers Approx. 20 mill a year for the next two years. So which is it?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. A little of column A, a little of column B.

Assuming he is traded before the 5th day of the league year, he will cost the 49ers, in cash, around $20M to $25M each year. He has an option bonus due the 5th day of each league year those two years, and if he isn't traded before than the Browns will be on the hook for the 2025 bonus.

BUT, in terms of cap hit, both option bonuses (2025 and 2026) will be pro rated over 5 seasons. So his cap hit in 2025 would only be around $5M, and around $12M in 2026 (with the remainder accruing in 2027 when his contract voids).

      Delete
    2. Scooter,
      Great breakdown as always.

      Delete
    3. He doesn't have much guaranteed money left so it would likely be a 2 part deal. 1 Trade comp is agreed to. 2. New contract gets agreed upon... At least in principal with the new team.

      Delete
    4. The team that trades for Garrett if a trade was made in the summer would be responsible for $14.8M this year and $25M next year.

      Delete
    5. Only if the Browns restructure Garrett's deal. Otherwise they will be on the hook for the full $18.5M option bonus in 2025, and the team that trades for him only responsible for his base salary of $1.3M.

      Delete

    2. That looks really good to me, with one exception. That offseason basically means you've replaced Hargrave with Alexander, who I like but will still be rookie and late 3rd/ early 4th pick. And that's the only change you've made to the DT group, aside from letting a couple of other guys go (eg Givens).

I know the argument will be that the addition of Garrett will help cover weakness at DT, but end of the day that's just not a good DT group and the interior of the DL will continue to be an issue.

For mine, a perverse outcome of trading for Garrett will be the team probably also then needs to add a good starting DT via FA, as they can'tgrab one in the 1st round of the draft.

      Delete
    3. Agreed. That's why I need good people like you around me.

    4. I think if they added a guy like Poona Ford in FA (should be reasonably low cost and able to give you solid starting snaps), then added a duo of DTs in the mid rounds (e.g., Alexander, West, Phillips, Caldwell, Farmer), that could give you enough solid options at DT to have a viable interior.

If they drafted Alexander I would also love to see him used in the rotation at both DE and DT.

      Exactly.

  34. DT, Edge, OL, OL, with their first 4 picks. Drafting from the inside - out has always been my philosophy. Stopping the opponents run game and pressuring the opposing QB are vital for 2025 and beyond. Protecting Purdy and creating running lanes for the RBs will make the offense more balanced and proficient. This year's draft has to have more hits than last year, imho.
