GOOD NEWS for the 9er defense, KS and JL got their man Saleh back!
ReplyDeleteI'm a little disappointed that he didn't get a head coaching job, but glad he's coming back to the 49ers.
ReplyDeletehopefully, after 2 yrs and a ring, or two......... get the comp pick again.
DeleteExcellent! I was quietly getting very concerned
ReplyDeleteSaleh is a good man, glad to have him back.
ReplyDelete9ERS GET 3 COMP PICKS FOR THE 2025 DRAFT:
ReplyDeleteOverthecap.com, is projected the 9ers to receive 3 compensatory picks due to the free agency departures of D-lineman Chase Young, QB Sam Darnold and WR Ray-Ray McCloud III last season. The 9ers will now have draft pick #11, #43, #75, #99, #111, #137, #138,
#188, #228 and #254.
I can't find any site on line or on Youtube that says he has signed with the 9ers. Quite a few sites are saying he may be close. Who is the source that said he has signed with the 49ers?

π¨BREAKING NEWS TO THE DESK OF BAY AREA BOB π¨
Former Jets head coach Robert Saleh has informed the 49ers tonight that he will return as defensive coordinator.
Donovan Jackson would give the 49ers the LG they thought they were getting when they drafted Banks.
ReplyDeleteScooter
DeleteWhere would you draft OG Jackson? Early to mid Rd #2?
34+" arms
DeleteJackson is a late round 1/ early round 2 prospect for mine, but think he'll get drafted early to mid round 2.
DeleteRazor, I reckon those arms are at least 35".
Excellent news on Saleh. Good chance that we will be a top 10 D next year!
ReplyDeleteAlso good for Sorenson to move on. Didn't make sense to me that he will be on the team on another capacity. Would be embarrassing for him to manage the same players in a different capacity and would overall be detrimental to everyone.
The Raiders and Pete Carroll have reportedly reached an agreement to make him the franchise's next HC, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
ReplyDeletePete Carroll and the Raiders have reached agreement on a three-year deal, per @AdamSchefter
ReplyDeleteInsider Matt Maiocco on the future of Brandon Staley with the 49ers:
ReplyDelete“I’m hearing that he probably will not be back”
Not necessary with Saleh giving K J Wright the time he needs to be the next DC.
Lander Barton, LB, Utah is my pick at #111.
ReplyDeleteIf they want to go guard at 43 I'd prefer Jonah Savaiinaea OT Arizona. Perfect fit....
ReplyDeleteHe's good too, but Jackson had a heck of a year. In addition to great tape and measurables, played for the national champs who had a dominant offense while losing two very highly rated OL starters to injury (LT and centre) as well as the backup LT. And Jackson might have saved them by agreeing to switch to LT to cover for the injuries - he was playing very well out there by season end.
DeleteI imagine that could cause a team to reach for him at the end of round 1.
DeleteIt might. But if they are both available at 43 I'd take Jackson.
DeleteImho, thinking that Savaiinea drops to 43 is in the same category as Mason Graham falling to 11. But, if this small miracle happens the 49ers will have two starters on day one.
DeleteI think Savaiinaea is the better fit but either one is likely an upgrade over Banks.
DeleteOut of curiosity, what makes you think Savaiinaea is the better fit?
DeleteI think he's a better zone run processor.
DeleteHmmm, guess I don't see it that way. I think Jackson moves better.
DeleteWhich player do you consider has the better displacement strength?
DeleteIf Savaiinaea latches on he can move people. I just worry that he looked like he struggled moving laterally/ changing direction in both run blocking and pass pro. Speed to power and inside moves gave him trouble where they get him needing to change his track - can knock him off balance.
DeleteFair enough.
Deleteπ¨ 2025 Senior Bowl Rosterπ¨
ReplyDeleteNational Team LB/EDGE coached by @49ers KJ Wright and @Saints Adam Gristick.
Wow - have they changed how coaching staff are selected? I thought it was just the bottom ranked NFC and AFC teams whose coaching staff was retained?
DeleteRegardless, nice to get the first hand exposure to the players.
East West Shrine Bowl coached by @49ers Andrew Hayes-Stroker (Assistant DB coach), Cameron Brown (Defensive quality control) and
ReplyDeleteMiguel Reveles (Offensive assistant).
Ohio State iDL Tyleik Williams officially declared for the 2025 NFL Draft, he announced.
ReplyDeleteTre’Von Moehrig is a F/A S the 49ers should have interest in at 25 yrs old.
ReplyDeleteScooter,
ReplyDeleteLooks like you were closer with Green. He is smaller than expected. Shorter, Shorter arms and 236 weight if the early report is to be believed.
I'm still going to wait until the weigh ins, but I believe the heights and weights etc listed with those coaching announcements are the ones given to the Senior Bowl by the schools, which you can expect are more in line with actuals than what the schools put on their websites.
DeleteI also see Green's measurements come with a V after them, for verified. Which means they are official measurements recorded by Marshall, i.e., what he played at last season.
DeleteDan Bruglar just listed Green at 6-3 1/4, 250.
ReplyDeleteBrugler doesn't have official measurements.
DeleteI just spoke with him and am waiting on his answer.
DeleteCool, thanks razor, interested in hearing what he says.
DeleteEither way, we'll find out his current measurements early next week.
They are verified numbers (hence the "v") but they're from last spring, not next week's Senior Bowl. Players don't even arrive until tomorrow.
DeleteCool, that was my understanding.

ReplyDeleteDane Brugler
@dpbrugler
Several newcomers in my updated top-50, including Marshall edge rusher Mike Green (6-3 1/4, 250).
Explosive off the snap, relentless motor and more physical vs. the run than expected. Stock πΌplayer.
I got us taking Jordan Phillips, DT, Maryland with pick #99.
ReplyDeleteI'd be happy getting one of him, CJ West or Darius Alexander on day 3.
DeleteRobert Saleh is officially returning to the 49ers as defensive coordinator, per
ReplyDelete@TomPelissero
I'll sleep like a baby now!
ReplyDeleteSame! Great news
DeleteThe defense just got better.
ReplyDeleteOkay so the DC position is filled all we have left S.T. Coordinator. The problem with the ST spot is, I believe that KS is more of the problem than the coordinators have been. He needs to give his coordinators more roster spots that they have control over. The ST coordinators that he has had both had excellent reputations before coming to the 9ers. KS needs to give them more roster autonomy like Harbaugh did. So now it is time to move on to free agency. Three depth pieces that I like and should come cheap. #1 DT LAC Poona Ford #2 DT Jackson Jeremiah Ledbetter and #3 DE/DT NyJ Soloman Thomas
ReplyDeleteI'd love to see an analysis done on how many roster spots the top STs units in the NFL have set aside just for STs coverage specialists (ie, aside from K, P, LS and PR) and compare that to the 49ers.
DeleteCompletely agree re signing Poona Ford.
I also wonder how much the vet days off the 49ers allow their starters impacts on the ability of the STs coordinator to get his guys ready, both in TC and during the season.
DeleteScooter,
DeleteI saw a David Lombardi post about a year ago. He said it wasn't as simple as roster spots. It was more about veto power. When the team is doing their final 53 cut down the ST coach has veto power on any 50/50 position cuts. IE when they are making their final cut at CB and the DC and position coach like 2 players equally the ST coach gets final say on that cut.
Are we sure that isn't the power Schneider had? Womack got cut to keep Ya Sin and Luter, two STs guys. Jalen Grahem got cut to keep DFF, a STs guy. Patrick Taylor was kept over a bunch of other RBs in large part due to his STs experience.
DeleteScooter,
DeleteI have no idea what power KS gives his ST coordinator. There have been two reporters who I have heard say that KS has a rep for not valuing his ST coaches and that he doesn't give them as many roster spots or as much power in roster decisions as other HCs especially compared to Harbaugh when he coached the 49ers. Those two reporters were David Lombardi and Larry Krueger.
Yeah, I'm just saying the evidence doesn't really seem to support that. Plenty of resources have been spent on STs and they keep guys at the bottom of the roster for their STs ability.
DeleteHas there ever been a better HC lineup in one division than there will be next season in the AFC west?
ReplyDeleteI rewatched Will Campbell and came away feeling a bit better about him than after initial watch. He does move well, he's clearly a smart player, and he's strong. If the 49ers take him at 11 I would understand it.
ReplyDeleteBut he does struggle with speed. Abdul Carter and Kyle Kennard really gave him some trouble. In particular with inside moves after threatening speed outside.
For mine he's a similar prospect as Mike McGlinchey was coming out. Not as tall and long and probably a bit better laterally, but similar types of strengths and weaknesses. Keeping in mind that McGlinchey coming out of college was pretty sturdy, it wasn't until he tried dropping weight to improve his mobility that he started really having strength and anchor issues.
I will be shocked if they draft OL at 11 given Foerster's statements early in 2024.
DeleteI wouldn't be shocked by it, but I am not expecting it.
DeleteRe Foerster's comments, I believe what he was saying is that he doesn't feel it is necessary or worth it to try and force an OL pick if the value isn't there.
DeleteFoerster suggested that unless you're picking the cream of the crop, it's better to chase playmakers than linemen. "At some point can you draft them? Yeah, you draft Trent Williams," he said. "You pick a draft where you're getting a difference maker.
DeleteThey ain't drafting an OL at pick 11.
Kyle Kennard DE/EDGE South Carolina durable pass rusher that could be had in Round 3.
ReplyDeleteGrey Zabel at 304 and 32.25" arms is going to be a kick ass center.
ReplyDeleteApparently both Jordan Phillips and CJ West stood out in first day of East West Shrine practices. Would love either of those guys in round 4.
ReplyDeleteFor anyone that is keen to see the 49ers reunite with DJ Jones, I recommend checking CJ West out. Similar types of players. Short, stocky, build that provides natural leverage making him hard to move, yet also quick enough to penetrate the backfield. Heavy hands to shock and shed an OL. Nice push pull swim move.
DeleteBruglar's thoughts from EW Shrine practices this morning:
ReplyDelete- No surprise, Kyle McCord the best of the QB group, but Cam Miller had some good moments too.
- Cobee Bryant is rail thin (171 lbs), but he made several plays on the ball in 1v1. He and Nohl Williams are the top-2 CBs here (also the two that chirp the most).
- Yesterday, I tweeted that DT Jordan Phillips would get my vote for the highest-drafted of this Shrine group (among guys actually participating). And he didn't let me down at practice. With his heavy hands and movements, he'll play in the NFL as long as he wants.
- Three guys that kept flashing: RB Jacory Croskey-Merritt, WR Ricky White and CB Alijah Huzzie. Stock up guys.
“This is my personal opinion, if they ask me, invest in guys that touch the ball, guys that can touch the ball and score touchdowns. And then there’s a range of guys, second, third, fourth round, fifth round even, that we will find starting offensive linemen in. At some point can you draft them?
ReplyDeleteYeah, you draft [OL] Trent Williams. You pick a draft where you’re getting a difference-maker. But there’s guys that can make a difference, that touch the ball, well into the second, third, fourth rounds, or second and third rounds, at least. And definitely in the first round. That guy that touches the ball, it makes a huge difference in the game.
The right guard makes a difference, we’ve talked about it before, but that’s where we’re able to find fourth and fifth round draft picks. How dominant is the difference between pick 34 versus pick 54, in offensive line play? And that’s what you’re trying to balance all the time. So, will we draft the best available player, all those types of things? Definitely will. And were we possibly ready to draft guys higher in the draft? Yes. But if there’s somebody that can touch the ball and make plays, in my opinion, if you ask me, ‘Chris, do you want him?’ I want the guy that touches the ball, for me.”
Foerster's full quote above.
ReplyDeleteIt's a lot of words to basically say we won't reach for an OL. He even says they'll take them high if the value is there in the last paragraph.
DeleteKeep in mind the context here is that OL flew off the board last year and put the 49ers in a situation of either reaching or waiting. This was Foerster's response to queries about the approach they took to wait.
He said he'll take them high IF they're Trent Williams or a difference maker. There is no Trent Williams in this draft. He's had this same philosophy going all the way back to Miami.
DeleteI think you are putting too much weight into this. He's been an OL coach at places that have drafted OL high in the past. He even says there were guys they'd have drafted but were taken before they picked.
DeleteLet me put it another way. They aren't going to pass on an OL they like and is highest on their board just because they think they can get guys that can do the job later as well.
DeleteAnd were we possibly ready to draft guys higher in the draft? Yes. But if there’s somebody that can touch the ball and make plays, in my opinion, if you ask me, ‘Chris, do you want him?’ I want the guy that touches the ball, for me.”
DeleteHe literally tells you that if the choice were to draft the guys that were "taken" he'd want the playmaker.
And just before that "So, will we draft the best available player, all those types of things? Definitely will."
DeleteGiven John Lynch has confirmed after Day 2 of the draft that they looked at OTs in both the 1st and 2nd round, including acknowledging Rosengarten was a guy they were looking at in the 2nd round, I feel pretty confident in saying the team is not averse to taking OL high.
I guarantee you they will not draft an OL at 11. It's probably gonna be Walter Nolen. Foerster just proved his philosophy again by getting Puni in round 3 and I expect he'll select another from 43 onward.
DeleteI think they'll take the best player available at 11 that plays in the trenches. It will likely be a DL.
DeleteYea, I'm a firm believer that this regime doesn't draft bpa in round 1. They draft for need in that round.
DeleteUsually yes. Pearsall was an exception.
DeleteThey need to improve both the DL and OL - I am sure Shanahan and Lynch won't be blind to the struggles they had last year on both sides of the trenches.
End of the day I think the top DL talent in this draft is better and more numerous than the top OL talent, so very much expect their first pick will be DL. But also expect them to add OL on day 2.
Pick 31, while technically a 1st rounder, is essentially a 2nd.
DeleteNick Saban on Bill Belichick’s CB critical factors:
ReplyDelete-6’0”, 180, sub 4.5
-Man coverage skills
-Tackling ability
-Downfield ball skills
Compensatory trait:
- Elite speed (4.3) - Aaron Glenn
Compensatory trait(s) are equally important as the critical factors!
Cincinnati LT John Williams has the movement skills and hand to hand combat to eventually be a LT at the NFL level.
ReplyDeleteSaleh is gonna get his choice at 11. This defensive front has to be rebuilt left of Bosa.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I hope the Niners use five or six picks on the DL and OL. I would suggest other than Puni and Bosa all jobs are up for grabs. I know Williams is there however longevity is short.
ReplyDeleteTony Pauline on what he’s heard from 49ers coaches at the Shrine Bowl:
ReplyDelete“A major priority will be to increase team speed on defense, specifically in the secondary, via the draft and free agency. There is also a cry to be more innovative on defense.”
"There is also a cry to be more innovative on defense."
DeleteWonder what that means? And how it will effect their draft strategy.
Adding speed at all three levels could give Saleh some exotic blitz packages.
DeleteI was thinking it could suggest they will target guys with position flexibility.
DeleteDefinitely.
DeleteScooter, you gotta respect how the Niners look ahead to future drafts with the intention of pairing up need to positional strength. A lot of the way they go about running a franchise is a blueprint for anyone interested.
ReplyDeleteI don't know that they do this to any great degree - I know they do look ahead to see what sort of positions they expect they will be strong in future years, they've mentioned this before, but not sure they try and match 'need' to it.
DeleteWhat I do like is how they make sure to head into any draft with very few positions they absolutely have to draft early, but also tie FA acquisitions to their draft stratrgy.
We're very lucky to have this regime.
DeleteAgreed. They aren't perfect, but no front office/ coaching staff is.
DeleteI like the Eagles big today with Barkley 200 yds/2 TD's. I think Fangio schools Kingsbury in this game.
ReplyDeleteTony Pauline on veteran QB Joe Flacco:
ReplyDelete“I’m told to keep an eye on the San Francisco 49ers, Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots as suitors for Flacco in the offseason, as all would look for a veteran backup.” π
The amount of QBs drafted per round over the last 10 drafts:
ReplyDelete1st: 35
2nd: 6
3rd: 13
That 5th year option has a huge affect on round 2.
Will Saleh's call for more speed on D spell the end of Brown and Hufanga on the 49ers? If so I see them picking up 1 or 2 safeties in free agency. Likely safeties who also have experience at NB also.
ReplyDeleteProbably re Hufanga. Brown will probably stay just because he's still got two more years on the cheap, so offers decent depth at low cost.
DeleteGetting a safety that can play nickel is a good call. Saleh really liked Jimmie Ward iirc.
Going to be interesting to see which positions the 49ers look to find starters for through FA.
Trevon Moehrig, FS, Raiders could be a target.
DeleteCJ Henderson, CB, Jaguars
Jamien Sherwood, LB, Jets
Draft each position in addition.
I'm expecting the 49ers will be willing to put good money on up to two FAs, but probably not more than that. Other FA additions will be more mid tier and lower.
DeleteOne of the two I expect will be a center, most likely Dalman. The other I expect will be a LB, likely Sherwood if they fear Greenlaw's injuries. If they can push the money out to make 3 splash signings then I would love to add Moehrig.
Another guy I think they should strongly consider is NT Bobby Brown III from the Rams. Still young, been decent for the Rams, pretty athletic for his size.
They need a starting defensive lineman that can shut down the run and rush the passer next to Bosa, then add Nolen.
DeleteDTs that are both good at shutting down the run and rushing the passer are hard to find, and they get paid.
DeleteI'd be happy adding Nolen in the draft if they can find a good 1T to pair him with. Which is where Brown would come in.
Would also look to add a guy late day 2/ early day 3 of the draft that can do a bit of both, which is where I like guys like CJ West, Jordan Phillips or Darius Alexander.
DTs that are both good at shutting down the run and rushing the passer are hard to find, and they get paid.
DeleteThat's why Nolen is worth pick 11.
DJ Jones shouldn't be too expensive.
Ah I see what you meant now.
DeleteI like Nolen, but his run defense "prowess" is all based on penetrating gaps (which he's very good at), not holding up against an OL. He can often end up giving up gaps due to his aggressiveness. I think you need to pair him with a good run defending 1T.
Just rewatching Nolen, against Florida and LSU, and tbf his run defense is good for a penetrating type DT. He's not as undisciplined as I first thought. And he can hold up against doubles better than I recalled. And love how active he is - refuses to stay blocked.
DeleteI very much still think Kocurek is going to love him. I'd be happy taking him at 11.
He can hold the point of attack as well as penetrate. When you talk about versatility, I think he can play 0-5i. 1t's as you pointed out are much easier to acquire.
DeleteProbably over the top but he might have the potential to be another Chris Jones.
DeleteI think if Nolen ends up being really good he'll be more a Geno Atkins type player than Chris Jones.
DeleteI think his DC compares him to Quinnen Williams.
DeleteIf they could sign Bobby Brown III for $6-8 million apy and DJ Jones for $3-4 million, and then add Nolen and West, Phillips or Alexander, throw in Kennard at 43 and they will have completely retooled their entire defensive front.
ReplyDeleteAlpha Unit: Kennard / Brown III /Nolen/Bosa
DeleteBravo Unit: Floyd / West / Jones / Yetur
Another thought that came to mind is that you want to maximize Bosa's prime years by giving him some blue chip help next to him.
ReplyDeleteBills' Phillips looked like Justin Smith the way he fork lifted Callendo and drove him back into Mahomes. Bloody freaking brilliant play!
ReplyDeleteHe's a F/A too.
DeleteThe Niners are no longer the team that got the closest to a 3 Peat. Sad times.
ReplyDeleteDarn Roger Craig, lol.
DeleteHmmmm... another intriguing DT to keep in mind - Thor Griffith from Louisville. Exceptional athlete. Very explosive. Currently considered by most draft sites a late round pick, will be interesting to see if he gets some traction heading towards the draft.
ReplyDelete1.65 10 yard split at 320? Sign me up!
DeleteRazor, not sure if you've seen, but the guys over at Gridiron Grading have your guy Simeon Barrow rated very highly.
DeleteIf you're not familiar with GG, they produce prospect analytics based on comparing key college production metrics weighted by opponent difficulty, against a decade worth of players drafted.
Graham and Nolen their top 2 DTs (Thor Griffith actually comes out 2nd, but they acknowledge his level of competition is a big factor).
Yea, I love Gridiron's stats. Very underappreciated tool they provide.
Delete
