Gameday Week 12: 49ers vs Bills

Huge challenge for the 49ers defense tonight. Can the offense help them out?

49ers inactives: LT Trent Williams (ankle) DE Nick Bosa (hip, oblique) CB Deommodore Lenoir (knee) LG Aaron Banks (concussion) LB Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles (knee) DT Jordan Elliott (concussion) QB Brandon Allen

  1. Jake Majors, Center, Texas 6-3 315 lbs., looks like another 3rd round gem with 52 starts totaling 3,361 snaps.

    1. He did last night. First time I noticed him. Got to looking and he's someone to keep an eye on for sure.

    2. Per Walter Football:
USC Jonah Monheim, C/G/OT, USCHeight: 6-5. Weight: 295.
      Projected 40 Time: 5.50.
      Projected Round (2025): 2-3.

Mannheim is highly rated, and is the sliding type Oline player Shanahan seems to like.
If he's available in these projected rds, hopefully the 49ers show some interest.

    3. Scouting Report for Texas Center Jake Majors:
Top pass blocking Center in 2025 draft. His run blocking will need work and he needs to add lower body strength.
      * Cerebral player, diagnoses D fronts pre-snap and communicates adjustments effectively to other lineman.
      * Scheme-versatile blocker. Adept at executing zone and drive blocking in power schemes.
      * Needs to develop Lower body strength to improve his ability to anchor against power moves.
      * I have him being drafted late 2nd to mid 3Rd round.

      Delete
    4. Yea, I think he's another 3rd rounder.

    5. dreamers. Niners will never draft o-line in the 1-3 rounds. those picks are for d-line pass rush, wide receivers and 3rd round running backs

  2. Wild video of Buffalo blizzard shows how snowy the Bills stadium is ahead of 49ers game
    * By kickoff, there could be feet of snow on the ground south of Buffalo and nearly two feet in Orchard Park. A lake effect snow warning is in effect through Monday evening, with the warm waters of Lake Erie feeding narrow but strong bands of precipitation across western New York.

9er O-linan will need to carry snow shovels to clear a path for RB's..lol

    3. Haha! Yup. The snow could make this game very interesting. Mason and Guerendo could play a big part in the game.

  3. This should be a low scoring game. However, the way this season has gone thus far - who knows. 6 - 3 Niners.

    1. Not so much Aaron Rodgers. No problem, the 49ers just have to handle their own business.

  5. 49ers so far this season:

Outgained opponents by 883 yards (80.2 per)

    Opponents scored 30 TD's/49ers only 26

  6. 9ERS FIX THEIR MISTAKE:
49ers waive wide receiver Bell amid rocky 2024 season
    * The 49ers announced they waived the second-year wide receiver on Friday, less than two seasons after San Francisco selected Bell No. 253 overall in the 2023 NFL Draft.

  7. If Bell goes unclaimed don't be surprised if he comes back.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I doubt even Harbaugh will have interest in Bell and expect he'll revert to the practice squad.

  9. In two preseason games this year Bartch allowed just one QB pressure (hurry) in 29 pass blocking snaps.

  10. 9ers still can't score in the red zone! But 3 points is better than nothing and they did move chains running against the Bills D.

  11. I can't wait to hear how CMCs injury is Shanahans fault.

    ReplyDelete
  12. The Bill's Oline is manhandling the 49ers defense. As far as CMC, I only hope it's not the Achilles.

    ReplyDelete
  13. CMC walked off the field and into the locker room on his own. Maybe that's a good sign. Mason is running hard. Moody is doing Moody things. The defense is getting steamrolled. Need the D to make adjustments for the 2nd half and learn how to tackle again.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Hopefully both offense and defense will play much better in the second half. They need something positive.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Coach,
Is it time for the 49ers to look to the 2025 draft for a young QB to groom behind Purdy? Purdy can't seem to conquer his issues with a wet football.

    1. It is hard enough to find a good QB little own a great one. I think they will sign him for about 65 mill.

  18. $65M for Brock Purdy??? Please.

  19. Will soon be 76 and beginning to realize I may not see another 49ers Super Bowl win in my lifetime. It's a shame, a real shame.

    ReplyDelete
  20. If I was a Cleveland Browns fan I might feel that way at age 74, but I'm a proud 49ers fan. And that means my team already has 5 Lombardi's.

    ReplyDelete
  21. The 49ers remind me of last years Eagles. The Eagles collapsed late in the year. Fans were calling for their HCs job. Look at them this year. The big difference is Jalen Hurts is a very good QB while Purdy is one level below Hurts. He is a good QB. I think a full off seasons rest. Much of the roster coming back healthy, a couple of Asst. coaching changes including hiring Salah back as well as a couple of offensive assistants to help KS and lastly a very good draft rebuilding both the O line and D line. I think BP can win a SB if they can put an O line like the 2019 O line in front of him.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Two back to back bad loses can deflate the team going forward and begin the blame game in the locker room. Sticking together as a team during this time is key while also remembering that the season is not over. 5 more to go.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Who's the next coach? Who's the next GM? And who should stay, who should go on this woeful, disappointing 49ers team?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Reasons,
Calm down. We've seen what this is capable of when their healthy. There will be changes, no doubt. But it won't be Shanahan and Lynch.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Correct, Shanahan and Lynch are not going anywhere.

    2. UC,
      Per Adam Shefter.
"I have gotten zero indication that the 49ers are looking to move on from John Lynch or Kyle Shanahan..
How quickly do you think it would be before another team was looking to hire them"
      VERY quickly @AdamSchefter #PMSLive

I'm with you. I don't see Shanahan and Lynch going anywhere soon.

    3. AES, I know you assume any "Anonymous" post that is willing to actually criticize the 49ERS organization to be accredited to 49Reasons, but that post isn't him. I am. And here's my take:

I believe the NINERS have a structural organizational problem due to Kyle's unquestioned authority regrading any and every football decision that the 49ers make, especially as of late. Apparently 4 NFC Championship appearences and 2 NFC Championship trophies means Kyle is beyond reproach, even though I admit it's an impressive run, and an accomplishment in of itself. The problem is, Kyle CANNOT FINISH! Let's be clear about that. It's more than bad luck or simple circumstance at this point because it's track record at this point. They seem paralyzed in their ability to even attempt to fix glaring problems because of this. Look, I think Kyle has a lot of strengths as a HC, but it's also been clear to me for a few years now that he has some obvious weaknesses as well. This biggest flaw is his arrogant stubbornness. He refuses to listen to any criticism as if he's immune to criticism as long as he refuses to acknowledge it. That's all well and good as long as you are winning, but we have moved well past that point this season. Anyone who thinks all of the 49ers problems can be explained away by way of injuries, is missing the big picture. Kyle has an absolute inability to properly manage his players. He ran CMC into the ground last year, so by the time we got to the big dance, he was breaking down. That was almost inexcusable. What he did with CMC post midseason return this year is flat out malpractice, considering he has two MORE THAN CAPABLE running backs in his stable besides CMC. It's a microcosm of everything wrong with Kyle. Whether it's Special Teams, the OL, and now the entire defensive coaching staff, he refuses to make even minor adjustments and it's sucking the life out of this once proud team. They are done season. That's a wrap. My only question is whether or not Kyle's stubborn, my way or the highway attitude and lack of accountability means this regime's best days are behind them?

      Delete
    4. And for the record .... I am not calling a change at HC and/or GM at this point. This regime has been too successful up until this season to start from scratch after what feels like an aberration of a season. But I also don't think this organization can go into the offseason as the status quo! Serious changes need to be made, I'm just not sure Kyle is capable, and that's a concern. Plus, I am afraid they still won't find 'the answer" at the most important position on the team because I don't think Kyle's ability to evaluate offensive talent is up to par, especially at QB and OL, and I don't see him relinquishing those duties any time soon!

I watched the Mich, and Ohio St. game as well and Graham and Kenny Grant looked good. What rd would you project for both of them?

    ReplyDelete
  31. From KS's presser this afternoon. CMC out for the year a patella tendon injury but not a tear. Mason to the IR.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Mason Graham, Michigan = top 10 - First Rd. Gone by time 9ers pick
Kenny Grant, Michigan = late first Rd to early 2nd RD

    ReplyDelete
  33. Thanks GEEP,
Graham is being regarded as a top 10 from most draftniks I've seen as well. Grant is a very stout interior player that could jam-up the LOS.
But, I feel that the 49ers may prioritize on an Edge and a Center that can slide along the Oline if needed.

  34. Walter Nolen, 3t, Ole Miss has the GTFO that Kocurek values. 1st round talent.

  35. What I like best about DT Walter Nolen, is his 6.5 sacks!
He would be a very good fit next to Bosa, especially if the 9ers decide to part ways with Hargrave!

  36. QUESTION FOR THE BLOG:
In the 2025 draft, what position(s) do the 9ers need to address, with their Rd one thru Rd five draft picks?
    * With the first 2 rounds I would draft a DT and EDGE.
    * With Rd #3 I would draft an OT and a Center
    * With Rd #4 I would draft an OG
NOTE: If I were GM (JL), I'd try to sign QB San Darnold who's a free agent in 2025. His 2024 salary with the vikings was $1,250.000, but
will likely take ~$10 Mil to sign him for 2025 season. After signing Darnold, I'd delay extending BP's contract until after the 2025 season and let him compete with Darnold for starting QB.
    * By not extending BP, the 9ers should have enough cap space to sign a free agent TE and a free agent CB.

    ReplyDelete
  37. GEEP,
Very well thought out post. I would do things a little differently.
    Draft
Rd1 OT or DT best player available at the time
    Rd2 C
Rd3a OT or DT whichever they didn't get in the 1st Rd
    Rd3b DE
Sign Darnold look to trade BP if they can get a high to medium high 1st Rd pick. Look to trade Deebo. I would take anything for him. If they can't trade him cut him after June 1.
FA sign sign a top G and a TE
Whether they traded BP or let him play on his rookie contract and traded or cut Deebo that should give them quite a bit of cap space. They might have room in free agency for more than a great/good G and a good TE.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Well... given the recent games, I would say SF could go a number of ways at the top. Rd one... BPA between DT, Edge, and OT. I would prefer OT but based on what Ive seen I think Edge is most likely where the BPA will be.
Rd 2. Here I think There is still possible Edge, OT, even OG with an outside shot at CB and Safety.
Rd 3. DT, CB, and LB comes into play here and potentially Qb ( I dont like the class overall or the guys at the top, my sleeper is Riley Leonard)
Rd 4. Id take a flyer on an athletic LB like Lander Barton.

FA- Id look to sign a guard similar to Feliciano (but younger) who wouldn't cost much but would be an upgrade over Banks. Then add a run stuffing DT. Finally, I would add a Center w/ Drew Dalman being my primary target.
I would offer Purdy a contract at around 45M per year with outs in it for SF and incentives that could boost it for Brock. More than that and ill just have him play it out w/ the understanding he can be tagged.
Happy Holidays Gents. Ill try to frequent here a bit more.

    1. Nice to see you back Shoup. I agree with ur draft projections. I believe that the 49ers will target an Edge in rd 1. Oline 2nd and CB 3rd. Like yourself, I also bought up the prospect of drafting a QB as well.
Bosa may continue to experience injury issues because of his style of play. Trent may have lost a step and Mooney Ward could move on. Purdy has lost a little shine this year. But if he gets his big bag so be it. My thinking is that the 49ers should still find a young QB to groom for the future. But for now, I want to see them fight!

Thanks for the response and good to see you back on the blog.
      * For the most part, I agree with you, with one exception, I don't believe the 9er FO has changed their mind(s) with respect to drafting an OT in Rd #1, or IOL in the first 2 - 3 rounds.
      * Draft a QB: I agree with you, I don't like this class overall, or the players at the top.
      * I would add to my original post: I believe the remaining five
games of the 2024 season will determine two things, A) Which 9er players put out the required effort, to be retained for the 2025 season.
      B) It will also give us a chance to evaluate BP. Can he win
without all the 9er superstars,? Or is he a good QB, but not an elite QB?

    3. Thanks for the warm welcomes guys.

I have ran multipe draft sims on PFF and the players possibly available are
OT - Kelvin Banks, Josh Simmons, Aireontae Ersery and Wyatt Millum. all look to be decent zone run blockers with solid Pass Pro.

Edge - Nic Scourton, Mykell Williams, Shemar Stewart, I love Pierce but I think he is a bit light for this defense. This is a really deep class so I would likely pass on edge in favor of an OT if the value was close.

WR - Sucks but this is also a positon of need though I likely wouldn't go this route. Luther Burdon and Emeka Egbuka who I actually really like (I think he would be better than a healthy Aiyuk from day 1) but just feel like SF has to focus on the trenches.

DT- Mason Graham will be gone likely and I dont see another DT i would take in the top 20

Day is still chaulk full of edge rushers like Patrick Peyton, Princely Umanmielen, Kyle Kennard and Mike Green,
Others that I like on Day 2 are Nick Emmanwori Safety, Derrick Harmon DT, Mason Taylor TE, Tyler Booker Guard, Donavon Jackson Guard and Parker Brailsford Center.
I would love to draft a Center but I am not sold Kyle trusting a rookie of any kind and because its so important and not so expensive I made this the priority free agent SF goes after.

And thank you for your well thought out response. I would remind you we've had the OT conversation before, and I still don't see JL & KS drafting an OT in Rd #1, although the games TW has miss this season due to injuries, may force them to finally address his successor? Same with drafting a Center in Rd #2. I don't see them drafting an IOL that early, but would like to see JL & KS draft a Center in 2nd RD.
    * I would keep BP and let him compete with Darnold for starting QB.
Unless I could get a 1st, or High 2nd Rd. draft pick for him.
I like having a good backup QB making ~$1 Mil. in case of injury
    * Trade Deebo: I agree, but I would think they could get a 4th or 5th Rd draft pick for him? I also agree, If if they cut him do it after June 1st and save ~$15 Mil.
    * Aaron Banks is a F/A in 2025, I'd let him walk and hope as a 9er Rd #2 draft pick, they'd get a comp draft pick for him?
    .

    1. GEEP,
I just don't see any team giving up picks for Deebo and taking on his contract. He could be one hell of a kick returner but not for over 20 mill. This regime has drafted a OT with a 1st round pick McGlinchey, so it is not unheard off. I think they will give Ben Bartch a long look at G to see if he could replace Banks. If he can that would mean they only need to replace to O linemen
