The 49ers are surrounded by adversity and they're without their field commander. Also missing is the best player on the team, Nick Bosa. If they lose this game it's hard to see a path forward to the playoffs with a tough road game in Buffalo next week. It's a must win game with one hand tied behind their backs. No one to blame but themselves. Dick Charmin said it best: “You’ve gotta play like the rents due..And if you’re not playing like the rents due, you’re getting evicted and we’re going home.” One silver lining is Jordan Love's INT's (11-Ties last year in half the games) with a rate of 4.3%. Only 2 QBs have been worse: Will Levis and Anthony Richardson. The catch? The Niners will need to capitalize on any and all turnovers because the defense cannot be counted on to hold up for 4 quarters. George Kittle will be the key that unlocks this victory, 24-21. Go Niners!
The 49ers inactives:
Brock Purdy
Trent Williams
Nick Bosa
Kevin Givens
Jacob Cowing
Charvarius Ward
Khalil Davis
Brian Baldinger on Nick Sorensen:
ReplyDelete"Opposed to Steve Spagnuolo and some of these other teams in this league that are good blitzing teams, they just don't know how to get a free hit to the quarterback. They just don't dial it up. They don't overload, they don't disguise. So they're pretty bland in what they do."
Simple game plan. Attack on defense. Attack in the running game. Take no prisoners mentally.
We attack every play with 4 DL and that's one of the reasons they're gassed by the 4th qtr.
ReplyDeleteThey may not have any other option today. It's a must win
Deletescenario, pull out all the stops. The D could rest tomorrow.
To win this game the Niners need to stop making drive altering penalties in all three phases of the game and on each side of the ball. Secondly the Niners need to run the ball with wreck less abandum. Thirdly Brandon Allan needs to play errorless ball. Need a 28 point lead going into the fourth quarter.
ReplyDeleteAllen has the strongest arm of the 3. Maybe we throw it downfield early and often?
DeleteIf Packers are playing nine in the box - yup. Can't make mistakes, Niners defense can't be counted on.
DeleteCosell, etc. have been saying that when the receivers are open downfield, they still weren't being targetted.
DeleteScreen passes to Guerendo, yes. And play Mason, yes. And minimize Kittle's pass blocking. I'm hoping Allen is so surprising, that we have a QB controversy. HaHa. That's what the 9ers have been missing like old times.
My impression is that Allen is pretty immobile. If he's going to throw it downfield he will need good OL protection. OL is already questionable and with TW out.....
DeleteJay Glazer reported this morning that BPs shoulder "locked" up on him at Thurs. practice. They had given him an MRI earlier in the week and it had shown a "strain". At the time they felt he would be able to play today. After Thursday's practice they had him take a 2nd MRI, it came out the same. They have no idea how long he will be out. They have no idea what caused his shoulder to lock up and they have no idea whether his shoulder could be a chronic situation. Not good news.
ReplyDeleteThat's a lot of talent on the inactive list.
ReplyDeleteSurprised Cowing is inactive.
ReplyDeleteDog house part II? Sick of all the injuries....just not our year I guess.
Probably doesn't meet the blocking standards that KS demands from his WRs.
Deletestill in concussion protocol? Dumb not to use him even if he can't block.
DeleteWhoa the books are going to take bath today. Looking for a bright spot. The 9ers could end up with a top 12 pick.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely pathetic. The coaches brains must also be on IR.
ReplyDeleteWithstood the onslaught and have a chance to make it a game. Allen getting more comfortable with the speed of live bullets. Let's go get this win fellas!
ReplyDeleteIf we feed Mason, we win. It is so apparent. The zone runs with CMC are not working at the moment.
DeleteLike hot knife thru butter...
ReplyDeleteHopefully, I'm wrong, but there's no urgency on D and O. Deebo drops a pass he should make and leads to an INT and TD. Not throwing in to towel yet, but I have it in my hand.
ReplyDeleteWho will be named the next GM and Head Coach for the 49ers, asks 49ersUnderKSraBust.
ReplyDeleteWonder if it's better to have an experienced cast-off as a back-up QB -- one who has played extensively -- as opposed to a better system-fit QB who hasn't played in a while.
ReplyDeleteAnother strong draft and getting our players healthy for next season puts the 49ers right back in contention. The 49ers never got it going this year. It's now time to look to the 2025 draft.
ReplyDeleteThe West is a hot mess..... hopefully, Seattle holds on and then who knows............ get healthy for the playoffs, if lucky.
DeleteI'm not sure I've seen a worst coaching job directly following a Super Bowl appearance, but here we are! My season outlook moving forward called: "HOW KYLE SHANAHAN BROKE THE 49ERS in 2024" will be coming this next week, so stay tuned! SMH!
ReplyDeletediptown,
ReplyDeleteThe 49ers look completely out of sorts. It's not unrealistic for them to stay in the 15-18 draft range at this point.
Hire Ben Johnson to replace KS. Johnson will be hired by some team this year so why not us.
ReplyDeleteAre you ever going to stop this stupidity? Kyle is universally recognized by people in the profession as one of the best. You can repeat this stupidity ad nauseam but you won’t convince anyone.
DeleteHe's not a good HC. Every phase of the game was terrible today and that's on the HC.
DeleteWhy can't the genius design plays to have both CMC and Mason on the field at the same time? Have Mason replace Deebo.
DeleteMason is better than CMC. CMC's diminished versatility doesn't stress the defense anymore and that's his whole reason for being.
ReplyDeleteGuerendo's and Cowing's speed sits on the bench. And oh, Deebo now doubly stinks.
Allen wasn't atrocious. The only pass that pissed me off was that long throw to Conley that was thrown to the wrong side -- didn't lead Conley away from the defender.
George Kittle is an all-time great.
I am a total pessimist as to the rest of this season but with draft picks between #10 to 12 I think they could be okay next year. This upcoming off season is the most important in the KS/JL era. My biggest worry is BP. Is his injury going to be chronic. Is his Avg arm going to lose some zip? Or will his shoulder be okay and the 49ers pay him 65 mill and weaken the roster. Either way Deebo, Brendel, Hargrave and McKivitz have to go. If we can get them on cheap one year contracts they have to resign Greenlaw, Ward and Hufanga. Draft O linemen and D linemen and a TE.
ReplyDeleteagree wholeheartedly except for Hufanga. He stinks. Can you imagine how many of these guys would have already been gone under Bill Walsh who said better to cut a year early than a year late.
DeleteLee,
DeleteI think Walsh is the greatest coach of all time but he never coached in the salary cap era where sometimes its costs you more on the cap if you cut a player than to keep them.
OldCoach
DeleteCALL ME CRAZY IF YOU WANT...BUT.....
I would NOT extend BP after the 2024 season. The 9er FO can let him him play out the final year of his rookie contract (2025), before committing to a ~$60 Mil P/ year deal .
WHY WOULD / SHOULD THE 9ERS DO THAT?
Because BP is under contract through the 2025 season and
1) The 9ers can use the franchise tag to keep him and it
would cost them about the same. ~$60 Mil p/year.
2) It would give the 9ers the 2025 season to asses if his injury is chronic or not, as well as his ability to improve his timing with his receives, against teams that play man defense.
3) It's also possible the 9ers could sign a QB like Sam Darnold, who will be a free agent.
4) It would give theM the cap space to sign 9er players who will become F/A they'd like to keep, as well as sign F/A players from other teams.
GEEP,
DeleteI wonder if he would hold out if the 49ers wouldn't agree to negotiate with him? The last 4 49ers going into the last year of their contract have held out Deebo, Kittle, Bosa and Aiyuk. If they went out and signed Darnold to a 30 mill dollar contract they could trade BP. If they don't sign a BP replacement a holdout could ruin the season. I'm not sure that KS or JL have enough job security to have 2 bad seasons in a row.
OldCoach
Delete"I wonder if he would hold out"
* Tell me again what he gets paid per year? And remind me what it costs to rent in Silicon Valley? He could go home and live with his parents, but he's married now!
* "If they don't sign a BP replacement a holdout could ruin the season."
What part of a franchise tag lets him "hold out?" BTW. he will
NOT get paid if he holds out. Again, with his salary can he afford rent in Silicon Valley, as a married man!
How much would other NFL teams be willing to pay him if he demands a trade, with the poor season he's had this year?
* "I'm not sure that KS or JL have enough job security"
How much job security will JL and KS have if they pay BP $60 Mil. P/year and he has a chronic shoulder condition.
BP gets paid way more from his outside football commitments than his salary with the 49ers. Holding out will cost him very little.
DeleteGEEP,
DeleteWOW that is a lot of questions.
#1 Where does he live in the off season? Couldn't he just stay there? He could hold in, report to camp but not practice at least until the season starts.
#2 They can't franchise him until 26.
#3 There are always stupid teams willing to over pay for QBs IE the Raiders or the Browns.
#4 Lets hope by the start of next camp they will know whether his shoulder is okay or not.
OldCoach
Delete"WOW that is a lot of questions."
Yes OC, I agree. But unfortunately, there are many questions about multiple 9er players and what they're getting paid VS what they're worth.
* Just my opinion, but I doubt if several players don't agree to a pay cut, be traded, or get cut after June 1st. * 3 starters that are questionable if they're worth what they're being paid and may be forced to make that decision are DT Hargrave, WR Deebo and S Hufanga.
I can also think of several more players that have the rest of the 2024 season to answer questions about themselves.
* Is CMC still capable of playing at an all pro level?
* Is TW still capable of playing at an all pro level, but due to
injuries he misses too many games with nagging injuries?
* Kittle, while still a top TE capable of playing at an elite level,
is also often injured and forced to miss games.
Kyle obviously doesn't care about putting his best players on the field. Kyle doesn't care about keeping players fresh, and/or playing his fresher players. It's the same problems in week 12 as it was in week 1. It's an utter inability to adjust, in all 3 phases! It's a lack of execution. It's a lack of urgency. It's a lack of accountability. It's a lack of awareness. It's a lack of vision!
ReplyDeleteOnly Kyle could have a 3rd string QB be his primary backup QB. Nothing makes sense about Kyle's decision making. Nothing! I like Brock Purdy, but he's not elite. Kyle had an ascending QB in Sam Darnold in the house, and just let him walk without even batting an eye, or thinking twice. Remember the days when Kyle and John made having a quality 2nd string QB a priority.
Deletegood points. I'm agreeing with everyone tonight.
Delete"Kyle obviously doesn't care about putting his best players on the field."
DeleteWhich "best players" did Shanahan not play? Every player that won a starting job was on the field today save those that were injured. Not sure what you mean by your above comment.
Anonymous / AKA 49Reasons
ReplyDeleteThere is a REASON why you are NOT an NFL coach! Have you figured out WHY? Asking for a friend.......
Here's a stat that makes you wonder if KS is a good HC. KS is 1 and 29 when the 49ers enter the 4th Q down by 3+ points in the 4th Quarter. According to AI on Google this is a historically worst performance (which I take to mean is the worst performance ever). Now there are some other notable coaches who also have poor records, McVay, Harbaugh, Belichick. But there are many who are not on that list - Reid, Tomlin even McCarthy. If you have a good HC this is not a statistic you expect to see, especially not the worst ever.
ReplyDeleteWhen you add that to some head scratching moves like not continuing to run Mason after a 16 yard run yesterday you have to wonder. Then there is the ever present discussion of what mistakes will the special teams make today. I just can't recall a HC who is considered to be good having all of these issues. If you can't win a game entering the 4th quarter down by only a FG (especially with the talent the 49ers have and have had), then there's nothing left to say.
I'll just add one more thing. I can't remember watching a game where a team had back-to-back 12 men on the field penalties, with one of those wiping out an end-zone interception.
DeleteAccording to KS if the offense subs the Refs must give the D time to sub and get off the field. The Packers made a late substitution so the 49ers did the same but the refs didn't give the 49ers time to get off the field. KS said he was out of his mind screaming at the officials. GB saw it work once so they made another late substitution and the same thing happened again. He said they have contacted the NFL.
DeleteOK. But as pointed out by Dieter Kurtenbach:
Delete"But for your defense to follow up that flag with another 12-men penalty on the next play — despite a delay of more than a minute between plays — is simply inexcusable."
“That’s unacceptable … across the board,” linebacker Fred Warner said after the game. “It’s all of us not being on the same page.”
https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nfl/dieter-kurtenbach-12-confused-men-49ers-defensive-coordinator-s-error-speaks-volumes/ar-AA1uKH9X?ocid=hpmsn&cvid=0a29f47f95f6431cb8e30e3f902fbc90&ei=19
i will say it again this teams glaring weakness is the o-line and the d-line. no matter what Kyle believes you cant scheme pass protection and pass rush unless you have elite players at key positions and our elites are getting older and it is beginning to show
ReplyDeleteThe 49ers are not mathematically out of the playoffs. If the Cards, Seattle, and Rams lose a few games here in the stretch run and 49ers finish at 9-8 they could take the division. There's still a small flicker of light.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteFeliciano won't be solving any OL issues this year. Sounds like he had a setback and won't get activated.
ReplyDeleteWelcome to the 2024 season of pain.
ReplyDeletePer Shanahan,
ReplyDelete"But you also know, you look at the whole NFC picture, and if you don't win the division, 10-7 is not guaranteed to get in as a Wild Card by any means this year. So I think everyone understands completely, outside and inside, what the situation is. That's why that Seattle game (in Week 11) was so tough of a loss, and that's why last night was even worse.
So we know what we've got ahead of us. We know exactly what that playoff situation is."
Can the 49ers muster up 5 more wins?
AES,
DeleteWould you rather see them win 8, 9 or 10 games and not make the playoffs or win 6 or 7 games and get the #10 to 12 draft picks?
AES
Delete"Can the 49ers muster up 5 more wins?"
Better question: Can the 9ers muster up 2 more wins against the Bears and Rams?
OldCoach
I will take the #10 to 12 draft picks.
That's not an easy question, Coach. Personally, I prefer winning. Because, the 49ers have done a better than expected job in drafting at a lower end of the draft over the years. It also depends on which players provide the best value in the mid to late rds.
DeleteOC, until they can't make the playoffs, I want them playing like their still trying to. If they end up 10-7 but miss out, so be it.
DeleteTanking for higher draft picks is what loser organisations do. If they start doing that, honestly, time to clean house.
Scooter,
DeleteI wasn't saying they should tank. I was asking AES as a fan would he rather watch them win some games that won't get them to the playoffs or watch them lose and get a much better draft picks. I think coaches whose teams tank aren't coaches for long.
I don't know of any true football fan who'd want their team not to win every game they play -- whether they are 0-16 or in the Super Bowl.
DeleteMood,
DeleteI believe that everyone one this site is a "true" football fan.
Puni going in for a MRI. Banks is in the concussion protocol. Can we finally stop with the KS should still be winning sillyness?
ReplyDeleteOldCoach
DeleteWhen it rains, it pours? Who said anything about a FLOOD?
More good news the 49ers are awaiting results of D. Lenoir's MRI
ReplyDeleteLogging into Google is against my principles, but just once, because Thanksgiving's coming, I'll contribute some cranberry sauce.
ReplyDeleteFor the "Faithful"...
Historical chance (going back to 2013) of making playoffs with:
8 Regular Season wins = 9% (3 of 33)
9 Regular Season wins = 41% (18 of 44)
10 Regular Season wins = 88% (29 of 33)
11 Regular Season wins = 100% (31 of 31)
And for the "Contrarians"...
Again going back to 2013, exactly 5 Regular Season wins earned following-year first round picks between No. 5 and No. 9, with 5th, 6th or 7th picks in the draft being most common.
OldCoach,
ReplyDelete"I wasn't saying they should tank. I was asking AES as a fan would he rather watch them win some games that won't get them to the playoffs or watch them lose and get a much better draft picks. I think coaches whose teams tank aren't coaches for long."
I knew that your question wasn't an attempt to steer me one way or another.
I'm always about winning. But, I've also learned the hard way that drafting high does not guarantee a blue chip player. We all learned this 4yrs ago in drafting Trey Lance. Btw, I remember a few people here strongly touting Zac Wilson who went pick before TL. I believe that 49ers already have a 2025 board ready with
3-5 backup possibilities if the guy they target is off the board.
Yep, higher draft picks don't guarantee better players. No point worrying about where you might draft until after the season is done and dusted.
DeleteI was one of those pushing hard for Lance. I guess we can't be right all of the time. I would be happy with 50%
DeleteAgree. But I like putting together a wishlist of players who might be available to fill some 49ers roster needs. While I'm far from putting a wrap on this season, I've envisioned someone like TE Tyler Warren as a possible 49ers draft pick, hopefully in the 3rd rd.
ReplyDeleteNothing wrong with looking at potential draft prospects. Just saying there's no point getting too caught up with where the team will draft during the season. Good players can and will be found anywhere in the draft, and bad players can and will get drafted high.
DeletePerspective. The 49ers had 2 defensive starters last Sunday who also started against GB last year in the playoffs
ReplyDeleteCoach,
ReplyDeleteAt what point does Sorensen receive critique for the defense? Even Steve Wilks had a top 10 defense last year. Wilks was fortunate not have any major injuries on defensive except for Hufanga.
With the 49ers entrenched in this season of pain, does Sorensen get a grace pass?
AES,
DeleteIf Robert Saleh is available no. Actually after Wilks one and done I don't see Sorenson coming back
Yup. Saleh may have to become a very successful Dcord for a few years before getting another shot at head coaching again.
ReplyDeleteAlright........ may not be a popular choice, BUT, Dennis Allen was pretty consistent in NO for a number of years......... not sure who else is available w that amount of experience and success. BB wants a head job... I am not saying Sorenson is the problem though as I would leave that to people breaking down tape.
ReplyDeleteDip,
DeleteHow about Saleh?
I liked Saleh as a players coach, but I wasn't the biggest fan of him as I thought he was slow to make adjustments and not aggressive enough- my $.02
DeleteSomething I'd like to understand is what is it Saleh and Ryans did that Sorensen is doing differently? I feel like Saleh was much better at making adjustments mid game, especially changing up how the DL aligned and played when opponents were starting to get their run game going. Ryans D just seemed to be more consistent.
ReplyDeleteI do wonder how much just comes down to the talent on the roster.
Scooter,
DeleteOne thing I do know is Saleh's defenses tackled. Was it coaching or talent? I don't know but I trust KS to know the difference.
Warner playing with a fractured ankle since week 4. "ouch" This is one many reason I don't give up on this team.
ReplyDeleteAt practice today BP did a little light throwing. KNBR described it as "lobbing" the ball around.
ReplyDeleteAt this rate, I suspect he may not play against the Bills to prevent any further aggravation to his shoulder. It might come down to a game day decision.
ReplyDeleteTBD
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone
ReplyDeleteHappy Thanksgiving!

AES / OldCoach & Everyone on the blog
ReplyDeleteHere is wishing everyone has an enjoyable thanksgiving and is fortunate enough to spend some quality time with family and
friends.
GEEP,
ReplyDeleteYes Sir!
How do you go from centers like Richburg and Mack to Brendel and think that that is adequate?
ReplyDeleteBrendel was adequate for a bit (though nothing more than that). But he's been terrible this year. The knee issues he had in camp/ pre-season appear to have taken their toll.
DeleteDefinitely need to upgrade this offseason.
Who was the last center the 49ers drafted?
DeleteOC, there is apparently meant to be a few decent FA options this offseason. Wouldn't surprise me if they go that route for center rather than draft.
DeleteScooter,
DeleteI see the 49ers going that route as well. They have done very well with following that mindset. Richburg, Mack, and even Jonathan Goodwin (Harbaugh era) before them were all FAs. It's to early to know which Centers might become FAs but I'm sure the 49ers will have their ears to the ground on any news.
Brendel was adequate enough last year to get to a SB. F/A Center, Zakelj and Nugent and may the best man win.
DeleteOldCoach
ReplyDeleteCorrect me if I'm wrong, but I believe the last O-Center the 9ers drafted was in 2014 draft: Rd #3, C Marcus Martin, USC ?
I assume you don't consider Zakelj a center they drafted because he played OT in college? If we exclude Zakelj then yes, I believe it was Martin.
DeleteScooter
Delete"I assume you don't consider Zakelj a center they drafted because he played OT in college?"
You are correct, that was OC's question.
Last comment was me...forgot to log in.

DeleteBryce Foster, Center from Tex A&M: He's s a late day three prospects, but a player I'd like to see the 9ers draft and let Foerster develop.

Don't mind drafting a guy to develop, but that won't fix the problem next season.
DeleteJermaine Terry II, TE, Oregon St., I'd give him a strong look on day 2.

ReplyDeleteTE J. Terry II is a local bay area kid, born and raised in Richmond, CA. and attended Kennedy High.

TB honest, I thought he had gone to Cal. and wasn't aware he was

9ers likely to play Bills in heavy snow during storm in Week 13
ReplyDeleteHeavy snow is expected in Erie County, New York, this weekend, including Sunday night when the AFC East-leading Bills host the 49ers for their primetime "Sunday Night Football" matchup.
Sunday morning will see temperatures upward of 30 degrees with snow that will transition to snow showers during the afternoon, with snow accumulating one to three inches. During the evening, temps will drop to 24 degrees with mostly cloudy conditions and snow showers, with snow accumulations about less than one inch, per The Weather Channel.
Kick-off is set for 5:20 p.m. PT.

ReplyDelete49ers vs. Bills injury report: Purdy, Mooney Ward set to play per Matt Maiocco
ReplyDelete* Quarterback Brock Purdy will return to the 49ers' starting lineup Sunday after missing one game with a right shoulder injury.
“The fact he’s going to play means he’s healthy,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said on Friday, shortly before the team departed for its Week 13 game at the Buffalo Bills.
* Cornerback Charvarius Ward also will play Sunday after sitting out since the 49ers' Oct. 27 game against the Dallas Cowboys while he mourned the loss of his daughter, Amani Joy, who passed away unexpectedly on Oct. 28 just shy of her second birthday.
However, the 49ers closed the door on several other key players from appearing in Sunday’s game.
* Defensive end Nick Bosa, left tackle Trent Williams, left guard Aaron Banks, cornerback Deommodore Lenoir and defensive tackle Jordan Elliott were all ruled out.
* The 9ers opened the practice window for linebacker Dre Greenlaw this week after he sustained a torn Achilles in the Super Bowl. He will not be activated to play against the Bills.
https://sports.yahoo.com/49ers-vs-bills-injury-report-223818585.html
Perhaps the 49ers want to hold back TW, Bosa, Banks, Deo, Elliott for one final hail mary run after the Bill's game. Seattle and Cards are up against tough competition this weekend. It's a big order, but if Sea, and Cards lose, the 49ers just need to win out for a shot at the playoffs. I'm still holding out hope.
ReplyDeleteAES,
ReplyDeleteI admire your positive outlook.
Coach,
ReplyDeleteIt's not looking good for them. Call me crazy, but until they are mathematically out, I'm remaining hopeful.
Same.
DeleteThis team can beat anybody to include themselves. They still have a chance for the playoffs but...
DeleteNo point giving up on them. At their best they are one of the best in the NFL, and only 1 game back in the NFC West. But boy it's going to be tough.
DeletePer, Maiocco,
