The Bears defense is ranked #5 against the pass, #22 against the run. This should be a Guerendo workout. We saw him at practice off to the side by himself with paper in hand going through some mental reps of specific plays. Shanahan will need to establish his run game and stick to it to have any chance of winning. Without CMC the onus will be on George Kittle to defeat man coverage behind the Bears loaded box to stop the run. The good news defensively for the 49ers is the overall #1 pick Caleb Williams is struggling near the bottom in QBR at 27th while Purdy is 7th. Williams has been sacked 49 times! Even without Bosa there should be opportunities for this defense to make more noise in the backfield than they have the last 2 games. If the 49ers can keep Williams from making splash plays either with his legs or off schedule they'll have a chance to win a tight game. 23-20 San Francisco!
49ers inactives: QB Josh Dobbs (3rd QB) T Trent Williams (heel) G Aaron Banks (concussion) DE Nick Bosa (hip/oblique) LB Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles CB Rock Ya-Sin RB Israel Abanikanda
The 49ers begin their big RUN today. Winning the next 4 of 5 (loss against Detroit) and a little from losses by divisional teams, could be the formula to make the POs.
ReplyDeleteIf Bosa is back against the Lions we will win the game.
DeleteMatt Maiocco said he “doesn’t think Deebo Samuel is going anywhere in 2025” on KNBR which lines up with what I've been saying amidst the noise to the contrary.
ReplyDeleteHe costs too much to get rid imo. While I'd love to move off of him. Given, you'd need to pay him and his replacement it's a costly proposition. Perhaps you could move him post June 1 but it's highly unlikely.
DeletePurdy has to pull the trigger and not hesitate on that pass.
ReplyDeleteC'mon!
We back!
ReplyDeleteTHE 9ERS ABILITY TO DEFEAT THE BEARS DEPENDS ON:
ReplyDeleteON DEFENSE:
* Make the bears one dimensional. Tackle RB Swift and stop the Bears from running the ball.
* Make the Bears QB, Caleb Williams, beat them.
* Shut down Bears WR's JD Moore, Odunze, Alen & TE Kmet.
THE OFFENSE:
* Stop the mistakes. No penalties and no turn overs!
* Run Guerendo behind Puni and McKivitz,(B & C GAPS), against a Bears stacked LOS
* BP must have success getting his receivers, Jennings, Pearsall
Kittle and Deebo, the ball against man coverage. Then Score in the Red Zone!
* KS must be successful at get Deebo involved in the offense.
Wow. Niners of old.
ReplyDeleteAny news on Guerendo?
ReplyDeleteOC
Delete49ers not sure yet as to the extent of RB Isaac Guerendo’s foot injury. Shanahan says "X-rays didn’t show anything. Initial suspicion is a foot sprain but more testing to come tomorrow."
It's still a major problem, as a high-ankle sprain can take a month to recover from and Guerendo is already the team’s third-choice RB.
I don't think he can play on a sprained foot but I guess we'll see. Maybe Anaconda gets some carries.
ReplyDeleteIF IT WERN'T FOR BAD LUCK, THE 9ERS WOULDN'T HAVE ANY LUCK AT ALL!!!!!
ReplyDelete49ers 9-8 model to playoffs:
ReplyDelete4-way tie needed, no 3-way tie
-SEA lose 1 of next 3 to GB, MIN, CHI and lose to LAR
-ARI win next 3 vs CAR, NE, and LAR, lose to SF
-LAR lose Thurs., W @ Jets, L week 17 to ARI, W vs SEA
-SF can lose 1 to MIA or DET, must win both div. games
Just win out. No more excuses. If it isn't enough to make the playoffs so be it.
Delete9ers may have dodged a bullet?
ReplyDeleteGuerendo not concerned about foot injury from 49ers' win over Bears
* “We are not sure, possible foot sprain,” Shanahan said. “X-rays for sure didn’t show anything, so we will have to look into it a little more tomorrow.”
* Guerendo spoke in the locker room after the game and seemed less concerned than his coach.
“Everything is fine,” Guerendo said. “They were just being cautious. We got a quick turn around this week so just making sure we are good to go.”

Niners didn't beat themselves for a change. Purdy looked more aggressive than in games past. He played like an authoritarian man on a mission. In years past he had nothing to lose as expectations were minimal. A whole lot of learning isn't obtained by having success but by having difficulties and most of Purdy's career has been met with success. I suspect next year will be Purdy's year of sustained excellence.
ReplyDeleteUC,
ReplyDelete"In years past he had nothing to lose as expectations were minimal."
Good point and I agree in part. But the expectations increased exponentially after his rookie season because of his great play. For my part, I still believe he is a very capable QB. And while there are some areas he needs to work on as I've noted before, he is still the only QB that gives the 49ers the best chance to win. The Bears aren't world beaters, but proving he could win with so many key players out only proves that he is capable of winning when the odds are against him. The days of lower expectations no longer apply. And I believe that no one knows this better than Purdy himself.
AES
DeleteWhile I'll give credit to BP, when credit is due, I'd point out:
A) Jennings, Kittle and Guerendo carried the load on offense.
B) Either the Bears D-line is worse than expected, or the 9er
O-line played better than I expected?
C) Getting Hufanga, Lenoir and D-linman Elliot back from IR made a difference..
D) And 9er D sacked rookie QB Caleb Williams 7 times.
Purdy made throws that played a large part in the victory. He may have had his best game of the season. Sure, other players showed up. But Purdy deserves any kudos he receives, imho.
DeleteIt was nice to see the 49ers actually play like we know they can, even if it was the Bears. Also a little frustrating knowing they could and should have been playing like that well before now.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the 49ers need to win out for them to have any chance at the playoffs. With that being said I think Thursdays Rams game is the most important of the last 4 games. It is their chance to prove they can beat a quality team and prove that yesterday wasn't an anomaly. If they can beat L.A. they will have a short bye before Miami. The next big question will be by the time they play Det will the Lions be using load management. I think they will and the 49ers can beat a Lions team that's not playing all their starters 4 quarters. It all comes down to Thurs night. It will be BPs biggest regular season game in his career.
ReplyDeleteWin out and they probably get that 7th seed. Wasn't that the seed Mike Shanahan's Broncos team was when they won one of their SB's?
DeleteYeah...only game we can afford to lose is Miami. Have to win the rest of the conf/div game to have a shot at the playoffs, which seems highly unlikely.
DeleteCompletely agree.
DeleteThough, I just don't think SF is that good. Currently, in most games they will be at a loss in the trenches on both sides of the ball. And in years past... This was not the case on D... And on O they had so many playmakers it limited what defenses could do. That is no longer the case.
Shemar Stewart, DL, Texas A&M, 6'6 290 lbs., is another player the 49ers should have interest in round 2.
ReplyDeleteOldCoach
ReplyDeleteI would agree with you that the 9ers must beat the Rams, but I'd disagree the Lions may be "using load management!" against the 9ers!
The Lions are 12W - 1L. Both the Vikings and Eagles are 11W - 2L.
The Lions play the Bills on 12/15 and the Vikings Jan 5 , 2025 and
play the 9ers on 12/30. The Lions will, IMO, be playing for home field advantage, even if they beat the Bills on 12/15. They'll play to beat the 9ers, as they play the Vikings on 1/5/2025.
Anyone know how Burford graded out yesterday. The O line seemed to be opening up some holes.
ReplyDeleteI think Burford looks much more comfortable at LG and had a solid game.
DeleteHe seemed to pass the eye test, for me. But, I haven't seen any official grades to validate this.
ReplyDeleteGood game yesterday. Outstanding D in the first half.
ReplyDeleteNot sure if the D can keep up the momentum against the Rams. Much better HC and QB than da bears.
Of all the quarterbacks this season to play the Bears, Purdy had the best passer rating.
ReplyDeleteNew Hargraves restructure points to a post June release next year. They reduced Hargraves’ base salary from $19.9 million to $2.1 million, dropping Hargraves salary cap number from $28.105 million to $10.305 million in the process. The original cost to cut Hargraves would have been either $24.86 million on the cap or $28.105 million during free agency if using the June 1. This will allow the team to designate Hargraves as a post June 1 release, count for just $10.3 million on the cap during free agency and then have it drop to $8.6 million in 2025 and $17.485 million deferred to 2026 if he's still hurt. He does guarantees in the contract if the team does not opt to release him. The $2.1 million base salary ensures that Hargraves, who is currently injured, will qualify for the maximum injury protection benefit allowed by the CBA if he is still injured after the season. That would count for $1.26 million on the cap and I included that in the cap charges above.
ReplyDeleteAll but guarantees a release. This wasn't converting salary to bonus, this was cutting salary
DeleteThis was an interesting move. I am not sure what Hargraves got for this move?
DeleteHe was so expensive prior to this, that SF almost couldn't afford to cut him. They would only have saved something like 2 million but would expedite a payout of something like 24M. The problem is they would have also needed to pay his replacement if they wanted to cut him.
Can someone explain what he got?
"Not struggling at all, just not getting the ball!!!!"
ReplyDeleteDeebo replying to Lynch's comment that Deebo has been struggling.
Imho, Deebo's snipping has a little truth to it. But then again, he's not getting as open downfield as he has in the past. Also, is he starting to hear foot steps causing him to cover-up an instant before the ball arrives? Whatever the case, Deebo isn't doing himself any favors by his snipping especially at a time when they should be razor sharp in focusing on a playoff push.
Deebo is a guy I would be letting go end of season. He's one of the biggest culprits of not playing "with desperation", as Kittle puts it. He tends to play in fits and spirts.
DeleteIt was Deebo's block that facilitated Guerendo's 2nd TD.
DeleteAgree.
ReplyDeleteI think Deebo's play has been affected by injuries and health as well as KS (until this last week) inability to scheme players open and lastly (until last week) BP taking a step back. The reason I think they should trade/release Deebo is they already have a player who can fill his role. CMC taking Deebo's role will lengthen his career and Mason and Guerendo will make a great 2 headed RB combo. That would leave them with Aiyuk, Jennings and CMC at WR. Mason and Guerendo at RB and Kittle at TE. Then they could use their draft capital and free agency signings to build their O and D line
ReplyDeleteCoach,
ReplyDeleteThere's no debate that CMC can catch. But as a WR, I'm not sure. CMC is still a great RB when healthy and changing positions may not be a suitable answer for him and the offense, imho.
AES,
DeleteDeebo has never been a typical WR. CMCs role has been very close to the same as Deebos since he joined the team. He is in motion and he catches bubble screens. He lines up in the back field then shifts to a flanker. I really don't see that much of an adjustment. It would likely lessen his touches especially between the tackles which could lengthen his career. While Mason/Guerendo are not at the same level as CMC as a running back Mason was leading the league in rushing yards. Trading Deebo would save a chunk against the cap and help in the draft. If they can't trade him releasing him after June 1 will still help out with the cap. As to Deebo being KSs favorite (as Razor brought up) unless they win out and make the playoffs I see Jed having a little to say about the future direction of the team. Especially if JL also would like to trade/release Deebo. imho
Deebo is Shanahan's favorite player. He won't be going anywhere. Not next year.
ReplyDeleteFavoritism is a luxury no head coach should aspire to. It could potentially damage trust and isolate other players in the locker room.
ReplyDeleteHa! Haven't seen any evidence of that, but thanks for the laugh.
ReplyDeleteWell, it wasn't meant as a joke. But if you found the comment amusing good for you.
ReplyDeleteIf we haven't seen any evidence of your serious comment regarding trust and isolation issues in the locker room the past 5 years, why wouldn't I find it amusing? It's pretty much been common knowledge how tight both Samuel and Shanahan are and that he's his favorite player.
ReplyDelete2nd round candidate: Mike Green, Leo, Marshall 6'4 248 lbs.
ReplyDeleteRazor
DeleteThe more video I watch on Green, the better I like him! And with 17 sacks and a 4.57s 40, he's moving up draft boards. I list him as a mid 2nd Rd draft pick. He'll need to bulk up
and get stronger before becoming a 3 down player.
I never said that there was an issue in the 49ers locker room. My comment was a blanket comment that covered all head coaches.
ReplyDeleteFair enough
ReplyDeleteRazor,
ReplyDeleteWhat's your take on tomorrow's game? Are the Rams the team that beat the Bill's real, or just caught the Bill's on an off day?

ReplyDeleteOUT for Thursday vs. Rams:
ReplyDeleteLT Trent Williams (ankle)
S Malik Mustapha (chest, shoulder)
Questionable:
DE Nick Bosa (hip, oblique)
RB Isaac Guerendo (foot)
LB Dre Grenlaw (Achilles)
DT Khalil Davis (knee)
Questionables usually play. As for this game, I expect a shootout. First one to 35 wins I think.
ReplyDeleteAES
ReplyDeleteI can't speak for Razor...BUT.... IMO, the Rams are who they looked like against the Bills, as long as Rams QB Stafford, WR's Puka Nacua and Cooper Kupp are healthy and their RB can keep the 9er defense honest.
QUESTIONS THAT WILL GET ANSWERED:
* Will BP show he's more than a game manager and score with
Rams QB Stafford?
* Is RB Guerendo is good to go?
* Will Deboo decide to stop the TALK, do the WALK and score?
* Will DE Gross-Matos, Yetur sack Rams QB Stafford?
I think this is BPs come to Jesus game.
Delete
DeleteOldCoach
I'd agree the Rams game will be BP's come to Jesus game,
but IMO, the next 4 games against the Rams, Miami, Lions
and Arizona will all be come to Jesus games for BP.
* Seattle plays GB, the Vikings, Bears and Rams. I see Seattle
losing to GB, the Vikings and the Rams.
* If the 9ers win out, they win the division and make the playoffs. BP collects his come to Jesus $55 - $60 Mill. Will I wake up and realize I was just dreaming? TBD!
Rams CB Cobie Durant has been ruled OUT for Thursday Night's game against the 49ers per @RapSheet which likely means wec ould get our first look at Emmanuel Forbes. If so, expect Shanahan to attack him like he did last year; 7 targets, 4 catches, 89 yards, 1 TD.
ReplyDeleteThe Rams are much more healthier than the 49ers which that in itself should favor them. But rivalry games are always tough to gauge and besides the urgency the 49ers have to win, the other incentive is that they just like beating the Rams.
ReplyDeleteJaylon Moore vs Jared Verse will tell us how much he's improved.
ReplyDeleteBad news for the 49ers. If all of their injuries wasn't enough it looks like rain in Santa Clara Thurs. We all know how BP s***s the bed in the rain. Hopefully it will just be light rain.
ReplyDelete
