The 49ers trade for Khalil Davis for a 2026 7th round pick. He has 10 TFL in 2 years. With Gross-Matos due back next week, and 10 DL already on the roster, it'll be interesting to see where he lands in the pecking order.

They are going to have to release two players first. I wonder who. For those who are saying they only gave up a 7th. I am damn glad they didn't trade away a 7th before the 2022 draft.
ReplyDeleteI published that at the end of the last blog so after reading what you said I thought I would repost it.
DeleteI just hope the Niners didn't give up too much. Maybe an early round pick might have been better. The Niners do very well in the late rounds and only so so with the early rounds.

49ers making another defensive addition: San Francisco is bringing back veteran safety Tashaun Gipson and signing him to their practice squad, per source. Gipson spent the 2022-‘23 seasons with San Francisco.
* IMO, DT is 9er #1 need. The 2025 draft has an abundance of DT's.
ReplyDelete* My 1st choice would be DT Deone Walker, Kentucky. Unfortunately,
he may be gone before the 9ers are on the board in Rd #1. * DT Tyleik Williams, Ohio St. would be my 2nd choice.
* DT Derrick Harmon, Oregon would be my 3rd choice.
Geep,
DeleteI would take a flier on Watson the 449lbs DT at Fla. Late 7th Rd or UDFA.
Desmond Watson, DT Florida
Deletehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desmond_Watson
* 40 Time = 5.67s, but he can squat 720 lbs and bench 520 lbs
Watson is a senior and had played in 38 games over three seasons prior to the Gators’ season opener against Miami. He plays here and there and has had 43 tackles during his college career.
* To say the 2023 campaign didn't quite go according to plan for defensive lineman Desmond Watson would arguably be an understatement.
Ahead of his junior season with the Gators, Watson, one of the few remaining holdovers recruited by the previous coaching staff led by Dan Mullen – witnessed UF add depth to the interior of the defensive line, bringing in Cam Jackson and Caleb Banks to compete for starting roles. Suddenly, experience had entered the room, and Watson would have to contend with his newfound teammates, along with recent additions via the high school ranks, to continue his ascension in Gainesville.
Ultimately, Watson, who'd started 10 games in 2022, saw his role markedly decrease due to the additions in the room, along with a notable other reason: Watson's conditioning, at nearly 450 pounds, was in need of improvement, and the Gators couldn't rely on him to play a significant number of snaps.
Geep,
DeleteI just wonder what a 349 lbs Watson would look like. A year in an NFL weight room along with all the weight loss meds that are available might turn him into a monster.
OldCoach
DeleteIt might turn him into a monster? Maybe a cookie monster?
Dropping 100 pounds (449 to 349 pounds), IMO, would still leave him too slow to be effective and you have to wonder
how motivate he'd be to keep the weight off?
I believe the operative sentence is..."the Gators couldn't rely on him to play a significant number of snaps!"
ZaDarius Smith to the Lions for a 5th and 6th rd pick. I believe this makes the Lions the prohibitive favorite in the NFC. Anyone here think the 9ers should have traded for him?
ReplyDeleteHow do you figure? They added Smith and subtracted Hutchinson. If the Lions can't run against the 49ers, Goff isn't gonna beat them.
DeleteCoach,
DeleteI posted early last week that I have Lions v Ravens in the SB. Smith to Lions may now fortify the my prediction.
I still believe Detroit's inability to consistently stop the run will be their downfall- time will tell.........
DeleteI don't think they needed to make a move. They have Gross-Matos coming back, and Givens missed w a groin and probably fine for depth....... I like what Sam O has shown w his size and motor..... Anderson off the ps also has upside. At this point, they're really only missing Hargrave and Davis adds the big butt inside they may need occasionally. I think the issue w Campbell and not having Winters (eh) or Robinson (acl) able to supplant hurts the most- hopefully, Greenlaw returns soon, as anticipated....... Detroit still has issues stopping the run.
ReplyDeleteAgreed.
DeleteMy opinion is based on how Detroit has looked so far (with Hutchinson, Smith isn't Hutchinson but he is pretty damn good) and how GB/SF/Wash/Minn have looked so far.
DeleteYou are right Coach. All we have to go on is what we've seen from these teams so far. But there's another half of football and anything can happen. I still see the 49ers making the playoffs and hopefully they will go deep.
ReplyDeleteDeeper than deep
DeleteSome talking heads have said that Hargrave might be available if the 49ers have a deep PO run. That would be a big plus if he's ready to play. Hargrave, Collins, and now K. Davis makes for a formidable D-interior line and give the team fresh players in the 4th QTR.
ReplyDeleteYGM practice window has been opened and looks to be returning ahead of schedule.
ReplyDeleteThe 49ers also signed Russell Gage, WR.
ReplyDeleteAll the talk about the 9ers making the playoffs is, IMO, putting the cart before the horse!
ReplyDelete* The 9ers are currently in 3rd place in the division. To win the
division, the 9ers need to win the following games.
* Week 10: The 9ers have to beat TB at TB, the Jets have to beat Arizona at Arizona and Miami has to beat the Rams at the Rams.
"IF" that happens, it will put the 9ers in first place in the division.
Week 11: The 9ers need to beat Seattle at Levi as the Rams should beat NE at NE. Arizona has a bye.
Week 12: The 9ers have to beat GB at Lambeau! Arizona should beat
the Seahawks at Seattle and the Eagles should beat the Rams in LA.
* WEEK 13: The 9ers have to beat the Bills at Buffalo and the Vikings beat Arizona at the Vikings.
Week 14: Seattle plays Arizona at Arizona, who wins should't affect the lead, as long as the 9ers beat the Bears at Levi.
Week 15: The 9ers have to beat the Rams at Levi, as Arizona should
beat NE at Arizona and keep the 9ers in first place.
Week16: The 9ers need to beat the Dolphins in Miami, as Arizona
should beat the Panthers at the Panthers and the Jets should beat
the Rams at the Jets.
Week 17: Seattle should beat the Bears at the Bears, while Arizona
beats the Rams at the Rams. The 9ers will need to beat the Lions at
Levi to win the division over Arizona.
* Three critical games the 9ers must win to make the playoffs
Week 12: 9ers need to beat GB at GB
Week 13: The 9ers need to beat the Bills at Buffalo
Week 17: The 9ers need to beat the Lions at Levi.
Geep,
ReplyDeleteIf you were a betting man would you bet on the 9ers winning those 3 games?
OldCoach
DeleteThat would depend on the 9er players coming off IR, being capable of playing at close to the performance level prior to being injured.
* If that were the case, the 9er should beat GB at GB if the weather is descent. If it's -20 degrees, blowing wind and snow...then NO.
* The same with the 9ers beating Buffalo at Buffalo.
* With the 9ers playing the Lions at Levi, based on how
the Lions are playing...."IF" the 9ers beat GB and Buffalo,
then I would give them a 3 point home field advantage.
* Lets see how well the 9ers travel, playing TB at TB!
There is good news and there is bad news. First the good, CMC came out of his first full practice feeling "great" there will likely be no limitations on him Sun. The bad is C. Ward will very likely not be available this Sun. He is away from the team this week attending his daughter's funeral.
ReplyDeleteOldCoach
ReplyDelete* Add Juan Jennings return to the 9er good news....
* If CMC is close to 100%? The 9ers Red zone problems should be better.

Ravens are waiving DE Yannick Ngakoue, per source. The Ravens want to re-sign him to their practice squad should he clear waivers.
Razor
Delete* If memory serves me, Baltimore did the same thing the last time they played the Bengals (Oct 6th)? They activated him on 10/5 and then returned him to the PS on 10/7
I know they also activated Ngakoue on 10/12 for their game against Washington (10/13) and then returned him to the PS on 10/14.
* With all the 9er injuries at the time, I checked his salary ($1.210 Mil), to see if the 9ers could afford to sign him.
Lombardi, is reporting (per NFL.com) that KKR Moody will be back this Sunday.
ReplyDeleteAES,
DeleteIs that good news or bad news? The replacements are 100% on FGs.
Moody is getting paid Starter money and if he's ready to play, I can't see the team making any drastic moves with him. If Moody can't produce upon his return Lynch now has KKRs that can call.
DeleteAES
DeleteThe 9ers need all the healthy players they can get to win and
keep pace with Arizona. After flying cross country, they play a 10 AM game against TB. They need a win to keep pace with Arizona, if they hope play in the post season.
The 49ers have not been at full strength since their season opener. Obviously, we can grade them according with what we've seen so far. With players ready to return, I'm inclined to believe that they will be stronger heading down the stretch run. I expect them to win the division. And, just make the playoffs, baby! lol.
DeleteThe replacements have done their job nicely on FGs, but Moody has the stronger leg and is also going well this year with just one FG missed.

ReplyDeleteAES / OR ANYONE
DeleteSo who steps up for the 9ers, in the 2nd half of 2024?
* Greenlaw is the wild card. When does he come back? Does he still play like the guy who gives the 9er D the punch-you-in-the-face attitude they need?
* Yetur Gross-Matos had his practice window opened. He was the trendy preseason pick to be this year’s Key and Omenihu. While he could still prove to be a valuable addition, there isn’t much to go off after missing much of this season.
* Calling Floyd’s season “bad” isn’t fair or accurate, he is averaging under a 1/2 sack p/game and his pressure rate is underwhelming but consistent.
Floyd has found ways to make enough plays against the run and pass to validate bringing him in. Will he get better in the 2nd half as the season? Floyd has consistently had ~10 sacks in the past four years and sits at three now. So, maybe? But, we haven’t seen it.
HERE IS MY PICK FOR WHO STEPS UP FOR THE 9ERS:
* Sam Okuyainonu is a 26 Y/O on a 1 year contract. Breaking out in the 2nd half, feels like the most 9er thing possible to happen. If we project the offense to improve their scoring with the reinforcements coming back, Okuyaninou’s snap count should continue to rise, as should his opportunities to sack the QB.
Okuayinonu’s quickness, athleticism, and tenacity make him an easy selection. He’s a pain in opponents Butt. Best of all, Okuayinonu plays through the whistle. When he doesn’t win initially and his effort doesn’t stop. It’s how he had a sack in the game against Dallas. Sam O is winning at a better clip than Floyd this season and is the player the Niners hoped they were getting when they signed Gross-Matos. His win rates this season :
Bosa - 19.2%
Okouayinonu - 12.2%
Gross-Matos - 10.4%
Floyd - 7.9%
* IMO, Sam O has favorable matchups against guards who aren’t as athletic as him. Sorensen recognized this midway through the season and the 49ers' pass rush has benefited from the move. That won’t change in the 2nd half of the season.

I believe that barring anymore injuries Jennings will be a big boost to the WR core. CMC, Mason and Guerrendo will cause headaches on opposing Ds.
DeleteHufanga can't be counted out even with good play from Mustafa. If Greenlaw is ready by mid December this team could win the division and become a feared team entering the playoffs. I'm feeling pretty good about the 49ers chances right now.
AES
DeleteI agree....But we were already aware of what they could contribute to the 9ers being successful in the 2nd half of the season.
I was asking who was someone new? Someone we were not already aware of, that could make a difference in the
9ers winning the division in the 2nd half of the season.
If I had to pick someone new on offense. Someone who'd help the 9ers win the division, then I'll go with Ricky Pearsall.
Yes, Pearsall. And I will add Guerrendo. Sammy O has shown a few flashes, but I'd like to see more from him going forward. If the 49ers can get more from LB, Campbell or another LB that can be more consistent, this team will thrive.
Delete* The 9ers make a couple of transactions Thursday morning. LB Jalen Graham was re-signed to the team’s PS. and a corresponding move was made to release Dieter Eiselen from the team’s practice squad.
ReplyDelete* IOL Jon Feliciano was a limited participant during Wednesday’s practice. He figures to be the swing IOL and that jeopardized Eiselen’s roster spot.
* OL coach, Chris Foerster, had this to say about Feliciano: “We’re looking at him right now as a backup center/guard. We have a true starter in a backup role. It’s great to have as a backup.”
Lombardi (per Trent Williams) reports that Dre Greenlaw is doing some running along the sidelines in practice today.
ReplyDeleteGreenlaw is week to week.
ReplyDeleteThe 9ers should be capable of beating TB and Seattle, but Getting Greenlaw back for week 12 would help putting the 9er in a much better position to beat the Packers and win the division.
ReplyDeleteMarcus Mbow, RT, Purdue (6'4", 305lbs). Top 100 pick.
ReplyDeleteRazor
ReplyDeleteMbow looks like a good fit for inside zone blocking scheme, but his arm are a little short for an NFL tackle? I have him as a mid to late 3Rd pick.
Tomorrows game, a must win?
ReplyDeleteTill they clench a playoff spot I would think every game is a must win.
