Nice to have the outside CB spots locked down for the next few years. DMO and Green should be a good tandem.
ReplyDeleteI feel like he probably could've gotten more on the open market. I'm glad he doesn't have that "diva" complex and likes it here. York giving the middle finger to those that were saying he was going cheap on us.
DeleteFor sure.
DeleteLove seeing how many of the 49ers draft picks end up earning big second contracts with the team.
It looks like after this last summers contract fiasco the 49ers may have changed their philosophy of waiting until after the draft to start negotiations. I have been complaining about that for years. They may be in even better shape than just locking down 2 CBs. Ward was having a poor year even before tragedy struck. He might try the FA waters and not get the long term offer he is hoping for. If that is the case he might sign a one year on the cheap to drive up his long term price.
ReplyDeleteI'd be letting Ward walk unless it's a super cheap 1 year deal. Nothing against Ward, I just think it's time to move on to DMO and Green. Look to draft/ sign a nickel and let DMO stay outside.
DeleteThis is good news.
ReplyDeleteRumours are that the 49ers aren't done with extensions and are currently in talks with Banks.
ReplyDeleteNo kidding? That's a surprise for mine.
DeleteA surprise to me too if it is true. But at the same time if they can get him to take decent but not big money I can see the sense in it. Would be nice to not have to worry about the OG spots for the foreseeable future, so they can focus on other areas.
DeleteI think they are set at DB especially if they can get Huff on the cheap. I think they are set at WR. If Greenlaw can come back any where near where he was pre injury, they are set at LB. They are set at RB. They are set at QB. They are set at TE. So for gods sake take all of their predicted 10 draft picks and draft 5 O linemen and 5 D linemen
ReplyDelete🤣 I hear you OC
DeleteThey need TE2 I would argue Coach......... agree w building from the lines out- absent, gotta have depth at Corner.
DeleteKittle is as tough as they come but yeah a GK2 is a definite need and it’s not Saubert.imo. Pline seems a year away if that.
DeleteAs long as GK is around the 49ers TE #2 will be primarily a blocking TE. Is Saubert a step down as a blocker from Woerner?
ReplyDeleteRe Saubert, I wouldn't be able to tell if he is. They were willing to let Woerner go, though, so presumably Saubert is preferred. But my point was that if Kittle can't play, there's no TE pass-catching threat. While this is mitigated by the fact the Niners are receiver target rich, and is perhaps that's why they don't put a bigger emphasis on this, the day is coming, maybe quite soon, when they'll need another Kittle.
DeleteGeo,
DeleteSay it ain't so
I was hoping that Penn St. TE, Tyler Warren would be on the 49ers radar, but he's been climbing up drafts boards which could put him out of reach.
ReplyDeleteAES
DeleteNo way will the 9ers use a first round draft pick for Tyler Warren. I won't be surprised if KC drafts him to replace TE Travis Kelce, when he hangs up his cleats.
Pat O'Donnell will be doing the punting this Sunday.
ReplyDeleteRazor,
DeleteI am less concerned with his punting and more concerned with his holding for FGs. That's all Moody needs after last week is a new holder who he has never worked with before.
Renardo Green is the 3rd highest graded CB in the NFL (84.2)
ReplyDeleteAgain, this is the best rookie class in the Lynch/Shanahan era. A few productive rookies along with a FA or two next year and the 49ers SB window stays open for hopefully 4-5 yrs.
ReplyDeleteWhether it's the best or not I don't know just yet - that 2019 class was pretty special getting us Bosa, Deebo, Greenlaw and Wish. But I do believe this class has provided the most immediate impact players of any draft class in the ShanaLynch era.
DeleteThis years strong draft combined with the 2019 great draft should provide a very good window for a SB going forward.
ReplyDeleteAye.
DeleteAnd then you add a few good ones from the intervening drafts (Aiyuk and Jennings in 2020, DMO and potentially Banks and Huff in 2021, Brock in 2022, 2023 TBA). Solid foundation for the team moving forward.
Since we're discussing future 9er players, I have questions for the blog, concerning three 9er players.
ReplyDelete* DT Javon Hargrave: He's a F/A the 9ers signed in 2023. His 1st season he played well, but his 2nd season he tore his triceps in the 3rd game of the season and was placed on IR. There's a chance he'll return if the 9ers make it ti the playoff.
Hargrave’s salary is $19.9 Mil next season, with another $850K available in bonuses. With other high-priced players on the team who are making greater contributions, should the 9ers give him a choice of taking a cut in pay, or being cut after June 1 and save ~ $20 million off the 9ers 2025 salary cap. Also, the money the 9ers save from Hargrave, could be use to resign LB Greenlaw?
* S Talanoa Hufanga: Hufanga was an All-Pro in his only full season as the starter, but he's been on IR for long periods of time the past two seasons. Now the 9er starting safeties are Mustapha and Brown.
Hufanga's 2024 salary is ~$5 Mil. and he'll be a F/A in 2025. So is there still a spot for Hufanga in the 2025 starting lineup?
* CB Charvarius Ward: Ward has a 2024 base salary of $12.560,000
plus a $100K work out bonus and incentive bonus of $500K, for a
a total 2024 compensation of $13,160,000 Mil.
After reaching a 5 yr, $92 mil deal with Lenoir, Green as the other
starting CB and both playing at a high level...Will the 9ers try to
extend Ward, or is he the odd man out and the 9ers save ~$13 mil?
I'd let all three go personally. If Huff and Ward can be brought back on the cheap then great, but if not let them walk. Hargrave is the tougher one for mine as when healthy I think he can still be good and it is a position of need, but he's just too expensive for what he's shown to date with the 49ers.
DeleteGeep,
DeleteLet me get this straight. If the 49ers wait until after June 1 before cutting Hargrave they save 25 mill on the 25 cap? If that's true then I imagine the same holds for Deebo? Say they cut those two players along with the huge roll over they have that gives them a pretty good cap situation.
Scooter
ReplyDeleteYea, I agree
One thing is for certain, if the Niners win out they win the division with a better record. That includes the Cardinals winning all their games except the upcoming loss to the Niners. The division is in their hands, all they have to do is win.
