  1. Nice to have the outside CB spots locked down for the next few years. DMO and Green should be a good tandem.

    1. I feel like he probably could've gotten more on the open market. I'm glad he doesn't have that "diva" complex and likes it here. York giving the middle finger to those that were saying he was going cheap on us.

    2. For sure.

Love seeing how many of the 49ers draft picks end up earning big second contracts with the team.

  2. It looks like after this last summers contract fiasco the 49ers may have changed their philosophy of waiting until after the draft to start negotiations. I have been complaining about that for years. They may be in even better shape than just locking down 2 CBs. Ward was having a poor year even before tragedy struck. He might try the FA waters and not get the long term offer he is hoping for. If that is the case he might sign a one year on the cheap to drive up his long term price.

    1. I'd be letting Ward walk unless it's a super cheap 1 year deal. Nothing against Ward, I just think it's time to move on to DMO and Green. Look to draft/ sign a nickel and let DMO stay outside.

  3. Rumours are that the 49ers aren't done with extensions and are currently in talks with Banks.

    1. No kidding? That's a surprise for mine.

    2. A surprise to me too if it is true. But at the same time if they can get him to take decent but not big money I can see the sense in it. Would be nice to not have to worry about the OG spots for the foreseeable future, so they can focus on other areas.

  4. I think they are set at DB especially if they can get Huff on the cheap. I think they are set at WR. If Greenlaw can come back any where near where he was pre injury, they are set at LB. They are set at RB. They are set at QB. They are set at TE. So for gods sake take all of their predicted 10 draft picks and draft 5 O linemen and 5 D linemen

    1. They need TE2 I would argue Coach......... agree w building from the lines out- absent, gotta have depth at Corner.

    2. Kittle is as tough as they come but yeah a GK2 is a definite need and it’s not Saubert.imo. Pline seems a year away if that.

      Delete
  5. As long as GK is around the 49ers TE #2 will be primarily a blocking TE. Is Saubert a step down as a blocker from Woerner?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Re Saubert, I wouldn't be able to tell if he is. They were willing to let Woerner go, though, so presumably Saubert is preferred. But my point was that if Kittle can't play, there's no TE pass-catching threat. While this is mitigated by the fact the Niners are receiver target rich, and is perhaps that's why they don't put a bigger emphasis on this, the day is coming, maybe quite soon, when they'll need another Kittle.

  6. I was hoping that Penn St. TE, Tyler Warren would be on the 49ers radar, but he's been climbing up drafts boards which could put him out of reach.

No way will the 9ers use a first round draft pick for Tyler Warren. I won't be surprised if KC drafts him to replace TE Travis Kelce, when he hangs up his cleats.

    2. GEEP,
No they won't. I mentioned a couple weeks ago that he could be available in the 2-3 rd.

For the following reasons.I'd take issue with you're assessment that TE, Tyler Warren will be drafted in the 2nd, or 3rd Rd, for the following reasons:
#1) I believe he'll be invited to NY for the Heisman Trophy ceremony and be drafted in the mid to late 1st round.
#2) He's one of the best, and most versatile, players in college football. He has played 5 positions this season in Penn State's offense, scoring TD's on the ground and through the air. He did both again Saturday against Purdue, catching a 15-yard TD pass in the 1st half and rushing for a 48-yard score from the Wildcat in the 2nd.
#3) Warren entered the Purdue game ranked among the top 4
TE's nationally in 7 offensive categories, including receptions, yards, yards per catch and first-down catch %. That doesn't include what he does in the run game. Warren has rushed for 4 touchdowns, becoming just the 7th tight end since 1956 to achieve that.
How much does Penn St value him in its run game? He has carried the ball 16 times this season, producing 13 first downs and four TD's. Against Purdue, he gained 8 yards on 4th-and-short.

OUT OF CURIOSITY, I LOOKED UP WARRENS ACHIEVEMENTS:
      * The TD reception was his 16th, tying Pat Freiernuth for the Penn State record for a TE.
      * Warren has 1,414 career receiving yards, which ranks 2nd for a Penn State TE behind Mike Gesicki (1,481).
      * Warren leads all Big 10 TE's with 7 TD's. 4 are rushing TD's.
Warren has scored 22 career TD's, a Penn State record among TE's.
      * Warren has a 26-game catch streak and has at least one reception of 14+ yards in his last 16 games.
      * Warren ranks 15th all-time on Penn State's receptions list (116). His 67-catch season (with 2 season games remaining) ranks 6th all-time at Penn State.

  7. Pat O'Donnell will be doing the punting this Sunday.

    1. Razor,
I am less concerned with his punting and more concerned with his holding for FGs. That's all Moody needs after last week is a new holder who he has never worked with before.

  9. Again, this is the best rookie class in the Lynch/Shanahan era. A few productive rookies along with a FA or two next year and the 49ers SB window stays open for hopefully 4-5 yrs.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Whether it's the best or not I don't know just yet - that 2019 class was pretty special getting us Bosa, Deebo, Greenlaw and Wish. But I do believe this class has provided the most immediate impact players of any draft class in the ShanaLynch era.

  10. This years strong draft combined with the 2019 great draft should provide a very good window for a SB going forward.

    1. Aye.

And then you add a few good ones from the intervening drafts (Aiyuk and Jennings in 2020, DMO and potentially Banks and Huff in 2021, Brock in 2022, 2023 TBA). Solid foundation for the team moving forward.

  11. Since we're discussing future 9er players, I have questions for the blog, concerning three 9er players.
    * DT Javon Hargrave: He's a F/A the 9ers signed in 2023. His 1st season he played well, but his 2nd season he tore his triceps in the 3rd game of the season and was placed on IR. There's a chance he'll return if the 9ers make it ti the playoff.
Hargrave’s salary is $19.9 Mil next season, with another $850K available in bonuses. With other high-priced players on the team who are making greater contributions, should the 9ers give him a choice of taking a cut in pay, or being cut after June 1 and save ~ $20 million off the 9ers 2025 salary cap. Also, the money the 9ers save from Hargrave, could be use to resign LB Greenlaw?

    * S Talanoa Hufanga: Hufanga was an All-Pro in his only full season as the starter, but he's been on IR for long periods of time the past two seasons. Now the 9er starting safeties are Mustapha and Brown.
Hufanga's 2024 salary is ~$5 Mil. and he'll be a F/A in 2025. So is there still a spot for Hufanga in the 2025 starting lineup?

    * CB Charvarius Ward: Ward has a 2024 base salary of $12.560,000
plus a $100K work out bonus and incentive bonus of $500K, for a
    a total 2024 compensation of $13,160,000 Mil.
After reaching a 5 yr, $92 mil deal with Lenoir, Green as the other
starting CB and both playing at a high level...Will the 9ers try to
extend Ward, or is he the odd man out and the 9ers save ~$13 mil?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'd let all three go personally. If Huff and Ward can be brought back on the cheap then great, but if not let them walk. Hargrave is the tougher one for mine as when healthy I think he can still be good and it is a position of need, but he's just too expensive for what he's shown to date with the 49ers.

      Delete
    2. Geep,
Let me get this straight. If the 49ers wait until after June 1 before cutting Hargrave they save 25 mill on the 25 cap? If that's true then I imagine the same holds for Deebo? Say they cut those two players along with the huge roll over they have that gives them a pretty good cap situation.

      Delete
    3. OldCoach
      * DT HARGRAVE: If the 9ers release him B-4 June 1, 2025:
It will cost them $24,860,000. After June 1, it will cost them $3,245,000.

      * WR Deebo: If the 9ers release him B-4 June 1 2025:
It will cost them $31,550,012. After June 1, 2025: It will
      cost them $15,592,154.

      * CB Charvarius Ward and S Talanoa Hufanga: Both are unrestricted free agent in 2025, If either one sign with another team, the 9ers could receive a comp draft pick.
So yes, that should give the 9ers a pretty good cap situation
and likely, a couple more draft picks.
      * NOTE: Under the rules for compensatory draft selections, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents (“CFA”) than it acquires in the previous year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks.

    1. Hopefully with a game under his belt he will have a better game running the ball. I wonder if Sea will employ the same D as the Bucs IE 5 man lines and 8 in the box? If they do BP should have numbers like he did last week. Now he needs to get us into the end zone more often. Some good news, it looks like the rain will hold off until after the game. Which Is good news for BP because as we all know he is terrible in wet weather.

    * When Seattle plays the 9ers on Sunday, they'll look considerably different at several positions. They have 2 new starting LB's since the previous meeting. They traded Jerome Baker, along with a draft pick, for Ernest Jones IV. And earlier this week they waived Tyrel Dodson, leading to a likely start for rookie Tyrice Knight. * At SS Coby Bryant has taken over a starting job following an injury to Rayshawn Jenkins, and he's played well enough that it's hard to see him not playing even when Jenkins returns.
    * At cornerback, Josh Jobe, who was on the PS when they met in October, has played well in the past 3 games and earned a spot on the 53 roster. Even with the Seahawks getting healthy at CB, Macdonald said Jobe will likely be the team's 3rd CB, joining starters Devon Witherspoon and Riq Woolen on the field in nickel packages.

    * Seattle has been one of the worst teams defending the run. They’ve allowed RB's to combine for at least 118 yards in 6 of 9 games.
They’ve made 2 separate trades for front 7 D players to address the
the problem, but despite upgrading the defensive line depth by acquiring Roy Robertson-Harris and swapping inside linebacker Jerome Baker for Ernest Jones IV, they're still missing tackles, can't get off blocks and take bad angles.
    * Seattle always plays the 9er tough, but if they can score in the red zone and not lose a 4th qtr lead, I'm looking forward to the 9ers beating Seattle by at least 14 point, with both CMC and Kittle having big games Sunday.

    1. Geep,
I see this game being a repeat of last Sundays game. I see the Seahawks selling out to stop the run and there being few holes for the RBs. I see BP passing for 350 yards. I hope the new holder doesn't make Moody even more unpredictable and BP has to get this team into the end zone.

  18. The keys to a 9er week 11 victory over Seattle on Sunday:
    * The 9ers have a 5W - 0L record against Seattle since BP took over as the starting QB late in the 2022 season. The 9ers can't afford to stumble against another NFC West team as they prepare for Sunday's game against Seattle, especially after letting big leads get away in losses to Arizona and the Rams. The 9ers need to make it 6W - 0L this Sunday, before hitting the road for must wins against GB and Buffalo if they hope to make the playoffs.
    * The 9ers D must stop the run. Seattle is ranked 27th in rushing yards per game, but they'll still try to run the ball. The 9ers Defense should be able to stop the run early and force the Seattle to be one-dimensional. The 9er D must continue to defend in the 4th qtr and not allow RB's Walker or Charbonnet to wear down the D and score.
    * With 3 WR's featuring Metcalf, Tyler Lockett & Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Seatle QB, Geno Smith, will try to throw the ball to them to win the game.
    * 9er CB Charvarius Ward is out for another game as he mourns the death of his young daughter. That leaves it up to 9er DB's Green,
Lenoir, Yiadom, Mustapha and Brown to shut them down.
Rookie CB Green made the play of the game to save the 9er week 6 victory over Seattle when he undercut a DK Metcalf route to intercept a pass from Geno Smith. He returned it 20 yards to set up a quick 9er touchdown and Lenoir was just rewarded with a 5 year, $88.8 million extension for his excellent play. Opposing QB's have a lowly 65.0 passer rating when targeting Lenoir this season. He has yielded 35 receptions on 56 targets for 346 yards with two int's and no TD's!

    * 9er QB Brock Purdy Purdy threw for 255 yards with 3 TDs and no ints in the 9ers’ 36-24 victory over Seattle in Week 6. He did a good job of solving Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald’s defense.
    * RB McCaffrey was unavailable for week 6 game against Seattle, but this Sun he will be his first game back. Against TB, he played 56 of the 9ers’ 64 offensive snaps and had 19 touches in the game (13 carries for 39 yards and six receptions for 68 yards). CMC faced a stacked box on 52.85% of his rushing attempts. That was the highest share of any running back in Week 10. Seattle will try to make it difficult for McCaffrey, but BP should be able to exploit the Hawk passing matchups against him. Seattles' rush D ranks 26th in the NFL, giving up an average of 139.4 yards per game.
    * WR's Jennings, Deebo, Pearsall and TE Kittle: Seattles' pass D has weak spots, and I expect BP to take advantage of them with quick, throws and check-downs passes to all of his receivers, especially WR
Jennings, TE Kittle and RB CMC
    I see the 9ers winning by 14 points: Hawks 17 VS 9ers 31

  19. It looks like Gross-Matos will suit up this Sunday, It looks like Wishnowsky will miss the next 4 games. I wish they had signed the guy who punted for them in the preseason. He had a huge leg and was excellent at kicking inside the 20. Evidently he wasn't the best holder, maybe they could have used Juice to hold for kicks

I think he is taking Wishnowski's spot on the roster and the new punter will come of the PS. I think they are adding Gross-Matos for depth at DE and to move inside on passing downs.

9er TE George Kittle is unlikely to play today against Seattle.
    * He's officially listed as questionable and could still play if his injured hamstring feels good in pregame warmups, but the expectation now is that Kittle won't be able to go.
    * Kittle leads the 49ers with 43 catches for 560 yards and seven touchdowns this season.
