Dominick Puni ranks second among all guards in Sports Info Solutions' points earned metric. He hasn't allowed a sack and has just six blown blocks in nearly 400 plays. Jones leads all interior defensive linemen with at least 50 pass rush snaps in pass rush win rate (21.7%), per PFF, and is second in total pressures (28). Spags moves Jones all over but I don't expect him to waste a lot of reps against Williams. I'd imagine the gameplan will be to try and keep 4 hands on him at all times. Don't turn the ball over and run a lot of off tackle with Kittle lined up to the right or to the left, doesn't matter. Mahomes is averaging an INT a game. Reid will exploit Campbell in the passing game despite Sorenson's efforts to match up Warner on Kelce. I think Lenoir could be another option. Moody Ward needs to show up in this game. Bosa and Floyd should get sacks, especially if Kingsley ever sees the field. The Chief IOL is probably the best in the league. Activating Mahoney over Anderson seems ill advised although I understand its a special teams issue. Still, any team could poach Anderson off their practice squad. Kinda risky after the film he's put out there. I feel like the return of Pearsall gives the team an emotional boost and they overwhelm the Chiefs like they did the Eagles, 42-19 San Francisco!

Razor: "Do you have a theory as to why the big change?"
OldCoach
IMO, Purdy is in the shotgun, using less play action, because Shanahan strategically chooses to utilize play action only against specific defensive looks, particularly when facing defenses that are NOT heavily blitzing. KS changed his offense scheme because he trusts Purdy in the gun, to quickly read and react to defensive adjustments and blitz packages! He's prioritizing BP's ability to make quick decisions over the deception of play action, when he's facing aggressive defenses!
* Some people, including myself, question if KS will call less running plays & more passing? Will the 9er O-Line utilize less zone blocking and do more power blocking? Also, is the O-Line capable of giving BP the time to find his receivers without scrambling and exposing
him to being injured?
* KC's Spagnuolo is known to run a blitz heavy defense, so we'll see
if KS runs play action, or not. And if the 9ers O-line can protect BP.
COMMENTS WELCOMED: Feel free to agree or disagree.
Niners offense will need at least 150+ yards on the ground, if so they win the game. Pound the rock.
DeleteAgree that Shanahan's trust in Purdy plays a big part in the change, and Purdy's strengths at doing full field pre and post snap reads quickly plus ability to escape if needed. I highly doubt we'd be seeing this if JG was still the QB.
DeleteI also think it's partly a factor of wanting to stay a step ahead. Lots of teams are now running schemes built on YAC and so defenses are adjusting.
Scooter
DeleteI agree and you make a good point that "Lots of teams are now running schemes built on YAC and so defenses are adjusting."
Am I understanding correctly that Evan Anderson hasn't been elevated this week and won't be active vs the Chiefs?
ReplyDeleteCorrect.
DeleteMatt Maiocco said that he expects Ricky Pearsall to be the 49ers WR3 today and to get anywhere from 15 to 25 snaps.
ReplyDeleteIMO, the 9er success against KC this Sunday will depend on the 9er doing 3 things!
ReplyDelete1) The 9er O-line must prevent KC's blitzing DB(s) from sacking BP. 2) Control KC DT Chris Jones.
3) Run the ball. Prevent KC D from making them one dimensional.
* The Chiefs DC, Spagnuolo, doesn't use coverage disguise as much as others, opting to show a two-high shell or other variations like a ‘Trap 2’ defense when he sends pressures. He focuses on attacking protections using 5 man pressures. Usually, he calls for pressures that are simple overload concepts that use the front’s alignment or the placement of their star DT, Chris Jones, to manipulate the protection.
Wow. 42-19 would be a stunner.
ReplyDeleteSpecial teams is just killing this team.
ReplyDeleteWell, it’s been a thorough colonoscopy by Reid and co.
ReplyDeleteOffense no bueno.
Without their 2 best backs and top 3 receivers against the best team in football, there wasn’t much of a chance for a victory.
ReplyDeleteEspecially with the hapless, woebegone Kyle Shanahan in charge and calling plays. When are you going to realize that this guy is never going to get us there. It's time for a change.
DeleteFrom 49ersUnderKSraBust
Throughout Purdy's career, he couldn't or wouldn't drive the pass down field and his balloon passes cost a touchdown on Kittle's and Cowing's receptions.
ReplyDeletePlaying Ronnie Bell instead of Cowing?
Is this part of Shanahan's reluctance to play/trust rookies? All that speed with Pearsall, Cowing and Guerendo and we throw one screen to Cowing (which worked) when really nothing else was working except Kittle.
I don't think we missed Deebo. He can't do anything against press coverage. Pearsall and Cowing were fine.
I know the defense gave up 28 points, but I though Sorensen at least tried to make adjustments. Kelce was not a factor at all in this game; they hounded Mahomes into 2 interceptions. Tackling is still an issue and I'm really hating the wide 9 especially down at the goal line (where PM just waltzed up the middle into the end zone). Still I give Sorensen some credit for trying to make some adjustments to shut the Chiefs down. Offense was the big failure in this game although special teams is still an issue. When will KS realize that ST failure are his failures - the buck stops with him.
ReplyDeleteIt might be a good idea to pump the breaks on Purdy being elite. While he is a great young QB, he needs much more to reach "elite" status. That term is reserved for Brady, Montana, Mahomes and a handful of other QBs past and present. I know the excuse of missing his top WRs have legitimacy, but real elite players like Brady won without highly rated WRs unless you count Randy Moss who had a very short stent in NE. Mahomes has won without Tyreek Hill. That's deserving of elite status.
ReplyDeleteYes. Yes. I have been anticipating ten years of playoffs because of Purdy, but I might be so wrong. It's his temperment that's giving me pause -- consistently forcing throws -- the jitters. Just throw the ball away if there's nothing there. His arm is so-so, so when he has to throw with anticipation, everything has to be perfect -- really puts a lot on the receivers whereas a strong-armed QB could just rifle it in there, and so have a split second better look at the coverage.
DeleteWell, this could get interesting: There's Mike Mcdaniel's Dolphins' playbook -- Pearsall, Cowing and Guerendo would fit and with the punch of Mason, Kittle and Juszczyk -- by the end of the season, we could be an experienced new offense, and thanks to our weak division, in the playoffs, too.
ReplyDeleteI am optimistic for another week!!
A question for all of the NFL DCs. Why in the world do any of you run zone D versus Brock Purdy? He murders zone D on a regular basis while sh***ing the bed versus man press coverage. He goes from near elite to pretty damn terrible in no time at all. I understand that some teams/DCs are zone teams but the ones that run Man just kill us. It took NFL DCs about 2 full seasons to catch up with C. Kaep and Purdy is at that point right now. Do you remember a few NFL insiders saying that CK may end up being the best QB of all time? It reminds me of a lot of the things being said about Purdy the last year or so.
ReplyDeleteThere is just no comparison and to compare Purdy to Kap is ridiculous. What opponents figured out about Kap is that he was a runner not a QB. Purdy has proven he is an elite QB who will get even better with more experience.
DeleteThe biggest problem yesterday was we were missing so many offensive players. He isn’t shitting the bed with anything. Our receivers aren’t getting open against man. That’s on the receivers. Maybe our new receivers will do better. It couldn’t be worse than what Aiyuk has shown this year and what ever happened to Deebo?
until we fix an awful o line and a mediocre d line we will continue to see good teams beat us. please please draft some o line personnel. yesterday we could not run block or pass protect.
ReplyDeleteESPN: "49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk suffered what team fears is torn ACL."
ReplyDeleteThis would be an already deep hole for the team to climb out of if Aiyuk is lost for the season.
TWO QUESTIONS FOR THE BLOG:
ReplyDelete1) With the likely ACL injury to Aiyuk, should the 9ers try to trade for another WR?
* The NY Giants WR Darius Slayton would cost <$2 Mil. for the rest of the season and he's in the final year of his contract. The 27 Y/O rental would be cheap, he shouldn’t cost more than a Day 3 pick.
* Slayton fits what the 49ers do. The majority of his targets come at the mid portion of the field. He has enough speed for the occasional deep throw, but 123 of Slayton’s 301 yards have come between the 10-19 portion of the field.
2) Should the 9ers try to trade Deebo for a WR like Tee Higgins with
Cincinnati?
* Higgins is playing on the franchise tag and will be an UFA after this season. The Bengals risk losing Higgins for nothing this offseason.
This would be a move the 9ers make to swap Higgins for Deebo and unload his salary, move forward with Higgins this season and pair him with Aiyuk moving forward. The 9ers have ~$55 Mil in cap space, so money is not an issue especially if they can offload Samuel’s contract.
* Higgins is a WR1 in this league. He’s also 25, 6’4, and wins in the exact ways the 49ers need him to. Yards after the catch have always been his strength, and Higgins could be the red zone weapon the Niners desperately need.
Geep,
ReplyDeleteIf the 49ers lose to Dallas I wouldn't be surprised to see them trade a few of the players that they won't be able to resign or will have to release after signing BP this off season. C. Ward, Deebo, Banks, A. Thomas and J. Dobbs. They could add 3 or 4 picks for a 2025 rebuild
OldCoach
Delete"They could add 3 or 4 picks for a 2025 rebuild."
* I agree with you. And based on how well the 9er rookies have stepped up, I'm all for 3 or 4 more 2025 draft picks.
* I would like to see the 9ers draft a C, OG and OT, but would
likely be day 3 picks.
* If I'm correct, the 9ers have 9 draft picks in 2025. Their own
1st, 2nd, 3rd + a 2nd 3Rd (comp for D Ryans to Houston) 4th,
5th Rd comp for QB Sam Darnold, after losing their 5th round
pick (administrative payroll accounting error), their 6th and 7th
round pick, + a 7th Rd comp pick for TE Charlie Woerner.
A rebuild. Are you kidding me? The Niners are recognized as having one of the best rosters in the league. Where is the common sense.
DeleteFelix,
DeleteWe were discussing trades they might make if they lose to Dallas and we were discussing trading players they very well may have to release to sign BP to a 50 to 60 mill contract this off season. If they are unable to resign Ward, Deebo, Banks, Greenlaw, Campbell, Thomas, McKivitz, Lenoir, Hufanga, Mitchell, Mason, Dobbs, Givens, Allen, Flannigan-Fowles, Yiadom, Ya-Sin, Bartch, Taylor, Robinson, Graham, Willis, Tonges and Okuayinonu or combination off as well as replacing Brendel, I think that defines as a rebuild.
That’s a rebuild in your mind only.
DeleteFelix,
DeleteI'm curious how many players would the 49ers have to replace for you to consider it a rebuild? How many starters? How many key backups?
The red zone deficiency, the STs flaws, WR and CMC injury and Purdy looking like Nick Mullins yesterday. What player can the 49ers make at the Trade Deadline that will turn this team around? I'm not so sure there is one out there. Huggins is nice, but at the moment it's looking like the team needs more than a tune-up.
ReplyDeleteI'm still believing that all they need to do is just make the playoffs.
AES,
DeleteAt what point do they turn away from being buyers and turn into sellers?
They will likely make a move at the Trade deadline, but the key is the team getting healthy by mid to late November and making it to the playoffs. Unless the 49ers can receive a good bang for a buck in possible trades that makes sense that's fine. But, there are many areas on the team that a trade or two won't do much to rectify.
ReplyDeleteIn my experience, "Nothing is ever as good or as bad as it seems". Losing to KC in that fashion is the absolute low point, but truly how many of us thought we would win? :)
ReplyDeleteThis season is now about long term sustainability and see what is Brock's ceiling and also in a way, determine how adaptable KS can be. Still a long way to go..... We are not even at the halfway mark.
Regarding WR Trades, I don't think it is wise to invest so much in one position (WR), so no point trading for one. Let the rookies play and let them develop. That's the externality for this season.
D is improving and as long as Purdy can make check-downs, we should be good for playoffs either as WC or as Division champs (if the cards fall our way). Reinforcements coming.... JJ, CMC, Huf, Greenlaw and YGM should make this team better.
OMG. Common sense.
DeleteMug,
ReplyDeleteThe 49ers getting healthy is much more important than a trade or two. Hopefully, by the end of November the team is at full strength. If they are, they will be hard to beat in post season. Just get to the Playoffs Baby!
Agree. No trades unless we are selling.
DeleteAin't gonna lie. It's Misery Monday today and I'm avoiding the internet for the next week. :)
Let's face it - Kyle Shanahan is out ideas at this stage, and his team's lack of production in the redzone without CMC is proof that Kyle's best days as a HC are clearly behind him. This season is a testament to the importance of winning closing the deal, and winning a Lombardi when you're fortunate enough to get there twice in 5 years! Kyle's losing credibility around the league with every loss!
ReplyDeleteThe two most difficult tasks for a pro sports teams (any sport) front offices to succeed at are drafting a QB and hiring a NFL HC. As disappointed in KS as I am this season it would be team suicide to fire KS. They are far more likely to end up with the next Erickson, Singletary, Nolan or Tomsula than the next Harbaugh or KS. We just have to hope that signing BP for 50 to 60 mill doesn't hamstring this team for the next 5 or 6 years. Secondly thru the draft and smart cheap FA signings they have to put together an O line so KS can return to his very successful past and run the ball 40 times a game. This would also take a lot of the pressure of off BP who I am beginning to believe is not elite or great but is good to very good.
DeleteLooks like 49Reason has returned to spread joy and good will?
DeleteAnonymous,
DeleteShanahan definitely got ripped a new one by Reid and Spags. His red zone issues have been on display this season even with Deebo, Aiyuk and Jennings on the field, so he can't get a free pass on that excuse.
Anonymous, do you think Kyle suddenly forgot how to be a coach? Is it possible that the lack of production was caused by so many injuries to the skill players? They are the ones on the field you know. The best teams do get beat sometimes especially when they have so many injuries.
DeleteSince most of us don’t know shit about coaching a professional team, maybe we should confine our opinions to what we can actually see the players doing on the field instead of just making stupid comments about things we no nothing about.
Felix
DeleteJust curious, but have you been on the blog long enough to be familiar with 49Reasons?
I've been following this blog (and previously the PD's) to know Felix is nothing more than an excuse-ridden acolyte for this hapless, woebegone coach of ours. Give it up, Felix. Read Grant Cohn and listen to his father Lowell. Niners are never going to get to the promised land under Shanahan. And whether this season or next, he needs to go and deservedly so. From 49ersUnderKSraBust
DeleteAnonymous I’m very familiar with your idiotic comments and variety of names. You’ve just been full of hate against the Niners. Keep it up so we can continue to see what a miserable life have.
DeleteMUG / AES
ReplyDeleteI hate being a pessimist, BUT.....
* KC is not the only team to expose the fact that blitzing teams give
the 9ers O-line and BP problems. When the opposing D stack the box, KS stops running the ball and teams with DB's that play man have taken Deebo out of the game. The rest of NFL watch tape, learn and
will copy KC DC, Spagnuolo!
ALSO....
* Seattle is one game ahead of the 9ers and play a better schedule. They only travel cross country to play the Jets and Bears. The rest of their games are played against other division teams
The 9ers travel cross country to play TB, GB, Buffalo and Miami.
* While players coming off IR will help the 9ers, there's no guarantee against additional injuries. The injuries this season is like the 2020 season, the 9ers could be in worse shape at the end of the season than now!
Good points GEEP. But I firmly believe that the 49ers will catch fire by mid November and make their annual run to the playoffs where no team will look forward to playing against them. Getting past the Boy's and getting a well needed bye can be the ticket to turning it around.
DeleteGEEP,
DeleteI understand the way you feel, but we have a few things working for us:
1) Not all teams can play man perfectly, like MN and KC. Most teams just don't have the DBs/Coaches to do that. So we have that going for us. Even against KC, we had two walk-in TDs schemed by KS....so it was not all bad.
2) Since KS was nationally embarrassed, I'm pretty sure Papa Shanahan and KS will scheme us to a victory against the Boys. KS will want to show off how "good" he is on National TV against a hated rival.
After the Cowboys, we play the Bucs after the Bye. The Bucs play tonight, Falcons next Sunday and play the Chiefs that Monday night, so even though we travel cross-country, we have a major rest advantage.
3) Before the season started, I was also one who thought that the 'Hawks will be vastly better, and they also play the No3 schedule. But the 'Hawks have their own injuries to their D-Line and Geno is gonna be Geno against us. So we will be fine, as long as we win on Nov 17th.
Also, if you look at 'Hawks schedule, they still have to play Bills, Vikings, Packers, Rams Twice, Cards Twice. Cards and Rams always play 'Hawks tough. Plus to top it all off, Hawks play the Jets at the Graveyard aka Metlife.
So we still have a good chance at the Division and anything can happen. No1 seed, OTH.... not so much.
Mug
DeleteI agree with you, to a degree! That's all good and true, but losing against KC at home, as you said, they were "nationally embarrassed!" That makes Dallas a come to Jesus game! If the 9ers lose to Dallas, especially if they give up a late 4th quarter lead AGAIN, IMO, all bets are off and it's time to make some major changes.
While I understand the season is NOT over, the 9ers don't play
to make the playoffs, they play TO WIN A SB. Just my opinion, but If / when that changes, it's time to make changes to both the players and in the front office....
Coach,
ReplyDeleteI would not fire Shanahan by any means. But, the best coaches find a way to win even in dire circumstances. Shanahan has proved that he can do this. But, this year will be his Mona Lisa if he can find ways to get to the playoffs. Beating the Boy's and going into the bye at 4-4 is a good start.
Agreed. The sky is not falling and even if it was, we wouldn’t know how to fixit. Hopefully we get some guys back and give ourselves a better chance.
DeleteI sure would like to know who are making the mistakes on special teams. Without that mistake, we might have won that game. I could clearly see that the right side of the field was unprotected during the run back. Someone or two were out of position and I would like to know who. This keeps happening and I wonder what the consequences are for not doing what you are instructed to do. Hopefully it’s not the same person very week.
Per ESPN,
ReplyDeleteAiyuk gone for the season.
AES,
ReplyDeleteI think he has to win this week to have any chance of saving this season. My biggest fear is when what we are all waiting for, the return of the injured players happens most of them are no where near their level of play before the injury.
"Deebo hospitalized with pneumonia and fluid in his lungs. No time-line for return."
ReplyDeleteThe hits keep coming. Just make it to the Playoffs Baby!
Deebo has not been the same player all year. I wonder when his issues began. I got viral pneumonia about 35 years ago I started feeling "off" about 3 weeks before the hardcore symptoms set in. It took almost 2 years for my full lung capacity to return.
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping for a different 49er team after the bye. They have tough games ahead but if they can catch fire with players coming back from injury it could make for an exciting and memorable season. This team is too good to fall off the map. CMC and Mason could be a great combination Pearsall and Cowing could bring something new to the table. Purdy had a bad outing against the Chiefs. But we know he's much better than that. The playoffs are still within view for the team.
ReplyDeleteDonte Whitner believes that the 49ers should take a look at DeAndre Hopkins.
ReplyDeleteAES
ReplyDelete** DeAndre Hopkins' 2024 NFL season:
* Overall grade: PFF gives 32 Y/O Hopkins an overall grade of 67.9 for 2024, which ranks him 48th out of 90 wide receivers.
* Receiving yards: Hopkins has 175 receiving yards for 2024, which ranks him 69th out of 90 wide receivers.
* Touchdowns: Hopkins has 1 touchdown for 2024, which ranks him 49th out of 90 wide receivers.
* Strengths: Hopkins excels at handling press coverage, making plays against tight coverage, and facing double coverage.
* Hopkins' weakest situation is against man coverage, which is unusual for an X receiver, but he is still better than average.
* Trade rumors: Hopkins is in the final year of his contract, which has led to trade chatter. The Titans aren't eager to deal Hopkins, but they might listen to potential offers.
* Hopkins 2024 Salary: $8,270,000 in base salary, plus a $4,460,000 roster bonus and a $250,000 workout bonus.
* The Titans are not "eager to deal him as of now," according to ESPN, and more than that, Hopkins "likes playing in Tennessee," and is not "angling to get out of there" despite the team's 1-4 start.
* The wideout all but echoed the sentiment when asked about trade rumors Thursday. "I love my life," Hopkins said. "I love where I am. God put me where I need to be, and He always will."
* Cincinnati WR Tee Higgins Salary: 25 Y/O Higgins Higgins signed a 2024 franchise tag for $ 21.816 Million dollars.
* 9er WR Deebo Samuel 2024 base Salary is $1.125Mil +$200K workout bonus. On Sep. 3Rd, 28 Y/O Deebo converted $19.974 Mil of 2024 compensation into signing bonus, adding 1 additional void year, clearing $16.47 Mil of space for the 9ers.
GEEP,
ReplyDeleteIf there's one thing I've learned in my 60+ yrs of the NFL, it's that a good deal can change a players mind. I'm not touting this deal, I'm just relaying Whitner thoughts on the 49ers taking a look at Hopkins. The Titans aren't going anywhere soon and their QB issues are in flux. Hopkins' stats would largely improve with Purdy and so would his chances of playing in the post season.
Three plays stick in my head.
ReplyDelete1. Bosa offsides
2. Williams hold
4. Aiyuk dropped pass
All three of these players held out for monster contracts and all three of them contributed mightily to the loss. KS play calling sucked and Purdy had a lousy game and of course the special teams were not special. As of yet this is not a Super Bowl team.
And I can't count... 1, 2, then 4 hmmm.
DeleteVenting helps.....lol
DeleteAES
ReplyDeleteOld or young, as a 9er fan It's all good. Or should I say "hope springs eternal?"
* However, what Hopkins said when asked about trade rumors. "I love my life," Hopkins said. "I love where I am. God put me where I need to be, and He always will." That does NOT sound like someone who wants to be traded! And I think we both know if he's not a happy camper, he's not going to be motivated to give it his all?
* CMC: I hope for the best with CMC, his Bilateral Achilles injury IMO, is worse than the 9ers are telling us! WHY? You don't go to Germany for platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection treatment. NOT during the season, if the treatment he was receiving was working. Even if he comes back after the bye, he won't be in football shape and 100%. Also, the Achilles pain may return and he could be out for the season.
* Aside from the injured players coming back from IR, there is the fact that the team has regressed. Getting beat by the Vikings hurt.
Losing to the Rams and Arizona was even worse, especially the way
they lost by giving up leads in the 4th quarter,
* Losing to KC at home was a disaster. The mistakes the players made, especially the ST. Not being able to score in the red zone and not matching up physically with KC can't be excused because of
injuries. The players are not focused mentally that result in mistakes.
* If the 9ers lose to Dallas, I don't see the 9ers making the playoffs.
I also believe KS will need to make changes. Free agents that won't be with the 9ers next year should be replaced and more playing time given to the rookies who have earned it.
Trades that improve the team, both this year and in the future, should be made. That includes Deebo, who is good, but not great against
teams with CB that can shut him down playing man IMO, he's being overpaid as a WR.
Like I said, "VENTING HELPS!"
ReplyDeleteI agree, venting does help. My blood pressure goes off the charts when the 49ers lose, especially against teams they should beat. Maybe I'm to invested, lol.
ReplyDeleteCMC went to Germany because American doesn't approve this method. Kobe Bryant also went to Germany for the same treatment.
Hopkins is Whitner's idea, there's no report that the 49ers are even exploring it. Deebo is our best weapon at the moment. Getting rid of him is a signal that the team is putting this season on ice. There's still a lot of football left. If they lose to the Boy's it will be a big blow no doubt. But, not a knockout blow. All the 49ers need to do is win their division. Once in the playoffs they will be dangerous.
AES
Delete"CMC went to Germany because American doesn't approve this method."
* I disagree, The PRP "METHOD" in the U S is approved. * In the U S, PRP injections typically involve a simpler extraction process, potentially including more white blood cells and other blood components in the final product.
* In Germany, they utilize a "Regenokine" treatment, which involves a more refined process of removing certain blood components to potentially reduce inflammation when injecting the PRP.
* The FDA considers the process used to create Regenokine to manipulate the blood sample too much, so it's considered a "DRUG" and is not allowed in the United States.
Do you remember who created the "WAR ON DRUGS?"
Yes, I do. But the cat has been out of the box for over 40yrs now. No need to expound.
DeleteIf Jennings is healthy for the Dallas game maybe he can put on a repeat of the Rams game. Does anyone know if Dallas is primarily a man team or a zone team?
ReplyDeleteOldCoach
DeleteDallas DC, Mike Zimmer, prioritizes press man coverage behind a creative simulated pressure (blitz), look. But he'll also use zone coverage!
* Typically, his safeties are split deep before the snap, then changes up after the snap by rotating his safeties, dropping players into coverage after showing a blitz, and try to make the QB think as much as possible after the ball is snapped.
* Zimmer also uses quarter coverage, dropping 4 defenders back deep and has several different variations on it depending on the offense’s alignment,
I've not yet put myself through watching the Chiefs game and not sure I will. Sounds like a debacle.
ReplyDeleteI said previously this was feeling a lot like the 2021 season, with a team that came out very flat to start the season before they turned it around. But it's now starting to feel more like 2020... SB hangover and injuries.
Not sure where this team goes from here. Bad games happen, and losing to the Chiefs is hardly a surprise. But being thoroughly outplayed, having already lost two division games they had no right losing... it's not looking good.
And Purdy's issues against man coverage are also now alarming.
"And Purdy's issues against man coverage are also now alarming."
DeleteHow much of those issues can be attributed to WRs who can not separate?
Imo that is part of it, as is press man impacting the timing of routes.
DeleteBut Purdy has to adapt to the timing being changed, which so far he hasn't done well.
Scooter / cubus
DeleteI agree that 9er WR's who can't separate and BP needing to adapt to the timing, is a problem that needs to be fixed. BUT missed tackles by the defense, an O-Line that can't create gaps to run thru, (Mason only gained 58 yards on 14 carries), can't adjust to blitzing Line backers (the O- line couldn't stop George Karlaftis and Chris Jones from pressuring BP) and can't pass block, are also a problem! Also, a ST, If I use the term "TEAM" loosely, NOT very special..Did I mention the 9er offense looked lethargic for most of the game?
Baldinger echoing Tom Brady thoughts.
ReplyDelete"Well, I think that [Brady] thinks he's got some restrictions with his arm," Baldinger said Tuesday morning on Bay Area radio station 95.7 The Game. "He's got some restrictions with his size—you're at 6-1."
I see no reason why Baldy would say this unless it really came from Brady. I believe that Brady knows a thing or two about QBs. Purdy needs to put these things behind him and prove them wrong.
I don’t think the arm strength issue is really an issue at all. He seems to be able to make all the throws so arm strength is as good as it needs to be. I can see that being a little taller might be helpful on occasion. The most important attributes for any QB is accuracy and processing and he’s elite in both areas. He also has great pocket presence and very quick on his feet. Probably no one is elite in every area.
DeleteBased on the teams after 7 games. Who would you say is a possible Superbowl match up?
ReplyDeleteI'm going with Baltimore vs Detroit.
AES
ReplyDeleteNot sure who you addressed the question to? If it was to me.....
I like Baltimore and Detroit, but it is hard to overlook KC and their
perfect record, especially since one of the 2 Baltimores losses was to
KC.
Thanks GEEP. It's an open question for the panel. KC is the favorite until they get knocked off the pedestal. I think that the Ravens will do the job this year. Jackson is tearing-up the league and Goff is doing the same at the moment.
ReplyDeleteOf course, the real 49ers have not shown up yet. But all that could change when they do.
This will put an end to the 9ers trading for WR DeAndre Hopkins talk!
ReplyDeleteChiefs reportedly finalizing trade for Titans receiver DeAndre Hopkins
https://sports.yahoo.com/chiefs-reportedly-finalizing-trade-for-titans-receiver-deandre-hopkins-112921934.html
Ouch! Looks like Hopkins was only using the "I'm happy in Tennessee" talk to push for the best bidder. And he got it.
ReplyDeleteJonnydel video on the game. After watching it, I came to the conclusion that a lot of the problems were that Brock and the WRs were not on the same page, plus Spag's excellent defense basically didn't allow for any errors. Also, because Brock's game is one of anticipation, he's throwing to a spot. If the WR isn't there, it can and for a number of plays did look very bad.
ReplyDeleteThis is one of the best videos I've seen from Jonny. He really explains the plays and he claims that he has the 49ers playbook. He uses it as a reference to explain how the play should have gone and mostly the mistakes that were made by the 49ers that caused the play to fail.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jOFwCBSmrSo
The NFL HOF committee has narrowed the field down to 50 for next years class. 3 9ers are among those nominated. J. Staley, R. Waters and A. Boldin. I know Staley will be the favorite among 9ers fans but I don't see him as a 1st ballot kinda guy. Although he wasn't the most popular player after he left the 9ers or even when he was playing for us, R. Waters belongs in the HOF. He probably won't make it the writers don't like him.
ReplyDeleteNo Rodger Craig? Embarrassing.
DeleteAES,
DeleteThose 3 players were nominated by the current day players committee. Craig is on the old timers list.
Thanks Coach. I hope that there are still enough old timers around to vote for him. 😉
Delete"As a corresponding move, the 49ers have signed defensive lineman Evan Anderson to the 53-man roster from the club’s practice squad. Anderson, who joined San Francisco as an undrafted free agent in the spring, has appeared in two games this season. He’s recorded four tackles, a sack, a tackle for loss, and a forced fumble."
ReplyDeleteTrade targets- not sure where they'll go- but I would call on Diontae Johnson...... maybe even Thielen on the cheap. Personally, I prefer to see Cowings and Pearsall get their shots.... I think Jennings and Deebo, w the run game, and Kittle, are sufficient.
ReplyDeletediptown
ReplyDelete* Thielen is 34 years old, has lost some speed and I believe he is currently on IR? When activated off IR, he'll likely see a reduced workload due to the additions of D. Johnson and X. Legette.
* 28 Y/O D. Johnson may be traded by the Panthers before the Nov. 5th deadline, to collect more draft picks.
He is coming off IR- but he had a solid year last season and would be dirt cheap- I agree he is old........ but, perhaps worth a look- I anticipate the market for Johnson and possibly Higgins to be pretty hot...... you trust Bell or Thielen?
Deletediptown
Delete"you trust Bell or Thielen?"
Thats not a choice I want to make. IMO, Bell doesn't belong in the NFL, so I'll take old and dirt cheap.
* Before the 9ers make a trade for a WR, I want to see how Pearsall does against Dallas? Also, can J Jennings play the WR X position? IMO, he can separate against man. * If the 9ers do move Jennings, who replaces him, J. Cowing?
* Your thoughts on Deebo, Do the 9ers keep him, or trade him for a Nr 1 WR?
Definitely gotta keep Deebo- the team still has enough pieces to be successful...... Winters will hopefully develop, along w Mustapha, Cowings and Pearsall. Personally, I would explore pieces along the line (both) as they will have to remain successful running the ball as teams shift to playing more Man- and I see Cowings w some dumps/screens and Jennings being key to beating that..... perhaps Pearsall too as his reputation is that he can defeat Man coverage.
DeleteIf the 9ers happen to lose and with CMC, and Aiyuk out, Kittle, Deebo and Jennings possibly out The chances of that seem pretty strong. I see them trading a few players to make room for the 60 million dollar man. .
ReplyDeleteI see them maybe grabbing a DT if it makes sense........ maybe a Corner for depth if they can replace Ward with them next year- or if they cannot re-sign Lenoir. I don't believe they will become sellers though.
DeleteI thought Johnnydel was excellent, too. Shanahan called enough potentially successful plays for us to win if the receivers and Purdy didn't screw up.
ReplyDeleteBrock's not even looking for Mason -- even when Mason was the hot receiver including missing a potential touchdown when Masson was wide open. And it's a recurrent theme. Too bad no reporter asks Brock or Kyle why Mason is ignored.
Might somewhat be a trust issue. If that was CMC, doubt he would be ignored as much.
DeleteBut what does that mean? Trust. We're not talking about an inability to get open. He's open. Throw the ball. Mason's standing there open. He hasn't been dropping passes. Purdy's under pressure and he misses a possible TD because he won't throw to his hot receiver -- week after week. OK. Brock. Kyle. Why don't you trust him? Anybody on the blog, why shouldn't he be trusted?
DeleteAeneas Peebles, DT, Va Tech, only IDL near top (No. 8 in CFB) of "pass rush win rate" rankings among bunch of EDGE prospects at 22.2%, rare height for a 3t.
ReplyDeleteRazor
ReplyDeleteRE Aeneas Peebles: What round do you see him being drafted?
Has good first-step quickness and natural pass-rushing skills, but
at 6' 1" X 290 he's Undersized for a DT. Can he handle double teams in the NFL?
I have him being drafted in the 5th Rd
5th or 4th round sounds about right.
DeleteLatest 49ers rumour. BP's Father strongly dislikes KS. He defends his Son when ever BP plays poorly or the 9ers lose and throws KS under the bus for misusing his Son. If true could this spell problems in next years negotiations?
ReplyDeleteI would like to see more resources on this story, Coach. But if true, Purdy's dad is wrong to take this position. Dad has to realize that this is the NFL where you could be a hero one week and a goat (in the bad sense) the following. Even Steve Young got a mouthful from Bill Walsh when he didn't play well.
ReplyDeleteOldCoach / AES
ReplyDeleteIt should come as NO SURPRISE the skunk at the picnic is Grunt Cohn-head. Here he is stirring the $#(T on his YouTube channel!
* Did KS Show Up Brock Purdy After the 9ers Lost to KC?
* K S Appeared to Chew Out Brock Purdy in 49ers Locker Room.
* Has 9ers HC KS Hurt Brock Purdy's Confidence?
* Will the 9ers Replace KS with Ben Johnson Next Year?
* Are the 9er Players Tuning Out KS After Eight Years?
I can't find anything related to BP's dad complaining about KS,
so it's likely GC flunkies repeating his BS in their echo chamber.
GEEP,
ReplyDeleteIf baby Cohn is behind this, that would make perfect sense.
AES / OldCoach
ReplyDeleteFound the smoking gun! Grunt Cohn-Head on his YouTube Channel
"How 49ers QB Brock Purdy's Dad Allegedly Feels About Kyle Shanahan."
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O5H0DNP7RW4
Thanks GEEP. But I can't waste my time with baby Cohn. He singlehandedly destroyed a once great blog, that attracted great posters. I'm happy that Razor and Scooter along with Mid have given us this platform.
ReplyDeleteHere is what I expect to be a wildly unpopular idea. The 49ers do not resign BP then sign Sam Darnold for about 20 to 25 mill saving as much as 40 mill. Then they spend the money they saved on a G, OT and a C then with a hopefully healthy CMC and Mason go back to running the ball 40 times a game
ReplyDeleteOldCoach
Delete"Here is what I expect to be a wildly unpopular idea." Wildly unpopular is putting it mildly...lol
OldCoach- people get too emotional w the team...... Bochy played the vets too long, Kerr mis-managed Klay coming back from the achilles..... I actually like the idea, tbh, as I believe you should build from the lines back..... BUT, w baseball and basketball, oftentimes you need the stars to be succssful. Remember, they're also going to need Corners maybe too- Lenoir may fetch $15/yr the way he is playing.....
Deletedip,
DeleteThey are going to have to do some of it through the draft. Not spending 60 mill on a QB will give them the freedom to build/ rebuild any way they want.
Coach,
Deletethere is a reason that the top QBs get paid so much. But maybe the league has it all wrong and you are right. LOL
Anony,
DeleteI'm talking about BP specifically, so yes I understand why the "TOP" QBs get paid as much as they do. The problem is the next level QBs are now getting top money. I have said here many times that I consider BP good to possibly very good but not great. In the NFL the latest good to very good QB IE D. Presscott/T. Lawerence end up signing for record breaking money which kills their playoff chances. I am 90% sure BP will end up signing for a record breaking contract. I am also about 80% sure it will close the 49ers SB window for about the next 3 years. imho
Coach,
ReplyDeleteThat's very courageous. McCarthy is unproven and the success Sam is having leads me believe the Vikings will re-up him unless he completely falls off the map.
AES,
DeleteI wonder how much the Vikes are willing to pay him and for how long?
That will likely be determined on Darnold's play. If he continues to play well he could go to the highest bidder and press for a starting role elsewhere. Or the Vikings could sign him to a 2-3yr deal to keep him as a starter/help for McCarthy.
ReplyDeleteThe 49ers have backed up the Brinks truck for two broken WRs, a an RB perennially on IR, a DE who can't practice, an OT with one foot in retirement... AND are gonna have to pay Brock Purdy like a franchise QB next year.
ReplyDeleteIt's over. The 'Niners are done. Time for you guys to chill out for another 30 years. From 49ersUnderKSraBust😂😂😂

I’m looking forward to the Dallas game which we should win but who knows this year. Also looking for improvement from special teams. Go Niners.
ReplyDeleteReport: Two Patriots players among possible 49ers trade targets
ReplyDeletehttps://sports.yahoo.com/report-two-patriots-players-among-222329608.html
* Run-stuffing interior defensive lineman Davon Godchaux and ex-Niners wide receiver Kendrick Bourne among the possible targets," Russini wrote. "Two other former San Francisco players, defensive tackles DeForest Buckner [Colts] and D.J. Jones [Broncos], have been discussed internally by team decision-makers but I don’t get the sense Indy or Denver are open to moving either player."
