The stench of the last game is still in my nostrils. Will the 49ers clear the air? Not if they don't start making tackles. Not if they don't start running the football. Not if they allow their opponent to hang around. Not if they don't start playing smarter. This team seems to think they can just show up and teams are gonna fold. If they really want to save their playoff hopes and aspirations they had better wise up and bring everything they got into each and every game from here on out. From 2019 to 2023, the 49ers were 33-3 when they were plus-1 or better in turnover margin, including a perfect 21-0 when they were plus-2 or better. They were 16-4 when the turnover margin was even and 5-22 when they lost it. Can they do it or are they just an old team that's lost in their feelings of losing another Super Bowl? We'll find out tonight when they face a Seahawks team that's hungry and ready to put a fork in the 49ers 2024 season.
49ers inactives: QB Joshua Dobbs (third QB) CB Charvarius Ward K Jake Moody (ankle) LB Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles (calf) DT Jordan Elliott (knee) OL Ben Bartch TE Brayden Willis
Big game for both teams. One is trying to maintain their strangle hold on the NFC West while the other is trying to unseat them. Big time players with big time contracts need to bring their A game instead of their C game. Coaching staff needs to up their game too. Maybe KS needs to script the fourth quarter, he is fast becoming a "Choker". I think the world of KS but so many games lost in the fourth quarter is beginning to wear thin.
ReplyDeleteIf the game was only played 3Qtrs, Shanahan would be mentioned among the all-time great head coaches. But fortunately, he is still a top head coach and also young enough to exorcise his 4Qtr let downs.
ReplyDeleteMake or Break game for the Division. I will be paying special attention to a few things:
ReplyDelete1) How Brock plays against MacDonald's defense this time around. Got benched after 4 INTS last time vs Ravens, but I believe the young man has what it takes to shred their D.
2) How our DBs handles 3WR sets from Seattle. Are our corners upto it and can the safeties be disciplined?
3) Fred Warner gave a Rah-rah speech at 1-2 and we won against the Patriots, but then lost the next game. Fred openly said If I have to do it again (with so much on the line), we probably don't have the right guys.....so do we have the right guys or not? This game will tell us.
49ers say all the right words after the losses, but the proof is in the pudding. Each player has to take ownership of mistakes. That's not just acknowledging they made them, it's fixing them.
ReplyDeleteTime to show they've taken ownership and go on a run of clean, mistake free games.
#49ers elevated S Jaylen Mahoney and DT Evan Anderson from the practice squad for tonight’s game in Seattle.
ReplyDeleteI was one of those concerned about having my kicker kick off under these new rules due to the risk of injury making a tackle. Hate to say I told you so, but either kick it out of the endzone every single time, or have another player kick off. I wish they would have listened to me.
ReplyDeleteKick it out of the end zone every time. Don't run the risk of a big negative play or injury for the sake of a few yards on average.
DeleteI agree with you both. Just kick it out of the endzone. But it would be interesting to see how many kickers have been injured under the new KO alignment.
ReplyDeleteThat's at least 2 now for Kyle Shanahan.
DeleteC. Ward listed as out of tonight's game.
ReplyDeleteThat was a scary pass but outstanding result.
ReplyDelete2nd half woes are becoming a big issue.
ReplyDeleteFire the SP team's coach asap.
I’d prefer to fire the players not making tackles. I hope there is some accountability. This needs to stop.
DeleteThe onus is on the defense let's see if they can make a big play. Hold a lead.
ReplyDeleteWell needed win. Now get 49ers players healthy.
ReplyDeleteYes, getting people healthy is the biggest need. 483 yards of offense is spectacular. The defense also played very well with the exception of a couple of plays, but no complaints with all the injuries in the back field.
DeleteThis is starting to look like a very good rookie haul for the 49ers. Puni, Mustafa, Green are making the most out of their opportunity.
ReplyDeleteGerrendo
ReplyDeleteYes sir, thanks my bad.
ReplyDeleteNo problem, you’re spot on with all those guys. Cowing looks like a player also and we have yet to see Pearsall. I just wish we had another OT or big DT rookie also.
DeleteBosa played his best game of the season.
ReplyDeleteYep. 14 pressures, but more than that, in 4Q, on one drive, he made plays on all 3 downs and wrecked it.
DeleteSam O and Kalia D were inconsistent but getting good penetration.
Yup. Cowing and Pearsall could be added to this haul before the season is over. John Lynch could be a front runner for GM OTY Award if this group continues to excell.
ReplyDeleteJust watched the game. Great to come away with the W after the previous two painful division losses, though again made harder work of it than you'd like in the second half.
ReplyDeleteA few key things stood out to me in this one.
First, didn't cough up the ball, while came away with a few turnovers (and should have had another). Winning the turnover battle is a good step in the right direction.
Second, they again had issues in the red zone in the first half, which kept the Seahawks in the game despite dominating play. But they put the game away in the second half by working out some ways to have success down there. Need to keep that up moving forward.
Third, 49ers must find a way to kick the ball out of the end zone. Allowing returns is hurting them way too much.
Overall, there were definitely positive signs of turning things around, though again letting a large lead slip was worrying. Offense seemed to sputter again when the Seahawks started mounting a comeback, and defense fell away again in the second half.
Still a ways to go. Chiefs will be a tough test.
The 49ers offense used 21 personnel on 47% of their plays, gaining 317 yards and 2 touchdowns, the most such yards in a game by any offense in the NGS era (since 2016).

ReplyDeleteRazor or anyone on the blog: Is this IR list still accurate?
ReplyDelete* XX Latest info on when these IR players will return?

XX Talanoa Hufanga, S — Wrist — Eligible to Return Week 11
XX Yetur Gross-Matso, EDGE — Knee — Eligible to Return Week 10
XX Christian McCaffrey, RB — Achilles — Eligible to Return Week 6
XX Ricky Pearsall, WR — Chest — Eligible to Return Week 5
XX Jon Feliciano, C — Knee — Eligible to Return Week 5
Curtis Robinson, LB — Knee — Out for Season
Javon Hargrave, DT — Triceps — Out for Season

++ Ambry Thomas, DB — Forearm — Eligible to Return Week 5
++ Drake Jackson, EDGE — Knee — Out for Season
Only guys I would add are Greenlaw (PUP) and Jake Moody (Still on 53).
DeleteBoth should be activated by Week 11.
Looks like it to me.
ReplyDeleteThe big area of concern is also the STs coverage. Personally, I was not surprised to see Shanualt take the KO back for a TD. It seems like all the teams the 49ers have played have been on the cusp from doing the same. Not sure what the answer is except for kicking the ball out of the EZ. But that's not going to happen on every KO.
ReplyDeleteNice to see that the 49ers ran play action on 24% of pass plays last night - before that it they were at 17.8 percent on average for the season.
ReplyDeleteYes, glad to see Play Action and Brock was still playing at a high level when turning his back to the D.
DeleteSome of those play action throws were high anticipation/Ball out within a sec throws.
He even had a No-Look pass, though I forgot if that particular play was PA or not.
I guess we will see kicker #3 next week, too bad Wright looked pretty damn good on his extra points and FGs but he didn't have the leg to kick off deep and it cost him and the team. Floyd and Bosa both got consistent pressure but Smith was able to step up and get away from pressure. The 49ers really missed Hargrave and Gross-Matos last night. It may not be pretty next game versus KC.
ReplyDeleteNice win yesterday, didn't look convincing, but I'll take it. Great to see the Rookies shine. I've said this earlier, but I think this might be the best draft class after 2019.
ReplyDeleteEven if we lose against KC next week, we should win against the cowboys and go 4-4 into the bye.....rest up and go on a run! 11-6 or 12-5 still attainable.
Even against KC, we can make a game of it. KC too going through its set of injuries and we are at home.
+1
DeleteRookies sure do look good. Keep progressing at this rate and it will make it a lot easier to say goodbye to a few vets at the end of the season.
DeleteYeah, I think some vets they will definitely say goodbye to are Campbell, Banks, Ward, Dobbs, DFF and Saubert.
DeleteAmong these, Campbell is just a bad bad signing. Banks, Dobbs and Ward will have comp-pick implications. For DFF, I just don't see the ST value now that we have Bethune and Graham.
Since the safety market is soft, I think we will keep Huf. It will be awesome if we get to keep DeMo, but he will be pricey if we pay him as an outside CB instead of Nickel.
I'm not sure about Yiadom and Rock-Ya-Sin. Since Ambry is still on IR, we might have him next year. For some reason, this coaching staff is enamored with Ambry.
We might still go after vet min/1 year deals for players such as E-Man to fill out the depth at CB or end up just keeping Ya-Sin/Yiadom. A lot depends on how we finish this year and how these players perform for the rest of this year.
I think it depends on the asking prices- per Hufunga and Ward, namely...... and Banks. I hope they draft a Corner high, along with the never-ending pursuit at DE - thin at S too
DeleteWard, Banks and Hufanga were the main ones I was thinking... as well as Deebo, pending how Pearsall and Cowing get on this season.
DeleteYes, safety market tends to be soft, but if Brown and Mustapha both show they can handle the job I think they'll be fine letting Hufanga go, and only bring him back if it's for around vet minimum.
The others are just depth guys that get churned after awhile.
DeMo I think will be a priority to re-sign this offseason.
diptown,
DeleteI agree. I think we will spend a top100 pick on Corner. Dline difference maker has gotta be the 1st round pick. Those guys are rare to get in FA. Unless we get creative and cut Hargrave post June 1 and trade 1st rounder for a proven edge.
Scooter_McG,
IMO, I think 49ers tend to value their "Gold Helmet" guys. Huf is one. Mckivitz was one too and they gave him a 2nd contract. Since Peters drafted Huf, he will have a good market and Washington/Houston/Tenessee will all be interested. Only way we don't resign him is if his play totally drops off.
I feel we need experience in the safety position. One externality of the Wilks firing is that Brown's play has significantly diminished.
Odum is signed through 2026. Odum, Huf, Mustapha and Brown will be 4 safeties in 2025 I think. Still a long way to go this season, and I could be way off the mark here.
Shanahan on Kicker Matthew Wright.
ReplyDelete"We're still waiting for his MRI to get back," Shanahan explained. "He did dislocate it—or it came out for a little bit. ... It went back in, but we've got to find out more on it when we get the MRI."
It's a good thing that Kickers are always available. The STs coverage team may need to install a prevent defense similar to defending against a hail-mary pass at this rate, lol.
My way too early 2025 9er player draft watch list:
ReplyDeleteRd# 1: EDGE: JT Tuimoloau, Ohio St. 6' 5" X 269. 40 = 4.62s
Rd# 2: DT: Tylek Williams, Ohio St. 6' 3" X 327. 40 = 4.68s
Rd# 3A) CB: Domani Jackson Alabama, 6' 1" X 201. 40 = 4.28s
Rd# 3B) OT: Fernando Carmona, Arkansas, 6' 5" X 322. 40 = 5.15
* If anyone has a player you feel should be on the list, feel free to add them to the list.
I'm not across any of the potential draft class yet, but one thing I really liked about the 49ers last draft is, for the most part, they put more of an emphasis on attitude, college production, experience and level of play and less on athletic traits (bar Guerendo).
DeleteSo far it appears to have been a good approach. I hope they continue with it.
Geep,
DeleteWay too early is a giant understatement but I will play along. I have 2 opinions about next years draft. #1 if they don't draft a C or OT in the first round I might just lose my mind. #2 instead of focusing on 40 times they seem to have put far more weight on 3 cone times.
Scooter / OldCoach
Delete* If you Google an NFL Scouting Report on the players I've listed, IMO, all 4 meet your criteria.
* OC: While I agree with you, I'd be shocked if the 9ers draft a C or OT in Rd# 1. If you recall what Foerster said about when
the 9ers intend to draft O-Line?
That Foerster dude seems to know what he's doing.
DeleteSeems to me Zakelj is their center of the future.
ReplyDeleteYears ago when KS first started, it seemed that getting a good center was very important. They paid Weston Richburg who everybody said was ideal for KS' system. Richburg didn't last due to injuries. Did subsequently paying so much for TW preclude putting emphasis on the center position?
DeleteCubus,
DeleteThe thing with centers is that right off the bat, you have a Supply-Demand mismatch. The league has 64 starting tackles and 64 starting guards, but only 32 centers. So they rarely become available, and even if they do, the asking price is usually high.
In addition, with our scheme, centers need to be highly intelligent, agile and they set the protection schemes. So they need familiarity with outside zone.
That is why I agree with Razor.... A guy like Zakelj or Nugent will be center of the future, once they have a couple of years in the system.
IMHO, Zakelj has steadily improved in the run game (pass game still needs improvement), that is why we have to sign him to a long term deal like Mckivitz, before he hits FA and his market value explodes.
I'm with you cubus, I find it really odd how they put an emphasis on the position getting Richburg then Mack, but now seeming to have deprioritised the position. Not sure what the reason is.
DeleteThey can't afford a high priced center and thats why they've been developing Zakelj. They drafted McGlinchey high at RT and they paid for a Center but the team wasn't as filled out then as it is now.
DeleteFoerster knows what he's doing and he's candid. Everything about him is praiseworthy, but he can't make a very good/great O-line with what he begins with. It's more important now to protect Purdy than to accumulate offensive weapons.
DeleteLee, if you remember Bobb McKittrick did the same thing that Foerster has been able to do.
DeleteRazor,
DeleteI don't remember one McKittrick line any where near as bad as this years O line. Thats not a criticism of Foerster he is not a miracle worker.
I used to get upset with McKittrick when Steve Young was running for his life. Our line was light 285-290? while Dallas'
Deleteline was huge. But really we had Sapolu and Barton and Wallace, and it was a good line, I just wanted five Sumo wrestlers to protect the QB -- feeling the same way now. What if we could have Jeremy Newberry at center, but we'd have to sacrifice some proficiency in the zone blocking -- would Shanahan go for it?
OldCoach, McKittrick never got high draft picks with the exception of Harris Barton. Foerster has coached two SB OL's with Shanahan so maybe he is a Miracle Man like Bobb was.
DeleteLee, give me Newberry's nasty attitude at the Center position. Poor guys body just couldn't hold up.
DeleteRazor,
DeleteI agree McKittrick did miracles with some low draft picks and FAs but a large part of the O lines foundation through out the 80s and early 90s were reasonably high picks (3rd round and above) Randy Cross early Rd 2, Harris Barton Rd1, Guy McIntyre Rd3, Jeremy Newberry Rd2 Kieth Fahnhorst early Rd 2 and Ray Brown who was an 8th RD pick by the Cardinals but was a star by the time the 9ers signed him.
Razor, I'm with you. Newberry any day. Loved him
DeleteThe Richburg time was with a different time and place and has no Bering on today’s team. That was a very bad team with a lot of cap space. Kyle was trying to get better players at every position. As Forester says you pay the guys who touch the ball.
ReplyDeleteDeebo Samuel is the only WR in #NFL history with 20 RECEIVING TD’s & 20 RUSHING TD’s‼️🤯
ReplyDeleteHe's "that guy!"
ReplyDeleteNick Bosa has 7 games with 10+ pressures since he entered the NFL in 2019, per
ReplyDelete@NextGenStats
.
No other player has more than 4 such games over that span.
Derrick Harmon IDL, Oregon, is he a schematic fit? I really like him.
ReplyDeleteDerrick Harmon IDL, Oregon * A former Michigan St. DT. Transferred to Oregon in the offseason.
Delete* The ability to generate disruption as a pass rusher has
been very impressive. He has 3 sacks and 25 pressures. He ranks 3rd in the nation, the most of any interior D-linemen.
* The only reported negative to his game is his tackling.
* I have him listed as a late 1st Rd draft pick. If his tackling
continues to improve this season, he will likely move up into
mid Rd 1.
Razor: Question
DeleteWhat position do you see the 9ers drafting in Rd #1, Rd #2 and Rd #3?
DL, OL, TE
Delete4 picks in first 3 rounds again next draft, so have options.
DeleteSo hard to predict this far out which way they'll go. Lots can happen in terms of who they keep, let go and sign in FA. Also a lot of football left between now and then for guys to play themselves in or out of future roles.
But if I had to guess right now, I'd say the team will look at DL, OT, LB and CB.
Gunnar Helm, TE, Texas looks intriguing to me.
DeleteRazor
DeleteTexas TE Helm: Had his best game against Michigan. He led Texas with 7 receptions for 98 yards and a TD.
* IMO, he out played Mich TE Colston Loveland, considered the top TE draft pick in the 2025 draft.
* Draft boards still have him listed as a blocking TE and a late 4th to 5th Rd draft pick. If he continues producing on offense, he'll move up draft boards. (3rd round)?
Yep, and if Scooter wants a CB I've got one for him:
DeleteUpton Stout, CB, WKU 5'8 190lbs. day 1 starter at Ni
I'd take him just for the name. Give me a stout defender any day.
DeleteHa!
DeletePurdy has dropped his turnover worthy play rate (PFF) while doubling his tight window throw rate (Next Gen).
ReplyDeleteTO worthy play %:
2023 - 3.2%
2024 - 1.8%
TW throw attempts:
2023 - 3.6/game
2024 - 7.2/game
Glad to see the TO worthy rate decline but somewhat mystified by the TW rate increase so much. It seems guys are having a harder time this year getting separation. I suppose this could partially be the result of Aiyuk starting the year not in football condition and not having McCaffrey.
ReplyDeleteTeams have also come to the conclusion that you can not play zone against the 49ers they murder zone D. Hopefully the eventual return of Pearsall and CMC will help Vs man D.
DeleteRaiders reportedly trade All-Pro WR Davante Adams to Jets, ending months of speculation

Experienced Optimism
ReplyDeleteThe optimism part of me says Niners win against the Chiefs.
The experience part of me says hey...not so fast.
I'm more like....Irrational Exuberance, tempered by cautious Optimism......lol
ReplyDeleteNiners have signed Anders Carlson. Hope he can kick off into the end zone.
ReplyDeletehttps://www.profootballrumors.com/2024/10/49ers-to-sign-k-anders-carlson
George
ReplyDeleteJL must see something in Carlson that I DO NOT!
* Here are some insights from NFL scouting reports for Anders Carlson, the kicker drafted by the Green Bay Packers in 2023:
* Accuracy: Carlson struggled with consistency on mid-range kicks and was inaccurate from long distance. He made only 5 of 17 field goals from 50-plus yards in 2022.
* Kickoff depth: Carlson struggled to find consistent kickoff depth in 2022.
* Operation time: Carlson's slow operation time led to blocked kicks.
* Field goal attempts: Carlson's accuracy on field goal attempts was 53.6% for 40-plus-yard attempts.
* Extra points: Carlson's 87.2% on point-after tries was the worst among 25 qualifying kickers in 2023.
* Missed kicks: Carlson missed more extra points (6) and total kicks (13) than anyone in football in 2023.
* GB cut Carlson after his 1st season, instead choosing to lean on veteran Greg Joseph.
Brock Purdy has averaged twice as many air yards per attempt (10.0) than Patrick Mahomes (5.0) this season.
ReplyDeletePurdy has averaged 9.1 air yds per completion compared to Mahomes’ 3.6.
Purdy has the lowest pct of pass yds from YAC (32.8) in the NFL. Mahomes has the highest (66.7).
Per
@NextGenStats
Purdy is showing this year he belongs in the great to elite tier of QB. 49ers are in good hands.
DeleteI was disappointed that Purdy couldn't throw the ball over Chris Jones' head to Jennings for the SB win. I love Purdy's great play. But had he completed that pass to Jennings in overtime for the win - well, that's where legends are made, imho.

ReplyDeleteQUESTION FOR THE BLOG:
ReplyDeleteWith WR Adams traded, 27 y/o Maxx Crosby is the sole star left on the Raider team. The 3 time Pro Bowler and 2-time 2nd team All-Pro is coming off consecutive double-digit sack campaigns (12.5 and 14.5, respectively) with 5.5 to his name through 5 games this year.
SHOULD THE 9ERS TRY TO TRADE FOR HIM?
The 9ers have been hammered by injuries on both sides of the ball. Hargrave is out for the season and Yetur Gross-Matos on IR, Crosby would give the 9ers a reliable star to complement Bosa.
According to Spotrac, Crosby's 2024 salary is $24.5 Mil. base salary and $100K in workout bonus.
I'm more likely to have a girlfriend like Davis has than Davis trading Crosby to the San Francisco 49ers. Who would I trade for? Azeez Ojulari is the one....
DeleteI agree. The Raiders not trading their best player. The Jaguars DE Trevon Walker might be available at the trade deadline in a few weeks. Jacksonville is a hot mess and could be ready to have a fire sale.
DeleteRazor
DeleteOjulari has been plagued by leg injuries. Do the 9ers need to trade for a situational edge rusher that spends time on IR?
AES
Davis needs the money, thats why he sold 10% interest in
the Raiders to Tom Brady and Tom Wagner, the co-founder of Knighthead Capital Management.
The reason the the NFL’s finance committee took so long to
approve deal is it raised concerns that Davis was giving Brady and Wagner too much of a discount. The NY Post reported earlier this month that Brady and Wagner have since increased their offer to “far more money than originally proposed.”
That's good stuff GEEP. The Raiders are the NFLs worse bi-polar team. They could beat a good team by 20 pts and then lose to a bad team by 30 pts the following week.
DeleteOjulari for a 4th or 5th would be terrific in my mind.
DeleteAnderson was the #49ers top-graded defensive player vs. Seattle. He’s racked up a sack and three hurries in 14 pass rushes in his two games this season.
ReplyDeleteRazor: Correct me if I'm wrong....BUT.....My understanding is that
ReplyDeleteDT Evan Anderson has been activated from the PS on several occasions (for 1 game) but he's not listed as a full-time active
player? He's still on the 9ers' PS, not on the active 53-man roster?
Correct. Time to rectify that.
DeleteAnderson is one of the guys that could potentially change the 49ers draft needs next year, if he can keep playing the way he has with more snaps.
Razor / Scooter:
DeleteRazor: Tks for the info, didn't realize he was out of call up's.
Scooter: I agree, he has the size and appears to be capable of developing into the run stopper the 9ers need after Armstead left for the Jaguars. As a 9er UDFA, he could be a 9er steal.
Razor,
DeleteDon't all PS players get 3 call-ups? I think he has one more since he has been called up twice, IIRC.
Irrespective I agree.... Mr. Anderson belongs in the 53.
Mug,
DeleteYou are correct a player can be brought up 3 times before he he has to be added to the 53
Anderson's next call up will be his 3rd so he will need to be added to the 53 unless they go with McGill.
DeleteSounds like Feliciano may be at full strength by the bye week. Hopefully we will have a new starting center by the T.B. game
ReplyDeleteOldCoach....Or anyone that knows:
Delete* KS told reporters that Jennings would be held out of practice for the day while dealing with a hip injury.
* Does anyone know the extent of his hip injury?
I've heard the same thing as you.
DeleteCollins didn't practice yesterday either. I anticipate Spags playing a lot of Man again and hope that we can either utilize Jennings more or maybe get Cowing on the field for some end-arounds- I think I would use some WR screens to Deebo vs sending him inside. I also sense that Purdy saying he has to do more is realizing that his scrambling ability can be the difference.
DeleteThe NYGs have signed OL Chris Hubbard off the 49ers PS. That leaves only two Olnmen on the PS. Could the 49ers address this at the trade deadline? I believe that they take a serious look at the defensive side because they have not locked down a DE opposite Bosa.
ReplyDeleteTBD
Floyd has been fine. What they lack at the moment is depth on the DL.
DeleteFloyd has been average and far from the level of previous years. PFF rates him at 57.3 overall. Those numbers are nothing to write home about. Perhaps Floyd can step it up going forward.
ReplyDeleteThat rating seems harsh.
Delete18 pressures and 2 sacks in 6 games, pressure rate of 11%, is a decent rate for the complementary guy. Not a lot of immediate/ quick pressures, but that's never been his game. He's an effort guy.
He's not set the world on fire, but nor should he have been expected to. He's playing like his usual self and that's a decent player.
Scooter
DeleteDo you see the 9ers drafting an EDGE rusher, or a DT with their
1st Rd. 2025 draft pick?
Either of those is a possibility.
DeleteI believe PFF has him at 3 sacks which pro-rated thru 17 games puts him in the area of 9 sacks. That would be nice if that projection is reached.

Nice. Now go get some Ring Bling. Mahomes is at 15 on this list. I doubt that the KC fans care.
ReplyDelete* Jennings is out for the KC game. He's been ruled out due to the hip injury that kept him from practicing this week. It's the first missed game of the season for Jennings, who has 25 catches for 404 yards and three touchdowns on the season.
ReplyDelete* Ricky Pearsall will be activated and play in his first NFL game. He's missed the first 6 games of the year after being shot in the chest.
* Kickers Jake Moody (ankle) and Matthew Wright (shoulder) have been ruled out. Wright will go on IR. Anders Carlson will be elevated from the PS to do the kicking. With the 9ers problem scoring in the red zone, Calsons' field goal success may determine the winner?
* DT Kevin Givens (groin) and cornerback Darrell Luter (pelvis) are listed as questionable. RB Jordan Mason (shoulder) is ok. He'll play.
WHAT THE 9ERS MUST DO TO BEAT KC:
ReplyDelete* Control Mahomes and stop his WR's. The KC offense ranks 4th in the NFL with 801 yards after the catch!
* WR Rashee Rice carried much of the weight for KC with 185 YAC, but he’s out for the season with a knee injury. Behind him is the fastest receiver in the league, Xavier Worthy, with 108, Travis Kelce with 94 and Juju Smith-Schuster at 90, with 81
* The 9ers have struggled with receivers gaining yardage after the catch, allowing 724 YAC, the 6th most in the league. They allowed a season-high 171 YAC in Week 6 against Seattle and has allowed at least 100 YAC in five of its six games this season.
* KC has turned the ball over on 16.0 % of its drives, the 4th highest rate in the league. This number comes with a caveat, 6 of the 8 TO's have been Mahomes INT's. Those 6 INT's are tied for the most the QB has thrown in the 1st 5 games of a season, with the other being the 2021 season.
The 4th qtr is where Mahomes has thrown the fewest passes, it’s also the only qtr Mahomes hasn’t thrown an int. He’s thrown 3 in the 1st qtr, 1 in the 2nd, and 2 in the 3rd but has kept a clean slate in the 4th. And that’s important for a team that's played 4 games decided by 7 or fewer points.
* The KC offense has also received some help from their defense on TO's. The KC defense has allowed only 3 TD's on those 8 TO's, allowing just as many field goals after a giveaway. Not only has Mahomes and the Chiefs’ offense not turned the ball over in clutch situations, but the defense doesn’t allow the mistake to be turned into 6 points.
* The 9er defense has forced 11 TO's this season, but has only managed 4 TD's on drives after a turnover. If Mahomes is turnover-happy on Sunday, the 9ers offense will need TD's over field goals to keep the Chiefs at bay before the 4th quarter.
* As previously stated, Calsons' field goal success may determine
WHO wins the game...KC or the 9ers!
Greg Cosell, “Purdy's in the gun over 80% of his drop backs. This is not the old school Niners.”
ReplyDeleteRazor,
ReplyDeleteDo you have a theory as to why the big change?
OldCoach
ReplyDeleteIMO, Purdy is in the shotgun, using less play action, because Shanahan strategically chooses to utilize play action only against specific defensive looks, particularly when facing defenses that are NOT heavily blitzing. KS changed his offense scheme because he trusts Purdy in the gun, to quickly read and react to defensive adjustments and blitz packages! He's prioritizing BP's ability to make quick decisions over the deception of play action, when he's facing aggressive defenses!
* Some people, including myself, question if KS will call less running plays & more passing? Will the 9er O-Line utilize less zone blocking and do more power blocking? Also, is the O-Line capable of giving BP the time to find his receivers without scrambling and exposing
him to being injured?
* KC's Spagnuolo is known to run a blitz heavy defense, so we'll see
if KS runs play action, or not. And if the 9ers O-line can protect BP.
