Daniel Bullocks

Coach Bullocks has the best secondary the 49ers have had in the Shanahan era. They added a CB and a S from the draft and signed Yiadom and Ya-Sin through F/A. Hufanga is coming off a torn ACL suffered early last year. I expect them to keep the following 5 CB's: Ward, Yiadom, Lenoir, Green and Luter Jr. Ambry Thomas could be moved to the Commanders and Womack to the practice squad if he were to clear waivers.  Looks like the 4 S's are pretty much cut and dry: Hufanga, Brown, Odum, Mustapha. If Hufanga weren't able to be ready, depending on how the rookie looks, they could look to sign a S like Simmons through F/A or bring back Gibson. How do you guys see it?

  1. "Coach Bullocks has the best secondary the 49ers have had in the Shanahan era." I'll have to agree.
Even if Hufanga doesn't make it back for the Jets game, Brown can fill in for him at S, with little drop off, until he returns.
I'd also add, with Floyd replacing Chase Young at DE, the D-line will be better at stopping the run and pressuring the QB. That will also help the secondary.

  2. Yeah, definitely looks like the best CB group they've had under Shanahan. Good and deep.

Safety has me a little worried though. Depends on how Mustapha goes. I think he'll be just fine, in fact I think he's going to be a star, but is risky heading into the season banking on him and Brown, and Hufanga making a perfect recovery.

  3. 49ers dropped passes the past 5 seasons (as a team):

    • 2019: 28
    • 2020: 34
    • 2021: 26
    • 2022: 37
    • 2023: 9
I'll never underestimate the value of throwing a catchable ball ever again.

    1. Absolutely amazing. Most amazing result of any draft, possibly in any sport. And he’s probably going to get better.

  5. The negotiations between the 49ers and BA seem different than those with Kittle, Deebo and Bosa. I just get a strong feeling that both sides are where they are at and they are not going to move. It has a lot to do with all of the other WRs and what they have settled for. If you listen to D. Lombardi it sounds like no problem Aiyuk will be back with the 9ers. Matt Maiocco on KNBR today said he thinks the 9ers are just waiting for the best offer from another team. I would rather see them trade Deebo but I do think trading one of them is the best move cap wise.

    1. In my opinion this is pretty serious. They need him for this season, and one can say that they hold all the cards in the sense that they can hold him to his contract, but that’s not “the Niner way.” It’s a threat to the culture and imo time for the influencers in the locker room to try to persuade him to take what Lynch is offering for the good of the team.

    2. Geo,
I don't think players get involved in other players contracts. It would be just a little disingenuous for a player to say to another player, I got mine now you should take less.

  6. I agree that they’d prefer not to do that.

Out of curiosity, do you believe the 9ers will be successful extending Aiyuk with a new contract? If so, do you expect it to be for 5 years?
How much will the total be and also the guaranteed money.
    * NOTE: Justin Jefferson just reset the WR market and replaced the 9ers Nick Bosa as the NFL's highest-paid non-quarterback The Vikings signed Jefferson to a 4 year, $140 million contract extension, averaging $35 million per year, including $110 Mil in guaranteed money with $88.7 million due at signing.
    * A.J. Brown signed a 3-year, $96 Mil. extension with the Eagles, averaging $32 Mil. P/Y. Brown set a WR record with $84 million in guarantees. The $51 million fully guaranteed

Prior to the AJ Brown signing, I believed the most the 9ers would settle for was for 4 years, $26 Mil to $26.5 Mil P/Y plus his 2024
$14.1 Mil. with ~$60 to $65 Mil guaranteed.
    2024.

  8. Geep,
Since the SB I have had this feeling that BA isn't all that high on returning to the 49ers. He is using his inflexible negotiation tactics to force the 49ers to trade him. His quotes in the locker room after the SB the quotes by his friend and his girl friend just struck me as someone who is unhappy where he is.

    1. I think he's fine staying with the 49ers, but the money is his chief motivator.

Going to be interesting to see if the 49ers budge.

  9. Like Bosa, this could drag on through TC. But with Bosa, he was a DPOTY. Aiyuk has yet to achieve that type of status. I wonder if 26-27M might satisfy both parties. But at those numbers the 49ers might be looking at 3 yrs extension and a hefty guarantee.
Also, if the team feels that Pearsall and Cowing can help mitigate the loss of Aiyuk this season with a strong TC showing, that might put some urgency on Aiyuk's decision. Either way, this is stacking up to be the storyline going forward.

    1. At this juncture I think the 49ers plan is to hold firm on their valuation, and if Aiyuk won't take it then force him to play under the 5th year option then look to tag and trade next offseason.

Yea, I agree with you. I would add that if Ricky Pearsall progresses, it will only add weight to that opinion. and the
9ers could use the 120% franchise tag in 2025 and Aiyuk's salary would be ~$26.2 Mil...If I understand it correctly....

    3. Geep,
I think it would depend on what happens to WR salaries between now and then.

    4. I don't think the plan would be to tag Aiyuk and keep him. Just a mechanism to get something more than a comp 3rd from him in 2026.

  10. Per PFF: On balls targeted 20 or more yards downfield, #49ers QB Brock Purdy completed 30-of-53 passes for 956 yards, 11 touchdowns & one interception while having a big-time throw to turnover-worthy play ratio of 17-to-2.

With a full off season to work on improving, BP will only get better at his reads. The only question in my mind is:
      * How well will C Brendel hold up and how long will it take for the O-Line to jell if they have to replace him, and with WHO? Puni?
      * Who ends up playing RG, Feliciano? Puni?

  11. Apparently Trent Williams wants his contract amended.

Can't say I am surprised, as he is now probably underpaid relative to the market, but an issue for the 49ers is that he already has a HUGE amount of deferred/ prorated cap hits, with $10.8M per year already in prorated bonus for the next 2 years, before dropping to $4.8M in 2026 with $3.6M left over after his current deal voids.

Still, on the positive side, it can help to free up some money now and may mean he is at least committing to another two years.

    1. They'll do it if Williams can convince them he isn't retiring after this year.

  12. Career leaders in QB hits per game (since 2006)

    1. JJ Watt -- 2.1
    2. Nick Bosa -- 2.1
    3. TJ Watt -- 1.9
    4. Micah Parsons -- 1.8
    6. Myles Garret -- 1.7

  13. Maiocco is reporting that the 49ers latest offer to BA is 28 mill per season and he has turned down the offer. Do they sign him, force him to play under his current contract or trade him likely for no where near market value. If they force him to play how is his play affected? Does it negatively effect team chemistry?

  14. It's a gamble for Aiyuk to turn down this kind of money if there's truth to this report. I can see Aiyuk using Jefferson as a baseline for a larger payday. But, he's not in Jefferson's air-space. Jefferson is hands down the best WR in football. Aiyuk, is not there yet. Aiyuk's gamble could backfire with this latest demand. Imo, 27m was my highest bid. Now, the gloves are off.
