Trust Your Board

The last time the 49ers drafted at 31 they moved up to 25 for Brandon Aiyuk. It worked out well for them so I decided to take that strategy into this draft to see how it would play out. Tell me what you think.

  1. Only thing I'd argue against is doubling up at TE in back to back drafts.

    1. Agreed. Made a mistake there. Probably should have gone with a Free Safety in the 4th.

Question: What draft board are you using? After going skiing, looks like lots of changes made (where players are drafted), and mine is out of date.

  2. I was thinking the same regarding TE. The one constant I've noticed in the last couple of mocks is Theo Johnson. I did a comp between him and Latu and Willis (video highlights) and there wasn't much in Johnson' game that put him head & shoulders above Willis and Latu.
If the 49ers want a TE that can be a good inline player, Tip Reiman fits the bill, imho.

  3. After reading KS's comments on how happy he is with the returning 49ers O line, I believe that comment is a guarantee that they will pick an O lineman early. Like they say, how can you tell if a HC/GM is lying during draft season? His lips are moving.

  4. Coach,
Here's a question off the beaten path. When do the 49ers take a look at an eventual heir-apparent for Juice? There are 3 candidates that can be considered in this draft who might catch some interest, imo.
Holker, Knox and Westover have the size and catching ability to be an eventual successor. I haven't seen anything on their blocking, though.

  5. Coach,
Forgot to mention that 3 players above are TE. But, so was Juscecky in college.

    1. AES,
I think Juice will be around for 2 more seasons but if he is injured I think the future FB is already under contract. Brock Wright

    2. The Lions matched the offer so Brock Wright is no longer under contract, lol!

  6. Malik Washington had the most forced miss tackles with 35 per PFF. Corley? 15

    Tip Reiman, anyone?

    1. I think Shanahan would prefer Bell over Reiman.

    2. Sorry Razor. I didn't see your earlier report on Wright.

The 49ers are signing former Green Bay Packers RB Patrick Taylor Jr. to a one-year deal, per source

  11. Rosengarten gave up zero sacks last year protecting his lefty quarterback.

  12. Stefon Diggs heading to Texans. Bills now have a big hole at WR.

  13. The Texans gave up a 2025 2nd round pick for Diggs and a 5th and 6th round 2024 pick. Not much, how much could the 9ers get back for Aiyuk?

    1. I think there are a few factors that go into the Diggs trade that mean it isn't a good benchmark for the compensation for Aiyuk. He's over 30, wasn't quite as good last season as previous years, had a huge cap hit, and has been stirring some issues since the end of the 2022 season.

Aiyuk on the other hand is an ascending player, only just turned 26 (so he should remain productive throughout his next contract, barring injury), and whoever trades for him can cost control him for a couple of seasons by pushing cap hits out.

  14. Patrick Taylor, Jr.: To me he seems to run and catch better than TDP. See college highlights below. One of their themes this offseason has been durability, so maybe this signals Mitchell will be traded or released.

    1. I like Blake Watson, RB, Memphis in round 6. Used to be a WR.

  15. Geo,
I think they will live and die with Mitchell for one more year. He is a UFA after next season and will be gone. I think Taylor will compete for the #4 RB spot with any RB draftees and UDFAs. Taylor is also a solid ST player. As good as Mason has looked KS doesn't seem to trust him.

. I have always wondered if he has a major weakness that I can't see, IE blitz pick up or his mastery of the playbook.

    1. Re Mason, it has to be something he is or isn't doing in practice, imo. And yeah, likely has to do with assignments.

    2. When Mason comes in the game everyone knows its a running play. They need to show him off in pre-season and see if they can flip him for a 5th.

    3. Since I first posted about Taylor above, I've read that Green Bay trusted him in pass protection versus Kyle not trusting Mason in that role.

    4. Matt LaFleur on Taylor in 2021:

"He's extremely intelligent. You should see his notebook, it's as good as some of our quarterbacks. He does such a great job and he's really tuned in to what we're trying to get accomplished and the why's behind it."

  16. Razor,
A 5th would be nice. Unless they make some trades I don't see them having any extra picks next year.
