Glass Eaters And Dancing Bears

Steve Sarkisian has a similar connection to the one Herm Edwards had with Shanahan when he was at Arizona State. Texas has a lot of gems in this draft and I see the 49ers targeting at least one if not more. I do think they'll sign a veteran S after the draft. This is one of the better classes in recent memory so it may be incumbant on Lynch to take as many bites of the apple as he can, given all the players on the final year of their contracts along with aging veterans.

  1. If they are looking to take as many bites of the apple as they can how about a trade back from 31 to some where in the area of 50 to 55 to get an extra 2nd, 3rd and 5th. Then using their first pick #50 to #55 for D'Andre Sweat/Kris Jenkins/ Ruke Orhorhoro who ever is available.

    1. Gotta have a partner but with Newton still on the board he's too good to pass on and will ultimately replace Hargrave.

    2. Razor,
There always seems to be at least one team that wants to jump back into the 1st round. They don't want to wait over night to see how things workout early in the 2nd round. I believe that at least one of the DTs I listed will still be available at 50-55. If they are really motivated they might even throw in a 25 1st as well as a 2nd and a 3rd this year. Does anyone else out there see a scenario where the 9ers trade back?

  2. I still think they'll be looking to add an OL before day 3. But that would be a good draft imo.

  3. Oregon's Brandon Dorlus' versatility is intriguing:

    ✅ 1,950 total reps
✅ 755 inside at DT or NT
    ✅ 522 as hand-down DE
    ✅ 673 as standup LEO/OLB

  6. The more I look at who the team has met with, and the moves they made in FA, the more convinced I become that the 49ers are very much taking a BPA approach to this draft. You can see from who they have met with (and who is on the roster) that the team is very interested in adding OT, IOL, DE, CB, TE and WR. They've met with guys up and down the board at those spots.

It also seems likely they'll add a DT, LB, S and RB, but the guys they have met at those positions are more day 3 guys.

Just getting back into the draft after skiing the past couple of weeks, but what you're posting, drafting the BPA make sense.
A question I have is: Does it seem like this mock draft some players are list on different draft boards are further apart than other years? Where you see different boards that will have the same player list in different rounds?

    3. GEEP, I have noticed that the past few years. I think there is now so much content out there, and so many draft 'experts', that we're getting a wider disparity.

Also, less guys providing content that are actually plugged in to league circles and what teams feel about players, and far more people providing content based on their own thoughts.

    1. Nice, Coach. But, I'm a little surprised with the OL picks towards to end of the draft. Also, I continue to see Theo Johnson on most 49ers mocks. Is there something about him that I'm missing? First 3 picks would make strong additions. I'm not familiar with the other players except for Johnson.

    2. Strong draft OC. As AES said, I would be a little concerned about not coming away with an OL until day 3. I'm also not a huge fan of Sweat. But overall that looks like a draft that would produce quite s few long term starters and contributers.

  8. AES,
Johnson is a great run blocker and ran faster at the combine than expected. The more I hear and read about this draft the more I think the 9ers may trade back. I have a feeling there may be a couple of teams that may be looking to jump back into the 1st round for the QB they have fallen in love with IE Pennix and Nix. They may be motivated trade partners and the 9ers might come away with a treasure trove of Picks.

  9. Just read an article about the Mayor of Dallas trying to lure the Chiefs to Dallas. The people of KC recently voted down a sales tax extension which would have funded a refurbishing of Arrow Head and a new stadium for the Royals. The Chiefs ownership has said relocation is on the table. I'm surprised Dallas isn't going after the Royals.

    1. Geep,
If they trade Mitchell I think they would draft a RB well before pick 251. I don't think they have that much confidence in Mason or Taylor

    2. Nice, mock GEEP. But I'm seriously starting to think that if the 49ers don't draft Theo Johnson, I'll be very disappointed, lol. Really like the attention given to the OL. For me, if the 49ers can trade to 12-20, I will go for either Fuaga of Fasanu. I believe either one of these guys could be day one starters.

    3. 19 days until the draft. Recently I have been posturing that the 49ers might trade back in the first round. How disappointed will you be if you watch the entirety of the first round only to have the 49ers trade out of the first round. Well at least it will make the 2nd and possibly the 3rd round that much more exciting.

    1) Mitchell is a waste of resources, spending too much time on IR.
    2) The 9ers have signed RB RB Patrick Taylor, a big RB who played for GB and will compete with Mason for a RB spot.
    3) I suspect you're underestimating RB Isaac Guerendo? Here is an
    overview By Lance Zierlein:
    https://www.nfl.com/prospects/isaac-guerendo/32004755-4554-7677-8f5d-c4e05fdb16a1
    * The transfer out of Wisconsin is an ascending running back prospect who was finally able to get enough carries to show what he's capable of. Guerendo is built like a prototypical Badger runner, with a thick, well-proportioned frame. He was a much more decisive runner in 2023, but his cut-and-go burst is fairly average. He's not sudden but runs with appropriate elusiveness, using subtle side-steps to continue the run's downhill momentum. He can catch it out of the backfield and protect his quarterback, making him a suitable three-down backup. Guerendo's size, skill set and demeanor are built for an NFL workload, and he could sneak into a bigger role in the future if he continues to progress.

    1. Geep,
One question about Guerendo, is he an outside zone RB? I don't see Taylor as a starter, I think he is more of a 3rd down back and special teamer and you have to see your #2 RB as a starter as he is only 1 play away from being a starter. As much as I like Mason for some reason I don't think KS sees him as a starter.

      Delete
    2. OldCoach
      * I'd agree with you that Taylor is not a starter. More a RB that provides depth in case of injury and understands the
9er system from playing at GB.
      * RE Mason: Don't know why he doesn't get more touches, likely because CMC and (when healthy), Mitchell does a
good job in relief (back up) to CMC?
      * RE Guerendo: Scouting report says he has an exceptional combination of size and athleticism at 6' 0" X 220 pounds, with a 4.33-second 40 yard, 41 ½ inch vertical, and strong agility numbers as well. He shows his explosiveness and burst when he identifies a viable running lane, accelerating hard towards the line of scrimmage. So the question is, can
he identify the hole to run thru (inside or outside)? TBD
The report also says he's a reliable receiver and his down
field blocking is good. The knock I see on him is he's never been a starter and is pass protection is suspect. How that
athleticism translates to the NFL is TBD, but for a late 7th round draft pick with that upside is, IMO, someone I'd be willing to take a chance on and I believe he's someone that
Bobby Turner could turn into a star!

  12. AES
IMO, it would be great to see the 9ers draft OT Fasanu.(top 10), or OT Fuaga (top 15)! I don't see the 9ers expending that much draft capitol to move up far enough to pick either one of them. And as JL said, they they're happy with the O-Line they have and they'll be better this season, having played together for the 2023 season!
And you know JL wouldn't lie (wink wink) about it, would he?

    ReplyDelete
  13. GEEP,
I did hear Shanahan and Lynch speak in positive terms re the current OL. The OL playing together can build a good core group, no doubt. But, at some point within the next 2-3 yrs barring an injury, Trent's age may start to show. Having a young player like Fashanu or Fuaga could prove to be a great investment down the road.

    ReplyDelete
  14. AES
You're preaching to the choir my friend! Unfortunately, other than LT, KS doesn't spend his first round draft pick resources on the O-Line.
While I don't believe OT Kiran Amegadjie will ever be as good as TW
I do believe both he and Brandon Coleman can become starters that
    fit the 9ers ABS system.
    * It appears that Aiyuk will refuse to play in 2024 if he doesn't get a new contract. It's being reported that he wants $30+ mil P/Y and we know the 9ers refuse to exceed $25 Mil P/Y. We also know that the
9ers hold all the cards and can use the franchise tag on him for 2025.
IMO, the 9ers will trade him if they can't work out a deal and use the
money for BP. So in anticipation of the 9ers trading Aiyuk, I used pick #17 on WR Bryan Thomas from LSU, as well as TE Theo Johnson from Penn St.
Out of curiosity, how do you see the Aiyuk situation playing out?

    1. I don't see the 49ers trading him.

I don't think they want to trade him, nor feel the need to trade him. So it will take a big offer to make them consider it, which I don't see any team being willing to make.

And they have shown they are willing to pay top dollar to keep a player in the past. I feel confident they will get a deal done. I know Lynch has suggested the team is content with letting him play out the last year of his current deal, but that sounds like negotiation tactics to me.

I'm not sure where your comment about the 49ers refusing to exceed $25M/yr comes from. That is probably where they are starting negotiations from, but as we've seen repeatedly with this team, they will budge to get a deal done.

As for Aiyuk asking for $30M+/yr - that rumour was largely started by Chad Ochocinco speculating what he thought he should get on a podcast while talking to Aiyuk (some others have speculated he could get that as well). Aiyuk never said that. He's not said that is what he is seeking. He just said he wants what he is worth/ has earned.

      Delete
    2. GEEP,
Aiyuk is too much of a valuable commodity for the 49ers to trade, imho. I believe that Aiyuk has yet to reach his ceiling because he's improved each year and hes only 26 YO. This may turn into a Bosa type attrition going into the preseason. But, I hope that the 49ers and BA come to an agreement before the season begins.

      Delete
    3. AES,
Do you think the 49ers should spend that much on Aiyuk along with Kittle, Deebo and Jennings salaries being that they throw the ball less than every team in the NFL except two. If they are going to run the ball as much as they do maybe they should save some money on the WR/TE room and spend a little more on O line and RBs.

    5. OC, this is something I brought up previously. Personally, no, I don't think so. But I think the 49ers feel differently.

  15. Coach,
I have a sense that Lynch will make a big move right before the draft. Chat Sports recently brought up an interesting take. He said that he could see the 49ers making a move that could put them in position to draft a high 1st rd player. He mentioned a few names as possibilities. But the one that caught my attention was TE, Brock Bowers.
    Now, that would be something.
