What If You Were The GM?

It's time to put that GM hat on and show us how its done. That's exactly what I've done in this mock draft. I went up and got that "foundational 8-10 year" OT that AES wanted and filled glaring holes in the depth at Safety, TE and DL. Added a Wide Receiver early in anticipation of Deebo moving on next year. I expect they'll want to move on from either Mitchell or Mason and Shipley reminds me of CMC. Let's hear your thoughts and see what you can do!

***TRADE ALERT***
  • San Francisco Receives:
    • 2024: Round 1, Pick 20
    Pittsburgh Receives:
    • 2024: Round 1, Pick 31
    •  2024: Round 4, Pick 132
    •  2025: Round 3

  1. 49ers sign an offer sheet on Det TE Brock Wright. Det now has a chance to beat the 9ers offer. Dets offer was for 2.95 mill. I really like Wright he is a great blocker, he can play both H-back or full back. I believe he is a better receiver than C. Woerner in 2022 he had 18 receptions and 4 TDs. I think with Kittle, Wright, Willis and Latu the 9ers are set at TE

    1. Wright played fullback/H-back at Notre Dame.

    2. There're several videos of him catching passes out of the backfield for the Lions, one of them a 51 yard TD. Smooth and sure handed operator.

  2. I don't think the 9ers need to trade up to get a 8 to 10 year starting O lineman. It just won't be at OT. I believe it will be at IOL. I'm hoping that Orhorhoro will be there at 63 then the rest of the draft will be used for NB, S, LB, WR and RB

    1. They've got IOL for days. McKivitz can play OG/C, Burford, Feliciano, Zakelj, Bartch and I took one in the 7th.

    2. Razor,
I don't believe that any of those IOL are great or even potentially great. I think they can get a great IOL with pick 31. I think the 9ers coaching staff and FO believe that McKivitz will improve in his 2nd year as starting RT. They were good enough this last season to win the NFC championship and to take the SB to overtime. They may see McKivitz as their long term RT and will need to replace Williams when the time comes.

  4. Just did a mock draft over at NFL Mock Draft Database. No trades.

    31. Graham Barton, OT, Duke.
    63. Mike Sainristil, CB, Michigan.
    94. Maason Smith, DT, LSU.
    124. Roger Rosengarten, OT, Washington.
    132. Dadrion Taylor-Demerson, S, Texas Tech.
    135. Luke McCaffrey, WR, Rice.
    176. Javon Solomon, DE, Troy.
    211. Dylan Laube, RB, New Hampshire
    215. AJ Barner, TE, Michigan.
    251. Cornelius Johnson, WR, Michigan.

    1. Scooter,
I like Barton but feel he will need a year of on field development and in the weight room. I really like Rosengarten this draft could settle the 9ers O line room for a long time. I also really like LMC as a WR and returner. I thought I would try out the LMC moniker.

      Delete
    2. OC, I see Barton as the center in 2025, with the ability to compete at OG this year or be the 6th OL. And agree on Rosengarten, really like him in the mid rounds.

LMC I see as a bit of an all round receiver, but best over the middle plus some RAC ability. Laube would be my return man.

      Delete
    3. Scooter,
I don't know a great deal about Laube other than he is very fast. Was he a returner in college?

      Delete
    4. Of all the picks the one I'd like to take back is Maason Smith. I'm not really that high on him. Basically Kinlaw... but not as good.

But the other DTs came off the board faster than I had hoped. Was thinking Brandon Dorlus or DeWayne Carter might be there.

      Delete
    5. That's right OC - Laube is a return specialist as well as RB/WR.

      Delete
    6. Agree with you on Maason Smith. Total Kinlaw vibes.

      Delete
    7. Fiske gives me Solomon Thomas vibes too, lol.

      Delete
    8. Oh definitely agree on Fiske. Super explosive athlete in a straight line with very short arms. No thanks.

  5. You'll probably need to take Rosengarten in the bottom of round 2. He's been moving up boards.

    1. Yeah, highly doubt he makes it to day 3. I was not expecting him to be there in my mock.

    2. What are your thoughts on Harry Hiestand's RT pupil from 2022, Blake Fisher?

      Delete
    3. He's one of a few mid round guys I like - also Foster, Jones and Goncalvez.

They all have flaws, and will need work. But if they miss out on one of the top guys that's what you get left with.

  6. My past Mocks have fallen flat over the years, so I'll go with 4 players I would like to see the 49ers draft and who may be in range for them.
1st pick: either OL, Barton, Mims, Morgan and Kingsley. I'd be fine with anyone from this group.
    2nd: DT, Ruke Orhorhoho.
    3rd: S, James Williams.
    4th: RB, Isaac Guerrendo.

    1. I suspect Ruke will be pretty high on Kocurek's wish list.

  7. CBS Sports Draft Analyst Kyle Stackpole likes OL, Jordan Morgan with the 49ers 31 pick.
"The 49er haven't drafted an OL since 2021, and that was in the 5th rd. That changes with the selection of Jordan Morgan, who can compete for the right tackle job right away and hopefully become the long-term replacement for Trent Williams on the left side." Of course, this is one man's opinion. But, this mindset agrees with my feeling that there's no need to trade up for a very good OL. Stay pat at 31.

    ReplyDelete
  8. As much as I want an OT in round 1, I have to agree with a previous assessment made by razor that the guys likely to be available at 31 probably aren't going to be ready to play year 1, and probably aren't elite talents anyway.

I think it's either trade up, or go a different direction round 1. And that different direction can still be OL...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You think they plan to pay Banks? I don't so that different direction may indeed be IOL but who knows? Not a big fan of JPJ. The best case scenario may be to hope a team has interest in trading up and being able to trade down into the 30's while picking up a 3rd round pick.

      Delete
    2. No I don't think they'll pay Banks. Or Brendel. Which makes an interior OL a need.

A small move down to get an extra day 2 pick would be fine.

      Delete
  9. I like Fuaga, but how far up do the 49ers trade to get him. If they can get between 15-20 perhaps JC Latham or Tyler Guyton could be available. Fashanu might be in that group as well.
    TBD

  12. WOW! I Go skiing and when I come back, you've traded Aiyuk and Deebo next year!
JL said a trade offer for Aiyuk would have "TO BLOW HIM AWAY."
If I'm GM I'm asking more for Aiyuk! .Pick #20 and trade 2nd Rd picks. SF gets #51 and Pitt gets #63

  15. There are reports that the 49ers and Aiyuk are not close in negotiations. Sounds like the FO will not budge above $25M. Can the 49ers go franchise tag on Aiyuk if they wanted to? Or will negotiations continue thru TC? If trading BA only garners a pick 20, I would Tag him.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. AES
IMHO, if Aiyuk is demnding $29 - $30 Mil P/Y, then he'll get paid, but not by the 9ers.

      Delete
  16. AES,
The 49ers don't have to do anything they have BA under contract for the 24 season. They could franchise him in 25. The franchise tag for WRs is currently about 21 mill. So the 9ers have all of the bargaining leverage. I'm not sure they want to play hardball so soon after releasing Armstead, thats how a team gets a reputation as not a great place for FAs.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thanks Coach. Don't know why I was thinking Aiyuk was up this year. So, does BA sit out until the 49ers meet his demand or do the 49ers seriously field calls for a trade?

      Delete
    2. AES, the 49ers are in win now mode, and it doesn't benefit them to lose BA or have BA sitting out. BA has also indicated he wants to get a deal done with the 49ers.

I feel confident the 49ers will come to an agreement with BA, even if it is above what they want it to be.

    3. Scooter,
I certainly hope so. Aiyuk is an integral part of the offense and definitely helps keep the the 49ers SB hope's alive.

  17. The above post is mine. Anyone watching the XFL/USFL game today? There was a pretty incredible story at the end. One team was trailing by 2 point with 6 seconds to go, they went for a 64 yard FG. Their kicker had played QB in college and had not kicked a FG since high school. He proceeded to kick a 64 yard FG to win the game.

    1. AES,
I don't see the 9ers drafting Rice after he said that he didn't think he was a good fit . I wonder if he doesn't want to play in his Dads shadow?

      Delete
    2. Yeah, I thought that was an interesting comment by Brenden, OC. If that's how he feels I don't want him (tbh, I don't think he is that good a prospect anyway). And yeah, I suspect the shadow of his dad is part of it. I agree with him as well - the expectations would be huge from the fan base.

As far as the PFN mock goes though, they could do a lot worse than end up with a draft along those lines.

  22. I agree with you guys regarding B.Rice. He and the 49ers are not a good fit on many levels.

  23. Lance Zierlein has the Niners drafting Darius Robinson, DE, Missouri at 31 in his latest mock draft 3.0.

  24. Kyle Shanahan on Oline.

“The more O-line play together, the better they get,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said at the NFL Annual Meeting. “It’s the one position where five guys really have to work a lot through practice in the offseason, training camp and throughout the year.”

“You watch an O-line in the last half of the year and compare it to the first, they usually get better, if they stay healthy. We’ve been able to do that for the most part. Excited to get our group back. We’ll always keep looking to add and improve through the draft, to get more competition in there. But I’ve been real happy with our group.”

Purdy was sacked more than he should have last season. The Oline needs to improve in that category. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Lynch and Shanahan go Oline with 31.

    1. Pressures given up are on the OL but sacks are typically on the quarterback.

      Delete
  25. Purdy had to escape the pocket on more than a few occasions to avoid a sack. So I'll call it a wash. Had it been Jimmy G, the sack count could have been closer to 40+.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Purdy's elite reactionary quickness (1.55 10 yard split) mitigates a lot of the pressures given up by the OLine.
