Hay Is In The Barn

The San Francisco 49ers remodeled their defensive front through free agency by trading a 7th round pick, number 251 for DT Maliek Collins, and signed the following players: DT Jordan Elliott/DE Leonard Floyd/LB DeVondre Campbell/DE Yetur Gross-Matos. With that in mind, here is my final mock draft to help extend their Super Bowl window. I did not execute any trades and attempted to keep it realistic as far as who could be available and system fit. Not necessarily how I would approach this draft but more along the lines of how I think Shanahan/Lynch might.

  1. Looks like a good draft but I hope they go O line earlier than 176/211 (although I do like Greenfield) they haven't done a good job developing late O line picks lately.

  2. Am I the only one that thinks Robinson is a bit overrated? A lot of his big plays seem to come from busted protection. I mean, not a bad prospect, but I didn't come away thinking first round... 🤔

    1. Darius Robinson's pass rush win rates from different alignments:
      3/4i - 13.0%
      5/6 - 18.8%
      Wider than that - 19.1%

    2. I don't know. What I saw didn't stack up with that. Seemed to be a lot of busted protections.

    3. He's not gonna be a big sacks guy but he seems like just the kind of football player that they'd consider at 31. Big time run defender that's versatile and can get after the quarterback. Don't think Gross-Matos will preclude taking him. Robinson reminds me of Aldon Smith with less juice. Long arms, power and bull rushing off the edge. In rush situations he can reduce inside with Floyd off the edge. I'd be shocked if they didn't have him on their board in this range.

    4. I think Dorlus on day 2 makes more sense for the 49ers.

    5. Both players are the prototype player to replace Armstead. I remember you hated that pick.

    6. Yeah, wasn't a fan of the Armstead pick at the time. My concern about him losing sight of the QB/ RB by ducking down and driving proved accurate, but in the end it was still disruptive. Once he moved to DT he proved his worth.

But Baalke isn't drafting for the 49ers any more. The type of DL they go for are guys that are quick penetrating players. They do love their hybrids, but even those guys they prefer to have some juice.

    7. Baalke isn't drafting anymore but they traded for and signed similar players, Omenihu and Gross-Matos.

    8. Omenihu and Robinson feel like very similar players, I agree. But that's not worth a 1st round pick imo. Heck, the 49ers didn't think that was worth $8M a season.

Gross-Matos is a bit of a different type of player. Better athlete, more explosive. I think he could end up being a bit of a steal for the 49ers.

Dorlus I see as more of a DT that can play DE on run downs. Got a thick lower half - he just looks more like a DT. Will likely be asked to bulk up a bit by whoever drafts him.

    9. Where do you value Robinson, 3rd round? Thats where Dorius will probably go.

    10. I think Robinson is a round 2/3 guy, and Dorlus a round 3/4 guy.

I also think they are quite different players, despite both being tweeners. Dorlus reminds me some of Ronald Blair.

  3. I think this team has too many boy scouts and not enough nasty. They lost a tone setter in Greenlaw, and before him Jimmie Ward. I think they need to take a page out of Andy Reid's playbook and draft a couple bad boys that can play and add one to each side.

    1. Razor,
I'm not sure what you mean when you say "bad boys". I don't want a return of the Harbaugh days where there was about an arrest every week. I never considered Greenlaw or Ward "Bad Boys" physical players yes but not "bad boys"

    2. Guys that will get in other guys faces and hold them accountable. Too many nice guys on this roster. Give me a Hacksaw Reynolds, Rominowski. Soul snatchers!

    3. Hacksaw yes Romo no he was a roided out freak. To me spitting in someones face or sucker punching your own teamate and putting him in the hospital crosses the line. imho

    4. I think you know what I mean OldCoach. Warner isn't that player. When asked about Chase Young's effort, his response was who am I to question another player, blah blah. No, we need some defensive alphas to hold players accountable!

  4. Not bad, but imo, Sainristil and Bullard are a bit redundant given our rookies Luter and Brown from last year and of course hoping that Hufanga makes a full recovery. I would draft one of those guys, but use one of the picks for OL. Also, the 49ers could build their defense for the future by drafting DT Ruke Orhorhoro if he drops to 63.

    1. Safety is probably the worst position group as far as depth on the team, right there with TE. There is no current NB on the roster unless we're annointing Luter. I'm not sold on any of our current CB's after Ward and Lenoir and I think their contracts are ending next year or shortly thereafter.

    2. If either Bullard or Sainristil (or both) can be day one starters then I'm ok with that. But if they can't get ahead of Brown and Luter in TC then their pick becomes redundant. I liked Sainristil play Michigan, but an OLman that can be a foundational player for the next 8-10+ yrs would suit me just fine.

    3. Why would they have to get ahead of Brown? Hufanga won't be in football shape until mid-season and Sainristil would compete at NB. Good luck finding a 10 year foundational offensive lineman between 31 and beyond!

  5. If the 49ers decide to draft one of these players cool. Using their two highest draft picks for both DBs when they already have young players from last year's draft does not make sense, imo because they could use one of those picks to draft a strong foundational Olineman.
At this point almost every media sport's analyst and fans have their own opinion on who the 49ers should draft. Who the 49ers draft next month will put every potential mock to rest.
