Super Bowl Week

Hello everyone. The 49ers have arrived in Las Vegas and it's time to soak it all up. Feel free to comment on how you're feeling and/or concerns and whatnot. Let's make it a good week of practice and get ready to shock the world!

Issue with the practice field:

Sources tell @CBSSports the 49ers Super Bowl practice field measured a bit soft for their liking last week. The field passes all safety tests, but SF’s preference is for it to be firmer. They have a walkthrough on it today and will determine next steps cbssports.com/nfl/news/super

  1. WHAT WILL, IMO, DETERMINE WHO WINS THE SB?
    * The 9ers ranked 1st in offensive DVOA, 3rd in points scored and 2nd in yardage. Their raw regular-season defensive numbers were similarly strong: 4th in defensive DVOA, 3rd in points allowed and 8th in yards allowed.
But the 9ers know in the playoffs the front 7, which they depend on, has struggled! Getting opponents off the field has been a challenge.
    * During regular season, the 9er D ranked bottom-10 (24th) allowing 3rd-down conversions on 40.93% of attempts. In each of the post season games, that mark was worse! GB converted on 53.9% of 13 3rd-down attempts while the Lions converted on 50% of their 12.
    * Arik Armstead has received a 5-year, $85 million extension.
The 9ers signed Nick Bosa, their 2nd overall pick of the 2019 draft, to
    a 5-year, $170 million extension.
    * F/A DT Javon Hargrave was signed to a base salary of $8,885,000, a signing bonus of $6,000,000 and a workout bonus of $100,000.
    * DE Chase young was acquired from Washington for a 3rd Rd draft
pick and the 9ers are only required to pay him $561,000. The 9ers will likely let him walk next season and take a 3rd round comp pick, rather than pay him the ~$18cMil Market Value he'll likely receive.

    * The 9ers will count on these 4 D-linemen, plus all pro LB Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw, to contain KC's QB Mahomes and TE Travis Kelce.
If they're successful, the 9ers will bring home their 6th Lombardi
trophy. If they play like they did against GB and the Lions, I'd expect
there will be some changes made!

    1. Something tells me this 49ers defense will come out and play with chips on their shoulders.

    2. Geep,
I don't think the 9ers will be getting that 3rd round pick back. I believe it is more likely that they will receive a 5th or 6th round pick. I do not see Young receiving a big contract after his level of play this year especially his play versus the run. I see him getting a one year prove yourself contract and it won't be with the 49ers.

    3. Geep,
Responding to your earlier post regarding which 9ers FAs they should resign. I believe that Clelin Ferrell was a big contributer to the 9ers great early/midseason D. He is great at setting the edge. I strongly believe they should resign him, release Young/Gregory and either sign or draft a pass rusher.

You're probably right about not getting a 3rd Rd comp for Young. I was thinking about how he's not worth a projected Market Value of (~$ 18Mil) rather than a 3rd Rd comp.
RE Clelin Ferrell: If the 9ers want to resign him, they'll likely have to increase his pay from ~$ 2.5 Mil to ~3.5 Mil. Other NFL teams will be looking to sign any 9er F/A that played well this last season. Many 9er players that are back up with the 9ers, would be starting on some other NFL teams

  2. I agree, Coach. C. Young did nothing to establish himself as a key player on the 49ers. At this point he would have been playing behind Clelin Ferrell, if not for Ferrell's injury. Even playing with his college buddy Nick Bosa couldn't light a fire under him. I hope the 49ers let him walk after this season.

  3. Word on the street is the 49ers will resign Young.

One of the Chiefs best run defenders, Derrick Nnadi DT is out and probably not talked enough about due to their loss of Omenihu.

  4. The Niners defense needs to rise up to the challenge of containing Mahomes, hold Kelce to handful of catches, and hold Pacheco to less than fifty yards. Defense wins championships, I expect this D to do its job.

  5. UC,
I hope you're right about the 49ers defense. Shanahan has been part of two teams in the defense completely collapsed in the SB. The Falcons (as OC), and the 49ers as HC. They say that the third time is a charm. I'm no prophet or have a crystal ball, I just happen to believe that this is the 49ers time. I've said it since their bye week.

    1. AES - Its a big task no doubt, but I think the Niners will invoke their 'will' upon the Chiefs.

  6. How much of a detriment will practicing on inferior fields at UNLV be for the 9ers. KC will practice at the Raiders facility. The Raiders Facility is known as first class. UNLV has a turf field which they covered in grass. It is dangerously soft. They can't move the 9ers to the Raiders practice fields because it would throw off the entire SB week schedule. This could cost us the SB. Sounds like a huge law suit against the NFL. Can a franchise sue its governing body. It is kind of like suing yourself.

  7. Razor,
I wouldn't go that far. There
is certainly something to be said about having a team practice on a less than stellar field. But, it is what it is, and the 49ers don't have any choice at this point, and will make the best of it. Let's face it. Las Vagas isn't a football city. And the miserable raiders will prove that as time passes, lol.

  8. I want to know, who thought it would be a good idea to lay grass on top of artificial turf?
