I got an opportunity to ask Steve Young a question Monday night:
Steve, how big a factors do humility and confidence play in the success of an NFL QB, and can you define how you manage the dichotomy between the two?
I would call it vulnerability, I think there's an emotional maturity that as you play more you really need so you can be honest with yourself. When you're playing really well, and everyone tells you that you're great, then you start to believe it, hey I'm great, and then you don't do the work and you don't have the humility to say hey look, you suck, you're not doing the job, and to be at the top of the league, if you're gonna be that type of a guy, you have to have that weekly check in with yourself and so I think humility you call it, I call it vulnerability, just to be able to take in information and not tell people to shove it, and then the confidence that comes with that. I think they actually work together. If you do it right, I think there's a loop of vulnerability to truth and criticism and things that really can matter that you have to be a judge of cuz everybodies, if you read the paper you can get the criticism but the real people that you trust and even yourself watching, how do I take in something and learn to be better, and the confidence that comes out of that because you're actually getting better. I thought everyday I want to be better everyday. I wanna be the best I can ever be, and I'm never gonna give an inch. Until the day I retired I kinda felt that way, and I don't know if I pulled it off but at least it was intentional. It was aspirational, but those things aren't at odds if you think about them the right way.
Pretty much all the talking heads are in agreement with SY. The people that Purdy had to convince was die-hard 49ers fans who saw Joe Montana and Steve Young play every Sunday during their glory years. Personally, I saw Purdy check every box this season. He showed that he could rebound after the 3 straight losses. Have a sub standard game and still find a way to win. Throw a deep pass down field with accuracy. Bring the team back from behind for the win. His stats are stellar. Brock has firmly established himself as a franchise QB. There's only one more box left to check for me. I'll get my answer on Sunday.

We know they'll be missing their best run defender, Derrick Nnadi too. Second best pass rusher, Omenihu as well.

Can we stop Kansas City's run game through our leaky runD and make Mahomes and KC WRs win it?

Sumer sports put out some great stats on 12 and 22 personnel success vs chiefs (h/t Akash Anavarathan). We have to use multiple TEs, either Kittle/Juice or Kittle/Woerner to run the ball.
Learn from the mistakes that Ravens made by passing too often and keep running the ball.
My eyes are going to be on the defense. If they bring their A game the Niners win hands down. I have a hard time watching Wilks defense. It should be a lights out defense but it is only mediocre with flashes of brilliance, stagnation seems to be prevalent. They have a hard time getting off the field. I know what the stats say and I know what my eyes tell me. This game will be decided by the Niners defense one way or the other.

“I haven’t thought about the end, so I know I’m definitely in for the next couple of years,” Williams said. “I’ll revisit it after that.
That's so huge for the 49ers.
DeleteI'd still be drafting an OT early, but having Williams saying with confidence he sees himself playing at least the next couple of seasons means it isn't as big a priority as I thought this year.
That's good news, especially given the fact that he arguably the best OLman in the game. I've said that at some point the 49ers will need to replace him, and that day will inevitably come. I hope that the 49ers take a serious approach to this in the off season, because at the moment there is a big chasm between TW and the next OLman.

ReplyDeleteReid has really changed his offense this season, and Mahomes has bought it into it -- happy to be a game manager. I'm most intrigued by their use of 2 and 3 TEs. I can see them using it to chip on Bosa or Hargrave on third downs, while sending Kelce out to freelance...
ReplyDeleteTo win, the Niners players have to elevate their game, especially the highly-paid vets. Spags has got players like Tranquil punching above their weights. Reid may outscheme Wilks. But in the end, it's players on the field that make the difference. Niners have more talent. Can these players rise to the occasion and play the game of their lives?
The Niners have not played a real good game since the Eagles. I am talking about both sides of the ball for four quarters. It is time for the team to get mean and beat the stuffing out of the Chiefs. They have the firepower to do it, Purdy, CMC, Williams, Deebo, Aiyuk, Kittle, Jusz, Boza, Greenlaw, Warner, Armstead, Hargrave and Ward.

ReplyDelete1) 9er DE Nick Bosa VS KC QB Patrick Mahomes: If Bosa can pressure Mahomes, keep him in the pocket and limit his time to find his receivers, especially Kelce, the 9ers will win.
Bosa will also need the other 9er D-linemen, to control their gap assignments and NOT let Mahomes run lose for big plays.
2) 9er DE Chase young VS KC RB Isiah Pacheco:
Young has played poorly against the run, especially during the playoffs! He has allowed big run gains routinely in his side of the field. Pacheco and KC O-line is good enough to exploit the level of play that DE Young has provided.
3) Brandon Aiyuk vs L’Jarius Sneed:
The 9ers have explosive playmakers in the middle of the field. IMO,
Aiyuk is one of the most explosive WR in the league and L’Jarius Sneed is one of the NFL's legitimate shutdown CB's.
Getting hands on Aiyuk, with his blend of strength off the LOS and speed down the field is difficult. Sneed excels at bump and run and has the speed to stay with most WR's in the NFL. How BP attacks
Sneed will be a matchup worth watching.
4) KC TE Travis Kelce vs 9er S Ji’Ayir Brown:
Kelce is a dominant player and a great playoff performers in this NFL era of football. KC QB Mahomes will lean on him and his receiving skills, to control the outcome of the game!
9er LB Fred Warner will also be responsible in defending Kelce, but rookie S Ji’Ayir Brown will have the greater responsibility in the 9ers' passing defense. His ability to cover Kelce will determine if the 49ers’ pass rushers will get home against Mahomes. If he and Warner keep Kelce in check, the 9ers will win the game.
The 3 keys to the 9ers winning tomorrow are Steve Wilks, Steve Wilks and Steve Wilks. He has to put together a game plan that is successful in the first half not just make adjustments in the 2nd half. He has to put together a game plan that shuts down the run and forces Mahomes to throw the ball 35 or more times. With their WR group they will likely have 2 to 4 key drops. Wilks and Kocurek have to put together a game plan that will create pressure without Bosa, Bosa will be doubled all game. I expect a good game from the 9ers O, not a great game but a good game. BP must play a mistake free game. No Ints. Wilks puts together a solid to great scheme the 9ers will be making their quest for 7 in 2024.
ReplyDeleteGot to stop the run. Got to keep the play in front of the safeties to force Mahomes to play underneath. LBs/ NCB have to close those spaces in between. Pass rush has to find a way to make Mahomes uncomfortable. And front 7 has to make sure they don't give Mahomes easy escape routes.
DeleteIt's a big ask and they likely won't nail it all game, but have to do it often enough and in the big moments.
And... offense has to do its part. As does STs.
Can't rely on the Chiefs giving you the game, have to go take it.

AS SCOOTER SAID, the 9ers can't rely on the Chiefs giving them the game! The 9ers "HAVE TO GO TAKE IT!"
I am beginning to agree with you concerning Wilks. Niners are going to need four quarters of play in all three phases of the team.
