A Tail Of Two Halves

The Lions came into Levi's roaring and mauled the 49ers in the first half. In the second half the 49ers defense tamed the Lions giving their offense an opportunity to put up points. The offense responded by averaging 8.6 yards per play in the third quarter after averaging just 4.7 in the first half. Brock Purdy had a QBR of 99.1 in the second half against Detroit out of 100. Purdy added +10.6 EPA on scrambles which led to 6 1st downs. 3 scramble runs for 52 yards (all 1sts). 3-of-4 for 41 yards, 3 1sts on scramble passes.

The Niners totaled 1️⃣9️⃣ Defensive Pressures against Goff:

Nick Bosa 8️⃣ Arik Armstead 4️⃣ Javon Hargrave 3️⃣ Javon Kinlaw 2️⃣ Dre Greenlaw 1️⃣ Chase Young 1️⃣

Jared Goff last night: Kept Clean: 22-28, 247 yards, 1 TD, 115.3 passer rating Under Pressure: 3-13, 26 yards, 39.6 passer rating

Wilks did a good job of disquising coverages by making it look one way and shifting at the snap to confuse the Lions. Goff is the same quarterback he was coming out of Sony Dykes system as it pertains to struggling under pressure.

In NFL history, 114 teams have trailed by 17+ points at halftime of a playoff game. Only one of those teams was no longer trailing entering the fourth quarter: The San Francisco 49ers Sunday night.

  1. The Lions were 15 of 20 (75%) at converting 4th and 3 or fewer in the regular season, plus 2 of 2 in the postseason.

Michael Badgley was 9 of 20 (45%) in his career from 48+ yards. Worst among high-volume kickers in NFL history.

  2. It is better to be lucky than good but eventually luck runs out. Purdy (dropped Ints) and Wilks (dropped passes) have both been very lucky the last two weeks. BP has to play a clean game in two weeks, no ints and complete over 65% of his passes or his and the 9ers luck will run out. Wilks has to put together a game plan that works in the first and second half. KCs D won't give up a big second half comeback. The biggest question of all may be can the 9ers O line hold their own against KCs D line. I have been right the last 3 games about taking the points and the 9ers opponents and once again I say take KC and the 2.5. I wonder whether the line will move.

  3. You don't get where the 49ers are without being really good. You make your own luck just like the Catch and immaculate reception. Tom Brady and the Patriots did essentially the same thing against the Falcons.

    1. Razor,
No doubt the 49ers are a very good team but all season even back to the preseason I have had this feeling in the pit of my stomach that there not great. I believe it will take a great team to beat the Chiefs. Other than at the QB position I think the 19 Niners were better than this year. This years WRs, TEs and QB are better but 19s O and D lines were far superior. I hope Wilks goes with a 5 man line I think that could make the difference but i'm not sure what could help the 9ers O line versus the Chiefs D line. Lastly I think BP is a good QB and earlier this season was playing at a very good level but I don't believe he is in the same league as Mahomes.

Brock Purdy was better than Mahomes in 2023. Number one across almost every metric.

    4. Purdy threw for 150+ yards & completed 80% of his passes.

He also rushed for 45+ yards and averaged 10-plus yards per carry and had 0 turnovers.

No other QB has done that in a single half - regular season or postseason in 30 years.

  4. They were exceptionally good during the regular season. But the last two playoff games hace been nail-bitters. Also, these were games in which the 49ers were favored to win. If the 49ers beat the Chiefs in a squeeze game, I'm an extremely happy man. But they won't beat them with their recent play over the last two games. A close win over the Chiefs only happens if they play at their best.

I agree, Razor. But, the 49ers defense has been somewhat suspect as well, especially over the last two games. Their defense has only been adequate in the last two wins. Truth.. Purdy has bailed out the defense in the playoffs. What I've seen from the defense is C grade 1st half. And B+ 2nd half. That won't work against Mahomes.

Those two games are excellent examples of grit. As far as luck is concerned, most people have it, the difference is being in a position to gain from it when luck happens.

I hear you. I actually had/have the 49ers winning the SB since after their bye. We arguably have the most talented team in the NFL. But, the Chiefs are not only the reigning Champs, but they are head n shoulders better than GB and Detroit who we squeeked by. It's going to be a barn burner of a game. And my confidence level is now very high on Purdy as well.

      Delete
    9. Head and shoulders better than Detroit and Green Bay when they lost to both of them? Yikes.

      Delete
    10. Yes. The Chiefs are going to play in the Superbowl, not GB or Detroit. 49ers lost to Minnesota, Cleveland Philadelphia and the Rams, are they better than the 49ers? Where are they right now? There's a reason why the two best trams are playing in SB LVIII.

    11. The Chiefs weren't as dominant this season as in seasons past. They're beatable, so long as the 49ers play well.

The big advantage the Chiefs have is experience winning this game. Well, that and Mahomes, who is an advantage any time.

Of course, the Lions weren't a better team because they beat the Chiefs in the regular season. Heck, the Panthers beat the Texans this season, did that make them better than Houston?
The best teams always rise to the top in the playoffs. Which is exactly what the Chiefs and the 49ers have done.

Mahomes may well be the goat among QBs but I don't think he is the key to the SB. The two keys are can the 9ers O line handle the Chiefs D line and can the 9er D slow down the Chiefs rushing attack. I believe the 9ers could possible control the Chiefs running game by benching Burks or Flanagan-Fowles and adding a 5th D lineman along with giving Beal a few chances on passing downs. I'm not sure how the 9ers O line can handle the Chiefs D line. Hopefully Darnold is ready because i'm not sure whether BP will last to the end of the game.

He wants you to be bunched and stacked so he can rub you on interference routes, plus it puts you in man. I doubt we see much if any of that at all. More Palm concepts with safeties coming down to fill the alley ways and more Ryan at Nickel Corner and Lenoir outside.

    * LT Trent Williams - 90.2 overall grade, 88.9 pass blocking (no pressures allowed)
    * LG Aaron Banks - 58.8 overall grade, 59.3 pass blocking (three hurries)
    * C Jake Brendel - 73.7 overall grade, 52.0 pass blocking (one hit)
    * RG Jon Feliciano - 56.4 overall grade, 56.8 pass blocking (one hit, one hurry)
    * RT Colton McKivitz - 58.0 overall grade, 65.2 pass blocking (three hurries)

    Defensive backs
    * CB Charvarius Ward - 75.6 coverage grade - allowed 1 catch for 7 yards
    * CB Deommodore Lenoir - 57.2 coverage grade - allowed 2 catches on 3 attempts for 12 yards
    * CB Ambry Thomas - 40.5 coverage grade - allowed 2 catches on targets for 39 yards
    * S Ji’Ayir Brown - 39.7 coverage grade - allowed four catches on seven targets for 54 yards

PFF uses the following NFL standards for its grades: 90-100 is elite, 85-89 is Pro Bowl caliber, 70-84 is starter level, 60-69 means backup, and anything between 0-59 is replaceable.

    ODDS AND ENDS
    * Arik Armstead received a 30.1 run blocking grade, which was his lowest in a game since 2016.
    * The 49ers' defense committed nine missed tackles:

  14. The 4th and 3 defensive play by Wilks was brilliant down inside the red zone. He had Greenlaw make Goff believe it was man coverage by following their running back in motion and switched to zone at the snap. The Niners were able to get inside pressure on Goff after he realized what happened and forced him to rollout resulting in a incompletion. Great stuff.

  15. GEEP,
I saw the PFF grades yesterday and they definitely gave me pause. The 49ers will need to give serious attention to the trenches after the Superbowl. On D, they should not sign C. Young, just for starters. Gregory and Burks are backups at best. CB needs to be addressed. Ambry Thomas is not starter material. If the Chiefs win the SB, it may come down to Mahomes exploiting Thomas. Also, it's clear that Jackson can't be counted on to be a game changer as the Edge opposite Bosa.

On most things we see eye-to-eye. But this I don't agree with..... KC Defense is far better than what our D is putting on tape right now.

Maybe our potential is better, but the last 5 games, we are not good (at least in the 1st half).

KC has two of the best corners in Sneed and McDuffie. Very good safety tandem in Justin Reid and Mike Edwards. They have a good D-line with monstrous Chris Jones, Danna, Karlaftis and Omenihu (who just tore his ACL). Linebackers also above average with Tranquill and Bolton.

You probably think Fangio is the best DC in NFL, my opinion is Spags is better. If GB D and Lions D could trouble Purdy/KS, Spags will give them all they can handle. So we have our hands full especially with the ball-control offense of Reid/Mahomes/Kelce/Pacheco/Rice on the other side.

  21. I really thought that with the offensive firepower and the talented front seven on defense (well at least on paper), that the 49ers would be a juggernaut this year. The offense has more or less held up its end of the bargain.

Is the luster and shine fading on Kocurek? In the past he has taken "down and almost out" DL and gotten them to play really well. On paper, aren't Hargrave, Gregory, Young and Day supposed to be talented. Yet, we're not seeing the kind of performances from the other "projects" like Omenihu, Ebukam and even Hyder.

Why would DC Wilkes have to publicly proclaim twice now that corrections need to be made (once after the Cleveland game and once after the NFC Championship game)? I don't remember Ryans ever having to do that? Hasn't KS even called out Wilkes now at least twice by referring to soft coverages and I think after the Cleveland game he was even more harsh.

Finally, I'm sure I remember some DL saying at the beginning of the season that this defense was as talented or better than the 2019 defense. Not by a longshot. If the talent is there, then it seems that the coaching is at fault and that means DC Wilkes.

Front office is also not blameless. Losing DJ Jones was a huge contributor to the the downfall of the run defense.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Cubus,
I agree with you 100% on Wilks. I think that coverage by the CBs has improved. As bad as A. Thomas has been the last couple of weeks, I think what Wilks has gotten out of him is just short of miraculous. On the other hand I think he misused Hufunga terribly. Overall the tackling has been very bad. Other than Ferrell they have been horrible at setting the edge. Hargrave's play hasn't been as good as last year. The pass rush has been Avg. The linebackers have been inconsistent (I'm not sure how much that has had to do with health and the D lines inability to keep O linemen from getting to the next level) I am aware of our Ds rating but I think its been a matter of a fat jockey on a fast horse. The Ds rating is as high as it is inspite of Wilks not because of Wilks.

    1. Yes. I forgot to mention Ferrell as he seems to be the one guy they brought in for the DL that has played well. I wonder if the wide 9 has seen its time come and go. CB play does seem to be a bit better and might actually be a lot better if the DL could perform better. Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the 49ers DL the most expensive in the league. I know you like Armstead, but I think it's time to start looking for a replacement. He misses games every year and his injuries I think are starting to catch up with him.

      Delete
    2. The biggest difference in the defense this year has been the run defense. The only reason the run defense doesn't look so bad stats wise is the offense has been so good most of the year that opponents abandoned the run.

The pass defense has actually been quite good all year, despite not generating a lot of sacks.

If I was looking to "fix" the DL next season I wouldn't be thinking the coaching staff needs changes per se, but that the DL needs some guys that can hold up against the run better while still generating some pass rush. Having Armstead out or banged up all year has been an issue, and Kinlaw is still hit or miss. The other DTs are all penetrators and prone to giving up gaps in the run game.

      Delete
    3. @Scooter: Like DJ Jones. So you are OK with Wilks? Why has he twice had to issue public proclamations that the D will be corrected. Why has KS called out the defense on several occasions with veiled implications that the scheme was at least part of the problem. He even ordered Wilks to come down to the playing field during games. I don't remember anything like this when Ryans and even Saleh were DCs.

      Delete
    4. Saleh went through the some similar things. Were more about the lack of pass rush and not getting off the field on 3rd down than run D issues, but he got called out too. Shanahan as well as both Saleh and Ryans made comments after disappointing performances about needing to be better. This is not new.

I do feel like there is an additional level of tension between Shanahan and Wilks that wasn't there with Saleh and Ryans, but not sure what the cause is.

If they get rid of Wilks they need to have someone better to replace him. And we know Shanahan has a preference for the type of system that is run.

I think if the 49ers fix their run defense then there are no "issues" with Wilks as DC. Now as to whether that is just a personnel fix or a scheme fix, I can't say.

  28. INTERESTING ARTICLE: What the NFL’s final four can teach the rest of the league, by Oliver Connolly.....
    https://sports.yahoo.com/nfl-final-four-teach-rest-090044990.html
    * DON'T OVERPAY YOUR DEFENSIVE LINE! WHO OF YOU AGREE?

    * The quickest path to being a contender is generating a pass-rush with four defenders. For generations, that meant piling cash and draft resources into your defensive line, letting four defenders tee off and hoping the investment would hit.
    * That’s changing. Defenses are more creative in how they’re able to create pressure using four rushers, relying on their scheme as much as their individual players. Three of this year’s crop of conference finalists were among the stingiest teams in the league in paying their defensive line and edge defenders. And the team that paid (by far) the most, the Niners, posted the lower pressure rate of any of the final four. The Lions, Chiefs and Ravens committed 10% or fewer of their cap to down linemen and edge defenders. Detroit and KC wound up with the highest pressure rates in the league. Here’s what each of this year’s conference finalists devoted to their defensive line and edge defenders, and what their return was.

Niners – 22% of the cap (2nd); 17th in pressure rate
Lions – 10% of the cap (24th); 1st in pressure rate
Chiefs – 10% of the cap (25th); 2nd in pressure rate
Ravens – 9% of the cap (31st); 23rd in pressure rate
Even the Ravens, who finished in the lower third of the league in pressure rate, topped the NFL in sacks. In 2023, finding a defensive coordinator who can build a cohesive unit, toggle coverages effectively and craft a quality blitz and pressure package is more valuable than paying a handful of star pass-rushers.

    3. OC
Players at the Sr Bowl that stood out.
      * WR Brenden Rice: One of the more impressive WR. I'll want to see how he does at the Combine, but he looked good.
      * Braden Fiske, DT, Fl. St. Made play after play every day.
He doesn't have ideal arm length (31") but showed excellent
first-step quickness and uses his hands to his advantage. He was disruptive all week.
      * Taliese Fuaga, OT, Oregon State: Love this kid, but he'll be long gone B-4 niners pick.
      * Tyler Guyton, OT, Oklahoma: Not much experience with 1 season as a full-time starter, but he's a prospect that stood out at practice. He lost a couple reps, but his combination of athleticism, size (6-7, 328 pounds) and upside is rare. He
looked like a prospect with a 1-2 years of pro coaching could be an NFL OT starter.
      * Theo Johnson, TE, Penn St. If the 9ers want a TE that would complement Kittle, Johnson would fit that roll.
IMO, he was the best player at the TE position. He has the size (6-6, 257) and showed more in person than on tape. He impressed with how well he moved on the field.
      * Quinyon Mitchell, CB, Toledo: He was the best DB at the
Sr Bowl. The only rep he lost was a 5-yard completion on a one-handed catch by Michigan WR Roman Wilson. Mitchell shoed his speed, awareness, ball skills and competitiveness
      * Darius Robinson, DL, Missouri: He dominated in 1-on-1. and was consistent all 3 days of practice. He showed he can play up and down the line of scrimmage.
      * Payton Wilson, LB, N.C. State: He is a huge off-ball LB at 6-4 X 234, but showed he has the ability to run and cover.
Wilson has questions about his durability after suffering multiple injuries during college but there is much to like
      about his game.

  30. Report: Saints working to hire 49ers' Kubiak for OC position

    * QUESTION: Would N.O. hiring the 9ers passing game specialist (Kubiak), qualify the 9ers for a compensation pick? If so, what round?

    1. Geep,
Kubiak is not a minority hire.

    2. Being the 49ers passing game coordinator/ specialist sure seems to be a good stepping stone. Wonder who the next 49ers passing game coordinator/ specialist will be... maybe a promotion for Griese?

    3. Actually, will probably be Brian Fleury - he's been on the fast track up the ranks with the 49ers.

    * Tulane CB Jarius Monroe: He was the Defensive MVP of the game
and had the only interception of the game.
    * Oregon State WR Anthony Gould: Scored the East’s only TD of the game with an 80-yard punt return touchdown.
    * Maryland QB Taulia Tagovailoa: He had the most passing yards of any of the QB's, completing 9-of-14 passes for 142 yards, including a 52-yard pass to Jadon Janke. He also had a 2-yard TD run.
