MVPurdy

The 49ers cleaned house in Philly. For over a year the 49ers had to endure what could've been had they not lost their qb in the NFC Championship game. All the talk back and forth was a sideshow to the most anticipated rematch all year. Brocky 2 started off rocky in the first quarter but after that the 49ers exorcised their demons with a TD drive to end the half, and a TD drive to start the half, followed by TD after TD after TD. The gameplan defensively was as I expected. Keep Hurts in the pocket and force him to play quarterback. He had time to fry up some eggs and bacon but couldn't cook the 49ers secondary. The defensive line generated 46 pressures all while maintaing gap integrity. The only blemish on the day was when Siriani's mall cop put his hands on Dre Greenlaw and Greenlaw gave him the, "you dealt it now smell it" finger to the nose. Why Siriani needs him standing next to him when he's got 60 guys in full battle gear is a mystery. I'm fully on board the Brock Purdy MVP candidacy and before the naysayers reach for their favorite excuse, I'll leave you with this:

48.5% of Purdy's passing yards this season have came after the catch. the average YAC for the past 10 MVP QBs was 48%. Pat Mahomes was at 54% last year.

Purdy, the 49ers and those six consecutive touchdown drives. Per TruMedia: San Francisco joined the Exclusive Club of team/quarterback combinations to achieve such a milestone. Other Members: the 2019 Ravens with MVP Lamar Jackson; the 2007 and 2009 Patriots with Brady; and the 2001 Colts with Peyton Manning.

    2. Yet some people in the national media still cling to the idea he is a dink and dunk QB. Unreal.

      Delete
    3. And most national media also say that Purdy couldn't win with key players out of the lineup. At this point, both arguments are true.
I love what Purdy is doing and that he is putting up MVP numbers. I want him to achieve that award. But a SB award will seal his legacy in 49ers folklore. Jed York, said it best - "the 49ers put up Superbowl banners."

    4. AEC, it's not like Purdy hasn't played without missing some guys outside those 3 losses. Heck, Deebo missed a bunch of games at the back end of last year.

Teams lose games occasionally. Players play poorly occasionally. And yeah, it's harder to win when your missing some star players.

Mahomes is still the best QB in the NFL, despite the Chiefs having some struggles recently.

    5. Scooter,
When Purdy wins a SB, the 3 losses will be forgotten. Mahomes has lost games, but he is an established and highly respected QB because of his ability to put 2 trophies on the mantel.
This doesn't mean that I don't like Brock, because, I'm really enjoying what he brings to the table. But in my opinion, SB win(s) is the highest award. People will forget Jimmy G, in a few years even if he was the last 49ers SB QB. Had he beat KC on that big stage, Garoppolo would have achieved the legacy and respect of bringing home the trophy after nearly a 30 year pause.
For me, personal accomplishments are great for the individual player who earn them. But a Superbowl win involves every member of team and the fans.

    6. Shanny was severely handicapped with Jimmy G. The fact that he was able to get to a SB with him is incredible.

  4. Kyle Posey has a nice article over on NN on why Purdy should be MVP, which I believe Razor quoted in his article. Had those two passes which Deebo took for TDs been long throws, there wouldn't even be any doubt. But the doubters will say that it was Samuel who is responsible for those two TDs and they are right about that - but wrong about Purdy. Purdy for MVP and CMC for offensive player of the year.

    1. Yeah, CMC is being overlooked in the MVP stakes for some reason. He's been phenomenal and is one of the key reasons the 49ers offense has been so dominant most weeks.

  9. Got a question for you guys, regarding the plan for the defense in the Eagles game.

So, I think I understood what Bosa said regarding why they played the way they did. But the result was that Hurts had all day to throw. Let's be real, the secondary hasn't been the strength of this defense. I was surprised that Hurts didn't carve us up more.

It was a different strategy than I expected. Rather than rely on the strength of the defense, Wilks instead put the onus on the secondary. It worked, but that was the biggest game of the season and for Wilks to make a major change in strategy from what worked well the last couple of games, was pretty daring and bold, I think.

Is this a smart way to play the Ravens?

    1. Cubus, they played Hurts exactly the way I thought they would. Force him to play qb from the pocket. Hurts is a running qb with a good deep ball. A coordinated and disciplined pass rush while maintaining gap integrity is the way to play Jackson too.

  10. I agree. The Dline game plan was about containment vs attacking Hurts. When the sacks were there for the taking they got them. Great strategy by Wilks.

  11. There were many 9er players that stood out against the Eagles and deserved the recognition. But one player that hasn't been recognized and been called the weak link (including by myself), that more than held his own against the Eagles edge rusher Haason Reddick. that player was RT Colton McKivitz!
If the old saying, "you're only as good as your weak link" is true, then
the 9ers just got a lot better.

  12. Brock Purdy on 20+ yard throws since week 8:

    14/20
    451 yards
    5 TDs / 0 INTs
    99.9 PFF passing grade 🤯

    ReplyDelete
  13. How PFF graded Purdy, 49ers in Sunday's win vs. Eagles:
    https://sports.yahoo.com/shanahan-pinpoints-why-49ers-good-042928544.html

    * Brock Purdy struggled in his first two drives but settled down and played a solid game, receiving an 80.9 overall offensive grade and completing 19 of his 27 attempts for 314 yards and 4 TD's.
Purdy was blitzed on 32.3 percent of his dropbacks and, as usual, thrived while under pressure. He completed all 10 of his attempts for 213 yards, three touchdowns and a perfect 158.3 passer rating.

    * What stands out to me.....
    Offensive line:
LT Trent Williams - 76.5 overall, 68.2 pass blocking (two hurries)
LG Aaron Banks - 69.6 overall, 49.9 pass blocking (two hurries)
C Jake Brendel - 69.9 overall, 62.3 pass slicing (one hit, one hurry)
RG Spencer Burford - 56.1 overall, 52.6 pass blocking (one sack, one hurry)
RT Colton McKivitz - 60.5 overall, 60.2 pass blocking (one sack, two hurries). His pass blocking was against Eagles LDE Reddick
Both OG's, Burford and Banks, pass blocking needs to improve.

    * Defensive line:
Kalia Davis - one sack, one hurry
Javon Hargrave - one hit three hurries
    Clelin Ferrell - four hurries
Randy Gregory - two hits, three hurries
Javon Kinlaw - two sacks, three hurries
    Arik Armstead - six hurries
Chase Young - one hit, six hurries
    Nick Bosa - eight hurries
    * The defense racked up 46 total pressures on Eagles QB Jalen Hurts, 41 of which came from the defensive line.
Good to see Kalia Davis get to play and get a sack.
Kinlaw's two sacks was a pleasant surprise. Like to see more.

    * Jalen Hurts was under pressure on 32 of his 52 drop backs, or 61.5 percent. This was predominantly because of the plan to contain the quarterback while allowing him to hold the ball.
Hurts average time to throw/sack/scramble on Sunday was 3.85 seconds, while Purdy saw an average of only 2.58 seconds.

I wonder if the person/persons scouting the mid round RBs is the same person/persons who is scouting the great RB UDFAs we have signed over the last 5 to 7 years? If so I wonder what they are looking for in drafted RBs versus late round and UDFA RBs?

      Delete
    6. Yeah OC, that's what is so odd about it. They can find good value at RB late round or after the draft. But whatever they're attempting to find mid-round isn't working.

If I had to guess I would say with the mid-round picks they are trying to find guys that can be, effectively, the workhorse back in this system - do it all. But it's actually pretty difficult to find a player with all the skills, vision and athleticism needed to be an every down back in Kyle's offense. And waiting to mid-round is probably too late to get them.

With later round guys I'd say they're just looking for guys that can fit a niche role and take starter snaps if needed. And it can be easier to find guys like that, with one or two really good/ elite traits that you can highlight when you need to use them.

  26. WEEK 14 9ERS VS SEATTLE AT LEVI STADUM
The 9ers enter the game coming off a blowout win over the Eagles while the Seahags enter the game in desperation mode.

    * Seahawks Defense vs 49ers Offense:
Purdy is playing at a high level and leads the MVP odds. The engine of the 9er offense is CMC, who is also playing at an MVP level.
If Seattle loads the tackle box to shut down McCaffrey, Purdy will burn them down the field. WR Aiyuk is having a career year, in part due to Purdy’s aggressiveness and accuracy throwing the ball down the field. Aiyuk is on pace to have 77 receptions and 1,432 yards. That's 18.5 yards per catch and he’s the guy Purdy will look to on key third downs.
WR Deebo Samuel isn't having his greatest season, but last week we saw his 3 TD's transformed the game, as the Eagles D was incapable of stopping him! Then there's TE Kittle, who's having a career year and on pace to have his first 1,000-yard year since 2019. This is another product of BP at QB, who looks to Kittle more than JG did.
The 9ers 3Rd WR, Jennings can catche teams sleeping and sneak underneath the attention that Samuel, Aiyuk, Kittle, and McCaffrey garner.

    * So how does Seattle match up?
Seattle has a good cornerback duo in 2nd year Tariq Woolen and rookie Devon Witherspoon, but neither of them could tackle the 9ers’ YAC weapons on Thanksgiving night.
The key to victory for Seattle will be to get to BP and pressure him WITHOUT blitzing. Purdy is one of the game’s best quarterbacks when blitzed because he knows where the open man is at all times. Philadelphia learned this the hard way after Purdy went 10-10 for 213 yards and 3 TD's against them when blitzed.
HOWEVER, the 9ers have the 28th-ranked pass-blocking O-Line, so it may be possible for Seattle D to get to Purdy without sending more than 5 rushers and hope their defense can coax a rare mistake out of
    Purdy. (good luck with that).
While Seattle D does have a good cornerback duo, their coverage at linebacker and safety doesn’t exist. If they give Purdy enough time, Kittle and CMC will burn them in the intermediate and short passing game. So Seatle’s ONLY path to stopping the 9ers is try to pressure PB without blitzing. And I said before, good luck with that!
For the 9ers? Run the ball and pass deeper occasionally to keep the Seahag's defense honest.

    ReplyDelete
  27. * Seattle offense VS 9ers defense:
The 9ers defense just got done shutting down the Eagles, one of the better offenses in the league......BUT.....
Geno Smith is coming off his best game of his season. if he carries that over in this game, Seattle has a chance at upsetting the 9ers at home. Another big factor is the return of Seattle RB Kenneth Walker III, who was absent from the Thanksgiving match-up. If he's healthy, Walker will provide another dimension to the Seahawks’ offense. Walker is a dynamic running back and it will force the 9ers D to play both the run and pass.
The key match-up in the game will be the battle between Seattle WR D.K. Metcalf and 9ers CB Charvarius Ward. Ward held Metcalf to just three catches and 32 yards on nine targets with two pass break-ups. IWard actually leads the entire NFL in pass breakups and is a huge match-up that will determin who wins the game. Metcalf comes off a game where he completely torched Daron Bland, who was considered part of the Defensive Player of the Year race.
Another match-up that will be key in this game is the chess match between 9ers DC Steve Wilks and Seahawks OC Shane Waldron. Wilks just got done shutting down Hurts and the Eagles’ high-powered rush attack, while Waldron just got done lighting up one of the league’s premier defenses. The Seahawks and the Eagles don’t run similar offenses, but shutting down the Seahags run games will go a long way in taking advantage of the match-up.
Seattle was blown out by the 9ers on Thanksgiving because they were one dimensional on offense. They tried to drop back and pass, with no play-action and didn’t try to establish a run game. That didn’t go too well, to the tune of 6 49ers sacks. This time around, expect Waldron’s offense to center around a heavy rush attack combined with a lot of hard play action and bootlegs. Getting Smith on the move should help alleviate some pressure off his shoulders.

So how do the 9ers stop Smith and the Seahawks’ offense?
Easy, do what they did against the Eagles. Shut down the run, collapse the pocket, and sack Smith.
For the Seahawks? open holes for RB Kenneth Walker, Run play action and get Smith on the move to either side.
    Final score: 9ers 38 VS Seattle 24
