Chasing A Championship

How will the acquisition of Chase Young (#92) help the 49ers? The defensive front is applying plenty of pressure but they aren't stopping the run and their coverage isn't sticky. Young hasn't been great against the run. If you cannot stop the run and force 3rd and 7 or longer, the pass rush isn't going to matter. The 49ers believe they have the personnel in house to improve their coverage but if it isn't Womack or Luter, I'm not sure who they're talking about. Oliver is an opposing quarterbacks gift to completions allowing 115.6 completion rate. Lenoir looks like a much better fit as the Nickel Corner. This just in:

Samuel Womack, Darrell Luter and Robert Beal returned to practice today.

  1. I have heard that pre knee injury Chase was a good run defender. He started out poorly this season but 2 out of his last 3 games he played the run well. Lets hope its the beginning of a trend.

    1. OC / anyone:
Question: If the 9ers decide to sign Chase Young to a new contract, what position will the 9ers draft in the 1st & 2nd Rd?
OT and CB or different positions?

    2. Geep,
Who the 9ers draft will have everything to do with who they sign as FAs and how Luter and Womack develop. If they don't resign Aiyuk they may draft a WR. If Luter and or Womack play well the rest of the season I don't see them drafting a CB in round 1 or 2 but possibly signing a FA NB. If Williams stays another year do they draft an OT to replace McKivitz and swing him over to LT the year after. I think if they replace McKivitz at OT they will slide him inside I think he could be a very good OG. Anyways there are just to many options at this time to even guess.

  2. I agree, Lenoir is a better fit at NB, but who step up at RCB?
After the Bears gave him permission to seek a trade I'd hoped JL could trade for CB Jaylon Johnson. But if the rumor is true, Chicago failed to file the paperwork in time?

  4. One wrinkle the Jags like to use is 13 personnel with three TEs. They have done it on 10.7% of their offensive snaps which is third highest in the league. They don’t seem to mind tipping their hand that they’re gonna run in those situations, going to it and then forcing defenses to try to stop it.

  5. With pick 32, the Niners select, Taliese Fuaga, OT, Oregon St.

I would agree with 9ers selecting Taliese Fuaga, OT, Oregon St.
But suspect he'll move up the board to mid first round. Would
you trade up for him if in fact he does?

    2. As important as the run game is in this offense, I would do it in a heartbeat.

Some have concerns over Womack, 5'-9" tall being too short to play outside.

  9. The NFL week 10 game: the 5W - 3L 49ers VS the 6W - 2L Jaguars
    * Both teams are coming off bye week
    * Williams, Samuel and Purdy should all be healthy and rested.
    * With all 3 on the field, that should be a problems for a Jaguars defense that hasn't been able to stop the pass this year. The Jags are surrendering 263.5 passing yards per game this season, which ranks 30th in the NFL.
    * The 9ers pass-rush has struggled the last 3 games, but should improve this week. With Young on the field, the 9er D should get to
QB Trevor Lawrence for 2 - 3 sacks.
    * 9ers 30 -- Jags 23

Have you heard something today that said Williams is going to play? Yesterday D. Lombardi reported that Williams wasn't practicing, he was on a side field playing catch.

    2. Lawrence is getting the ball out second fastest in the league (2.41 seconds).

Just going off of what KS said...."Head coach Kyle Shanahan expressed optimism that tackle Trent Williams would also return to practice this week." While Williams was not present on the field during Monday's session, there are still three more practices scheduled for the week.

While Lawrence may be getting the ball out in 2.41 seconds, he's had trouble scoring in the red zone. While Lawrence has moved the ball in recent weeks, the Jag's offense has stalled and left points on the field. * I look for the 9er D to put pressure on Lawrence and shut down RB Travis Etienne (<60 YDS) and the jags run game.
      * IMO, If the 9er O-Line open holes for CMC to run thru, it will take pressure off BP to complete passes to his receivers and the 9ers win. To do that, they'll have to control NT Davon Hamilton, LB's Josh Allen and Dawuane Smoot.

  13. #Jets HC Robert Saleh says sacks are a "very overrated" stat. Quinnen Williams has 0.5 sacks this season, but Saleh explains why that doesn't matter.

"Unfortunately we live in a society where sack production is the measure of how good a player is and it's not even close."

  14. Pressuring a QB into incomplete passes or interceptions is what matters and over the last 2 games the 49ers have done neither. its a combo of bad run D putting opposing teams in 2nd/3rd and short. Bad coverage and poor tackling. It all adds up to one crappy DC. imho

  15. CMC:
    - With 1 touchdown, he will pass Lenny Moore for most consecutive games (including playoffs) with a TD at 18.

    - If McCaffrey has a rush TD and receiving TD, he will tie Marshall Faulk at 15 for most such games in NFL history.
Would also be his 3rd in a row, which would tie Pete Johnson (1981) as only players to do that 3 straight games.

IMO, the 9er's defeating the Jaguars will depend on the following:
    OFFENSE:
    1) The 9er O-line's ability to successfully open lanes for CMC and the RB's to run thru. Control the clock and keep Lawrence on the bench.
    2) The O-line's ability to keep pressure off BP and give him time to complete passes to his receiver.
    3) No driving ending turn turn overs (INT's).

    DEFENSE:
    3) Put pressure on QB Lawrence, keep him in the pocket and limit
big plays to the Jags #1 receiver, WR Kirk, Christian.
    4) Make the Jags one dimensional by keeping RB Etienne out of the end zone and limit him to less than 60 yards.
NOTE: Trevor Lawrence 68.3% completion rate and his 7.1 yards per pass attempt are both career-highs, but the offense has sputtered in the red zone. The Jaguars have only scored touchdowns on 46% of their trips inside the 20-yard line and Lawrence only has 9 passing touchdowns in eight games as a result. He's only had 2 games with multiple passing touchdowns this season

  17. From the Athletic:

Linebacker Fred Warner, who receives the defensive play calls, hadn’t heard Wilks was moving to the sideline and said it was “fresh news” for him. He said communication hadn’t been an issue this season.

This is like a freakin' oxymoron. If DC or HC did not tell players yet, doesn't that mean communication is an issue?

Something is off here. Doesn't bode well.

As of this afternoon Williams is questionable and KS said "I won't discuss him anymore he is questionable" ESPN is reporting that he is a game day decision. I hope he is able to go. I'm not sure Feliciano and Moore can do the job.

  22. This game is gonna be must-watch television. I'm excited. Both teams are well rested and coming off Byes. Jaguars have a 5 game winning streak in which they have never trailed and we are on a 3 game skid.

Two young and upcoming QBs, Two excellent play callers and one roster far superior than the other, but trending in the wrong direction.

This game will be a true yardstick for us. If we are who we say we are, we should eke out a tough win on the road, across 3 timezones, with an early start.

If the game is not competitive, and we commit penalties and turnovers, this is just not the year for us.

    Go Niners 31-28!
