***TRADE***

The 49ers have traded for Chase Young. Compensation yet to be revealed but I'm assuming nothing higher than a 3rd round pick. What do you think of this trade?

  1. 2024 third round, probably conditional on availability.
They doubled down on D line -- makes me wonder if they were out of the Jaylen Johnson sweepstakes.

  2. We got Chase Young for a 3rd round pick (one of our comps I think) and Chicago got Montez Sweat for a 2nd? So we gave up less than Chicago?

I down for that.... All day!

  3. If CY can stay healthy, he should provide some help. Could be a good move in that Young comes into a good situation and plays with Bosa a former Ohio St. alum. I brought up Young's name earlier this month, but changed my attention to Oline.
Ezra Cleveland would have been nice, buy he's off the table now.
As, much as I hate saying this, the 49ers can use help at several positions.

    1. Yeah the pressure/sacks is not the issue some think it is. The problem is the coverage. Nothing is really disguised so qbs no where to go with the ball and they are getting rid of it very quickly.
Ryan's muddied up the front a lot putting lbs on the line only to have them bail most of the time. This created problems for both olines and the QB. QB's needed to determine if they needed to get rid of the ball HOT... Or if someone might be bailing right into the Hot Zone. This half second of processing allowed the front 4 to get home more often. And that's just 2 thing they did.

    2. Good points. The pressure is fine, they just need to finish the sack.

Adding a CB too would be huge.

  10. With the signings Gregory and Young, will the 49ers keep Drake in their plans? Jackson has completely disappeared since game one. These recent moves to help put more pressure on QBs are certainly an indicator that the team is losing confidence in DJ.

    1. I don't think Drake Jackson gets cut. He is only in his 2nd year.

Logically thinking about this, I think they might put Aaron Banks on IR and free up a roster spot. Nick Zakelj who is perennially inactive will become active on game days.

      Or,

Cut either Kalia Davis/Anthony Brown/Clelin Ferrell(?) and free up a roster spot.

      Delete
    2. Not gonna cut Jackson. He's young and learning the position.

    5. I could see them releasing K. Davis hoping he clears waivers and stash him on the PS

      Delete
    6. Don't think they'd do that either. Davis reminded me of DJ Jones when I watched his college tape. Thought he'd be a player they'd have on their draft list.

    7. Razor,
I was stoked when they drafted him. Then they gave him a full red shirt year. I just can't understand why they don't give him a chance. If he can't perform any better than Kinlaw maybe he isn't the player I thought he was.

    8. No room for him atm. He'll get his opportunity. Just have to be patient.

  11. No doubt a great trade costing virtually nothing. But we need a run stopper esp. up the middle - like when DJ Jones was on the team. Will this trade help with that?

    3. Never heard of him. Just checked him out. Agree with your assessment.

Another area where I think Young can help is on screens. He's not gonna get fooled like Gregory. He's extremely aware and will peel off his pass rush and block the pathway to pass the ball to the TE.

  14. To those who are concerned about the 9ers run D, David Lombardi says that Young is an excellent run defender. He was struggling a little at the start of this season as he was coming off a serious surgery but he has had his best run D games in 2 out of the last 3 games. I think the big question now is are the DBs able to cover long enough for the DL to get some sacks. Maybe Womack can be back for Jacksonville.

    ReplyDelete
  15. 2 cb's released which tells me, Womack and Luter are ready to return.

  16. Silver Lining Time:

    1) Don't know how sustainable this is, but Jake Moody was perfect in the last game. Wishnowsky OTH has been exceptional. So ST is improving.
    2) Aiyuk and Kittle are more involved now in the Offense. Aiyuk had a drop which hit him in the helmet and Kittle had a couple of drops, but production was there. This is a step in the right direction.
    3) Lenoir is having a good season so far. By no means is he Elite, but he is doing an adequate job.
    4) The Chase Young Trade signals that the Front Office and Ownership are not going to accept mediocrity. This sends the right signal of Urgency to the players and coaches.
    5) And Finally.....At least we are not the Raiders. GM and Coach fired today morning. The debate ends....Kyle Shanahan >>> Josh McDaniel and we are lucky to have him.

All true...Also, getting TW and Deebo back is a big plus!
    * No doubt JL deserves an "A" for the DE Young trade, just wish he'd had success trading for Bears CB Jaylon Johnson.
    * The only question left is, Can the 9er FO fix the Wilks problem?

    ReplyDelete

    1. GEEP,
Last week Shanahan commented that the zero blitz in the Minn. game before halftime by Wilks was not the best of calls. Now, Shanahan is entertaining the ideal of having Wilks coach from the sideline. These comments seem to
suggest that unless SW can get the D back to where it belongs, he may be dismissed. Kris Koceruk would be the next man up, imho.

      Delete
    2. AES
I doubt the 9ers will fire Wilks in the middle of the season. But if they do, I agree he should be replaced with Koceruk.
      * If memory serves; After DeMeco Ryans accepted the HC job with Houston, he offered Koceruk the DC position? After talking with the Texans, the 9ers also considered promoting him to DC. Koceruk decided to pass on both the DC jobs, but decided to stay with the 9ers as D- line coach.
RE Wilks: Richard Sherman had this to say about Wilks,
"We're going back to the fundamentals," "We're going back to the things we do well. We're not running man (coverage) on first and second down like they've been doing. I'm not a big fan of it. I don't think they're sound. We're gonna mix it up, play fast, our d-line is gonna have to get hot like they've been doing."
"And for you (Wilks) to take them out of that, for you to sit there and run games and stunts and do all these other things instead of just 'ears back go get to the quarterback ' like these guys have specialized in for the last, I don't know, three/four years it's weird. It's weird and I think Kyle Shanahan has had enough. I think this is the straw that's gonna break the camel's back. There's gonna be changes next week."

  18. For the Bosa bashers: He’s second among edge rushers in PFF grading, third with 44 QB pressures, and his 15 QB hits are five more than any other defensive player in the NFL, all while being double teamed just as much if not more than any other player in the league.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Bosa' season is far from over. And I believe that he will improve. But at the moment he's not even ranked in the top 35 in the league on sacks. Even if he's being double team (which he has over his career) those are pedestrian numbers by a player that was the DPOTY. The fall-off is concerning, given the fact that he's not playing injured. Also,
after missing TC, he should have been back to form after 4-5 games by now.
Hopefully, the Young signing takes some pressure off him going forward.

    1. I couldn't disagree more with the above statement.

      Delete
  20. Razor/AES,
I don't know the exact numbers but I believe the real reason they are getting pressures but not sacks is the QBs and OC they have faced are focusing on getting rid of the ball in under 2.5 seconds. The real problem is with their DBs and DC. They can't even cover any WRs for less than 2.5 seconds. That is why as much as I like the Young acquisition i'm not sure it will take care of their defensive problems. imho

    1. Wilks has been playing man to man on 1st and 2nd downs. Not how we play. He's gotta run more zone and only rush 4 from here on out, or he's out.

      Delete
    2. Coach,
ESPN, has Bosa tied at #64 in
sacks with 3. This may be attributed to many reasons. But, although Bosa has faced getting double teamed for the last few years, his sack numbers have been very good. He even played better after coming back from his knee injury.
Now, I don't doubt that Bosa can put together a string of sacks going forward, but the current numbers aren't Bosa like numbers.

The strength of this defense has always been predicated on getting to the QB. There are many reasons from top to bottom why the 49ers have lost 3 games in a row. The lack of sacks is certainly a big part of that.
It's time to turn that around.

  21. The 49ers defensive line: 156 combined pressures this season

    1st in the NFL

  22. The 49ers defense permitted an average of about 273 passing yards through their last three games. Expanding that throughout eight games equates to 2,181 yards, which would rank as the worst in the NFL.
    Per 49ers WebZone

According to these numbers the Pressures aren't making much of a difference. I'd rather see see the QB of the turf.

  23. Pressures equal disruption and lead to int's if the coverage is there. The sacks will come when they decide to finish.

  24. Belichick: Getting pressure on the QB is more important than getting sacks

    ReplyDelete
  25. Belichick is a great head coach. But he's also 2-6 right now. Compare his theory to current teams whose Dlines are getting to the QB, will show why those teams have a better record than him.
I'm not trying to dismiss the impotence of QB pressures. I only know that after a QB has been sacked a few times, his whole demeanor changes and he begins to cover-up when throwing rather than standing confidently in the pocket.
Mike Tyson said it best, (paraphrase) "everyone has a plan, until they get hit on the mouth."

    ReplyDelete
  26. Packers Outside Linebackers coach: "“I don’t know what happened. A long time ago somebody -- probably when they started recording sacks -- fans, coaches, whoever, defined a great pass rusher, or an effective pass rusher, off of sacks. That’s one of the stupidest things I’ve ever seen. You define a great pass-rusher by consistency,” Smith said.

    ReplyDelete
  27. He goes on: A pass rusher who averages one sack a game would be an All-Pro, but Smith said a pass rusher who gets regular pressure, several times a game, does more to help his team win.

“You have to look how they are affecting the quarterback,” Smith said. “When they are in the game, are they affecting the quarterback, with the pressures? Because sacks are important, don’t get me wrong. . . . I care about pressure, affecting the quarterback, that’s the No. 1 thing. I’ll take a guy that does his job play after play after play after play, being consistent, and has zero sacks, but does his job and affects the quarterback.”

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Smith makes well thoughtout and
experienced comments. I can't debate him on that.
But, at the moment the 49ers defense looks completely disjointed. And if I remember correctly, you and I, were touting for the 49ers to select Bosa before the draft. And we wanted him because we felt that he was the best player who could to get to the QB. QBs under pressure can still pass, while QBs getting sacked can't.
I'll always be a proponent of the sack.

  28. Maybe Womack and eventually Luter can make a difference. I've read that the reason Womack hasn't broken into the lineup is he is not strong on run support and right now our run D might be worse than our pass D. They need to move Lenior inside and put Womack on the boundary. I wonder if they could move Ward inside?

    3. I am not near as worried about the O as I am the D. I think KS with the return of Deebo and Williams will get the running game back on track. My worry about the O is can BP return to his first 5 game level. If he can't I think SD is good enough to get them to the playoffs. My real concern begins and ends with Wilks. Wilks was a bad hire not because he is a bad coach but a bad fit. The 49ers are so enamored with Kocurek that they passed on one of the best D coordinators in the league because he wouldn't change his basic philosophy for a DC who was willing to fit his philosophy with the wide 9 which he had never run. Wilks D has been emotionless and confused. I'm sorry but I just don't see that changing. imho

I agree, that the 49ers definitely have the talent to go on a tear. The question is, how much patience will Shanahan show Purdy if he continues to have hiccups in the 4th qtr? Purdy needs to get back on the saddle quickly after the bye or things could start going sideways. Falling behind the hated Seahawks is not an option.
