Sad Mans Show

2 weeks of misery for fans of this team. A three game losing spree that can be attributed to several factors. Let's look at the defense who could not get off the field yesterday to save their soul. Wilks has been implementing line stunts along with playing man to man on first and second downs. That's a mistake that's proven to be a disaster. This defense was built for the defensive line to play fast, hair on fire after the quarterback. Getting back to those 49ers fundamentals defensively should be the priority, and that might mean replacing Wilks if he can't get on board. I counted 15 missed tackles. Could've been more or less, but you get the point. Opposing quarterbacks have had a 144.4 passer rating when under pressure versus the 49ers the past two weeks. Conclusion: Wilks' coverage combos are a terrible match with the 23 pressures the 49ers front was able to generate against, Burrows yesterday. Bosa leading the way with 9, who I'd add played 100 percent of the snaps for the first time in his career.

Offensively, Brock Purdy was the only reason the 49ers didn't get blown out of that game. 22/31 365 passing yards, 1 TD/2 Int, 6 carries for 57 yards (team high). The 23 year old accounted for 422 total yards with no Deebo, Willams, run game and a case of the dropsies. In the NFL it takes complimentary football to win consistently. I posted a graph highlighting quarterback efficiency for those that couldn't wait to jump on Purdy with vigor and animosity. It looks to me like they'll continue that wait. That's not to say he's been perfect, far from it. His turnover worthy play percentage ranks 4th highest among 32. Now, couch that with ranking 3rd best of 32 in Big Time Throw percentage.

Currently, the 49ers are 1 game back of the Seahawks, who just traded for the Giants', Leonard Williams. This bye is bitter but may have come at the right time. I fully expect Shanny to make key changes, and I think they still make a trade or two. I don't think it'll be a big name but maybe along the lines of an Omenihu, under the radar type only at the nickel cb spot. They'll either trade for a true nickel or a proven outside cb like, Jaylon Johnson which will allow them to move Lenoir down. The big question for me will be, is Wilks still the DC coming out of this bye?

    1. He didn't do dink against them when they played the Giants.

  2. Looks like KS finally took some accountability. I agree on your take on Purdy. He was the reason we were competing. But putting too much on his plate is a surefire way to self-destruct.

Onto Jacksonville, who are IMHO the best team that no one is talking about. Doug Pederson also is a good coach, who has outcoached KS in the past.

Should be a great game. Hoping for a turnaround.

  3. Aaron Banks has "Turf Toe" and will miss a few weeks! SMH.

    1. It sounds like Banks will miss one game. Last time Feliciano replaced Banks he played very well. If he does that again maybe they will start rotating him with Burford.

    2. Turf toe is can be a career ending injury. Gonna take at least 3-4 weeks before we see him back. I agree, Feliciano played well. I wanted to see what he could do at center but that can't happen now.

  4. As to BP turnovers overshadow all other stats. 3 TO's yesterday, 5 Ints in the last 3 games. It is not just the number of TOs but the time in the game when BP turned over the ball. I am not burying BP. I definitely think he should start Vs Jacksonville but if once again he has multiple TOs that occur at key moments I believe that KS should give Darnold a look. imho

  5. Sad state of affairs for Kirk Cousins. Plays a great game in a win against the 49ers, and now is lost for the season.

  6. KS can finally sign him on a veteran prove-it 1yr deal. Masterplan all along. 4D Chess... wink wink!

    1. Mug,
Riiight!? Kirk definitely has the arm strength that Shanahan has always coveted.

    2. Purdy's arm looked damn good on that deep throw to Kittle.

  7. Yes, he did. But he's also missed on a few long throws that likely would have been TDs with better accuracy. I would venture to say that throwing the deep ball is not his strong suit.

    1. I would venture to disagree. The whole narrative that he has a weak arm was false. He has adequate arm strength to make every throw on the field.

  8. I said that Cousins has a stronger arm, not that Brock has a weak arm. But, there have been some accuracy issues with some of his long throws. What concerns me most is his Int's. Two Ints in the 4th qtr against Minn. were bad. And his Int inside the Bengals 10 yrd line was a crushing blow.
His current 12 TD to 5 Int ratio is note worthy and has to improve. The QB is always the center of attention on every team. But, aside from Brock, the team as a whole needs to step up their game.

    1. No qb is perfect. Purdy is the very least of this teams worries.

    2. I absolutely agree, that no QB is perfect. But making mistakes in the 4th qtr in close games is a recipe for disaster. Purdy's overall stats have been very good and I commend him for that. And I'm
far from passively bashing Brock, because this is not my intent.
My concern is (as stated before) that the nearly daily Int's in TC aren't a harbinger of things to come. 5 ints in a small time-frame can't be ignored of dismissed, imho.
With 9 games left, there is plenty of time the iron out this issue. That's the positive.

  9. After watching Jimmy G last night, the fact that Shanny was able to win 70% of his games with him substantiates his offensive genius reputation. The footwork difference alone between Jimmy and Brock was there for all to see last night.

    1. Yes, I concur. In processing blitzes and diagnosing the field Purdy is way ahead. Heck, Jimmy got sacked 3 times in the same drive yesterday. Davante Adams was wide open too....Purdy is much more mobile and evaded a couple of sure sacks against Bengals.

And the intangibles.....You know what Jimmy said in the post match press conference? He started with...."It is what it is"...gimme a freakin' break! :)

Purdy is not without flaws, but with his cap hit, I would take him any day over Jimmy. Right now he is a mid-level starter and at worst a high level backup, with a lot of upside.

Purdy needs to take the check-down more often and use his legs occasionally (as he did last game) and he will be fine. This will stretch the field and make it easier on O.

We have to start using Mason/TDP in the Offense. Mitchell has not done much....meritocracy...next man up.

  10. 2 Hours until the trade deadline. I am beginning to worry. If JL and KS think the roster as it is right now can win a SB I think they are delusional.

The Washington Commanders have dealt defensive end Montez Sweat to the Chicago Bears in exchange for a 2024 second-round draft pick, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Sweat has recorded 21 solo tackles and 6.5 sacks through eight games this season. The 27-year-old is in the final year of his contract.

  13. How PFF graded Purdy, 49ers' defense in troubling loss to Bengals:
    * The O-Line play: NOT good!
LT Jaylon Moore - 61.6 overall, 61.3 pass blocking (one hit, one hurry)
LG Aaron Banks - 49.2 overall, 50.0 pass blocking (two hits)
C Jake Brendel - 48.5 overall, 42.9 pass blocking (three hurries)
RG Spencer Burford - 46.1 overall, 34.4 pass blocking (one sack, one hit, one hurry)
RT Colton McKivitz - 69.4 overall, 73.5 pass blocking (one hurry)
Tight end Charlie Woerner was also responsible for one hurry.

    * The defense can't tackle: Missed tackles:
    LB Dre Greenlaw - three
    S Talanoa Hufanga - three
    DE Nick Bosa - two
    LB Fred Warner - one
    CB Isaiah Oliver - one
    CB Charvarius Ward - one
    DE Clelin Ferrell - one
    DT Arik Armstead - one
    * The 49ers defense struggled, only forcing three punts throughout the game and part of that is a result of the 13 missed tackles in the game.
    DL Clelin Ferrell - 89.4
    DL Nick Bosa - 61.5
    LB Dre Greenlaw - 41.0
    CB Isaiah Oliver - 53.9

  16. Silver Lining Time:

    1) Don't know how sustainable this is, but Jake Moody was perfect in the last game. Wishnowsky OTH has been exceptional. So ST is improving.
    2) Aiyuk and Kittle are more involved now in the Offense. Aiyuk had a drop which hit him in the helmet and Kittle had a couple of drops, but production was there. This is a step in the right direction.
    3) Lenoir is having a good season so far. By no means is he Elite, but he is doing an adequate job.
    4) The Chase Young Trade signals that the Front Office and Ownership are not going to accept mediocrity. This sends the right signal to the players and coaches.
    5) And Finally.....At least we are not the Raiders. GM and Coach fired today morning. The debate ends....Kyle Shanahan >>> Josh McDaniel and we are lucky to have him.
