Trade Lance

With the recent report that Trey Lance is a no show for practice today, reports are surfacing that the 49ers have been shopping him all year. I think they have an offer on the table that they don't particularly like and are exploring other avenues. In the end I believe he gets traded prior to the Bosa deal, which they can use to slow down the outrage coming down the tracks from the fans. I've always looked at it like Shanny rolled the dice on Lance and crapped out, but he hit the jackpot on the $100 slot machine on the way out. There's a lot of fans out there that have hurt feelings crying foul or racism that want Shanny/Lynch sacked if they don't bring home Super Bowl 6 this year. I'm not one of them, are you?

  1. We've made it past the brick by brick phase and are entering the Brock by Brock era.

  2. I could be wrong, but my feeling is that with Lance's impending departure, the Niners' offense will lose any chance of being something more than just an extension of Kyle's play calling. At some point in the playoffs, defense can (and will) neutralize a scheme, any scheme -- and then it's in the hands (and legs) of the QB.

  3. Imo it was a blunder. But we've made early round mistakes before and survived. Think Solomon Thomas and Reuben Foster, two in the first round. But that's water under the bridge. As for "SB or bust," that's Eddie D talking when there was no salary cap. There's very strong competition. But if we do get to the game and lose it because we're outcoached, I think Shanahan should go and I'd hope Jed would be smart enough to keep Lynch if he still wanted the job.

    1. Yea, we're vying for another Super Bowl run despite the "blunder".

    2. That’s what I’m saying. Despite the blunder, here we are, a team to be reckoned with.

    3. It was definitely a blunder George. No way of denying it - they gave up a lot for a guy that they are now all but giving up on just a couple years later.

But as you say, the blunder doesn't mean they are now in a desperate spot. They've survived previous errors (albeit not with the same amount of draft capital invested). And they've found their QBOTF anyway, which is what the move was originally designed to do.

Btw, what's your take on Ronnie Bell these days?

    6. Bell has looked good so far George. Needs to clean up the drops, but everything else looks promising.

  4. I never liked the trade to begin with, but in all fairness to Lance he did not get the much needed breaks to ensure a successful career. However when you look at Purdy he stepped right in and was successful from the get go. These people who want Shanny to go are completely nuts especially 49reasons.

    1. Lance's injuries changed the paradigm, and Purdy became the new paradigm.

  5. Just a general question for whoever wants to comment:

Which qb should we have drafted at 3 instead of Lance? Fields, Jones?

  6. I didn't think then that Niners should have moved up to #3 position to grab any of those three, and I feel the same way now. Lance was inexperienced but had the greatest upside (fairly mobile but always looking to throw, good arm with prototypical height/weight, and had played from under center), Fields seemed to be a run-first QB never comfortable in the pocket beyond the first read, and Jones was a physically-limited but talented college QB who looked good with a star cast around him.

    3. I like that they had the balls to go up and act on their conviction. The bottom line, Dave and Mood is that the game is about wins and losses, not draft picks. It'll be red meat for the media, but I'm ready to move on to Pittsburg.

    4. Sometimes you win sometimes you lose. The organization has shown that it's strong enough to absorb the loss. Yup the focus needs to be on the Steelers.

    5. No one can question consistently good W-L record season-to-season unless the goals are higher. My concerns are not tactical like which picks work out and which do not. We all know it's all about putting together a solid roster, whether via picks, UDFA's or FA's.

My concerns are strategic and they go beyond piling up 10 win seasons. They relate to actually winning the Super Bowl, and then being in a position to contend for it season after season.

  7. If there had not been a trade and it was just a first round pick, then okay, win some lose some. It's the magnitude of the trade that is striking. After all, these guys are professionals. If my investment advisor loses $50K I won't be happy, if it's 250K, he's gone. Frankly, I don't see how the situation with Lance is any different. But they sure did get lucky in drafting Purdy, so it does offset the big loss on the trade. Still, it makes you wonder. And let's face it, other than Bosa (about as sure a thing as you can get) and Aiyuk (whose looking to have a big year), I can't think of any of the 1st round picks that were worth it (Thomas -no, Foster - no, Glinch - no, Kinlaw - not looking good). It's true that they make up on the 1st round picks with later round picks, but if I was in the FO, I'd want to know why they can't draft better in the early rounds.

    1. There are a hell of a lot of first round bust throughout the league year after year. If you are comparing by financial standards then having a diversified portfolio is a must. Niners have a very diversified portfolio with strong investments with Kittle, Aiyuk, McCraffry, Samuel, Warner, Hargrave, Greenlaw, Williams and soon to be Bosa stock. The strength of the portfolio isn't any one stock but the collection of all. When one falters the other stocks picks it up. There is no doubt about it, it certainly was a blunder but recovery is quick and stronger due to diversification.

    2. It doesn't matter how you acquire talent, just that you do. 49ers have acquired one of the most talented rosters in the NFL under the stewardship of Lynch and Shanahan.

So long as Purdy pans out, the move for Lance, though a mistake, won't matter.

      Delete
    3. Under and Scooter are correct. Quit focusing on individual returns and concentrate on the entire portfolio!

      Delete
    4. You guys are right in that the entire "portfolio" is what matters and the team has done fine in that regard (with a lot of luck in getting Purdy). The issue is that "professionals" really made a huge rookie mistake on the Lance trade. I sure hope that they at least learned something from it.

      Delete
    5. Of course, as you all say, the "strength of the portfolio" is what's important. But Anonymous' point -- "if I was in the FO, I'd want to know why they can't draft better in the early rounds" -- still has merit. I do wonder if there's a division of labor between making the picks. Or it could be the later-picked talent is under-researched, so finding gems depends more on your scouting system and we have a very good one. Or something else. It's likely we'll never know unless years from now Lynch writes a book and tells all.

    6. Thanks, George. It was me who made the comment - I have trouble entering my avatar name on this site. I was trying to be a bit provocative/controversial in order to stimulate some conversation. In the long run I prefer elite talent and ability for drafting rather than luck, but when you are dealing with humans, it's never an exact science. Like I said, I hope they at least learn from their mistakes and it isn't a situation where there's someone at the top who is never questioned (and seldom reflects on their own failures) either before the pick is made or some time after the pick has proven to be far less than expected (I'm specifically referring to early round picks).

I know you and I were steadfast against the trade but like razor said they had the balls to go for it. It's not over for Lance, what's wrong with being the third string QB, after all Purdy started out as third string. Lance had the misfortune to replicate JG, injuries. He still could develop into a good to very good QB. If you are on a NFL team as a backup you are one play away from starting...

As far as misfires in the first round go, they sure do misfire, but KS and JL have drafted six players that are in the top 80 players in the league to include Bosa which is a first round success. Aiyuk is another drafted in the first round that has had success. I think you have to look at the entire picture just not one segment of it.

    8. No team or individual should be above being questioned about things that don't work, especially if there is a pattern of it not working.

Imo the biggest question the 49ers FO should get asked is why they persist with looking to trade up for players they feel they can't miss out on, only to see the guys that fall in their laps end up the better players.

It's a crap shoot and they should treat it as such - not just late picks but early picks too.

    9. I have no problem with constructive critique, but Shanny's record speaks for itself, along with the roster he's assembled. This nonsense about sacking him or ultimatums of SB or else I have no intention of entertaining.

  8. Silly as it might sound, I believe in the "Football Gods".

I think the decision to announce Sam Darnold as QB2 should have been handled differently.
Fred Warner is sent out to handle the PR? Are you Freakin' Kidding me? That is not how you take accountability for your decisions. That is NOT leadership.

So bottom line, I think this decision and the way the aftermath was handled will not go down well with the locker room.

Won't be surprised if we have more of our share of "injuries" and we end up being a mediocre team this year.

  9. The good news is that the Darnold signing seems to be starting to bear fruit, either from his picking up the system, Griese’s tutelage, or both.

Guy Haberman posted a nice video about the results of his grading every throw he witnessed over the last several weeks in order to study the progress of the qbs. His work supports the thesis that in Kyle's eyes Darnold proved he had a meaningful higher floor than Lance. That is, Haberman found there's been a significant difference in negative-graded throws.

  10. On another note, Moody who I have supported his draft position is raising my eyebrow a little. The missed kicks and now an injury...hmm.
I expect this guy to be almost perfect due to his draft position.

  12. Hey guys, I just watched an interview of former Cleveland Browns' CEO, JOE BANNER, in regards to the Trey Lance situation. The interview was 8 days ago, so well before the 49ers pathetic handling of announcing the #2 QB situation. Banner: "I worked with Kyle Shanahan, he's obviously a really good coach, but .... he's a very EMOTIONAL GUY, and tends to be a very SHORTSIGHTED THINKER, and once he gets 'down' on a player, it's very hard for that player to get past that!"

I bring this up because if you guys remember, 49REASONS biggest issues with Kyle Shanahan was his inability to separate his emotions from his decision making, and his shortsighted nature, which points right back to his inability to control his emotions. In fact, 49REASONS said that Kyle Shanahan simply cannot see the forest through the tress, because of his inability to separate his emotions from his day to day decision making. In fact, 49REASONS was telling all of us that the 49ers (Jed York) needed to strip Kyle OF ALL personnel decision making because he's not wired to rationally evaluate talent.

Dang, this guy - 49REASONS is simply operating at a different level than the rest of us here, especially Razoreater and Scooter_McG!

    1. That emotional chain around Shanny's neck sure hasn't stopped him from winning football games, while putting up 4 more points per game than the Chiefs last year.

    2. What are you talking about? It's already stopped him from winning at least 2 Super Bowls, probably 3!

  13. Of course we also can't forget about the other problem 49R has with Kyle ... the fact that Kyle is a LIAR, who believes 49ers fans are complete idiots.

If you're a Niners' fan, or a reporter, "Kyle Shanahan will piss on your leg, look in the eye, and tell you it's raining, without blinking an eye!"

    1. You seem pretty hostile to a HC that took a dumpster fire and turned it into the model franchise of the league. You should appreciate you have a top 5 head coach in the league who's got a championship roster despite having traded all those picks.

  14. All I know is that John and Kyle's reputation has taken a major hit this week, and I saw this coming the moment the over-drafted Trey! Heck, I saw it coming the day the traded up with Miami, without having anything resembling a plan.

In their defense, they stumbled upon Brock Purdy, which amazingly may be the 7th round pick that ends up saving their jobs. But having said that, not only do I not have confidence in Kyle's ability to keep Brock healthy, and worse, I have ZERO confidence in Sam Darnold suddenly fixing his chronic turnover issues while "seeing ghosts"!

So listen up Inspired 49ers, I have yet another prediction: This Trey Lance charade will prove to be the beginning of the end for ShanaLynch!

    ReplyDelete
  15. The beginning of the end? Lmao! As long as Shanny keeps winning, he'll be here no matter how much you cry about it!

  16. Of the 70 qb's drafted in Rd1 this century, only 6 have won SB's.

  17. Troy Aikman respects #49ers HC Kyle Shanahan’s offensive scheme: “They play a style of football that you just don't see around the league. It's an old-school style.”

  18. Some of you may not realize how this works. Draft good and lose: fired. Draft bad and win: extend. Lombardi: "winning isn't everything, it's the only thing".

    ReplyDelete
  19. That's fine, keep blindly supporting Kyle, I could a hoot. But tell me this Razor .... where have I been wrong? Are you defending the way Kyle handled Trey Lance from the get? Do you really think Sam Darnold has a better future, and more potential than Trey Lance? Do you really feel like Kyle did right by Trey Lance, using him as a glorified fullback, and then bring in Sam Darnold on a wink and handshake? This wasn't a QB "competition" and you know it. It was a charade. 2 days ago Kyle looked reporters in the eye and said he's "not going to make a decision on the #2 QB until right before week 1", can you at least admit that much? Is that the way it played out? Come on Razor, quite blindly supporting Kyle Shanahan even when he's maki8ing terrible personnel decisions. BTW< my sources tell me there is a lot of bad emotions in the 49ers locker room right now. There are a lot of players who feel like Kyle Shanahan is a LIAR, who's words don't match his actions. That is now a FACT whether you want to admit it or not, Razor. The thing about the NFL, is that consistently coming coming up short of a Lombardi Trophy, doesn't make for a great story. You may be OK with making it to the Conference Championship almost every year, but that's not the goal! In fact, it's a LOSER'S MENTALITY!

  20. They didn't just "draft Lance in RND 1", reality check: They used THREE (3) FIRST RND picks on a kid that they gave up on after 4 FRICKEN STARTS, yet was "strung along", told that he was going to be able to compete for a job he was never going to win this year! That's lame, and bad character, and John Lynch knows it, and the players know it! Believe me, the players know Kyle screwed Trey over, because of his shortsighted nature and inability to control his emotions!
