 OL(8): Williams/Banks/Brendel/Burford/McKivitz/Feliciano/Zakelj/Moore

DL(10): Bosa/Hargrave/Armstead/Jackson/Kinlaw/Givens/Bryant/Ferrell/Charlton/Waege

  S(4): Gipson/Hufanga/Brown/Odum

  P: Wishnowsky

  K: Moody

 LS: Pepper

Trading Burks(lb) would save them around $2 million. I could see them putting Luter on Pup. I haven't heard much on Beal so maybe they plan on stashing him somehow too. Gonzalez could net them a 7th and Dallas needs a kicker. Colletto (FB) might fetch them a 7th round pick if they feel he won't make it through waivers.

  1. Rookie kicker Jake Moody had two 60-yard field-goal attempts and was successful on both of them. Veteran kicker Zane Gonzalez did not try a field goal.

    1. Money Moody might just break the NFL record one day.

  2. I believed Darnold would shine in this system. Maybe he’s hampered by the playbook or maybe I was just wrong. But he does seem better than Lance at distributing the ball, as Lance can’t always make the easy short throw, which is crucial imo.

    1. Darnold's weakness is processing. Shanny can do that for him similar to the way McVay did it for Goff.

  3. I've a hard time seeing LB depth comprising of two rookies and an one-year PS player. I also think that Burks is valuable to Schneider. I won't be shocked if Niners also keep DFF and only one of these three (MMB?) make the final 53.

    1. Log jam at LB. I think they trade Burks, but you might be right about DFF staying, although he did get cut last year. They may be able to sneak Graham through waivers, but I wouldn't count on it.

  4. Looks like Ray-Ray broke his wrist and is out 8 weeks. So he will start the season on IR. Opens the door for Ronnie Bell or Tay Martin on the 53 roster. D'Shawn Jamison will also return punts/KOs, so he is making the roster (externality).

Stashing LBs is gonna be a problem. The league knows we are an LB factory...so its gonna be hard.

Personally I think Warner/Greenlaw/Burks/MMB/Robinson and DFF traded.

    2. Geenlaw has hamstring injury, Kittle adductor injury.

    3. While RRM and Kittle's injuries appear to be the random types, Jackson and Greenlaw probably need more yoga (or similar) exercises for muscle pliability?

  5. Burks is in his last year and would save the team 2.5 million. I think he's a strong trade candidate.

    1. I agree. It probably depends on how they perceive his ST value.

  6. Brock Purdy had the highest "open throw" % in the league at 31.2%. That's defined as a throw when nearest defender is 3-5 yards away at time the ball arrives.

    - 9.4% tight window atts was 45th (1 yd or less)

    1. I think a full year of Purdy will determine if his intangible skills can overcome his arm strength. I think he will be fine but we all have seen flash in the pans before.

      Delete
    2. The arm strength narrative on Purdy is a little over the top for me. 55 mph is average arm strength at the NFL level. Sam Darnold, contrary to popular belief does not have a strong arm. It's average. DeSean Watson, 49 mph, less than average and if you recall, slid in the draft because of it. LaMarr Jackson, 49 mph and Jalen Hurts, 47.5 mph. Purdy's arm was around 54 mph prior to the injury.

    4. I didn't know they defined arm strength by speed. Speed doesn't necessarily translate into distance. I was more referring to distance.

      Delete
    5. For balls thrown at about the same angle to the ground, the release speed is a good measure of the distance traveled.

I'm not concerned about Purdy's arm strength. But I'm curious about his willingness and ability to throw outside the numbers from within the pocket.

    1. The OL is certainly not doing Trey any favors, but Trey's processing seems very slow. You think he can improve on that with more playing time? Somehow, I think we're talking about years for that to happen, if ever.

  8. Trey Lance didn't look good out there. O-line was atrocious but there were some bad decisions from Trey too.

Liked what I see so far from Ronnie Bell, Jalen Graham and Clelin Ferrell.

QB2 is a job that’s more about a high floor than a high ceiling. And right now it’s clear that Sam Darnold had a higher floor than Trey Lance, especially within the context of what Kyle Shanahan runs. Lance is going to have to show much more steadiness next week than he did today

    1. IMO, that logic applies to a franchise QB and his backup. Niners don't have a franchise QB as yet, and their starting QB's under Kyle don't seem to last very long into the season. Niners need a couple of QBs who can make plays in the post-season under tremendous duress if they are going to win the Lombardi. Not sure if Purdy and Lance can do it, but I think they have more chance than Darnold. The two seasons Darnold spent at USC, I thought that he gave Stanford a chance to win the game each time they played the Trojans. He continued to make mistakes at critical moments in his NFL career. Will 6 months under Kyle/Griese's tutelage fix all that? Consider me a Darnold skeptic until I'm proven wrong.

    1. Yup. You'd like to have seen Trey take advantage of playing against 2nd and 3rd stringers, but he's not there yet (if ever).

Besides that no one should give 2 thoughts about it, zero starters played so it was really just 5th quarter (for those who played HS football).

      Delete
    2. I still think if given time he'll get there, but also increasingly think it won't be with the 49ers.

    3. Yeah. I think if Lance ever makes it in the NFL, it will be on a similar path to Geno Smith.

    1. Good news. That was his position in college, but realistically how can a guy with his measurables — 6’2, 299 lbs — survive as a tackle? A Dan Brunskill role?

    2. He's been playing LT exclusively throughout camp.

He did a good job, but I don't agree with him on his general rating. If Lance was a rookie in his first preseason game, I would be hopeful. But it's his 3rd season. Maybe after a few more years, the processing might improve, but........

    1. It wasn't a disastrous display, but he's definitely not where you want him to be in year 3, no matter the excuses/ reasons.

    2. JT O'Sullivan Hammered him even worse.... Basically questioning his ability to read the field and trust his reads. He pointed out a repeated tendency to check the ball down when receivers were clearly open further down the field on earlier reads.
It's funny because with his arm he should be more aggressive than Brock but he isn't necessarily.

    1. The week before week 1. I'd want him to have at least one week of practice with the team.

He's the sort of guy that will keep himself in shape training on his own, so not too worried him.

    1. Hahaha, I thought he was supposed to be the best NB. Wilks might've been a bit premature in that assessment. Maybe Lenoir is better suited for that spot, and Thomas takes his outside cb position.

    2. Looking more and more like Oliver won't be the starter. And if he's not... I doubt he makes the roster.

Lenoir was getting NCB duties today. Looks like he could be pulling Carlos Rogers duties.

    1. I thought Sam looked sharp even though the Denver D was 2nd and 3rd stringers. Still, if Trey wants a chance he needs to play just at least as well against the 2nd and 3rd stringers.

    2. Yeah, Darnold looked alright. A little worrying they couldn't sustain drives with him in, and so many 3 and outs, but much of it not on him.

  21. Lance got hot that drive, but very much a mixed bag. Really missed some opportunities prior to that streak of completions for the TD.

    1. Great opportunity for the O to put Moody in position to win the game. Would be great experience for him.

    2. Great opportunity for both Lance and Moody. They did it, but man, Moody is lucky TDP got that closer for him.

      Delete
    3. But it takes Lance several possessions before he'll get hot. That's a big difference between him and Purdy. Purdy goes in and gets it done from the get go.

      Delete
    4. Definitely. Purdy deserves to be the starter.

    5. Inexperienced QBs typically take longer to get into a rhythm in a game.
Seems like Kyle is calling more pass plays from the pocket for Lance. Good experience for him.
Darnold played well but I still feel that Niners are better off developing Lance as the #2.

      Delete
    6. Right now, the best I see for Lance is a path similar to Geno Smith. It’ll be a while (partly because he probably won’t have opportunities this year to play in games), but he has the potential in several years to be quite good. But it won’t be with the 9ers.

      Delete
  22. Just finished watching the game, no doubt this is Purdy's team. I thought Darnold played very well and surprisingly Lance got hot and showed why the Niners traded for the guy. This team is going to rock and roll all during the season.

  23. I expect Lance will be tearing it up in a couple years. The 49ers probably trade him before the start of the 2024 season.

    1. Myself, I do not know what's going to happen in the QB room. The only thing I know for sure is that at this point in time its' Purdy's team. Who gets traded, one can make a case for Lance, Darnold and Allen. None of them will make it too the practice squad.

      Delete
    2. I would be shocked if they trade a qb this year, unless a team's qb goes down and they're offering up a 1st round pick. They've got 3, maybe 4 qb's they can win with in this system. How many teams can say that?

      Delete
    3. Something has to give, the Niners are not carrying 4 QB's and if they try to sneak one on to the practice squad some team will pick him up whoever it be.

      Delete
    4. Oh I fully expect Allen to be cut, but then it becomes; did he come here for the money or the coaching staff? I read somewhere, and I can't recall where, but Allen came here with the idea of furthering his coaching ambitions and was willing to be on the practice squad over money. We'll see...

    1. He was also getting some snaps against Randy Gregory, so its not just bottom of the roster guys he's gone up against.

Maybe like Derrick Deese he can be an effective LT despite being undersized.

    1. Jimmy never had the elite reactionary quickness that Purdy possesses, even going back to 2018 prior to his acl injury. Not to mention it's my contention that Purdy loves the game more than Jimmy, and has been fueled by doubt his entire life at the position. Jimmy was a LB before he switched to qb. If you think about it, Purdy was averaging 30+ points per game as a newborn in this system, approximately 10 more points per game than the veteran who had 5 years in the system.

  26. Like i said lets see how the season goes but he had a very good year last season.
