Reporting For Purdy

Brock Purdy has been fully cleared to play ball. I'm extremely surprised as this puts him about a month and a half ahead of schedule. I know he was a Cyclone but he might just have some Wolervine in him too.

  1. That's huge.

I also think that now makes TC more fair on Lance. If Brock was out there couldn't really be a competition. With Brock participating Lance has the opportunity to show he is looking and performing better, if he's good enough.

I also think this increases the odds that one of the QBs gets moved.

  2. On TK's podcast after the presser, Kyle Shanahan, "I still don't know what the right answer is" on his choice to go with Purdy over Lance.

    1. I'm just glad it can be an actual competition now, with Purdy cleared. May the best QB win.

    2. Gonna be extremely difficult to take Purdy's job in practice. I don't see it happening.

    3. It will be. But he has a better chance with Purdy able to participate. At least this way Purdy has to show he's still sharp.

  3. Safety J'yir Brown the first man out on practice field today. Bodes well for the rookie.

Excited! May the best man among Purdy and Trey win...I will support whoever emerges. Let's go!!

  4. Tim Kawakami in the Athletic:
    Brock Purdy

“That’s when I knew we had a dude,” Shanahan said. “Because of how good he had played I think the two weeks prior. But that game, I think he had broken ribs from a Sunday. That game was Thursday. I remember when he took his shot in pregame warmups he couldn’t throw because it was still hurting in that area. So he’s going into the locker room and I’m sitting in there going over the openers and I still don’t know whether he can throw or not as they’re waiting for (the shot) to kick in. So I’m about to go with Josh Johnson, who’s been here for like a week, or no, two days …

“But Brock’s like, ‘No, I think I can do it.’ And then watching him in that game, knowing how hurt he was and watching how he just managed it on ‘Thursday Night Football,’ and some of the plays he made to move the chains on third-and-1 at the end, scrambling, I knew we had a dude who was made up the right way. Who could handle the pressure and stuff. And we’d seen what he does just as a player in practice and the games. But it was more the make-up. And then just hang with him from then on out. It was proven. He got stronger with it.”

    49ers QB update
    Practice 3

    Brock Purdy
    11-on-11 reps (all w: 1st team): 21
    Passing: 6-12

    Trey Lance
    11-on-11 reps: 11
    Passing: 2-5

    Sam Darnold
    11-on-11 reps: 10
    Passing: 3-7

    Brandon Allen
    11-on-11 reps: 9
    Passing: 1-4

Looks like a 3 way battle to back up Purdy with Darnold being the leader in the clubhouse according to multiple reports. $11 mill is a lot of money to pay your number 3.

    1. Our scouting department just got even better! Also Goldson has joined the staff as well.

  8. Glad to hear that Lance hit on all the layups today. Continuing to look forward to an intense competition between him and Purdy, despite the latter having earned the inside track to the starter job.

Seems to be misconception about Brock Purdy's day today — it certainly wasn't a bad one. He had that ugly 2-throw stretch (short incompletion, then the Greenlaw INT), but Purdy also ripped off a bunch of completions. 4 straight early on, 8 straight later (and a drawn defensive PI) to sandwich the pick. He also hit the biggest 49ers' play of the day, a 70-yard TD to Christian McCaffrey

  10. Kinlaw does look slimmer, fitter and quicker. Heard they tried a snap or two with him at DE. Wonder if he can be developed into an Armstead-like role. Hope he can keep his pad level low and stay healthy. His knees have been his Achilles' heel -- so to speak...

    1. Changed his diet to keto to reduce inflamation. I think Armstead has been instrumental to Kinlaw as far as leadership and mentoring.

  11. "Moody on Tuesday finally missed a field goal – a 43-yard try according to NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco. He made his other five attempts though including one from 53 yards out, and another from 60. He’d hit every other kick he’d gotten away in camp."

I think he might be the best pick in this year's draft. Time will tell.

  12. Based on TC Reports so far, I think

    - Marcelino McCrary-Ball will take Azeez Al Shair
    - We got another good UDFA in D'Shawn Jamison. All indications are that he will be the next E-Man and will make 53 roster.
    - Purdy is QB1 and Lance is QB2 while we have a much better QB3 in Darnold for this season. Trey will get traded next year depending on how Purdy's season goes.
    - Colton McKivitz will be a slight downgrade from McGlinchy in Run game and same or even slightly better in pass game.

Slightly disappointed that Bosa contract is not yet in place. And also want to see TE2 position solidified by either Willis or Latu.

    1. From what we're hearing this is the best start to camp for the QBs as a collective I can recall under Shanahan.

Obviously great signs. Though I can't help but wonder a little what this means for the D. I don't think it is an issue though - sounds like there's been a few plays allowed to continue that would be sacks and also that a lot of the good QB play is more good decisions and ball placement/ timing than bad D.

    2. McKivitz has had a great camp thus far.

  13. They're installing a 5 man front on defense with Kinlaw added to the starters.

    1. George: How would that break down? DE-DT-NT-DT-DE? So they can run against us. What would our secondary look like?

    2. Sorry, typo. "So they can't run against us."

    3. Interesting. Jackson-Hargrave-Kinlaw-Armstead-Bosa? Would be quite threatening.

    4. I just want to remind you guys how confident I felt about Ty Davis-Price in my analysis directly proceeding last year's draft. There were a lot of questions about the 93rd overall pick of the 2022 draft, with a large contingent of draft analysts, many of whom were at the very least "qualified", who were quick to call this pick a "reach", despite the obvious talent, as well as his physical attributes. Perhaps most importantly, TDP's running style seems like a terrific fit for for the way Kyle's rushing attack has been trending. Well sure enough, Ty Davis-Price has generated a lot of buzz since the Niners donned pads on Monday, and with Elijah Mitchell dealing with yet another injury (which is expected to sideline him for the next 10 days at least), don't be surprised if TDP starts making a case to take the primary backup job behind CMC, while leapfrogging Jordan Mason in the process!

  14. I like what I am hearing about Drake Jackson, Javon Kinlaw and Taco Charlton. Sounds like Jackson and Kinlaw have both elevated noticeably relative to last camp. And it sounds like Charlton's length and athleticism is a great match for how Kocurek wants his DL to play.

Sounds like Ferrell has been pretty quiet, but I suspect he'll be more a solid than spectacular type player. A bit like Ebukam, could carve out a lot of snaps just by being reliable on any down.

    1. That was from me btw - forgot to sign in.

    2. Maybe Ferrell is your DE on running downs, with Jackson and Charlton rotating in on passing downs.

      Delete
    3. Yeah, that wouldn't surprise me at all.

Question is... where does that leave Hyder and Beal? Makes me wonder if Charlton could push Ferrell off the roster.

  15. The Niners have drafted six of their eight players in the NFL top 100. I would have to assume that would be considered excellent.

    1. So much for the narrative that Lynch/ Shanahan can't draft.

Not that there is much of that narrative around anymore anyway, but was so ridiculous.
