Trey Lance Is Headed South

Adam Schefter
Trade: 49ers are sending their former No. 3 overall pick Trey Lance to the Dallas Cowboys for a mid-round, per sources. Lance now gets a fresh start in Dallas.

  1. Kudos to the organization for not compounding the mistake, and ending the distraction. Good luck to the kid, Cowboys notwithstanding.

  2. Won't be long before the Bosa deal is announced.

  3. Doesn't seem like the best landing spot for Lance to develop. Dak's the clear starter and IIRC Cooper Rush did pretty well last year when he had to play.

  4. It was either going to be Lance or Donald, I wish him all the best. We will see him in the playoffs.

  5. Kyle Shanahan FAILED Trey Lance. I expect Trey to reach his full potential with Dallas (as much as it pains me to say because I absolutely loath the Cowboys), and make the 49ers rue the day they gave up on him after FOUR (4) starts, despite giving up a team record in draft capital, which in itself is simply absurd!

  6. Sucks to see it not work out, but better off letting him go than hold onto someone that won't be happy.

    1. The compensation tells you the league looks at Trey Lance as a backup at best

    2. No team could trade a lot for a guy that has only 4 career starts with mixed at best play and his team was willing to let him go after 2 years.

His talent level is better than that though, which is why I think it would have been a great move for any team that may have longer term question marks at QB, or a contender that needed a backup that could keep them competitive if the starter gets hurt.

    3. Apparently Bills also made an offer, which is another team that made sense.

  7. Kyle Shanahan is officially on the clock now. If the 49ers have a disappointing season and/or Brock gets banged up again and Sam Darnold is still the same old Sam Darnold he's always been, Kyle Shanahan will officially lose a large portion of the fan base, and for good reason.

That's irrespective of whether or not Trey ever even develops into the QB I think he can be. And if he does, and Dallas either knocks off the Niners this year and / or next year, or finishes ahead of the Niners, AND Trey Lance develops into a terrific #2, and eventually replaces Dak Prescott, Kyle Shanahan needs to either step down, or be publicly tarred & feathered, and completely stripped of any and all personnel decisions, which frankly should have happened years ago, IMO!

    1. And I think I've earned some credibility on this issue seeing that I predicted this outcome after Trey's first training camp!

    2. Should we start calling you Fredo?

    3. Credibility?? ha ha that is about as stupid as it comes. The little kid who signs in using other people's names thinks he has credibility...astonishing what these young people think of themselves.

    4. I know, he is easy to point out.

    5. He was posting under my name in the other chat too. Idiot!

  8. And let's give it up for Trey Lance's replacement, Brandon Allen. He looked every bit like a 4th stringer. Sure glad we shipped Trey Lance off so that we didn't lose him!

  9. Lance got bit by the injury bug, bit by Pipp and then lost playing time. Just a perfect storm of unfortunate circumstances.

    1. The unexpected rise of Purdy also doomed his time in SF.

  11. I do feel the need to give Kyle his props after last night's postgame presser. The fact that Kyle showed some humility, and admitted that he personally let Trey down, deserves a shout-out!

I wasn't all completely on the level though, because Kyle also claimed that "he still believed in Trey", as if .... that's almost like saying he also believes in Santa Clause, so ....

    1. The process, the trade, and the lack of development of Lance - are all bad, but I respect the ownership of the move, as well as the accountability they took for the failed pick. Many will disagree with this take, but I thought Shanahan and Lynch handled last night as well as you could.

    1. I'm thinking the 49ers may have planned for Bosa to sign after Tuesday to put a player on the roster, (Latu?), with the idea of IR'ing him.

    2. Yes, I was reading an article just about that. Good plan.

  13. The Latu pick, to state the obvious, hasn’t gotten off to a blazing start. Troubling.

  14. Re Sam Darnold from Kyle Posey article today:

    According to PFF:
-- He had 33 attempts this preseason.
    -- Of those, 22 were completions (66.7%).
-- Of the 11 incompletions, all were drops

    1. Over 12 percent of Purdy’s pass attempts went more than 20 yards downfield last season; in his six years as the San Francisco starter, Garoppolo averaged 8.6 percent. Similarly, Purdy is a successful quarterback late in the down, either as a scrambler or on a designed boot. When Purdy holds the football for more than 2.5 seconds (a good benchmark for a play that’s transitioning from the quick game into something more), he has positive expected points added per play of .15—over Garoppolo’s career, he has a net negative (-.03).

  15. My post was not to suggest that Darnold will take the job from Purdy. You've made the point yourself that Darnold's issue is processing. Purdy's our QBOF and Darnold probably won't be here next season. I was very pleasantly surprised, though, to see how accurate Darnold can be in Kyle's system.

    1. Also, I might add, it's hard to totally believe that the 11 were all drops.
