Q: After signing S Gipson and DT Hargrave, I don't see Lynch using a 3Rd round daft pick for either position, do either of you?

    3. I think you could cross off DT in round 3. I might cross off safety, but not cb. The 25 year old from Cal, Daniel Scott is intriguing to me. He's got slighty better measurable than Gipson had coming out. He's bigger too. 4.45 40/1.55 10 sec split/6.75 3 cone/4.17 shuttle.

    4. Razor
I Agree, Scott had some good Combine times but his scouting report says he's a project that needs work on tackling and his Run defense. What round would you take him?

    5. Last 5th round pick. I haven't looked at any of his tape yet but he's made a lot of tackles for the Bears. I heard he was pretty impressive at the Senior bowl as well.

  2. Daniel Popper's article in The Athletic on FA value added points out that Niners have two of the top 10 value FAs in the last three seasons (Gipson and Hyder). They also rank second in the league (trailing the Packers) in added value per million spent in free agency.

After the necessary overspending of the first two season out of desperation for improving the expansion franchise-level talent left behind by Baalke, the ShanaLynch regime has settled down and appear to have done very well in FA.

  5. Love the Gipson signing. Great value for a starter.

At first glance, Hargrave seems pricey....will wait and see what Maraathe has done. Love the player and especially his availability. Guy has missed like 3 games in 7 years!!

Lot of investment in the D-Line now (with upcoming bosa deal)...not sure if we will be able to sign E-Man. :(

    McGlinch to Broncos.

No reason for Donald to stick around. After trading Jalen Ramsey to the Miami Dolphins for a 2023 third-round pick, the Rams will be the NFC West bottom feeder in 2023.

  8. ShanaLynch doing ShanaLynch things to the D line. Didn't expect such a big signing -- while weakening the NFC champs at the same time. Would like to see the Hargrave contract details to understand the actual money involved. Givens re-signing is a big plus.

After only getting 3.5 sacks in 2022, I was hoping Zach Harrison, Ohio St. would be available for the 9ers in the 3Rd round. But now It looks like he'll go in the early to mid 2nd Rd. and the 9ers don't have the draft picks to trade up for him.

    2. I like this signing. We have 4 out of 5 linemen returning next year. I believe continuity plays a huge role for OL and center is such a key for this offense. So it's a win.

On other news, we lost E-man to the Lions :(

We should go after at least one CB in the second wave of FA.

As Mugeek said, prefer to be losing only one starter.

Wonder if they'll offer a vet minimum contract to Verrett (assuming his rehab has gone well)

  21. The 49ers offseason moves so far are looking very much like what I suggested. Prioritise re-signing Gipson and Brendel, let McG, J. Ward and Al-Shaair walk, restructure C. Ward, sign a good DT and vet backup QB.

Moseley I had as someone to keep tabs on and only bring back if a market didn't eventuate, but it did. I had Omenihu and Ebukam in the same boat.

Remaining FA moves I think should be restructure CMC, add an edge that can start, maybe a RT to compete, and a CB to compete. Will be interesting to see what they do with Gould.

Another #49ers restructure, this time with LB Fred Warner as they save an additional $9.5 million, per
    @FieldYates
    .

Charvarius Ward and Warner restructures create a little under $20 million in cap space for Niner

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Not a massive fan of restructuring Warner before CMC. Warner now has $7.5M of his cap hit per annum as prorated bonus. Basically means they can't get rid of him for a long time, and if he gets hurt and has to retire the team will carry a lot of dead cap. Not a fan of carrying that much prorated bonus on one contract.

      Delete
    2. I think Warner and Armstead retire 49ers. Same goes for Trent Williams, and I expect he will if they get over the hump this year.

      Delete
    3. Bosa is the other player I see retiring a 49er.

      Delete
    4. Likely true, but you never know when injuries will ruin a career.

      Delete
    5. In doing these restructuring and kicking the can further down the road, Niners are clearly betting on the increasing cap projections for future years living up to expectations. The cap projections are pretty rosy:
      https://overthecap.com/nfl-and-nflpa-look-forward-to-the-future-salary-cap

      Delete
    6. That is absolutely the case, Mood.

My dislike of restructuring Warner though is more about committing so much dead cap in future years on one player should the worst come to pass. Usually having so much dead cap on one player is due to guaranteed salary over the next 1-2 years.

It's simply a desire for more risk aversion on my part.

  25. Omenihu has signed with the Chiefs.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That's the positive way to look at it. I'm getting concerned about the loss of edge rushers. Bosa already gets double teamed or chipped constantly. Maybe the hope is that with Hargraves and Armstead, teams won't be successful if they double Bosa. Still a strong 2nd edge would be helpful.

      Delete
    2. Cubus, Hargrave definitely should help in terms of freeing up a good pass rusher. And they will still add a couple of edge guys - likely one 'name' FA edge that can be had for a bargain. Plenty still available.

      Delete
    3. Seems like they are betting on Drake Johnson. There is a long list for the rotational DE role soon to be available in the bargain bin
      https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/all/edge/all/

      Delete
  26. Why wouldn't a talented but to date underachieving DE want to come to the 49ers?

Omenihu, Ebukam and Key all got deals this offseason that can pay them $8M+ per annum. And they get to play on a DL with Bosa, Armstead and Hargrave taking the attention.

    ReplyDelete
  34. McGill and DFF re-signed.

49ers now have a lot of depth at DT, not much at edge.

Something the lads on Locked on 49ers discussed, which I am now starting to think may have legs, is the idea of shifting Armstead back to DE on early downs. Tbh, I really don't like the idea as I feel the move to pretty much full time DT has unlocked the best version of Armstead. But with the current roster construction I could see it happening.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree- prefer Armstead inside, but he and Ferrell have certain similarities, so if Jackson can't come in and command snaps, I could see some sort of rotation there. I am hoping J Willis signs and then off to the draft- only other curiosity would be what WR Clark's price is. I would like some attention paid to S as I think that is where the 49ers remain vulnerable as Gipson and Hufunga in coverage makes me nervous.... hope to see more blitzing w Hufunga next season.

      Delete
    2. Yup, Armstead needs to remain inside. I think Jackson is going to be fine.

    From Lombardi today:
Sam Darnold on his 6-game stretch to close 2022, easily the most efficient of his career: "Not forcing things that weren't there.. That was the biggest thing for me: Staying within myself, staying patient."

That's what gets me excited about Darnold. Last year he began to emerge from the gutter.

    1. I was hoping for one of Darnold/Stidham/Heineke/Minshew........ but think Darnold not only has the most upside, but I also think he could legitimately compete for the starting job. Camp will be interesting.

      Delete
    2. George:

Coaching under Griese could be the best thing that ever happened to him.

      Lance Zierlein:
"At the end of the day, Darnold has NFL size, arm strength, accuracy, pocket mobility, poise and field reading capability. His windup is an eyesore for sure, but he has the velocity to mitigate the additional release time. While Darnold has the mental toughness and talent to start tomorrow, early sideline seasoning could help him better process coverages in an attempt to eliminate future interceptions. Darnold has the tools to thrive in any system and doesn't have to have perfect protection to succeed. His floor is solid starter, but he has the ceiling to be one of the top tier quarterbacks in the game as he gains more experience."

      Delete
    3. Lets see what Darnold looks like after he gets his hands Griese.

  37. I like all the moves in FA so far. The most underrated might be the Atlanta corner. Something we haven't addressed in TE... Hoping Kroft and/or Dwelley get resigned for depth.

The biggest needs I see in this team atm are DE, RT, K and TE

Out of 11 draft picks, I can see us drafting something like the following (based on need):

    2 DEs, 2 RT, 1 K, 1 TE, 1 DT, 1 S, 1 CB, 1 WR, 1 LB
    UDFA - 1 RB, 1 QB (camp arm), 1TE, 1 DE, 1 CB

    ReplyDelete
  38. Last year the Niners needed five QB's to complete the season. Unfortunately, they only had four. They better draft a QB and pick one up after the draft.

I am hoping when the season starts next year that the Niners come out of the gate smoking hot instead of stuck in the mud.
