The 49ers gave their fans an early Christmas present beating the Washington Commanders 37-20 on Christmas Eve and keeping them in the hunt for not only the 2nd seed, but potentially the 1st seed if the Eagles lose out.
The legend of Brock Purdy continues to grow following this win, as he became only the second QB since 1950 to win his first three starts while also throwing two or more TDs and recording a passer rating above 100 in each game. The poise with which he plays is a testament to his temperament and preparation and it was on full display in this game as he led the 49ers offense to 37 points against one of the best defenses and pass rushes in the NFL. As has been the case with all of his starts, the stat-line won't wow anybody, but there is no denying his ability to keep the offense moving with smart decision-making and hit some big plays when needed. The only real blemish on his day was an intercept which came courtesy of a bobble by Jennings, which was far more Jennings' fault than Purdy's.
While the scoreboard would suggest a game in which the 49ers dominated their opponent, it didn't feel that way throughout the game. In part that comes down to a very tight first half that ended with the scores tied at 7-7; it wasn't until the second half that the 49ers pulled away. But even then, the stats bear out a game that was closer than the scoreboard suggests, as the 49ers didn't blow the Commanders away in terms of yards, while they trailed in terms of time of possession, first downs and third down conversions.
But there were a couple of key areas the 49ers did dominate that decided the game.
First, the 49ers were able to completely shut down the Commanders running game. While they were unable to become the first defense to hold their opponents to under 70 yards for eight straight games, the Commanders only barely topped that and the only reason they did was sheer perseverance. That kept the Commanders behind the sticks for much of the game and was a key factor in the 49ers goal line stand in the first half. The dominance of the run defense actually served to highlight an area the 49ers struggled, which was third down pass defense. The Commanders were in a lot of third and longs in this game yet finished the day converting 7 of 13 third downs including a number of long conversions.
The second area the 49ers dominated in was the big play category. McCloud had a 71 yard TD run to open the scoring (on the ensuing drive after the goal line stand), Kittle had two big TD catches on his way to another big day with Purdy as his QB, Aiyuk had a 54-yard grab which led to a TD, and Jimmie Ward picked of Heinicke deep in Commanders territory. That's not to say the Commanders didn't have some big plays of their own, but overall the Commanders were forced into matriculating down the field while the 49ers were more explosive which led to more points.
While the 49ers came away as fairly comfortable winners in the second half, the sluggishness in the first half and the deficiencies in preventing the Commanders from converting long third downs were areas the team will want to address moving forward to the playoffs. As I commented during the game, the team was displaying good effort throughout, but their was a distinct lack of focus and execution in the first half. It's the sort of issue we've seen from this team in the past, most recently during the opening 7 weeks of the season. The difficulty getting off the field on third down is also not a new one, and with Bosa the only 49ers defender to tally a sack in this game it once again served to highlight how important Bosa is to generating pass rush and closing out opponents drives.
Part of their issues in this game can likely be put down to something of an emotional let down after securing the division title. But at the same time it would be remiss for the coaching staff and players to look at the areas they struggled and look for ways to fix them. And in that regard this game can actually be seen as a good thing, as it gives the team clarity on areas to focus on moving forward.
Also, Merry Christmas everyone!
ReplyDeleteYep, I fully expect those issues to be corrected just as they were last year around this time. Good write up, Scooter.
ReplyDeleteHard to believe this team was 3W-4L at one point and chasing the Seahawks for top of the division. They've been the best team in the NFL over this 8 game winning streak.
DeleteAlso hard to believe there were some fans that were thinking Shanahan had to go, and that McDaniel was the real brains behind the offense.
Great team. Great coach. Now just have to hope the team can maintain their momentum and stay injury free from here.
Yea, Merry Christmas guys!

ReplyDeleteMy one area of concern for the playoffs:
* If KS wants a dominating run game in the playoffs, this O-Line has not shown it can’t provide that. fortunately, the pass blocking has improved.
* Other than Ray-Ray McClouds carry for 71 yards & TD, McCaffrey only had 15 carries for 46 yards, including a 1 yard TD. TDP had 9 carries for 30 yards. 76 yards against a top D isn’t a dominating run game.
* IMO, Purdy & Kittle carried the 9ers offense, completing 15 of 22 passes for 234 yards and 2 TD’s. Kittle had 6 catches for 120 yards and two touchdowns. Brandon Aiyuk also caught 5 passes for 81 yards.
* Reason for optimism: Mitchell, Deebo and Mason should all return and be healthy for the playoffs. And the 9er D continues to be the
best in the NFL.
** this 9er O-Line has not shown it CAN provide that.**
ReplyDeleteMY CHRISTMAS WISH LIST:
ReplyDelete* A second home game at Levi stadium for the 9ers in the playoffs!
* Vikings lose to the Packers week 17 01/01/2023, the 9ers move into the 2nd seed and then the 9ers win out......
Just got home and watched the game. The defense looks really good but has momentarily lapses. Purdy had a good game, and that lone interception was on Jennings. As far as the O-line is concerned it's really hard to criticize them as they are still playing better than expected. The Niners are a really good team and has a great chance to get to the SB. I have full confidence in Purdy to get it done.
ReplyDeleteNiners are now 34 and 35 at Levi.
Purdy's best play may have been that throw-away when he had to elude the defender. He showed great poise.

DeleteFrom watching the game, the 9ers come out a little flat the
1st half. After winning the division and extra days off, they
had a little trouble flipping the switch. The second half they
showed up and the rest is history.

Jake Brendel ranks #4 among NFL centers in pass-blocking efficiency and #17 in run-block grade.
What’s more: Since the CMC takeover in Week 8, Brendel has ranked #8 in run-block grade.
Summary: 49ers are getting top-10 center play even after Alex Mack’s retirement

I saw that, CMC is one of those players who make others better. Good deal.
DeleteMerry Christmas all! Go Niners!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday, Brock Purdy!

Brock Purdy has completed 70.6% of his throws this season that have a targeted depth of 10+ yards downfield. Among QBs with 30+ attempts of 10 yards or more that not only leads the NFL but the next closest is Tua at 61.9%. #49ers
I guess a couple of Washington players paid Purdy the ultimate compliment - something to the effect of disbelief that Purdy was a rookie. Told to Ray Ray.
DeleteMicah Parsons told Michael Irvin that he was sore for two weeks after playing the 49ers in the playoffs.
ReplyDeleteha ha -- heard that interview on 95.7, too.
DeleteOpposing teams are now 1-13 the game following the one they play against the Niners. Chiefs are the sole exception.
And 0-13 the week after playing the 49ers - the Chiefs had a bye after playing the 49ers. And they needed to go to OT to win their next game.

I think there's only 4 49ers players since 2020 that have thrown at least 30+ air yards for TD's. CMC, Beathard, Lance and Purdy.
ReplyDeleteScooter makes a good point about the dominant run defense being crucial part of the Niners' defensive stranglehold. It's necessary to applaud Armstead's important role in this regard.
ReplyDeleteArmstead doesn't get enough love from the fans or the beat writers. That man's the pillar of the D line. He plays the run so well, and his QB rush has improved steadily over the seasons under Kocurek. If he didn't miss those 8 games, Bosa would have 20+ sacks by now putting Strahan's record on notice. It's not a coincidence that 3 of the 4 losses this season happened when he was out with the injury.
Here's Kinlaw on what he thought was Armstead's best play on Saturday and why Armstead deserves more attention.
"He beat two people," Kinlaw said. "He got a quarterback hit. That was the best play I saw all day. To beat two people and still get the quarterback is very, very hard -- a very difficult thing to do. I feel like he doesn't get enough credit when it comes to standing people up for plays and just winning his matchups... He wins a lot of reps. He wins a lot of matchups when there's two people on him. Then in the running game, he's the man. He can go anywhere. He can play any position in the run game. So he doesn't get enough credit."
Yeah, Armstead has quietly become one of the best DTs in the NFL. I know a lot of fans lament the loss of Buckner, but I wouldn't take Buck over Armstead the past two years since Armstead became a full time DT.
DeleteAnd you are right, his pass rush has steadily improved - he used to be really good at pushing guys into the backfield but he would duck his head to do so and lose where the ball was. He doesn't do that as much anymore and is a considerably better player as a result.
Makes you wonder why they ever tried to make him a DE/DT hybrid tbh.
I was one of the few that predicted he'd be Baalke's pick. I'm so glad he's on our team, and I actually preferred him to Buckner. I know Bosa is thrilled at his return, and has an even better shot at a 20 sack year with him playing.
