What Happens Next Year?

 by Undercenter

We all know the story of the last few years. Jimmy Garoppolo was acquired from the New England Patriots for a second-round pick. He came in and dazzled us with wins in his first five games. All JimmyG does is win, when he did. JimmyG has taken the Niners within seven minutes of the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl with a 10-point lead. JimmyG has taken a lot of abuse for losing that game when in fact the defense let the team down. Last year JimmyG with an ailing shoulder and finger once again takes the Niners into the fourth quarter of the NFC title game with the lead. Once again, the defense came up short. That 2021 season was to be JimmyG last for the Niners as the team drafted a young promising but untested rookie Trey Lance. After all the losing seasons in this century it has been quite refreshing to win some games, JimmyG provided us with winning football. However JimmyG has a very serious flaw, availability hence the drafting of Lance.

The 2021 season ended and JimmyG said his goodbye's and had his surgery and had to rehab most of the off season at the Niner facility. As training camp opened JG was regulated to an off field to work out on his own. The Niners wanted desperately to oft JimmyG but there were no takers. JG was not given a playbook or worked out with the team during the whole training camp period.

The Niners are a billion-dollar corporation, and they handed the keys to a young unproven talent with a huge upside. Lance did not win the job it was given to him. Niners paid a huge price for this young man. He got hurt twice in his rookie year and as we all know how the second year went. I never saw anything from any of Lance's appearances that told me he was the franchise quarterback.

The Niners resigned JG to an incentive laden backup contract. A great move by the front office as we all know Lance broke his ankle and out for the year. The backup JG struggled first few games than caught. fire. He was looking really good than wham he breaks his foot. Wow, the Niners are down to their 3rd string QB, the last man taken in the 2022 draft, Mr. Irrelevant, Brock Purdy.

Purdy quickly demonstrated that he was prepared for the moment, and it became apparent that the game wasn’t too big for him. He showed many of the traits that come with a successful quarterback, accurate arm, elusive, take charge, knowledge of the game, eye movement and exudes confidence. There are challenges that he needs to face such as coming from behind, two-minute drills, poor weather. The talk of the NFL has been about Brock Purdy. The experienced fan has witnessed many flashes in the pan, then those flashes come back to earth to never be heard of again. We have no idea how the career is going to go but it is off to a great start.

IMO, when Purdy takes the field, he exudes an “aire” that has only been replicated by one other Niner QB, the great Joe Montana.

Now, for shits and giggles what happens ‘if’ Purdy wins out to include the Super Bowl. Has he earned the starter role for 2023? If so, what happens to Lance? JimmyG has earned starter money and assuredly he will be gone but you never know. A key component that Shanny has alluded too was the fact that it was a smoother transition going from JG to Purdy then it was from Lance to JG. If Purdy wins the job, do you trade Lance and bring in a vet such at Matt Ryan?

This will never happen but in my opinion, Purdy is the starter, and the backup is JimmyG and trade Lance.  That would be a solid QB room.

  1. The transitioning from one QB to another is a really interesting point. But we don't know that it would be easier to transition from Purdy to Garoppolo just because it was easier to go from Garoppolo to Purdy. We don't know what the trajectory of this offense would be now that Shanahan could have two mobile QBs who are proficient downfield. He might not want to transition to Garoppolo even though Garoppolo might be better in the immediate future.

  2. JIMMY GAROPPOLO career playoff stats: 137 YPG, 4 TD, 6 INT, 74.1 Passer Rating. Even worse ... statistically speaking, Jimmy G is the worst postseason - 4th QTR Quarterback in league history, during the Super Bowl era.

  3. It's Stidham at qb for the Raiders guys!

  4. I think the 49ers are in good hands regardless. That's what I am taking away from this.

I think it should be a competition between Lance and Purdy next year no matter how the rest of the season plays out. And no matter who wins, we've seen multiple times how important having a good backup is.

    1. I agree. Make it a fair, true QB competition, unlike these last two seasons. Trey Lance's enormous upside VS Brock Purdy's experience and heady quarterback play. Personally, I suspect Trey's confidence is probably shot at this point, but maybe a true QB competition can help him rebuild it.

Whatever happens, it seems like a good problem to have. Two young, talented QB's, one of whom might just have the most team-friendly contract in the entire NFL!

  5. Not sure why this is worth discussing!
    1) JG is going to get an offer from another NFL team (Jets) that the 9ers can not afford to match! Not with 25 free agents in 2023 and some the 9ers will have to pay more to resign and there is also the mega contract the 9er will sign to extend Bosa, the one player they can't afford to lose.
    2) Purdy's 2023 fate will be determined by how far he and the 9ers go in the playoffs. He has proven he can be a starting QB in the NFL and if he wins the SB, it would be next to impossible for KS to not make him the starting QB in 2023. The worst case for Purdy is he'll compete with Lance to be the starting QB in 2023.
    3) After all the draft picks the 9ers gave up to draft Lance, the 9ers are not trading him in 2023. Not when they can keep both Lance and Purdy on their rookie contracts.
IMO, Purdy will be the starting QB in 2023 and possibly 2024. Lance will be given time to gain the experience he lacks and if he does develop into the QB the 9ers believed he would be, he may eventually become the starting QB?
If Lance does develop into a starting QB, but can't beat out Purdy, then I can see the 9ers trading him.

Agree. It's way to early for any meaningful discussion.

      > JG is going to get an offer from another NFL team
Absolutely. Almost the half the league is thinking of upgrading at that position

      > Purdy's 2023 fate will be determined by how far he and the 9ers go in the playoffs.

Purdy's fate has been already decided, IMO. He has already shown enough to compete for the starting job next season. However, even if Niners win the Super Bowl, he will have to prove himself again next season. IMO, Kyle is not anointing anyone either Lance or Purdy the starter before TC.

      > He has proven he can be a starting QB in the NFL
He has shown that he can very successfully manage a superstar cast of players in Kyle's system and win games making some terrific throws in the process with excellent pass pro. How would he do in a mediocre or bad team?

      > If Lance does develop into a starting QB, but can't beat out Purdy, then I can see the 9ers trading him.

      Agree.

I have loved everything I've seen in Purdy so far. But I'm going a little easy on the hype until DCs have had a dozen or so games of him on tape, and the off-season to work breaking them down. IIRC, Purdy was benched twice in-game by Matt Campbell in his final season -- including a critical game against Iowa. Maybe he's fixed all his problems, maybe he hasn't.

Anyway, Purdy is the best thing that happened to Lance to help accelerate his development. Nothing like competition from a player making much less than him :)

  6. The 49ers have a lot invested in Lance's potential, and the onus will be on Shanny and Lance to see that he realizes that potential. I'm not so sure there will be a true "competition" for the starting quarterback next year unless Purdy wins the Super Bowl.

    1. I think Lance will be given every opportunity to win the job. But I don't think it will be handed to him.

    3. I hope you are right Scooter. Handing him the job just doesn't feel right.

    4. Razor,
I think you may be right. There will likely not be an open competition. There is nothing to be gained by creating drama. I'd think that relative progress of the two QBs will be monitored internally. Griese will play a key role in coaching up Lance.

  7. Scouting Report for Jarrett Stidham:

    Overview By Lance Zierlein
The 2017 Alabama win showed a mobile quarterback with good mechanics and intelligence who played with confidence and was able to convert in key situations. The 2018 tape shows a player who lost both his confidence and poise and began to play a rushed brand of football that seeped into his pre-snap planning and his post-snap accuracy. Stidham went from ascending prospect to developmental quarterback and he needs to find the right set of coaches and system to help rehab his confidence and timing.

    Player Bio:
Stidham began his career at Baylor, but the firing of coach Art Briles due to the sexual assault scandal on campus caused him to look elsewhere. He was a big signing for Briles, a top-50 overall prospect nationally from Stephenville, Texas, who passed for nearly 3,000 yards and 35 touchdowns and ran for almost 1,000 more yards as a senior. Stidham played in 10 games with three starts as a true freshman, completing 69 percent of his passes (75-of-109) for 1,265 yards, 12 touchdowns, and two interceptions. He took online courses at McLennan Community College in 2016 and practiced with a local high school team to keep his arm in shape. The preparation paid off, as he excelled for the Tigers in his first year on the Plains. The SEC Newcomer of the Year and second-team all-conference quarterback completed 66.5 percent of his throws (246-of-370) for 3,158 yards, 18 touchdowns and six interceptions. The highlight of his year was the team’s Iron Bowl win over Alabama (21-of-28, 237 yards). Stidham did not take a step forward as a junior, completing only 60.7 percent of his throws (224-of-369) for 2,794 yards, 18 touchdowns, and five interceptions in a somewhat disappointing 8-5 season

  8. Jimmy maybe to Jets. Carr perhaps to Indy, maybe New Orleans..... Carolina and Houston essentially have openings. Job will be Purdy's if he gets to the SB, otherwise it will be open competition w Lance. No $ for Jimmy w Bosa probably getting $25/yr... I would like to see Mosely return as well- other priority probably Brendel w his performance... DL guys for depth

  9. AES,
I suspect that the 49ers FO would like to see Lance win the starting QB spot based on his draft position and high-end investment.
But this is 8 months away from now.

So far, Purdy has checked almost every box.
But UC, you bring up a very good point. We've yet to see if Purdy can bring the team back from a deficit and working in a two minute offense with the game on the line.
He may very well face these scenario's in the playoffs. No doubt, how Purdy performs under these possible situations will determine Shanahan's decision next August.

    1. The kid has more time to put in before serious conclusions can be made. The thing that attracts me most are the intangibles. When Montana walked on the field, I always felt the Niners were going to win, I get the same feeling with this kid. It's weird I know.

  10. Per NextGenStats, Bosa has recorded 3+ pressures in 8 straight games. That’s the longest streak (also active) going in the NFL at this time.

  11. I see Deebo was back at practice. Remarkable given how bad the injury looked. I hope they keep him out this week though to give him an extra week to heal and then one game to get back into it before the playoffs.

Among QBs with at least 100 drop-backs, Brock Purdy leads the NFL in Touchdown Percentage.

He’s throwing TDs on 7% of his passes, which is higher than Patrick Mahomes’ 6.4% (2nd).

  15. The 2022 49ers are the first team since the 2019 Chiefs to win 8 straight games by 6+ points. The Chiefs defeated went on to finish the 49ers in the Super Bowl.
