Week 13 Post Game Review: 49ers vs Dolphins

By Scooter_McG

The battle between ex-49ers OC Mike McDaniel and his old mentor Kyle Shanahan went the way of the master, with the 49ers coming away with the victory 33-17. The win makes it five on a trot for the 49ers and keeps them a game ahead of the Seahawks in the division race.

Ahead of the game much was made of the battle between the Dolphins offense and 49ers defense. I outlined in my game preview that the 49ers should have little trouble making the Dolphins one dimensional and that proved the case as they were held to just 33 yards on the ground on 8 carries.

It was always going to come down to how the 49ers defense held up against the Dolphins passing game that mattered, and in this contest it was a very one sided affair. The Dolphins started fast start with Tua Tagovailoa connecting with former 49er Trent Sherfield on a 75 yard catch and run on the opening play of the game. It's not the first time the 49ers defense has been a bit slow out of the gate this season and is an area they could stand to improve moving forward. But after that first play the defense played well for the most part, while Tagovailoa, who has been excellent on the season, really struggled throughout with his accuracy as he missed a lot of passes that he should have made and could have been big gains while also being picked off twice.

It could be easy to say the 49ers got a little lucky with some of the missed opportunities the Dolphins had. But that would do a disservice to the 49ers defense and their game plan. Part of Tua's struggles can be placed on the excellent coverage over the middle of the field which forced Tua to look to other areas where he is less accurate. Warner and Greenlaw in particular were excellent once again in this one. And part of it can be attributed to the 49ers DL getting good pressure throughout the game, in particular Nick Bosa who finished with three sacks all told, including the game sealing sack fumble that Greenlaw returned for a TD.

Really the only downside on defense was the two long TDs they gave up - the one to Sherfield as well as a 45 yarder to Tyreek Hill. On both occasions it looked like Hufanga made the wrong decision on who to cover, leaving his receiver wide open for the easy catch with room to run. As good as Hufanga has been, and as good as his instincts on the field can be, he can be found out of position and has been responsible for some ugly big plays against the defense this season.

While the defense won the matchup against the Dolphins explosive offense quite handily, the main story out of this game surrounds the 49ers offense and the QB position. Disaster struck for the 49ers at the end of their opening drive as Jimmy Garoppolo got his foot caught underneath a defender, and is reported to have broken bones in his foot. He is now scheduled for season ending surgery on his foot and will join starting QB Trey Lance on IR.

The injury opened the door for this years Mr Irrelevant, Brock Purdy, to step in and make his first meaningful contributions as the 49ers QB. It is hard enough for any rookie QB to step in and lead his team to victory, let alone a rookie QB taken in the 7th round against an opponent with an 8W-3L record. But he not only came away with the all important win, he looked composed throughout. In the end he outplayed his more illustrious opponent and did a nice job hitting his receivers despite the Dolphins bringing plenty of pressure to try and rattle him and keeping the 49ers running game in check. He was able to keep the offense moving and getting into scoring positions to keep the 49ers ahead for most of the game and putting scoreboard pressure on the Dolphins.

Looking forward, the loss of now both their starting and backup QBs for the season should be seen as a significant hurdle to the team's chances of making the playoffs and being a contender if they make it. While Purdy looked competent and composed in this game, we should expect to see some ups and downs over the next few weeks, which could cost some games. And there is no mistaking that Purdy is a limited passer - he will struggle to threaten the perimeter or deep. But then... the same can be said of Jimmy G. And Purdy has shown throughout his college career that he is a winner and is a 'gamer'.

To help Purdy out the 49ers really need the OL to step up. They've been good this year, but the past two weeks have seen them struggle to create holes for the running game and keep defenders off the QB. It is no coincidence that Jimmy G picked up a knee injury last week and the foot injury this week, as the past two games have, at least to my eyes, been the worst performances by the OL this year.

But while losing Jimmy G will make for a bigger challenge, there should still be strong belief this team can make some noise. The play of the defense continues to be excellent and so long as the offense can limit its errors and take its opportunities the defense is good enough to keep winning games.

  2. Jimmy should have gotten rid of the ball instead of piggyback carrying 3 guys.

I thought Purdy was supposed to have a weak arm. Didn't look like it to me.

Armstead's return did exactly what I knew it would for Bosa, and he's on track to make my prediction of breaking Smith's sack record come true.

  3. Scooter, this one convincing enough for you? :)

Impressive debut from Purdy. We saw him step in, cold, guide the team without missing many beats, mostly avoiding the house the Dolphins brought in attempts to rattle him, threading passes into tight windows, moving the chains in a smack down of that Dolphins team many thought we’d get blown off the field by.

Not much is changed. We still have our ferocious league-leading D, we still have those YACing playmakers on O, we still have a run-first offense. Everything that everyone complained about Jimmy not able to do works to our advantage. If Purdy can’t make the big throws downfield, well wasn’t the knock on Jimmy that neither could he? All Purdy has to do is get it into the hands of his multiple playmakers, that’s exactly what he did on Sunday, and what Kyle will set him up to continue to do.

This team will still be in SB mix, mark my words.

    1. I think we have to expect Purdy will be a lot more up and down than JG.

Purdy leading the 49ers deep into the playoffs will need him to be mostly error free and to make some plays. We saw yesterday that he CAN do it. But can he do it consistently?

Let's not get ahead of ourselves based on one performance against a team that didn't game plan for him.

      Delete
    2. Conversely, a team that didn't game plan *with him*. He executed the Jimmy plan pretty flawlessly.

    3. He did. But we've seen guys step in throughout the league and look good for 1-2 weeks then fade badly. Heck, last week everyone was gaga for Mike White.

    4. Actually I thought White played a heckuva game yesterday. If Berrios holds that 4th and goal strike from him with under 2 to play, Jets likely win that one

  6. The way this defensive line is playing, and as horrible as the Tampa oline is (only 1 original starter still playing) this bodes so well for Bosa to repeat yesterdays performance. If Kinlaw can return this week, even if just playing 50% of the time, it will help SOOO much adding in more depth and freshness, Brady is a statue and will get destroyed.

I don't want to get out over our ski's, but this team should still be able to win every single game the rest of the season and theres no game that they should ever be picked to lose (until further notice following Sunday).

  9. Should the 49ers go after Mayfield?

I think the answer has to be yes. Not necessarily to start - let Purdy have first crack. But if he falters, I would rather have Mayfield than Johnson stepping in.

    1. I wouldn't do it because I don't think Baker has the maturity to fit in with the culture that has been established.

    2. Razor, I think that culture, and the players behind it, would keep Baker in line.

Aren't there a few teams ahead of theNiners on the waver wire though?

    3. Scooter
How much would you be willing to pay for Mayfield?
This is what Cleveland and the Browns agreed to.....
All 3 sides gave a little to make the trade between the Carolina Panthers and Cleveland Browns to happen. The Browns agreed to pay $9.5 million of Baker Mayfield's 2022 salary, the Panthers will pay $5 million, and Mayfield agreed to shave off $3.5 million to help out Carolina. Mayfield does have a chance to earn that money back through incentives. According to Field Yates of ESPN, if Mayfield plays 75% of the regular seasons snaps AND earns 10 wins, it equates to $250k. A divisional round playoff win (with 50% snaps) nets $500k, NFC championship win (with 50% snaps) = $500k, Super Bowl win (with 50% snaps) = $750k.

    4. GEEP, whoever claims him will owe him $1.3M.

Rib... I don't see any reason for a team not in the playoff picture to make a claim for a guy that will be a FA at the end of the year. And who in the playoff hunt aside from the 49ers needs a QB?

      Delete
    5. Scooter
For my clarification: So you're saying what Mayfield is owed for the 2022 season, Any team claiming Baker Mayfield on waivers would assume the remaining $1,349,444 guaranteed on his contract?

      Delete
    6. I could see the Seahawks claiming him so Shanny cannot.

      Delete
    7. That's fine by me too. Any team that claims him just to keep him away from the 49ers is the kind of nervous nellie that won't pose much of a challenge.

      Delete
    8. Heck, if they claimed him just for the comp pick (if that applies) that might be worth it alone

      Delete
    9. Maybe. But who is giving Mayfield a big contract next season after the past two years?

    1. it was actually hard to decipher where the players/staff stood on Lance following camp..... I think the one thing we don't know as of yet is how well he can process the defensive alignment/pressure to make his decisions........ JimmyG has been stellar, and yesterday Purdy showed a lot. Amusingly, I had to drive somewhere last night after the game and don't listen to sports radio, and after Miami blitzed him 85% of the time, the pundits remained insistent that the season was over. Purdy can actually work in the 49ers favor as teams will look to bring pressure, allowing chances on the edges or over the top/down the middle.

      * Ingram's blunder of stepping out a yard short on 2nd could have ended the Saints season (granted, I know he went out w a possibly injury), but that would have gone a long way to icing the game

      Delete
    2. I saw more out of Purdy in one game than I did Lance in his three or four games. Purdy was my choice for a starting QB with the understanding that no rookie QB has ever won the Super Bowl. We don't know much about the kid other than he was a four-year starter out of Iowa State and the fact that the Niners saw enough of the guy to actually draft him and to put him on the 53 man squad for fear of losing him.

Purdy has played one game and did quite well. However there have been many QB's that have one or two really good games and then never heard of them again. From his training camp the one thing that stood out to me was his elusiveness. I was impressed with how he stood in the pocket against a fierce pass rush. "If" Purdy can learn defenses and deliver the ball on time and consistently he will be a fine QB maybe better then JG and Lance.

I really like JG and I wish him the best of life. I thought he was a good QB and seem to be ascending toward being a really good QB. The same problem still haunts him - availability. Who knows what is going to happen to him.

      Delete
    3. Under, one thing we know about Lance. Albeit a small sample size (like everything else about him), he's no more durable than Jimmy.

      Delete
    4. Rib, I have the same thoughts. He was hurt last year and again this year, availability so far isn't his strong suit.

      Delete
    5. Depending on this years outcome, maybe Kyle should shelve his "dual-threat" dreams and keep 2 winning QBs with similar strengths on the roster. Jimmy and Brock, call them QB1a and QB1b, insert either as injury dictates.

    1. Everything I have heard about him ever since he was drafted makes me think he is pretty much a more mobile version of Nick Mullens.

Which is absolutely fine. If that is what he is, the 49ers can win their fair share of games with him at QB. It is easy to point out that Mullens W-L record wasn't great, but you have to keep in mind who was missing due to injury while he was the QB. Purdy will have a much better supporting cast than Mullens had in most of his starts.

  22. I am curious how Bowles schemes - I think he will have some blitzes, but not as much as one might expects....... I think he runs a tight zone and waits to see if Brock can beat him while focusing on taking the run away- I would LIKE to see more Mason touches and they will have to try and challenge down the middle of the field w Jennings/Kittle- some designed QB outside runs would be a bonus....... they just can't afford to get him hurt at this point tho

For one game Purdy had a fine day, he showed that he could fit the ball into tight windows, can complete a pass while getting drilled, he is elusive, he commands the huddle, plays bigger than his size, has moxie, the game wasn't too big for him; but the one thing that stood out to me was that he was PREPARED for the moment, and it showed. I don't know how Purdy's story is going to go, but at the moment the introduction is captivating and left me with wanting to see more. We shall find out if he is the real deal or another flash in the pan.
