Good afternoon everyone and welcome to your live blog for 49ers football. Today we have a matchup that has become personal with the Dolphins Mostert bad mouthing the 49ers front office for the way they handled his injury, and a passive aggressive slap at Jimmy Garoppolo's ability. Student returns to his classroom to face his Teacher in what should have been the game of the week. The return of Armstead should not be underestimated as he's not only going be a skyscraper for Tua to throw over, but he'll also free up Bosa, which is bad news for the Dolphins backup left and right tackles. I expect a physical game from the 49ers on both sides of the ball. Mason will get his first start and his running style and fresh legs could have him rushing for 100 yards today. Defensively the 49ers will look to drop the ball carriers with hard hits making them apprehensive catching the ball. I like the 49ers big in this game. Go Niners!
#49ers inactives:
TE Ross Dwelley
DT T.Y. McGill
LB Curtis Robinson
OL Spencer Burford
I assume Brunskill will replace Burford. Deebo, Williams and Armstead all active - good deal.
ReplyDeleteYep, Brunny back at his RG position. Pass pro might suffer but I expect the running game to improve.
DeleteIn some ways, this game is like one against the Rams. Both coaching staff know each very well --with one exception: Niners' limited familiarity with Josh Boyer's D. The latter spent 13 seasons with the Patriots -- mostly as DB coach.
ReplyDeleteDolphins won't know what hit them when the 49ers play at a playoff level.
DeleteSun's back behind the clouds, a light sprinkle but probably will be very occasional during game..
ReplyDeleteAre you in attendance, Mood?
DeleteNo, but I heard Jennifer Lee Chan report from Levi's. I also live about 10 miles from Levis and we are often in the path of the rain before it reaches Levis.
DeleteThat didn't take long.
ReplyDeleteUh oh. Jimmy G taken by cart to the locker room.
ReplyDeleteI hope they don't ride CMac to the ground. We need that 100 yards from JP that Razor promised.
ReplyDeleteAgree. Sometimes I get the feeling that what you are saying is not a consideration for Shanahan, at least not until the game is well in hand and almost over.
DeleteNice - Mr. Irrelevant
ReplyDeleteNice play call for the TD. Setup them up with CMAC beforehand.
ReplyDeleteDefense you got to play lights out...
ReplyDeleteNow we get a chance to see what difference Griese has made in coaching up Purdy.
ReplyDeleteI have a feeling Purdy will be fine.
DeleteYep. I've said it multiple times, but I really feel that Griese has been a very positive influence on Jimmy G. I suspect that the coaching up you mention will likely be to minimize putting the ball in harms way.
DeleteYeah, he just needs to manage the game without boneheaded mistakes.
DeleteNiners' CBs seem to be getting beaten like a drum. Good thing that Tua is a little off.
ReplyDeleteThese endless runs up the middle for 2-4 yards will put Purdy in uncomfortable of thirds and longs.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking the same thing. KS don't play scared let the kid QB.
DeleteWhatever happened to the outside zone runs? I realize that maybe the speed isn't there like it was with Mostert, but how about every once in awhile at least.
ReplyDeleteOr carries for Mason? Dude got 1 carry and got 11 yards...after that zip.
DeleteJack is reporting that Jimmy G is out with a foot injury.
ReplyDeleteYessir! Finally a great OZ run.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, this game may be one where a rookie QB learns the NFL game.
ReplyDeleteGood thing Niners carried three QB's
ReplyDeleteIs there currently a backup to Purdy??
DeleteOn the practice squad there is. I think Juice and maybe CMC are the emergency QB's
DeleteJacob Eason is on the practice squad.
DeleteDavid Lombardi
ReplyDelete@LombardiHimself
Halftime EPA. Brock Purdy has been significantly more efficient than Tua Tagovailoa.
Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson Jr. have combined for 13 yards on 5 carries through one half against the 49ers
Hey KS how about some roll outs, eh get away from the pressure.
ReplyDeleteFins D are just crashing the LoS
ReplyDeleteC'mon let's get a TD now!
ReplyDeleteRookie QB - two timeouts lost already. Let's hope it doesn't become a problem at the end of the game.
ReplyDeleteOkay defense you got a 13-point lead.
ReplyDeleteSpoke too soon. Hufanga should have stayed deep.
DeleteArmstead was out on that play. Wonder if it's for limiting snap count.
ReplyDeleteGeorge comment:
ReplyDeleteWe needed a TD on the last turnover not a FG. Amazing he’s not using Mason more especially in the RZ.
Fins intent on stopping the run and put the game in Purdy's hands
DeleteD does its job.
ReplyDeleteIt is on the offense now...for once get a meaningful drive going and get 3 points or better just run the clock down.
I have to admit, I've questioned the notion of paying Bosa an average of $30 million per year, but he certainly made a case for it today.
ReplyDeleteThat's a statement win. You lose your starting QB early on against a quality team like the Dolphins and it should be game over. Great team performance to pull that off.
ReplyDeleteWhat a game! I thought after Jimmy's injury, we are gonna be blown out again a la chiefs.
ReplyDeleteBut D holds strong and Kudos to Shanahan/CMC/Deebo and of course Mr Irrelevant! This D is legit!
Griese should get some credit for Brock's performance today. Made some rookie mistakes but by and large played a nice game.
ReplyDeleteUh, oh. Jimmy G broke some bones in his foot. Sounds like he might be done for the season.
ReplyDeleteSeeing that Jimmy G will have season ending surgery.
DeleteJimmy getting season-ending surgery.
ReplyDeleteHey guys, I just deleted the thread started by reasons.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately there isn't much razor and I can do about him. All I can say is what we already know - it is disgusting behaviour to cheer about a player's injury and disgusting behaviour to use another's handle when posting. But sadly is all par for the course for Mr Unreasonable.
I commend your decision Scooter/Razor. Hopefully the other moderator at a different blog site does the same.

DeleteMaybe there's a chance to get Lance back??
ReplyDeleteKS said no in his post game presser.
DeleteWTF! Who is using my handler?
DeleteBut I thought Lance's injury was 8-10 weeks?
DeleteFoot surgery for JG
ReplyDeleteBittersweet win
DeleteIt's really too bad. The way I see it Purdy might as well be the first rookie QB to win the Super Bowl.
DeleteHaha, that's why they'd call it a miracle were it to happen. We'll be lucky to win the division let alone a SB.
DeleteI think if we beat Tampa and the Hawks that pretty much clinches the Division. Niners would be 10 - 4 and would hold a 3 game edge over the Hawks with 3 to go and the Hawks have a game with KC after the Niners.
DeleteIt's gonna be a challenge for sure.
DeleteLosing your starting QB in week 2 would sink most teams season right there. 49ers have been lucky to have Jimmy G able to step in and get them this far since.
DeleteNow we will see if their other backup option is able to keep them competitive and make a run for the playoffs. But expectations shouldn't be too high.
expectations should be lowered, but maybe that's a good thing. Playing with house money has it's advantages!
DeleteThe O-line is going to make or break the season. The defenses are going to blitz, relentlessly. Everybody on offense has to be aware of the that fact and KS is going to have to call plays to combat it. If the Niners can control the blitz from here on out they still have the ability to win it all. Purdy will be fine.
ReplyDeleteI can already picture sweat building up on McGlinchey's brow just thinking about it.
DeleteNiners sign Josh Johnson from Bronco's PS to back up Purdy.
ReplyDeleteThe Barnacle's cousin.
DeleteRazor,
DeleteIIRC, Harbaugh had defended keeping JJ on and off as a third string QB in 2014 (behind Gabbert) saying that Josh would play in the league for a long time. But I don't think Harbaugh thought that he'd be around at 36 playing for this 14th team in his 13th season of bouncing around.
Tells me they're gonna do or die with Purdy unless he gets injured.
DeleteCan we talk Rivers out of retirement?
ReplyDeleteI gave Kyle a hard time for running McCaffrey into the ground, when he has a 235 lb RB (Mason) ready and waiting with fresh legs. But truth be told, Kyle deserves a lot of credit tonight! Kyle was fantastic in the way he morphed his offense today, and shout out to winning back-to-back coach challenges on key plays! Minus his misuse of Jordan Mason, make no mistake, this was a finely called game for Kyle Shanahan …. borderline brilliant!
ReplyDeleteGood work, Kyle!
Next man up!
ReplyDeleteI have to give 49Reasons his due! He was right about Jimmy all along!
ReplyDeleteJimmy Garoppolo was obviously fool's gold! 49Reasons was right, again!
ReplyDeleteWow - injuries happen all the time, shall we blame KS for the play call. I mean reasons did that when Lance got hurt. Reasons is a hater giving him any just do is just wrong.
ReplyDeleteYou're right, undercenter, I am just saying that he's right much more often than he is wrong. Credit where credit is due.
DeleteSucks, plain sucks.
ReplyDeleteAt least the rehab should be relatively straightforward for him as it sounds like broken bones but no tears. Not sure anyone will give him that big contract ever with his injury history.
As for Purdy, he has moxy and knows where to go with the ball and is calm under pressure. Sadly his arm is lacking majorly. I am a bit concerned when teams start seeing what throws he likes to make and start taking those away... the question is will defenses catch up faster than his processing and game reps allow him to advance.
I am ready to roll w Purdy- he looked really good in preseason and I thought he played exceptionally well today for getting tossed into the fire - bootleg/rollouts Shanny..... or just dump it to CMC in the flat ALL DAY.
ReplyDelete* My concern is actually on the back end- I think Hufunga and Gipson may get exposed in coverage against wide sets........... would prefer Womack in the slow and get Ward back to FS
