Week 6 Matchup: San Francisco 49ers vs. Atlanta Falcons

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to the live blog. Reports out of Atlanta suggest a large contingent of 49ers fans are in attendance which could create a situation where the Falcons might need to use their silent count on offense. That would be quite the advantage for the visiting team. Go Niners!

    1. I'd be surprised if he is, but when has a rookie wr got significant snaps under Shanny? Trent Taylor maybe and that's only because he had no one else. He didn't even belong in the league, lol.

Charles Omenihu appears to be the base-down starter at DE while Dontae Johnson was taking snaps as the nickel cornerback.

Easier said than done, but that is the only way we get back in rhythm.

  12. Well Shanny you are going to have to dial it up.

  13. Well, with Jimmy at QB, that's probably game, unless the 49ers defense can create soe turnovers. Meanwhile Kyle has the prefect 230 lbs RB who apparently isn't allowed to play on offense because he's too young..

    1. Jordan Mason would be a dynamo as a short yardage RB. Too bad Kyle doesn't play talented rookies until he has absolutely no choice, rather than using them sparingly in order to gain them some experience, so that they are more prepared to play if called upon. He has TDP as well, but Kyle is determined to run Jeff Wilson into the ground.

    2. It's such a simply formula, when the 49ers defense isn't playing at an elite level!

      - take away the 49ers run game
      - crowd the middle of the field
      - limit the 49ers predictable screen passes

Meanwhile, Kyle has a stallion RB who flashes like the next Hershel Walker, but he can't get an opportunity, even when the 49ers are struggling running the football.

      Kyle Shanahan = OVERRATED!

  20. Jimmy's arm is so weak, he can't even throw the football more than 40 yards in the air, which makes a 50 yard Hail Mary, basically impossible! Oh well, at least he's good at throwing screen passes.

    2. Right, near perfect ball from Jimmy (who I gotta say is more than adequate today). But I'm talking about the percentages.

How many Deep passes has Jimmy completed? One, two? 3 passes are not how you start the second half when your D is already gassed.

Now with a two point deficit, I'm afraid that Kyle will abandon the run game altogether. Bad things happen when game is solely placed in Jimmy's hands.

    2. As I outlined in my preview, this was what I feared. That's the formula for beating the 49ers. Just have to be willing to stick with the running game.

      Delete
    3. Correction, that's the formula for beating our B team. I've yet to see that against our A team.

      Delete
    4. Even against the starters that is the best plan for opponents. The defense is built to stop 3rd and long. But can be worn down.

      Delete
    5. Until I see it done, I don't believe there's a team that can run the ball 40 times against the 49ers A team.

      Delete
    6. The theme has been the same in all three losses this year. Each team ran 35+ times.

    7. I haven't seen a team run and impose their will on the 49ers A team like the Falcons were able to do today.

      Delete
    8. No, of course not. That isn't what I was saying though. Best way to beat the 49ers is to stick with the run even if it isn't working early in the game. In this one it was an easy decision to stick with the run as it was working.

      Delete
  31. Where's Razor? I just wanted to remind him of our debate after the Falcons signed Mariota. I said I'd rather have Mariota than Jimmy, because there is so much more you can do with him schematically, whereas Jimmy is one-note. Jimmy does ONE THING well, and that's the short to intermediate stuff, mostly between the hashes. His numbers are very deceiving because he's throwing short passes to the best YAC players in the league.

That's simply not good enough in 2022!

  37. It's always hard to win with so many good players out. And to do so you really need to play a clean game.

That's the most frustrating part of this loss. The Falcons were good but the 49ers had their opportunities. Too many mistakes cost them.

Gave them 7 points with the fumble. Dropped what would've been a couple of big plays that ended up stalling drives. Had an easy TD in right corner but Kittle didn't do what his QB was telling him to do. And had a Falcons scoring drive all but stopped with 3rd and forever but gave Mariota an easy escape. It all adds up to an L against a team that just played smart, conservative, mistake free football.

    1. No question we did our part to contribute in the loss, but there is a breaking point where injuries are concerned. We were on the precipice going into the game, and the Falcons game plan was wise to take advantage of it and push us past.

    3. Scooter: It's just that it's hard for me to remember a game where I thought that all phases of the team, offense, defense and special teams played well.

      Delete
    4. Razor, the injuries were a big factor. Yet the Falcons offense only scored 21 points.

49ers offense should have been good enough to cover that.

      Delete
    5. Hammer made a good point that the only defender missing from the front seven who started last week was Nick Bosa.

      Delete
    6. Falcons made mistakes. We just didn't capitalize on them.

The 49ers offense made mistakes and had plenty of drops which took away any chance to sneak out with a victory.

      Delete
    7. Defensive front philosophy is to come at you in waves, keeping guys fresh. You can't do that two weeks in a row on turf and make the kind of mistakes the 49ers made today.

      Delete
    8. What mistakes did the Falcons make? They were pretty few and far between. There will always be some, but there's weren't glaring.

Cubus, you make a good point re: 49ers playing a clean game. You probably need to go back to middle of last season during that stretch where they got themselves back on track.

Even last week, which I glibly used as an example, had its issues. Particularly in the first half. Panthers just blinked first and the 49ers were able to run away with it at the end.

      Delete
    9. Kyle Shanahan's offense is broken. The sooner you guys come to terms with that, the better, IMO.

Stop the run, clog the middle of the field, and you can beat Kyle Shanahan almost every week, unless you turn the ball over a bunch of times. It's really that simple.

      Delete
    10. Once again, the Niners beat themselves. It's a story that continues to live on.

      Delete
    11. 5 penalties for 40 yards. Not perfect.

      Delete
    12. The Niners' defense is great, but they have to leave everything they have on the football field every week, just to make up for Kyle's lackluster offense, and that takes it's toll physically.

      Delete
    13. 3W-5L at the bye!

      Delete
    14. Do me a favor guys, and point out to Scooter that it sure looks like McCorkle 'Mac' Jones has been holding back the Patriots offense. Thanks.

      Delete
  38. Like I told you guys last week, if the 49ers don't win the turnover battle they lose. Kyle doesn't have the ability to hold a big lead late, or win a game in which they don't flat out win the turnover battle. Kyle Shanahan was outcoached today, and the big difference is that the Falcons have a dynamic QB, while the 49ers QB is extremely limited! MY gosh, they can't even run a hurry up offense! That's PATHETIC!

Now you see why Kyle needed to find a dynamic upgrade at QB. Kyle's offense is tired, and predictable with Jimmy, and the 49ers are never winning a Super Bowl as long as Jimmy is at the helm!

    ReplyDelete
  39. And I'll never understand why Jimmy can't settle feet. How hard is that to learn? Quit tapping your feet Jimmy, because half the time you end up throwing off the wrong foot, and lose both accuracy and strength. Not that his arm is very strong to begin with, as we saw on his hilariously lame hail-mary attempt!

    ReplyDelete
  40. The 49ers will likely be 3-5 at the bye week! Buckle up boys, and stop blaming injuries, because their offense is pretty darn healthy besides Jimmy.

  44. The good news.....NFC "contenders" like Bucs, Packers, Rams are all 3-3 or below. There are like 4 teams with a game above .500 - The Eagles, Cowboys, Giants and Vikings. That's it. And we play none of them this year.

The bad news....the injuries make the effort from D unsustainable. Unless the Offense pulls its own weight, we might miss the playoffs altogether.

    ReplyDelete
  45. As much as Wilson's fumble-TD was awful and put them in an early hole, it wasn't what lost them the game. They did a great job getting back level after that.

They lost the game on two plays after that. A 3rd and 13 on defense where they let Mariota escape the pressure up the middle for a 1st down, which ended in the Falcons 3rd TD just before the half. And on the 49ers opening series of the second half where Shanahan called three straight passes... one of which was a perfect deep ball down the middle to Ray Ray which he dropped. That shouldn't have been three straight passes to open the half. And despite that mistake, it should have worked out in the 49ers favour except for Ray Ray.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Best game I've ever seen Mariota play. He was the 11th man the defense had to account for. That's the hope for Lance.

    2. "That shouldn't have been three straight passes to open the half.
Why do you say that? Maybe you wouldn't have called those but the fact is that Ray Ray should have caught it and it likely ends in a TD. Some would say that is unexpected play calling by KS, which fooled Atlanta (at least on the Ray Ray pass) that should have led to a TD. Now near the end of the game the play calling seemed to lead to sluggish, plodding plays.

      Delete
    3. Mitchell would never have fumbled. Wilson has always fumbled the ball on occasion.

      Delete
    4. Missed tackles all day long. Injuries, dropped passes, Dweelley drop was equal as bad as Ray Ray's. The fumble, the second interception, special teams, all contributed to the loss. It was a total team lose.

      Delete
    5. Cubus, they were down one score and I felt it was really important to have a good drive to open the half, reset the tone. Shanahan instead went for the kill shot.

Yes, it should have worked. But I don't like the thought process there.

The 49ers ended up with a run-pass mix of close to 1:3. It is exactly the opposite of how this team wins games.

      Delete
    6. Not that Ray Ray shouldn't have caught that deep pass down the seem, he probably should have, but it was certainly NOT a perfect pass. The ball was was drifting to Ray Ray's left, and he could only get his finger tips on it. He should have dove, but again, that's a far cry from a "perfect pass" as Scooter has suggested.

If there is one thing us fans, and the league knows, it's that Jimmy can't throw the deep ball with any kind of accuracy. It's the main reason Kyle's offense is stuck in the mud. The only long pass plays are actually quick-hitting short passes, that Deebo gains more yards on than most WR's. On any other football team Jimmy Garoppolo would be ranked 25-30th in passing yards.

      Delete
    7. Under, Womack taking his eyes off Pitts for a TD.

      Delete
    8. Oh please - the pass was perfect. Ray Ray flailed his arms around at the top of his route which slowed him down and got him off balance, and the ball still hit him in both of his hands, not his fingertips.

      Delete
    9. Yeah I thought the same on the 3 passes to open the half. Didn't think that was too smart. You are not sending the right message to your team and the opposition when you come out passing and run not even once.

Also, not sure if you guys noticed..... Arthur Smith yelled at AJ Terrell to fall down within the field of play when AJ was injured, to give time for the Falcons D to regroup. That was real smart.

These are the type of situations where Kyle Shanahan needs to improve, if he ever wants to win the superbowl....or be a .500 Head coach (I can't believe I'm saying this!!).

      Delete
    10. Yes Razor, so many mistakes that I can't keep track of them.

      Delete
    11. I have a picture of Ray-Ray reaching full reach and barely getting the tips of his fingers on the pass. Even if Ray Ray misplayed it, which he might have, Jimmy didn't help him out. It wasn't exactly a 'very catchable" ball. Jimmy's deep balls are always just off enough to cause problems. But yah, I'd rather see Danny Gray running that route, but Kyle has serious trust issues, and would rather trust Ray Ray, who everyone knows has bad hands, just because he's been in the league longer, even though the Steelers cast him off.

      Delete
    12. Bottom line - there's plenty of blame to go around, but it starts and in my book ends, with the 49ERS HC/OC!!!!

    1. "Stop blaming the play-calling"? Wow, that's rich. in 2019 the 49ers had the most dynamic rushing attack in the NFL. They were running all kinds of creative motion, getting the ball to different ball carriers on all sorts of exotic zone concepts.

Nowadays that 49ers have the most vanilla rushing attack in the NFL. Somehow Kyle mistook having a "wide-back" (Deebo) as having a creative rushing attack. It's not the same thing. I have no idea what today's game plan was. You can say they fell behind by 14 early, so the abandoned the run game, but you can't say that actually, because they quickly tied the game backup up again.

It's not all the play-calling. It's the overall head coaching that is the problem. Kyle is a control freak who refuses top put trust in his young players. We all saw 230 lbs - JORDAN MASON in the preseason, but for those who were privileged enough to spend time with the 49ers during training camp, they'd realize that Jordan Mason has the whole package. he's big, he's explosive, and he runs a beast out of hell! Yet, Kyle decided he'd rather use the castoff - Tevin Coleman, who has nothing left in his legs. Sure, he can catch a team off guard like last week, but anyone with eyes would know that Jordan Mason brings more to the running game than Tevin Coleman, who averaged 0.9 YPC today on 4 carries. That's all on KYLE, and Kyle's trust issues.

Same goes for OC - Jake Brendel. Anyone who watched Brendel in training camp knew he wasn't starting material. Do you want to know what the other issue with the offense is besides play calling? JAKE BRENDEL!!!!!! And I told all of you guys he was a problem way back in July!

KYLE SHANAHAN get's an F- grade today. Jimmy was somewhere between a C- and a D+, and the 49ers rushing attack (Jake Brendel - F-) is now the least creative rushing attack in the NFC!
