Week 6 Post Game Review: 49ers @ Falcons

By Scooter_McG

The 49ers finish their two game east coast road trip with a disappointing loss to the Atlanta Falcons, falling 28-14. The loss drops the 49ers to 3-3 on the season and a shared lead of the NFC West with the Rams and Seahawks.

Looking at the two teams at the start of the season this would have been considered one of the 49ers easiest games on the schedule, but a slew of injuries - primarily to the previously top rated defensive unit - and a Falcons team that plays a tough-minded, run-first brand of football made this a much more difficult encounter than initially thought.

In the end the Falcons wore down the 49ers mostly second string defense through their rushing attack, accumulating 168 rushing yards on 40 carries. This took all the pressure off Marcus Mariota who was able to play an efficient game under little duress completing 13 of his 14 passes for 129 yards and two scores (to go with one rushing touchdown).

On offense, the 49ers running game was all but non-existent. They only rushed 16 times all game (including a QB sneak and two scrambles by Jimmy G) and when the did run they did so with little success. This led to a quick three and out on the 49ers opening drive and on the second drive Jeff Wilson committed the ultimate sin of coughing up the football which was returned for another score and an early 14-0 deficit.

After the fumble Kyle Shanahan switched gears and went to a pass heavy offense. It worked on the next two drives which, with the help of a long punt return by Ray Ray McCloud, allowed the 49ers to quickly get back on level terms through two touchdowns to Brandon Aiyuk.

The second Aiyuk touchdown was, unfortunately, the last bright spot for the 49ers in this contest as they became their own worst enemies thereafter. The success on those two drives, combined with the lack of success running the football earlier, seemed to convince Shanahan he needed to stick to an aerial attack for the remainder of the game. And if it wasn't for some egregious drops, blocking issues that led to flags, and a miscommunication between Kittle and JG, the plan may have worked. Unfortunately those types of issues happen all too often whenever the 49ers try and win a game through the air.

The Falcons were deserved winners of this game and the better team. But even so, and despite the raft of injuries, it still felt like a game there for the taking if not for the errors.

If I was to summarise what happened in this one succinctly it would be this - the Falcons out-49er'ed the 49ers. Their game plan on offense was exactly what Shanahan wants to do to an opponent - run it down the opponents throat and play efficiently in the passing game. And on defense, the Falcons achieved exactly what the 49ers aim to achieve - take away the run early and get the opposition believing they need to pass their way to victory. Shanahan will no doubt have some soul searching to do after this one.

Unfortunately it doesn't get easier for the 49ers from here. More injuries came out of this game, including Mooney Ward, and next up they have a pissed off Chiefs team coming to town. Let's hope they are able to get some players returning from injury and reset their minds to the task to be above .500 before the bye.

  1. I do not think I have ever seen the number of injuries to the starters to any team ever. Unlike the Chicago and Denver losses, this loss I can stomach. I know the Niners are a really good team and beset with injury after injury. Still the Niners had a chance to win the game and due to several factors, such as self-inflicted wounds they didn't. In order to win with all those injuries, the healthy players have to play mistake free ball, and they certainly didn't.

I still feel the team will reach the playoffs but honestly if they don't heal, they won't go far.

  2. Injuries and inconsistency seem to be the hallmarks of this team (and inconsistency doesn't just apply to the second team). It doesn't seem like the really good teams (KC and Buffalo) have the inconsistency issues as often.
Scooter: You say KS needs to do some soul searching. If he were responsible for the defense I could understand that better. But the offense is not as beaten down as the defense. Mitchell and Williams are the only real losses that I can think of and Jimmy had all day to throw yesterday so OL with regards to passing doesn't seem to have been an issue. 6 years as the HC and offensive play caller and he needs to do soul searching?
Apparently, the Chiefs are only a 2.5 point favorite. I expect a thorough beat down, but if the 49ers can keep it somewhat competitive will consider that a good sign.

    2. Cubus, any time you get beaten at your own game, where your opponent forced you off your game, there should be a bit of reflection and soul searching going on.

  3. Not sure about the soul searching given Shanny has done what no other head coach or team has been able to do, and that's get to two NFC Championship games and a Super Bowl in 3 seasons. Win against the Chiefs and Shanny's soul will be redeemed.

    5. As per my reply to cubus, if Shanahan, who recently reiterated his stance that the goal is 40 carries, doesn't pause a moment to think about how quickly and easily he gave up on the running game, he isn't taking the right lessons from this game. Every coach should be doing a bit of soul searching throughout a season.

    6. Pete's a great coach but he's near the end of the road. I'm grateful we have Shanny and if he wasn't here, his phone would be blowing up for a HC'ing position in the NFL.

    7. In the last 3 years he's done that, no NFC HC has done that.

If you're using JH and PC as examples you sort of prove the point the dudes a good coach, putting him in their air.

    8. Andy Reid is no longer in the NFC. To be crystal clear, no current HC or team in the NFC has ever done what Shanny has been able to do in 3 seasons.

    9. Of course, I just used Reid as an example since he went 3 NFCC in a row with a SB appearance with the Eagles. And I know he is on his way out, but Pete still a current HC in the NFC with a better accomplishment in a 3 year span. But KS is not done yet and lets hope he could give us that elusive 6th SB! that is all that matters.

  10. Kyle Shanahan is cooked. He's been EXPOSED! He has an offense loaded with playmakers, and not only is his team .500 thru six games (vs mediocre talent) his offense looks like a high school offense now that McDaniel is down in Miami.

In Kyle's 6th season, with an offense loaded with elite playmakers, the 49ers offense ranks 19th in total yards, 19th in point per game. They are currently a .500 football team despite having a defense that, going into Sunday, ranked FIRST in nearly every single meaningful category. If it wasn't what has been an elite defense, the 49ers would probably be 0W-6L right now, despite a weak strength of schedule.

Mike McDaniel, in his first year as HC, has Miami's offense ranked 8th in total yards, 3rd is passing yards, 17th in points per game, with a rookie kid named Skylar Thompson basically making 2 starts at QB.

Speaking of rookie QB's, the NE Patriots offense looks far superior to the 49ers, and they don't have nearly the same level of playmakers, and they also have a rookie QB named Bailey Zappie running the offense. Heck, nobody even knows who's running their offense, even thou it appears defensive specialist - Matt Patricia is currently calling the plays.

It's pathetic. The 49ers went from having one of the most dynamic zone rushing attacks in the NFL, to one of the most vanilla, creatively bankrupt attacks. The fact is, since Kyle took over this team in 2017, he's been outshined by both of his defensive coordinators, and every season Kyle's team has mostly been carried by his defense.

And the injuries ... Oh my, the injuries. It simply be bad luck. Unless we are to believe that the 49ers are somehow cursed to suffer twice as many key injuries as any other team, year in and year out, something Kyle is doing to get his team prepared physically, AINT WORKING! And Kyle doesn't seem to have a cluse on how to fix it.

Kyle might be insane. He is a control freak at his core. All HC's are control freaks, but Kyle takes it to an entirely different level. That's why he said no to allowing TOM BRADY to finish his career with the 49ers. It's why the one position he can't seem to figure out is the one position in which he has to have complete control.

Unless he brings in Tom Brady this offseason, and hands over some of his control, Kyle Shanahan will Never win a Super Bowl, and things will only go south from here!

    1. Oh, and I can't post about Kyle's 49ers without talking about the 4th QTR of yesterday's game. I've been watching the NFL incessantly since 1982. I've never seen a team down 14 points, show absolutely ZERO sense of urgency as the game clock kept ticking away, minute by minute, with the 49ers having not scored a single point yet in the 2nd half.

In the 4th QTR, and one of the few passes Jimmy attempted that was either a srenn pass, or withing 10 yards of the LOS< Jimmy gets picked off. Of course he does. Jimmy is the worst 4th QTR Quarterback I have EVER SEEN. But they get the ball back down 14 points with about 10:00 minutes left, and Kyle decides to dink and dunk his way down the field, as his offense goes 16 PLAYS in over 8:00 minutes of posession, with ZERO sense of urgency, and when they come away without scoring, THAT'S THE GAME! There is a reason that teams go into the hurry up offense down 14 points inside 8 minutes left in the 4th QTR, because if you keep huddling up, and dinking and dunking your way down the field, if you eventually come away empty, which happens often against NFL defenses, then basically have no chance to come back at that point. It leaves you ZERO margin for error.

It was Kyle's 4th QTR clown show yesterday, that reminded me of every 4th QTR clown show of his, in every big game I can ever remember seeing him coach, that finally convinced me he's in way over his head as a play-calling Head Coach.

KYLE SHANAHAN is basically the emperor with no clothes! He is the most overrated coach in the NFL. He's been riding on his father's coattails his entire career. He chokes in the 4th QTR of just about every big game he's been a part of as a HC and/or Offensive Coordinator. And frankly, he's getting outcoached now on a weekly basis.

Kyle is finally being exposed for who he is .... "just a guy with the last of Shanahan, taking credit for a nerdy genius named Mike McDaniel, who spent 7 days a week burning the midnight oil in order to keep the guy with the famous last name ahead of the competition"

    2. Kyle Shanahan is simply TOO emotional to be a HC/OC. I've been saying this for years. Kyle has his strengths, and I'll be the first to acknowledge that. The problem with having him in charge of the entire team, and the offensive play calling, is that he allows his emotions to cloud his judgement in every sense, and that's a FATAL flaw for a head coach!

It's why Kyle get's OUTCOACHED in every big game he's a part of!

      Delete
    3. In fact, a strong case can be made that Kyle and Jimmy are the worst BIG GAME HC/OC/QB the NFL has ever seen, and the proof is in not only the results, but also the numbers!

      Delete
    4. Jimmy can only win big games when he doesn't have to win it as a passer. And Kyle can only win big games when his defense does the heavy lifting. Back in the day, when McDaniel was staying up late at night, devising cutting edge rushing schemes for Kyle, he could beat the lesser teams in the playoffs, by running the football down their throats.

Those day are OVER! So get used to being average football team guys, because your HC/OC is an emotional WRECK!

  16. Kyle Shanahan is finally being exposed for who he is …. just a guy with a famous last name, who has made a career out of taking credit for a nerdy genius named Mike McDaniel, who spent 7 days a week burning the midnight oil in order to keep the guy with the famous last name ahead of the competition!

Now that McDaniel is no longer the wizard behind Kyle’s curtain, Kyle’s offense looks like a remedial high school level scheme. The creativity is gone. All of the creative offensive pre-snap motion that everyone around the league used to marvel at is down by at least 15% without McDaniel. Team’s have figured out how to cover Deebo coming out of the backfield, and while Deebo is still Deebo, it’s not enough to carry an offense, or save Kyle’s a_s like he did in the second half of last season.

Kyle Shanahan’s offense has been carried by his defense every year he’s been HC. It was Mike McDaniel’s creative zone rushing attack that at least kept Kyle’s offense viable over the years, to help support his more dynamic defenses.

I will give Kyle credit for 3 important things during his tenure:

    1) Kyle did a great job over the years of fooling people into thinking he was the outside-zone run-game genius behind his creative and dynamic rushing attack, and not the true genius – MIKE MCDANIEL

    2) Kyle has done a great job of finding brilliant Defensive Coordinators (Saleh, Ryans) to cover up for his deficiencies as an Offensive Coordinator and utter INCOMPETENCE as a Head Coach!

    3) Bringing in John Lynch who, unlike Kyle, doesn’t treat the fans like a bunch of morons, but more importantly, Lynch has brough his clear vision and expertise to the 49ers consistently outstanding defense. So, CUDOS TO JOHN LYNCH!

    5. I can't think of a more fitting start to the season, with Jimmy Garoppolo back in the saddle at QB. Every single piece of evidence and reasoning in the case against Jimmy Garoppolo, is coming into focus already, and we are only in week 7.

For instance, Jimmy woeful downfield passing: Through Jimmy Garoppolo's 4.75 games game this season, he ranks 30TH in QBR on passes that travel 15+ yards down field. Jimmy's completion % on those same downfield throws, is 31%, which ranks 31ST, and his actual YPA on those downfield throws, is 7.8 yards, which ranks 32ND in the NFL.

But for a lot of Niners fans, they will point to the fact that the 49ers are a run-first, smash mouth offense, right? That's who Kyle Shanahan is as an OC. In an era where every rule has been changed to favor downfield passing, Kyle has somehow convinced himself that was good for his father in the 1990's must still be the answer 25 years later!

So those Kyle Shanahan apologists (Razoreater, eMJay, ribico, etc) will say "so what if Jimmy is extremely limited in downfield passing, when that's not really what Kyle wants to attack opposing defenses anyways?"

Well, that's the thing about American Football. Everything works in concert. Every action has it's opposite reaction, and every action has a counteraction. It's like the worlds greatest, most violent chess match! And when one offensive action is broken, like Jimmy's downfield passing (caused by his happy-feet, and generally poor mechanics, where his upper body and lower body aren't tied together and working in sync) there's ALWAYS some form of a negative consequence, which usually carries over to other aspects of the offense. In this case, because opposing defenses simply don't respect Jimmy's ability to beat them with downfield passing concepts, like all of the league best QB's need to be able to do in 2022, JEFF WILSON JR (and/or Elijah Mitchell, Tevin Coleman, TDP, Deebo Samuel, etc) are CONSISTANTLY facing 8 OR MORE defenders in the box, almost regardless of down and distance. In fact, all of the top RB's in the league, with the exception of the Browns - Nick Chubb, and the Titan's - King Henry, are facing less men in the box to run against, than the 49ers Jeff Wilson Jr (and the lot). And the results are as predictable as the sun rising in the morning!

So for all of us NINER FANS who are looking at the 49ers defensive numbers, and wondering how in the world a team who's defense ranks top 3 in every conceivable meaningful defensive metric, is nothing more than a .500 football team, despite a relatively soft early schedule (49ers opponents are a combined 4 game under .500) ....

All I can tell you is that 99% of the blame rests at the feet of 2 people - HC KYLE SHANAHAN, who is the architect of what has become an increasingly underachieving offense despite elite skill-position playmakers almost everywhere you look, and of course QB JIMMY GAROPPOLO, who simply refuses to fix the same mechanical flaws that continue to hold him back as a downfield passer. And it's incredibly frustrating because you can see the talent in Jimmy's throwing motion and buttery-quick release, because he has the arm talent to make the short throws across the middle, and the screen passes near the LOS. And Jimmy's mechanical flaws are unquestionably fixable! But it's also very obvious that when a QB has made no attempt to correct the things that will make him a better QB, and he's in his 8th NFL season, that HE SIMPLY DOESN'T CARE enough to fix his mechanics, slow down his TAP-DANCING, get his LOWER BODY & UPPER BODY TO WORK IN CONCEERT, to learn how to properly STEP INTO HIS THROWS, and STOP CONSISTANTLY THROWONG OFF OF THE WRONG FOOT! Instead, Jimmy Garoppolo seems perfectly content with the way he plays the position, regardless of the results!

    1. A Brilliant Trade Deadline Idea:

The 49ers trade Jimmy Garoppolo, and a conditional 4th RND pick, to the NE Patriots for Mac Jones!

Kyle Shanahan get's a QB who he actually knows how to use (a Kirk Cousins clone) and John Lynch gets the QB he really wanted to draft in 2021. Jimmy Garoppolo is adored in NE, and he gives Belichick a true backup QB, and someone to help mentor Baily Zappe.

When Trey Lance gets healthy, JL can hopefully trade Trey Lance and salvage something in return for Trey, because let's face it, Trey Lance deserves a fresh start. He needs a head coach who builds him up, and takes advantage of his strengths, and unique skill-set, rather than a HC who tears him down, and treats him like a glorified fullback.

The trade deadline is 4:00 PM EST, 11/1/2022.

  23. Shanny and his 49ers are leading the NFC West. They went to the NFC Championship Game last January. Their QB1 got hurt. They're third in point differential. In the league.

    1. The problem with your argument, Razor, is that Kyle's in charge of the offense. If he was simply the Head Coach you'd have a much stronger argument. But he's the OC, and his offense has been holding the 49ers back for years, and it looks even worse without Mike McDaniel! Just because the rest of the NFC West is down, isn't an excuse, and in fact, it makes it even worse, because Kyle's wasting yet another golden opportunity, thanks to his high school JV offense.

  24. There's always room for constructive criticisms, but the crowd that's going around saying fuck Shanny, and calling for him to be sacked are batshit crazy!

    2. George:

I've been away recently and haven't followed what's been said here. About our final drive, we need two TDs in five/six minutes, I've forgotten which, but we go slow huddle. Plus he called a qb sneak that took 20-30 seconds off the clock. I think it's a matter of him not thinking well under pressure.

    3. Wasn't listening, but saw the youtube title..."You fire Shanahan, ok now what".

That is what got the JH niners in deep crap and got the Mooch niners in deep crap. You don't fire you HC unless you have someone much better ready to replace him.

Niners aren't firing a guy who went to 2 NFC champs and SB after a 3-3 start. Even if the team misses the playoffs this year (they won't) you still don't get rid of him just 1 year removed from the NFC Championship. He'd get at least next year.

Can't wait for Kyle to be back in the playoffs this year and all these dipsh!ts to go quiet again for a month (even tho they promised a full year).

    4. George, I'm most definitely not in the "fire Shanahan" camp, but I did feel there were some decisions made in this past game that I didn't agree with. Running so much time off the clock and not hurrying things up a bit in the fourth quarter was one of them. Very strange.

    5. George:
I’m not in that camp either but it’s not unreasonable to think he could be replaced by a combination of someone like Ryan’s as head coach and an established offensive coordinator or up and coming guy. If Lynch left they’d bump up Peters and I’m concerned we’ll lose Peters if Lynch doesn’t go anyway.

    1. I can't see how, with a healthier niners team, and with LA worse off than they were when they played earlier this year (they lost another olineman) that the niners don't get another win in Levis pt 2.

  27. The players made mistakes and the coaches made mistakes, couple that with injuries and you have the Atlanta game. The run game is what makes the Niners go but the run blocking and the talent at the RB position isn't there.

The Oline, has surprised me, the pass protection is better than I thought it would be and run blocking isn't what it needs to be. Banks is essentially a rookie playing LG and Burford is a rookie playing RG. Brendal is the weak link and needs to be upgraded and that doesn't stem just from the Atlanta game. Williams is getting old and McGlinchey is average at best. Seems like the majority of NFL teams are having problems with their Oline. Burford has made some good plays and has made some really bad plays...talented rookies do that.

I think the real problem is the talent at the RB position, Wilson is okay, and Mitchel is good but what they lack is speed going outside. Mozart type of speed. Someone who can take it to the house on any given play. Deebo is not the answer in the backfield. As of now when he is in the backfield, everyone knows he will get the ball...to include the defense...hint, hint. TDP has been hurt and Mason isn't used for some unknown reason.

The run game is suffering from an average Oline and a talent deprived RB room. Now I didn't expect the Oline to play as well as they have so being average is a plus but still it's not getting the job done on a regular basis. No don't trade for McCaffery nor Ackers.

  28. The coach does not expect the following players to practice on Wednesday:

    DL Arik Armstead (foot, ankle)
    DE Samson Ebukam (Achilles)
    S Talanoa Hufanga (concussion)
    OT Mike McGlinchey (calf)
    CB Charvarius Ward (groin)

Note - Bosa, Williams are practicing but limited and Verrett is close to returning.

  29. 49ers get key players back at practice before game vs Chiefs.
All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams, star edge rusher Nick Bosa and safety Jimmie Ward all returned to practice on Wednesday and could play Sunday against the Chiefs.
Cornerback Jason Verrett could also return this week as he tries to come back from a knee injury that has sidelined him since last season.

    1. Kills me that its been a decade (plus a year) since that magical 2011 season. 2012 was really good, but hurt when Alex wasn't allowed to see it all the way thru. 2011 was more special to me, it came out of nowhere, the doubts/etc thrown at the team, to go along with the success of the guys like Alex, Frank, Vernon, Pat, and Joe who'd been there for so many years struggling thru Nolan and Singletary, ups and downs, so close to breaking thru a few times.

Oh and the Tony Montana special teams crew...
