Preseason Game 2 Review: 49ers @ Vikings

By Scooter_McG

The 49ers had a good opportunity to test themselves against another competitive roster this week as their preseason took them to joint practices with the Vikings. The week culminated in a week 2 preseason matchup between the two teams, with the 49ers coming away with their second win of preseason.

I think it is fair to say the 49ers got a lot more out of the two days of joint practices than they did from the preseason game. At least I certainly hope they did. Both teams sat out 27 players - combined the two teams had more than one full 53 man roster sitting the game out. Among those inactives were almost all of the offensive and defensive starters for both teams.

The most interesting part of this game was probably the guys the 49ers had active, and then of those active who saw the field early and who late. Only three 49ers presumptive starters suited up in Javon Kinlaw, Aaron Banks and Spencer Burford.

Kinlaw saw action on the 49ers first three defensive drives with his last play of the day being an impressive 3rd down sack where he beat the OG with a nice swipe move and then used his strength to push past the lineman and chase down the QB. Aside from that play Kinlaw had only one other snap where he was 1-on-1 and also won that one handily, and spent the rest of his snaps being double teamed and holding his ground. All in all a nice display from the 2020 14th overall pick.

Banks and Burford meanwhile played the entire first half. Neither player stood out in either a good or bad way, which usually means they were just fine. But the team also struggled to create big running lanes and they had a number of issues with quick pressure up the middle, though this was usually a result of Keaton Sutherland getting blown past.

Aside from the three presumptive starters that played, here is what stood out to me:

  • Sudfeld really looked very comfortable and showed good decision making, pocket awareness and movement. He looks much better than previous backups like Beathard and Mullens. Holding onto him to be the backup QB is looking like a smart move.
  • Purdy had a couple of plays he'd like back, but he was also impressive for the most part. As much as Sudfeld has shown he should be the backup I doubt the team will want to lose Purdy either.
  • Add in the confidence Lance has exuded throughout camp... Brian Griese and Klay Kubiak, take a bow.
  • Aside from Banks and Burford, the other starting OL was not good. The good news is, none of those players are likely to make the roster.
  • Sermon, TDP and Hasty all saw action throughout the first few series. Sermon once again struggled to get much going in the running game, but again it didn't look like a Sermon issue but an OL issue. Hasty had a little bit more success and seems better than Sermon at making something happen if nothing is there. TDP had a rough start to the game and looked indecisive at times, but later took the bulk of the carries at the end of the first half and to start the third quarter and had some decent runs.
  • Jennings seemed to get more action early in this one than in the first preseason game but the drop issues he's had in practices also showed up in this game. Jennings night didn't last long though as he didn't see much action after the first few series. McCloud also seemed to have a pretty light load in this game. With Deebo and Aiyuk held out, those four look to have wrapped up the top WR spots. Danny Gray also started but played into the second half - he should be a lock to make the roster but looks set to begin the year as WR5.
  • The 49ers backup DL (plus Kinlaw) had the Vikings QBs under a lot of pressure throughout the first half. Interestingly, the starting DEs were Omenihu and Willis, with Drake Jackson rotating in, while Turay didn't see the field until the 4th defensive series when Alex Barrett also started seeing some action. That doesn't usually bode well for making the team, though it is also possible that the team is thinking forward about roster cuts and potential opportunities to trade a player like Willis or Omenihu. Either way, both Willis and Omenihu helped themselves in this one generating a number of pressures, while Jackson also had some nice plays including the pressure that led to Odum's INT.
  • Tarvarius Moore looked good at safety, but aside from that the secondary was at best ok through the first half. Defensive pressure up front hid some issues at the back end. Lenoir, Castro Fields and Odum in particular I thought had some trouble getting lost in coverage during the first half.

  1. I'd say Sudfeld is the best practice squad, and now backup quarterback that the 49ers have had in the Shanahan era. I like Purdy's calm demeanor on the field, but I think they can get him on their practice squad. I think convincing Griese to be the new qb coach was a stroke of genius.

    1. I was thinking awhile back that Griese might be the best newcomer to the Niners organization to include players. No interceptions by either QB.

    2. This is the best the 49ers QBs have looked through preseason under Shanahan I can recall. Obviously need to now carry that into the regular season, but so far so good for the new QB coaches.

    3. Agreed. I think both QB's bring a little something something to the 49ers QB group, and my gut tells me Brian Griese is the right guy.

That said, I do have to admit that I am a little bit biased. I was never a fan of Rich Scangarello. In fact, I thought he was kind of a joke. And just look at the results. Jimmy Garoppolo certainly isn't a scrub, but he never really improved during his tenure, and frankly, neither did Mullens or Beathard! In fact, I was openly HOSTILE in my opinion of Rich Scangarello if I'm being honest! Does that make me a bad fan? To be honest, I don't subscribe to that POV!

    4. My QB grades for preseason week 2 VS the Vikings:

      GRADE: A-

      I loved it!

Sudfeld really surprised me, in a good way, and I am convinced that Brock Purdy has the "it factor" that you look for in a backup QB, who can step in and inspire the team to win a game or two in the clutch! That's what you hope to find in a backup when you have genuine Super Bowl aspirations!

And just a reminder, not to toot my own horn but I'm the guy who was boasting about KENNY PICKETT, and his potentially outstanding fit for the Kyle's offense, on this blog a couple of years ago, before anyone else even knew his name!

  5. I'm going out on a limb: The 49ers were one of the most talented teams in the league last year, and they had an absolutely tremendous offseason in terms on injecting talent onto their already incredibly talented roster! Good for them. If they can get this OL straightened out, I don't see any other team standing in their way this year!

I'm doubling up on the Niners @ +$1,600

  7. I think the 49ers can feel pretty darn safe about exposing Sudfeld to waivers, with $2M fully guaranteed. And frankly, if that explains why they were compelled to give Sudfeld so much money in fully guaranteed money (most analysts and pundits were shocked about the large guarantee), well then all I can say is that was a stroke of absolute brilliance!

The way I see it, the 49ers can carry 3 QB's now without the risk of losing one of them, even though in reality they only need to protect 2 of them, IMO.

So I'll say it again - the 49ers better not expose Brock Purdy to waivers. He's shown too much promise, and I think he has more upside than Sudfeld, and has a skill-set that is a better suited to become the clear #2 behind Trey, now that Trey feels comfortably in command of this offense.

    1. I'm not sure what you mean re Sudfeld. Giving him guaranteed money won't prevent another team picking him up on waivers if the 49ers don't keep him on the 53.

It will be a risk either way. And if Lance needs to miss any time I feel more confident in Sudfeld than Purdy.

      Delete
    2. I'd wager Shanny has more confidence in Sudfeld too.

    3. Scooter_McG, don't you remember when everyone was scratching their heads earlier in the offseason, wondering why in the world the 49ers gave Sudfeld $2M in guaranteed salary, when his value was pegged closer to the league minimum? Don't you guys remember the reaction to Purdy's contract around the league? "

David Lombardi: "What Nate Sudfeld's $2 million guaranteed means for Trey Lance and the 49ers' QB room"

Well, the 49ers tried to pass it off as if Nate Sudfeld was in high demand, but nobody was buying that, so it was a head scratcher. Sudfeld's value was actually closer to league minimum, after all. he was a 6th round pick who has never even started a game in 6 years! He made $252,000 in 2021, lol.

Anyways, the point is - nobody, and I mean NOBODY is going to claim Nate Sudfeld @ $2M in GAURANTEED MONEY, so it's genius! If a team wants to clam Nate Sudfeld off waivers, the team has to pay Nate at least $2M in guaranteed salary, otherwise he clears waivers, and reverts back to the 49ers PS. $2M is not something you guarantee a QB who has never, ever started an NFL game in his life, and may not even make the final roster, UNLESS you want to be able to do what John and Kyle like to do with 1 or 2 guys every season, yo-yoing between the PS and the 53. That way, they can both protect Purdy on the 53, and slip Sudfeld through waivers.

      It's genius!

      Delete
    4. Correction: Don't you guys remember the reaction when SUDFELDS contract details were announced? Just a reminder ... it was kind of weird.

      Delete
    5. That's the way waivers work. teams can claim players off waivers, but they have to take his contract along with him.

Waiver VS Release: "When a player is waived, their contract is not yet terminated. In actuality they go on the 'waiver wire,' making them available to be 'claimed' by other teams. If another team does in fact claim the player then he joins said team with the conditions of his current contract".

      Delete
    6. Just a little knowledge for you guys.

      Delete
    7. Sure, it doesn't necessarily guarantee nobody will claim Sudfeld. But is it likely that another team would claim Nate Sudfeld and pay him $2M fully guaranteed ... in September?

      Highly unlikely, right?

And if they do, well, I have heard the 49ers really like Purdy, and let's face it, Sudfeld has more limitations. This gives the 49ers a very good likelihood of being able to keep all 3 QB, while only protecting Lance and Purdy. Now, they may decide to protect all 3, but I think I see what's happening here.

      Delete
    8. Just a reminder - I am the guy who told you that Jimmy G and his camp planned this opportunity for a straight release months ago, and you doubted me. Are you really going to continue to doubt me?

      Delete
    9. By the way guys, once a player clears waivers and joins a practice squad ......

      16 player squads -

Practice squads were limited to 10 players 2019, but that all changed when the uncertainty of COVID-19 hit, and the league increased practice squads to 16 players last season.

*Practice squad players moving up to the main roster: Teams now have much more flexibility with using practice squad players on game day. PS players can be activated on game day before the team announces their inactives (90 minutes before game time). The player doesn’t have to be elevated from the PS to the main roster for the move. This can happen with up to two practice squad players per week. A player is only able to be elevated twice per season. To be activated a third time requires the player to be signed to the regular roster.

This is a big change from past rules, and makes it easier for teams to have players they know and trust on game day, and also not have to subject them to waivers when they are signed to the main roster and cut to get back to the practice squad.

      Delete
    10. *Also, more practice squad protection -

The NFL also added a new wrinkle to the practice squad that provides teams with some limited protections for keeping practice squad players. Teams can designate four players every week that are protected from being signed by other teams. This protection starts on Tuesday each week, so every practice squad player is still available to be signed to the regular roster of another team after their team’s game that week until the deadline on Tuesday.

      Veteran players -

Another change last year is the eligibility requirements for veteran players. Previously teams could have up to 4 players who had two years of NFL experience. Now teams can have 6 veterans with NO LIMIT on the amount of accrued seasons they have in the league.

      Delete
    11. I am aware of all that.

The problem is, if they waive Sudfeld, even if a team isn't willing to take on his salary and he clears waivers and they are then able to re-sign him to their PS, they can only activate him on game day twice before they need to sign him back to the active roster. Otherwise Purdy needs to be the backup on game days.

More importantly, once he clears waivers and signs back to the 49ers PS, any team can then look to poach him from the 49ers PS to sign him to their 53. And that team won't be on the hook for his $2M guaranteed salary - once he clears waivers that contract is all due by the 49ers. While it would likely partially be offset by another team signing him (unless the language of the contract does not allow for offsets), the other team is still only responsible for whatever they sign him for (likely vet minimum) with the 49ers responsible for the rest.

      Delete
    12. Yes, other teams can try to poach him from the PS, but then the 49ers can always match, or exceed whatever he's been offered, and promote him at that point. I do understand that at some point they will need to add him to the 53, but I am more concerned about their initial roster cuts, because at some point they will suffer injuries, right, at which point roster spots will open up.

I I were J, I would feel pretty comfortable waiving Sudfeld on August 30th. I don't see another team out there wanting to add him to there 53 man roster on August 30th at $2M guaranteed. Sure, he's looked decent in the preseason, but in my opinion, Sudfeld's biggest value for the 49ers was his outstanding knowledge through camp. I figured at some point early on, Brock Purdy would pass Sudfeld on the depth chart, and I wouldn't be surprised if he has already.

So that would make the $2M look even more expensive, if Sudfeld starts the season as the #3 QB, right? Is there really a team out there who would choose to add Sudfeld, as opposed to all of the other young, cheap QB options out there when teams need to trim their rosters, when Sudfeld now also has to come in and learn a new playbook?

I would be shocked if there were. So go ahead and make Purdy the #2, and put Sudfeld on waivers, bringing him back on the PS early on, so that you can use that roster spot on someone else you don't want to lose, until somebody gets injured, and then you can promote Sudfeld if you need to.

      Delete
    13. BTW, can we all agree that Brock Purdy is going to pass Sudfeld on the depth chart this season?

I don't think that's even in question. In terms of talent, what does Nate Sudfeld do as well as Brock Purdy, other than maybe arm strength (and a lack of arm strength can be made up for with outstanding anticipation and awareness)?

      Delete
    14. Um, no. If he doesn't win the backup job heading into the season then he won't supplant Sudfeld during the season. Not enough reps. He'll be the scout team QB all year.

And Sudfeld deserves the backup QB role with how he has played.

      Delete
  8. From cubus:

Actually, I like what I'm seeing from Purdy. He is more mobile than Sudfield and from that perspective a better fit as the backup. He probably needs another year, but I sure hope we don't lose him.

    1. I like what I have seen too. But I've also liked what I have seen from Sudfeld, who is further along than Purdy in terms of knowing where to go with the ball. His decision making has really impressed me so far. I'd rather have Sudfeld go into a game at this stage.

    2. So Mr. Irrelevant has a decent game against back-ups and third stringers and fans are in a tizzy that another team will sign the rookie (who has never played for them) to their 53 as their third QB??!! Every team has carried 3-4 QBs in their 90, and they are likely to choose their own third-string QB if they choose to carry 3. This is a league where Colt McCoy made vet minimum last season, IIRC, relishing his opportunity to beat Kyle and the Niners :)

      Delete
    3. Yea, I think you can get Purdy to the practice squad.

    4. "So Mr. Irrelevant has a decent game against back-ups and third stringers and fans are in a tizzy that another team will sign the rookie (who has never played for them) to their 53 as their third QB??!"

And what has Nate Sudfeld done in 5 FULL SEASONS'S? He's never even earned a start, and certainly has never won a game, in FIVE years.

The 49ers drafted Brock Purdy, not Nate Sudfeld.

Sudfeld is a bridge backup QB, and nothing more. I am not saying Brock Purdy is the next coming of Joe Montana, but I am saying he has way more potential than Nate Sudfeld. The only thing Sudfeld has done of any significant in his 5 season is what the east coast media dubbed a "Nate Crime"! He's famous for being so bad, his HC used him to throw a football game, for crying out loud!

      Delete
    5. Besides, it's not one preseason game. Brock Purdy has consistently looked like a more talented QB than Nate Sudfeld, all training camp long, against one of the top defenses in the league, according to what I've seen and been told.

Brock Purdy has 46 college starts under his belt, and completing nearly 67% of his pass attempts, while rushing for over 1,100 yards (with 19 rushing TD's, and a 3.2 ypc avg) Nate Sudfeld started 26 games in college, and barely completed 60% of his passes, while rushing for 132 yards (with 8 rushing TD's and a 1.0 ypc avg)

      Delete
    6. And again, I'm not saying they should simply let Sudfeld leave. They should keep all 3 QB's IMO, and they can do that while also holding onto an extra player (Mason, or an extra OL, etc.) without exposing him to waivers. I am assuming that was part of the plan when they shockingly gave Sudfeld $2M in fully guaranteed money. Who does that for a backup QB who hasn't started a single NFL game in his entire 5 year career?

      That's all I am saying.

      Delete
    7. Here we go. You are starting to get all ranty and preachy already.

All reports I have heard outline Purdy has looked ok in camp, but not amazing, and not better than Sudfeld. What we have seen in 2 preseason games supports what the reports have said. Sudfeld is the better QB right now.

      Delete
    8. If they need to shave off a positition, I'd go with TE. Kittle and Woerner. Release the rest and between Dwelley, Hudson, and Kroft, you should get one back. I'd do the same thing with WR. Go with 5 and between the rest that's left, pick one up later.

      Delete
    9. I don't know that DFF is that valuable either with the way they produce LB's. That's another position where you could keep 4, release DFF and the rest. Pick up one of the leftovers.

      Delete
    10. I said Purdy has "consistently looked like a more talented QB than Sudfeld", I didn't say he's been been better.

This is Sudfeld's 6th year in the NFL, and 2nd year in Kyle's system, so he damn well better be playing more consistent brand of football right now.

But let's not mistake that for long term potential, or even midseason potential.

I don't know if brock Purdy can be that guy, but I am pretty sure that Nate Sudfeld isn't that guy! He would have gotten an opportunity to start an NFL game by now, if he could potentially be that guy, don't you think? Instead, Sudfeld has mostly been a 3rd string QB through 5 seasons, did you know that? And you guys think that a QB who has never earned an opportunity to start a single regular season game over 5 seasons, even as a backup QB, and in fact has often been listed as a 3rd string QB, is a guy you'd rather protect on a roster, than a guy who was actually drafted by the organization, and has already shown more potential in his first 3 months, than the other guy has in 5 full seasons?

      It's common sense Scooter_McG.

This is the same kind of common sense as Jimmy Garoppolo not wanting to negotiate against himself, and not jumping to take a big pay cut in order to rush himself onto another desperate roster, just to get traded. The guy has made almost $120M in his career so far, and he's only 30 years old. He's probably not anywhere close to being 100% healthy right now, and probably won't be for the rest of the season. He could easily be one tough tackle away from suffering a huge setback.

WHY IN THE WORLD then, would Jimmy Garoppolo rush himself back, taking a significant pay cut along the way, and likely ending up in a short-term mess, rather than taking a release, so that he can take the time he needs to get healthy, and the time to find the right opportunity for him, with long term potential?

This was always a no-brainer, Scooter_McG, but if you are closed minded to anything that might construed as not being beneficial to the san Francisco 49ers, you might not see it, right? You might be in denial, right?

Look, I don't know for sure if the 49ers plan on shuffling Nate Sudfeld in-between the PS and the 53 man roster like they've been doing with other guys over the last couple years, I could be wrong about that. But what I do know is that it's a viable, and logical option at this point. And it's a much better option than simply waiving Brock Purdy, and risking losing a QB coming off of a superior college career, who you JUST DRAFTED, and who has really shown something despite being a rookie in a system that takes a full year to master, simply to hold onto a guy like Sudfeld, who based on his 5 year NFL career, is almost certainly not a long term option as a backup QB, based on everything he's done, or should I say hasn't done.

      Delete
    11. So I've been trying ti not bring this up out of respect, but now I feel like I have to:

So what happened Scooter, Razor, eMJay, and all of the rest of you who completely ignored the most basic, common sense, and instead insisted that Jimmy Garoppolo would be traded? That Jimmy would rush himself back from what could potentially end up up being a long term injury if he's not careful, simply in order to get traded to a desperate team?

Tell me again why Jimmy would go behind the 49ers back to get surgery, if he was really interested in working with the team in order to secure a trade to a desperate team, rather than doing the sensible thing and taking his time to get healthy, and find the right opportunity for his next chapter?

    12. When you are in this mood it is honestly infuriating talking to you. You talk down to everyone and have blinkers to anything other than your own belief. To then accuse anyone else of being close minded is hilarious.

The Eagles thought highly enough of Sudfeld to give him a 2nd round RFA tender. And the 49ers thought highly enough of him to give him $2M guaranteed. So NFL teams think he can be a backup QB in this league.

What Sudfeld has lacked is opportunities.

Purdy was Mr Irrelevant for a reason. He's looked alright, but Mood is correct, the chances of another team poaching him aren't that high. Most teams keep two QBs and they already know who they will be. Teams that keep 3 QBs are likely doing so because they already have their own young guy they want to keep.

If the team keeps Purdy over Sudfeld it will most likely be because Purdy has won the backup QB job, not to protect him from waivers.

      Delete
    13. See, I didn't say that, Scooter. This is why I get so frustrated. What I said originally was that it might have been a brilliant strategy. I was actually complimenting the 49ers if that was their strategy. IMO, nobody is claiming Sudfeld if they are on the hook for $2M fully guaranteed. Why is that such a hard concept?

Like I said Scooter_McG - don't you remember the uproar and how surprised the beat writers and pundits were when it was announced that Sudfeld was given $2M fully guaranteed? Everybody was looking at each other like ... WTF just happened? That's not a normal contract for a backup QB, ESPECIALLY for Paraag Marathe. The reason it's not normal is that there is no need to give him so much guaranteed money that it would be very painful to cut him.

What happens if you draft a better QB?

Sudfeld hasn't done enough over the course of 5 seasons, to earn that much in guaranteed salary, has he? He was the 49ers 3rd string QB last season, just like he has been everywhere else, so:

      - Why give him so much in guaranteed money? That's the question.

All I said what that this could end up being a brilliant strategy, and it actually helps explain why the 49ers gave Sudfeld such a shockingly high amount of guaranteed money? Obviously they gave Sudfeld all of the guaranteed money before they even drafted Brock Purdy, so this was never about Brock Purdy per say, it was more about whichever QB they decided to draft. They had determined that they wanted to draft a potential backup, but Kyle knows that Sudfeld is good for Trey Lance, so how can make the best of it, and keep Sudfeld and Purdy (or whichever QB you draft, without wasting a roster spot? Well, if you do what I'm suggesting, you can probably have Sudfeld on your roster, you can draft a QB to be the long term backup solution, and then you can protect your draft pick, while also lowering the risk of Sudfeld being claimed off of waivers. And if Sudfeld get's claimed, you are off the hook for the $2M in guaranteed salary.

All of this is true, and all of it makes logical sense. I can't say for certain that that's what they will do, but it doesn't change the fact that it's a viable, and brilliant strategy!

      Delete
    14. Scooter, so what if Purdy was Mr. Irrelevant, the Redskins took a flier on Nate Sudfeld with their 6th round pick, as they were already set at Q, with Kirk Cousins and the veteran Colt McCoy. Sudfeld was 3rd string QB, and was never even active as a rookie, not even for a single game.

In fact, he has only attempted something like 30 regular season, passes since he was drafted in 2016, with 2 turnovers.

There is shortage of NFL starting QB's, if Sudfeld was any good, he'd have been given an opportunity by now.

Like I said, I don't know how good Brock Purdy can be, how can we know, he's a rookie? But at least Purdy is mobile, he's poised, and he has already shown the ability to command Kyle's offense.

And I wouldn't be worried to losing Sudfeld even if by chance there is a team willing to give him $2M fully guaranteed, because I think there will be better options available on August 30th.

    15. Maybe David Lombardi can shed some light on this stuff for you guys if you are interested:

"NATE SUDFELD or BROCK PURDY QB2? The 49ers' QB shuffling also ft. Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo"

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2_ag6o05mA

Lombardi believes they want to keep all 3 QB's, but he also recognizes how the 49ers usually carry their 3rd QB on the PS, which would mean Purdy would have to clear waivers.

Lombardi also asks Kyle if Brock Purdy was the most polished rookie QB he's ever worked. (spoiler alert - the answer is YES). He talks about Purdy's extensive experience in college, and he talks about how Brock Purdy has been in full command of the offense during this camp, "a very impressive feat for a rookie!"

    16. Scooter_McG, you don't think the Seattle Seahawks would snatch up Purdy before the ink dried on his waiver sheet? Come on.

In fact, here are all the teams who could use Purdy as an upgrade at 3rd string (at least), right now. And that's just off the top of my head:

      Seahawks: J. Eason
      Raiders: C. Garber
      Chiefs: S. Buechelle
      Jaguars: E. Perry
      Dolphins: S. Thompson
      Eagles: R. Sinnett
      Panthers: PJ Walker
      Falcons: F. Franks
Vikings: K. Mond or N. Mullens - take your pick

    17. BROCK PURDY: The four-year starter from Iowa state arrives in Santa Clara with bonafide college accolades. Over his prolific, four-season college career, Brock Purdy threw for over 12,000 yards and 81 touchdowns, while he added an additional 1,177 rushing yards and 19 scores on the ground. He is also considered a locker room leader.

"… we’re excited. He started a ton of games at Iowa State, really helped influence a culture change there and played a lot of good football for them" - John Lynch

Purdy’s does have some elite qualities. His 10-yard-split was among the very best in the NFL, which means he's much, much quicker than than the average pro cornerback, and he made very good use of this talent in college, consistently avoiding free rushers and finding a way to slip out of seemingly impossible situations. As a rhythm passer, he showed amazing touch and anticipation on short-to intermediate routes, something Jimmy Garoppolo made a living on during his tenure under Kyle, and as Shanahan strongly implied, the Niners drafted Purdy for his ability to execute between the tackles, where he demonstrates both solid mechanics, and tremendous accuracy, often targeting a cadre of tight ends and H-backs. Brock Purdy is efficient from the pocket, but he’s truly quite dangerous on the run.

Brock Purdy may never develop into a franchise QB, but given his character and leadership qualities, as well as his history of making highlight-caliber plays, Purdy has the ability to grow into the type of backup quarterback NFL teams hate to face!

  9. "Cornerback Emmanuel Moseley (hamstring), defensive lineman Arik Armstead (knee), tight end Charlie Woerner (core muscle surgery), offensive lineman Jaylon Moore (lower leg), linebacker Curtis Robinson (groin) and defensive back Dontae Johnson (ribs) will all be in practice to start the week.

There’s also a possibility CB Ambry Thomas is back after missing Saturday’s preseason game with a knee injury.

Shanahan said CB Charvarius Ward (hamstring) won’t return for the final preseason matchup, but should be back the following week.

RT Mike McGlinchey (knee), free safety Jimmie Ward (hamstring) and running back Elijah Mitchell (hamstring) will all continue sitting out."

    1. Nice pickup...but last year around this time we signed Ha-ha-Clinton-Dix, just to release him before the 53 cuts.

So not really sure Gipson will stick with the team, unless injury to Ward is more serious than initially thought.

    2. We know it was at least a grade 2 strain and that's a minimum of 4 weeks. I think Gipson sticks around.

  11. QUESTION:
Will Mason replace Sermon on the 9ers RB roster?

    ReplyDelete

    1. This will be interesting to see how Kyle and John handle this decision. Are they at the point now where they feel comfortable enough to essentially admit in their mistakes, cutting highly drafted players (who have been outplayed) in favor of guys who were drafted either much later, or in some cases not drafted at all?

Trey Sermon was a highly coveted by the 49ers scouting and personnel, right? He was high on their list of RB's, because of his perceived system fit alongside Trey Lance. He was one of the most productive RB's in the country when running out of shotgun or pistol formations, and he was incredibly productive in two different football programs as well. In fact, he was absolutely sensational at times in both the 2018/19 season, and 2020/21. He was so good in the second half of 2020/21, that he practically carried the Buckeyes all the way to the national championship game.

But Sermon has either lost a step, or he's just completely lost his confidence, or both. He's extremely hesitant, he can't catch the football, and even when he runs decisively he doesn't have any acceleration, or explosive getty-up in his step. He was extremely effective with his lateral movement in college, because of his unique ability to cover a lot of lateral ground with one step. Now he just looks sluggish, indecisive, and he doesn't seem to have any feel for where the holes are opening up.

Luckily the 49ers don't seem to need Sermon now, because they've done such a good job in uncovering and recognizing and pursuing other talent, whether it's late round guys, or even undrafted guys. That said, the 49ers will deserve a lot of criticism if they cut Mason and/or Hasty in order to keep Sermon. What they should be doing is working the phones and trying to trade Sermon in order to salvage something, anything, for the former 3rd round pick.

    1. Concerning! Hope they are just keeping him wrapped up before the season. If he suits up for 3rd pre-season game, he should be good.

  13. Jason Poe splitting first team reps with Aaron Banks!!

At some point this season, this would be the ideal O-Line

    LT - Trent Williams
    LG - Jason Poe
    C-Nick Zakelj
    RG-Spencer Burford
    RT-Mike McGlinchey

    1. I'm thinking Burford could be the RT next year.

    2. That would actually be awesome....Financial Implications notwithstanding!

I Like McGlinch's leadership, but unfortunately he is not trending in the right direction health-wise. I hope he has a long career somewhere else.

I'm really excited about Jason Poe...at a minimum I think he makes the 53 roster and should have him locked up for the next 3 years.

    3. That would be something if two rookies won the starting OG spots.

I didn't think Banks was too bad against the Vikings on first viewing, but I've seen some film breakdowns of the game that show he had his struggles at times.

  15. So Scooter_McG wonders why I get frustrated. Well, the ultimate 49ers insider - Matt Maiocco is now reporting (as of yesterday), that "the 49ers believe Jimmy Garoppolo will end up with the Seahawks" after his release.

Funny thing about that is that I told you guys that John Lynch would NEVER trade Jimmy to Seattle, and somehow I managed to get push back from some of you even on something as obvious as that! And now yesterday, Matt Maiocco was on KNBR and had this to say (keep in mind, Maiocco is the ultimate 49ers insider in 2022): "I would suspect that he's released on August 30th, and that it doesn't go to September 10th. They could hold onto him for that long, but I don't think they would do that because that would mean that, in essence, they would have to cut one more player than they want to cut. And so with the roster that they have, I just don't see them doing that. So my guess is that he's released on August 30th, and probably the next day, he's signing with some team, and I know around the 49ers, that they think he's going to be ending up in Seattle."

I concur. And like I wrote above, I wouldn't be at all surprised if Brock Purdy ended up in Seattle either, if the 49ers leave him unprotected. Wouldn't that be something!

  16. And by the way, I gave you guys August 30th as my HARD DEADLINE for Jimmy's release.

  17. If Poe does win the LG job, and based on recent reports it sounds like that isn't that far fetched, that would have to make the 49ers C-LG-LT combo the most athletic in NFL history, surely.

    1. I don't think Poe is anywhere near winning the LG spot. Maybe RG but Banks has LG on lock.

    2. Agreed, Scooter. If we're talking their best 5 on the field it would be, Williams/Banks/Brendel/Poe/Burford. According to reports, Poe split 1st team reps with Banks at LG.

  18. A very talented team. If the Niners don't beat themselves and the injury bug stays put the Niners should go a long way.

I want Lance to be good enough to forget the sting of the draft capital that was used.

The front line isn't established yet, the front line has been porous over the last few years. Pass protection has been spotty, it's why the quick release is so important. All of the recent QB's have had to deal with it I expect Lance to be able to deal with it. Don't want to hear any excuses about pass protection...it hasn't been good in the past, and I suspect that it's not going to be good this year.

    3. Pass protection is a bit of a concern, but I think they will get it shored up, and I do think they can, I think they have something truly special going on for them!

  19. I think it's time to post my feelings about this team going into the season, because like I said, I think this team has something truly special brewing, and that special thing that is brewing is what I would call a championship formula.

So here it is guys, my outlook for the 2022/23 49ERS, and their formula for winning SUPER BOWL LVII! I think this team has something truly special brewing, and that 'special thing" is what I would call a championship formula. Here's the reason the 49ers should not only be considered Super Bowl LVII front runners, but also frontrunners to go on a "championship run" - meaning multiple World Championships over the next 4 or 5 years:

    - TALENT! The 49ers have the most talented roster, top to bottom, in the NFL. Their defense was top 3 last season, and still they've drastically improved the backend. DeMeco Ryans is no longer a rookie DC, and he probably could have landed a HC position because he's that good, but he chose to return to the 49ers. That tells me that he believes the Niners have as good of a chance as anybody to win the SB this year.

    - DEFENSE! The old adage - "defense win championships" remains true, especially when paired with Kyle Shanahan and an offensive roster loaded with elite talent!

    - COACHING! While I have questioned some of Kyle's roster, and personnel decisions over the years, the one thing I've never questioned is his coaching ability. The guy is an offensive genius, and the 49ers are clearly well coached, in all 3 phases!

    - A FRANCHISE QB! It seems pretty clear that they made the right choice. They did what they had to do in order to the right young QB in place. The lead up to the draft was unsettling for me, to say the least, and I'm pretty sure I lost a couple years off of my life span, but they picked the right guy, and now they have the right young QB on a rookie pay scale, which almost every NFL "expert" believes is probably the single biggest roster building advantage a team can have in regards to the current salary cap landscape. Of course, that advantage would have been offset if had drafted an average talent, or of Lance didn't have such a strong foundation, and nearly unlimited potential, but Trey Lance has a lot more going for him than a "strong foundation" - he has an elite combination of physical tools, and the mind of a champion!

    - KYLE SHANAHAN! IT all goes back to Kyle. I have a new found respect for Kyle, after the way his team turned last season around, and so I feel like - while the Niners almost certainly have one of the best defenses in the NFL, they also have the consensus best NFL play-caller / play-designer at HC to go along with it. And Kyle is in charge of an offensive roster that is overflowing with talent, a lot of which is elite talent, especially at the most important positions. (I'm not going to make a big deal about what seems like an improved Special Teams unit, because as they showed last season, their ST was already good enough to win a championship).

In conclusion, it seems almost unfair, just how many pieces of the championship puzzle that are currently in place for the 49ers, and they are about to uncover an additional $25M in cap space on top of all of that! I don't know just how quickly this team can put it all together, but I do know that if this team can simply remain relatively healthy (knock-on-wood), it's just a matter of time their they reach their championship reality reaches it's potential! So if you guys haven't placed your bets on the 2022 49ers yet, it's time to get on it!
